Amused

Chapter 2: The Stranger Behind the Door

“Your husband doesn’t know I found this… but you need to see what’s inside.””

I stood frozen.

My hand remained pressed against the bathroom door, my phone still glowing in my other hand.

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.

A stranger.

Outside.

At a wedding where I had just been locked away like a problem someone needed to hide.

“Who are you?”” I called.

My voice came out weaker than I wanted.

There was a pause.

Then the man answered.

“My name is Daniel.””

I frowned.

“I don’t know any Daniel.””

“I know.””

The certainty in his voice made my skin crawl.

Another contraction began building.

Slowly at first.

Then sharper.

I gripped the edge of the counter and closed my eyes.

“Please,” I whispered.

“If you’re actually trying to help me, get this door open.””

“I can.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

“I can open the door.””

I looked at the lock.

It was an expensive electronic system, built into the frame. Something meant to impress guests.

Something meant to keep unwanted people away.

“Then do it.””

“I need you to listen first.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Listen?””

“Yes.””

“My water broke. I’m thirty-four weeks pregnant. I have been locked in a bathroom by my mother-in-law, and my husband just told me not to ruin his sister’s wedding.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke quietly.

“I know.””

The way he said it made my stomach tighten.

Not because of the contraction.

Because he knew too much.

“How do you know that?””

“I was looking for your husband.””

My breathing slowed.

“What?””

“My name is Daniel Cross. I work with Sterling Ridge Estate’s security system.””

I stared at the door.

The estate.

The cameras.

The locked rooms.

The endless staff members who seemed to disappear whenever the Sterling family wanted privacy.

“I don’t understand.””

“You will.””

The pain returned.

I leaned against the wall.

“Daniel, whatever this is, it can wait. I need medical help.””

“It can’t wait.””

His voice changed.

Not louder.

Just more serious.

“Because what I found explains why your mother-in-law locked you in there.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you talking about?””

I heard him shift outside.

“I found a file.””

“What file?””

“A medical file.””

My heart skipped.

“What?””

“It has your name on it.””

The bathroom suddenly felt smaller.

The walls seemed closer.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

“Daniel, nobody has access to my medical records.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you telling me this?””

“Because someone at this wedding does.””

I stopped breathing.

The orchestra outside changed songs.

Through the thick walls, I could barely hear the celebration continuing.

People laughing.

Glasses clinking.

A family taking photographs.

A family pretending everything was perfect.

“Who?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That silence scared me more than the words.

“Daniel?””

“I need you to promise me something.””

“What?””

“When I open this door, don’t go back into the ballroom.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if I’m right, the person who did this is still inside.””

A wave of fear passed through me.

I looked down at my stomach.

My baby moved.

A small reminder that I didn’t have the luxury of being afraid.

“Open the door.””

A few seconds passed.

Then I heard a small click.

The lock released.

I pulled the handle immediately.

The door opened.

A man stood in the hallway.

He looked nothing like the wealthy guests filling the wedding reception.

He wore a dark security uniform, his sleeves rolled up, his expression tense. He looked like someone who had spent years watching people lie and had learned not to believe appearances.

He immediately stepped aside.

“Are you okay?””

I almost laughed.

“No.””

His face tightened.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t apologize. Help me.””

He nodded.

“Can you walk?””

“I don’t know.””

“Okay. Don’t move too fast.””

He reached for his radio.

“No.””

He stopped.

“What?””

“Not through the estate.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“You need an ambulance.””

“I know.””

“Then why—”

“Because I don’t know who I can trust here.””

The words sounded insane.

But after what had just happened, they were the only words that made sense.

Daniel studied my face.

Then he slowly lowered the radio.

“Okay.””

He believed me.

That surprised me.

“I need to show you something first.””

“I don’t care about a file.””

“You will.””

He reached into a folder he carried under his arm.

Inside was a printed document.

My name was written across the top.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

Daniel watched my reaction.

“You recognize it?””

