Amused

Chapter 7: The Mother I Never Knew

“I’m your mother.””

The words should have felt impossible.

They should have sounded like a cruel joke.

A stranger walks into a wedding, interrupts a family disaster, and claims to be the woman who gave birth to me.

But the terrifying part was not that I didn’t believe her.

The terrifying part was that some small piece of me did.

Because when she looked at me, I felt something I couldn’t explain.

Recognition.

Not from memory.

From instinct.

The woman standing in front of me had the same habit I did.

She pressed her thumb against her palm when she was nervous.

A tiny movement.

Something I had done my entire life without knowing why.

And she was doing it too.

“Anna.””

Julian’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

He looked just as shocked as I felt.

“Did you know?””

He shook his head immediately.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

But this time, I believed him.

Because for once, Julian looked genuinely lost.

The woman stepped forward.

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

She looked at me carefully.

“I never wanted to leave you.””

My chest tightened.

I had spent my whole life believing a different story.

A story I had never questioned because everyone around me repeated it.

My mother abandoned me.

My father couldn’t handle raising a child alone.

I was told Claire Bennett disappeared and never looked back.

I had built an entire identity around being unwanted.

And now this woman was standing in front of me saying it was all a lie.

“You’re not my mother.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Claire’s face fell.

“I understand why you think that.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t.””

She nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I don’t know what it feels like to grow up believing your own mother chose to leave you.””

The hallway became quiet.

Even Eleanor looked uncomfortable.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive a stranger just because she looked sad.

“You disappeared.””

Claire nodded.

“I did.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward Eleanor.

Then toward Julian.

Then back to me.

“Because the Sterling family made sure I had no other choice.””

The air changed.

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

“That is a lie.””

Claire looked at her.

“No, Eleanor.””

Her voice was calm.

“That’s the one thing I’ve spent twenty-five years proving.””

Twenty-five years.

The number hit me.

I was twenty-five years old.

A lifetime.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

The edges were damaged from being carried too many times.

“I was twenty-two when I had you.””

I listened.

“I was young. I had no money. No family support.””

Her fingers tightened around the envelope.

“But I loved you more than anything.””

My throat tightened.

“Then why did you leave?””

She looked down.

“Because Julian’s grandfather found out I was pregnant.””

Everyone froze.

Julian’s face changed.

“My grandfather?””

Claire nodded.

“He offered me money to disappear.””

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Claire ignored her.

“When I refused, he threatened to take you away from me.””

My stomach turned.

“He couldn’t do that.””

“He could.””

Claire looked at me.

“The Sterling family had lawyers, connections, resources.””

She gave a small, painful smile.

“I had a baby and a minimum-wage job.””

Nobody spoke.

“I tried to fight.””

Her voice became softer.

“But then one day, I received documents saying Julian’s grandfather would pursue custody and claim I was unstable.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Were you?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I was scared.””

That word again.

Everyone had been scared.

But somehow, their fear always became my suffering.

“What happened after that?””

Claire looked at Eleanor.

“Your mother-in-law knows.””

All eyes turned.

Eleanor remained still.

“You knew?””

I asked.

Her silence answered.

“Eleanor?””

She finally spoke.

“You were a child.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You don’t understand what happened back then.””

“No.””

My voice grew louder.

“I understand perfectly.””

I pointed at Claire.

“You knew my mother was alive.””

Eleanor looked away.

“You knew where she was.””

“Yes.””

The confession landed like a punch.

Julian looked at his mother.

“What?””

Eleanor sighed.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone always says that.””

Julian looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I knew Claire existed.””

“You told me she abandoned Anna.””

Eleanor’s face changed.

“I told you what you needed to know.””

Julian stepped back.

“What?””

His voice was quiet.

“You lied to me too?””

For the first time that night, Eleanor looked less like a powerful woman.

She looked cornered.

“This family survived because people made difficult choices.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You survived because you made choices for everyone else.””

Claire looked at me.

“That’s why I came tonight.””

I turned.

“Why?””

She held out the envelope.

“Because I found the truth.””

I took it slowly.

Inside was a document.

Not medical.

Not financial.

Something else.

A birth record.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

The father’s name.

I looked up.

“Julian?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

I turned the paper toward him.

His face changed.

Because he knew the name.

Everyone knew the name.

The name written there was:

*Alexander Sterling.*

Julian’s father.

My husband’s father.

Dead for eight years.

My hands began shaking.

“No.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know until recently.””

I looked at her.

“What are you saying?””

She swallowed.

“Before I met your father…”

She paused.

“I was with Alexander Sterling.””

The hallway went silent.

Julian stared at the paper.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire shook her head.

“It’s not.””

My mind struggled to process the words.

Alexander Sterling was my biological father.

Which meant—

I looked at Julian.

My husband.

My child’s father.

The man I had married.

The man whose family had been controlling my life.

My entire body went cold.

“Julian…”

He looked horrified.

“No.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

He took the document.

“I need to verify this.””

Claire nodded.

“Please.””

Daniel examined it.

Then looked at me.

“Anna…”

His voice changed.

“What?””

He looked at Julian.

Then at me.

“This explains everything.””

Eleanor’s face turned pale.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“The Sterling family trust.””

My heart sank.

“What about it?””

He looked at me.

“The reason the baby changes the inheritance isn’t because he’s the first male heir.””

Julian frowned.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at the birth record.

“Because Anna isn’t just Julian’s wife.””

Nobody moved.

“She’s a Sterling.””

The words echoed.

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“She is the missing child from Alexander Sterling’s first relationship.””

Julian stared at me.

“I…”

He couldn’t finish.

I looked at Eleanor.

At the woman who had spent years making me feel like I didn’t belong.

The woman who knew exactly who I was.

The woman who watched me marry into a family that already knew my bloodline.

“Why?””

My voice cracked.

“Why did you let me marry Julian?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Because we didn’t know if the baby would be a boy.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“We thought if you had a daughter, everything would remain under control.””

My stomach turned.

“But if the baby was a boy…”

Daniel finished the sentence.

“The Sterling bloodline would return to Anna’s branch of the family.””

The wedding noise outside suddenly sounded distant.

The applause.

The music.

The celebration.

All of it felt like a performance happening in another world.

My entire pregnancy.

My marriage.

My life.

It had all been part of a family war I never knew existed.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

I answered slowly.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

An unfamiliar voice.

Cold.

Controlled.

“Anna Bennett Sterling?””

I froze.

“Yes.””

“This is Detective Mason with the estate investigation team.””

My heart raced.

“Why are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because we found the person who altered your medical records.””

I looked around.

At Julian.

At Eleanor.

At everyone.

“Who?””

The detective’s voice lowered.

“And Anna…”

“Yes?””

“The person who changed those records was not trying to hurt your baby.””

I held my breath.

“They were trying to make sure your baby survived.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

A pause.

Then the detective said:

“Because someone else inside the Sterling family ordered a procedure that would have ended the pregnancy tonight.””

I looked at Julian.

At Eleanor.

At Claire.

“Who ordered it?””

The detective hesitated.

Then answered:

“The order came from someone who was at the wedding.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Who?””

The answer came.

May you like

And when I heard the name, my entire world collapsed.

“Seraphina Sterling.””
