Amused

Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew My Secret

“They exposed why you were chosen to have this baby in the first place.””

Julian’s words followed me like a shadow.

Chosen.

That was the word I couldn’t escape.

Not loved.

Not wanted.

Chosen.

Daniel helped me stand as another contraction faded.

“We need to get her to a hospital,” he said.

Nobody argued.

Not even Eleanor.

The woman who had locked me away.

The woman who had treated my labor like an inconvenience.

She simply stood there, staring at the phone in her hand, watching her family’s perfect image collapse.

Outside the ballroom, chaos had replaced the wedding.

The orchestra had stopped playing.

Guests whispered in small groups.

Servers carried half-empty trays through a crowd that no longer cared about champagne or photographs.

The Sterling family’s beautiful night was falling apart.

And somehow, I was still the center of it.

“Anna.””

Julian stepped closer.

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face was pale.

“I need to tell you something before you hear it from someone else.””

I almost smiled.

“Is that what you’ve been doing all night?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“Trying to make sure I hear your version first?””

“No.””

“Because everyone keeps saying they need to explain.””

My voice became quieter.

“But nobody ever tells me the truth until I force it out.””

Julian looked down.

And for once, he didn’t defend himself.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology hurt.

Because it was the first real one.

And it came too late.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Whatever happened, it can wait until she’s safe.””

Julian looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“I understand exactly.””

The two men stared at each other.

Then a woman’s voice interrupted.

“Anna?””

I turned.

A woman stood near the entrance of the hallway.

She was older, maybe in her sixties, wearing a simple navy dress instead of the expensive gowns surrounding her.

I didn’t recognize her.

But she recognized me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Oh my God.””

She covered her mouth.

“You’re really here.””

I frowned.

“Do I know you?””

The woman looked at Eleanor.

And Eleanor’s entire body stiffened.

That reaction scared me more than anything.

Because Eleanor Sterling was not a woman who got surprised.

Not easily.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

The woman stepped closer.

“My name is Margaret Vale.””

She looked at me.

“I was your husband’s mother’s doctor.””

Eleanor’s face turned cold.

“Margaret.””

The woman ignored her.

“I was the one who reviewed the original genetic report.””

My stomach tightened.

“Original?””

Daniel immediately looked at her.

“What do you mean original?””

Margaret reached into her purse.

“I mean the report Julian and Eleanor showed you was not the first report.””

The hallway went silent.

Julian looked shocked.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret looked at him.

“You don’t know?””

That question landed like a weapon.

Julian stepped back.

“No.””

Margaret looked between us.

“Then your mother lied to both of you.””

Eleanor’s voice became sharp.

“That’s enough.””

“No.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

She wasn’t afraid anymore.

“I stayed quiet for years because I believed I was protecting people.””

She looked at me.

“But I was wrong.””

My heart raced.

“What was changed?””

Margaret took out a folder.

A real folder.

Not a copied page.

Not a photograph.

A complete file.

“The original genetic analysis.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Can I see that?””

Margaret handed it to him.

He opened it carefully.

I watched his eyes move across the pages.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What does it say?””

He looked at Julian.

Then at Eleanor.

“It says the risk was much lower than what was presented.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

Margaret nodded.

“The report stated there was a possibility of inheritance. Not a certainty.””

She looked at me.

“Your baby was never confirmed to have the condition.””

I felt dizzy.

The hallway tilted.

“They lied.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Eleanor looked away.

Julian looked destroyed.

I turned toward him.

“You knew there was only a possibility?””

His voice was barely audible.

“I knew there was a risk.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer crushed me.

“You knew.””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You keep saying that.””

My voice broke.

“But every time you say it, I hear something else.””

“What?””

“That you thought I couldn’t make my own choices.””

Julian looked like he wanted to cry.

“I was scared.””

“So was I.””

I touched my stomach.

“I was scared every day.””

I remembered every appointment.

Every night I woke up worried.

Every time I wondered if I was doing enough.

“And I still showed up.””

The words came out slowly.

“I still loved him.””

Julian looked at my stomach.

“I love him too.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He froze.

“You loved the idea of him.””

The words hurt both of us.

“But when loving him became difficult, when he became inconvenient, you chose your family.””

Julian had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Daniel closed the file.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What more?”” I asked.

He turned one page.

“This report wasn’t altered just to convince you to end the pregnancy.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“It was altered to change something else.””

“What?””

He handed me the page.

At the bottom was a section I hadn’t seen before.

A section about inheritance.

A section about family assets.

I read the words slowly.

Then I looked up.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel pointed.

“The Sterling family trust.””

I stared.

“My baby?””

He nodded.

“The child who inherits the Sterling bloodline has legal rights to certain family assets.””

My face went numb.

“No.””

Margaret spoke quietly.

“Anna, there is something else you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“Your pregnancy changed everything.””

“How?””

“Because before you became pregnant, Julian was the only possible heir.””

I felt sick.

“And after?””

Margaret looked at Eleanor.

“After the baby was confirmed to be a boy, the trust changed.””

My heart pounded.

“Changed how?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your son would become the primary heir.””

Silence.

The kind of silence where everything suddenly makes sense.

The medical files.

The pressure.

The secrets.

The fear.

Eleanor wasn’t just worried about a sick child.

She was worried about losing control.

I looked at her.

“Is that why?””

Her face remained still.

But her eyes gave her away.

“You thought my baby was going to take something from Julian.””

“That is not what happened.””

“Then explain.””

She didn’t.

Because she couldn’t.

A staff member suddenly rushed into the hallway.

“Mrs. Sterling.””

Everyone turned.

His face was terrified.

“The reporters have found someone.””

Eleanor looked angry.

“Who?””

The staff member swallowed.

“The woman who leaked the documents.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Where is she?””

The staff member looked toward the entrance.

“She’s outside.””

“Who is she?”” Julian asked.

The staff member hesitated.

Then said:

“She says she’s Anna’s biological mother.””

My entire body went still.

The world narrowed.

My biological mother.

A woman I had spent my entire life believing was gone.

A woman I had never met.

A woman who supposedly abandoned me before I could remember her face.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Anna…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“She’s dead.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the front doors of Sterling Ridge Estate opened.

A woman stepped inside.

She looked older.

Tired.

But her eyes were familiar.

Too familiar.

She looked directly at me.

And tears filled her face.

“I’m sorry it took me this long.””

I couldn’t move.

“I didn’t know how to find you.””

My heart pounded.

The woman took one step forward.

“I’m your mother.””

The hallway disappeared.

Because the woman standing in front of me wasn’t just a stranger.

She was the missing piece of a story I never knew existed.

May you like

And in her hand was a document.

A document she said would prove why the Sterlings chose me long before I ever met Julian.