“It’s from my doctor.””

I grabbed the paper.

My eyes scanned the page.

Pregnancy history.

Expected complications.

Emergency contact information.

My fingers froze.

The emergency contact section.

My husband’s name was missing.

Instead, there was another name.

Eleanor Sterling.

I stared.

“What is this?””

Daniel swallowed.

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””

“She can’t be my emergency contact.””

“She is listed as one.””

“I never signed this.””

“I know.””

My eyes moved over the page.

There was a signature at the bottom.

My signature.

Except it wasn’t mine.

Someone had copied it.

Someone had forged my name.

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Because someone wanted control over what happened tonight.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“No.””

“I didn’t say anything yet.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“My mother-in-law didn’t lock me away because of the wedding.””

Daniel said nothing.

And that silence was an answer.

“She knew this would happen.””

“We don’t know that.””

“She knew.””

My voice cracked.

“She knew I was going into labor.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Hayes—”

“Anna.””

He nodded.

“Anna.””

I looked back at the file.

The room spun.

For weeks, Eleanor had been asking questions.

How often did I see my doctor?

Was the baby healthy?

Did my doctor think I would deliver early?

At the time, I thought she was being a concerned grandmother.

I thought maybe she was finally trying.

Now every conversation felt different.

Every smile felt fake.

“Why would she do this?””

Daniel hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled out another piece of paper.

This one was smaller.

A copy of a message.

My eyes moved across the words.

Eleanor Sterling.

To Julian.

Sent three days before the wedding.

*She cannot give birth tonight. Make sure she stays quiet until after the ceremony.*

My hands went numb.

“No.””

Daniel watched me carefully.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

The hallway blurred.

My husband.

My husband knew.

He knew.

Maybe not everything.

Maybe not the details.

But he knew enough.

The words on his text message came back.

Please don’t make this worse.

Worse.

That was the word he chose.

Not dangerous.

Not emergency.

Not baby.

Worse.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

A thousand memories rushed through my head.

Julian refusing to let me tell his parents about our financial struggles.

Julian asking me to wear a different dress because Eleanor thought mine looked “too simple.””

Julian telling me to understand his family because “that’s just how they are.””

How long had I been explaining away things I shouldn’t have?

“Anna.””

Daniel’s voice brought me back.

I looked at him.

“We need to leave.””

I nodded.

Then I heard it.

Footsteps.

Coming closer.

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

He looked down the hallway.

Someone was approaching.

Slow.

Confident.

Not rushing.

Someone who belonged there.

The footsteps stopped.

A familiar voice filled the corridor.

“Anna?””

My blood turned cold.

Julian.

Daniel looked at me.

“You know him?””

I stared toward the corner.

“Yes.””

“Is he safe?””

I wanted to answer immediately.

I wanted to say yes.

He was my husband.

The man I loved.

The father of my child.

But the words wouldn’t come.

Because for the first time in three years, I wasn’t sure.

Julian stepped into view.

His face changed when he saw Daniel standing beside me.

“What is he doing here?””

Daniel didn’t move.

“What are you doing here, Julian?””

My husband ignored him.

His eyes locked onto mine.

“Anna, we need to talk.””

I held up the forged document.

His expression shifted.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

And guilt.

“Where did you get that?”” he asked.

Not:

“Are you okay?””

Not:

“Is the baby okay?””

Not:

“Why were you locked inside?””

Just:

“Where did you get that?””

I felt something inside me break.

“Julian…”

My voice was barely a whisper.

“How long were you planning to keep me locked away?””

His face went pale.

And before he could answer, another voice came from behind him.

A voice that made Daniel immediately step forward.

Eleanor.

“Because she was never supposed to see that file.””

The hallway went silent.

Eleanor stood at the end of the corridor.

And in her hand was a phone.

My phone.

The one I thought I had lost inside the bathroom.

She smiled sadly.

Like I was the one who had betrayed her.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Anna, there is something you need to know about the baby.””
