Amused

Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the paper.

At my name.

At the signature beneath it.

At the date.

Three days before the wedding.

My hands went cold.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

Then louder.

“No.””

I looked at Julian.

He looked like someone who had just been caught standing beside a fire he started.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That silence destroyed whatever hope I had left.

“Julian.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me you didn’t sign this.””

He looked down.

And somehow, that hurt more than if he had admitted it.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Anna, we need to focus.””

I held up the paper.

“No.””

My eyes stayed on my husband.

“I need him to answer.””

Julian swallowed.

“I can explain.””

I laughed.

A small, broken sound.

“Everyone says that when they’ve already done something unforgivable.””

“That’s not fair.””

I looked at him.

“Fair?””

The hallway lights blurred.

“My mother-in-law locked me in a bathroom.””

“She shouldn’t have done that.””

“You knew she was planning something.””

“I didn’t know she would lock the door.””

“But you knew enough to let it happen.””

He looked away.

That was the moment something inside me finally broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like a piece of glass cracking where nobody could see.

“You signed a medical consent form for me.””

“I was trying to help.””

“Without asking me?””

“Because you would have panicked.””

I stared at him.

“You thought I couldn’t handle the truth about my own child?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“That’s exactly what you thought.””

Julian rubbed his forehead.

“Anna, please understand. When the specialist told us there was a risk—”

“Us?””

I cut him off.

“Who is us?””

His face changed.

I already knew.

“Your mother.””

He didn’t answer.

“Your mother was involved from the beginning.””

“Anna—”

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“I want to know everything.””

The wedding music continued somewhere behind the walls.

A slow romantic song.

A song about forever.

The irony almost made me sick.

Julian looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying a secret for too long.

“I found out after your second appointment.””

I frowned.

“My second appointment?””

“Yes.””

“The one where you told me you couldn’t come because of work?””

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

A painful memory surfaced.

That day, I had sat alone in the doctor’s office.

I remembered looking around at other couples.

The husbands holding hands.

The wives smiling.

I remembered telling myself Julian was busy.

I remembered defending him when the nurse asked if my husband was joining me.

“He has a lot going on,” I had said.

I had defended a man who was already making decisions behind my back.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Julian took a breath.

“The doctor noticed something in the screening results.””

“Something?””

“A possibility.””

I waited.

“The baby could have inherited a condition from my family.””

I looked at him.

“Your family?””

He nodded.

“Something genetic.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because we weren’t sure.””

“Who is we?””

Again.

Silence.

Again.

The answer.

Daniel spoke.

“Did you get a second opinion?””

Julian looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Without Anna?””

Julian didn’t respond.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You got medical opinions about her pregnancy without her consent?””

“It was complicated.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was calm.

“That was a choice.””

Julian looked angry.

“You don’t know anything about my family.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Actually, I know more than you think.””

Everyone turned.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Daniel reached into his folder.

“I found another document.””

Eleanor immediately moved.

“Enough.””

Daniel ignored her.

“It’s a report from Sterling Medical Research.””

My heart sank.

“Sterling Medical?””

Daniel nodded.

“The family owns part of a private research company.””

Julian’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the same place I found the altered medical records.””

Eleanor’s expression became dangerous.

“You broke into private files.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Someone inside your organization gave them to me.””

The hallway became silent.

“Who?”” Julian asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Eleanor’s confidence disappeared for half a second.

But it returned quickly.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I wish I was.””

He showed us a photograph.

A document.

The title was visible.

*Genetic Compatibility Review — Sterling Family Lineage.*

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s why this pregnancy became a problem.””

I looked at Julian.

“Problem?””

He looked devastated.

“Anna…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I want him to say it.””

Julian closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“My family has a history.””

“Of what?””

He hesitated.

“A rare genetic condition.””

I waited.

“And?””

His voice dropped.

“The condition can be passed through male descendants.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“So?””

Julian looked at my stomach.

“The baby is a boy.””

Everything stopped.

The words felt heavier than they should have.

My baby.

My son.

I touched my stomach.

The child I had already loved before I knew his face.

The child everyone else had turned into a calculation.

“So because he’s a boy…”

Julian looked away.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Eleanor spoke.

“We were trying to spare you.””

I turned toward her.

“Spare me?””

“Yes.””

“You mean you wanted me to get rid of him.””

Her face tightened.

“We wanted to avoid a lifetime of suffering.””

I looked around the hallway.

At the people who had decided my child’s future without me.

At the people who had looked at my baby and seen a risk instead of a person.

“You didn’t see him.””

Nobody spoke.

“You never saw him move.””

My voice cracked.

“You never heard his heartbeat.””

I looked at Julian.

“You did.””

His eyes filled.

“You held my hand.””

I swallowed.

“You smiled.””

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

“You told me he was the best thing that ever happened to us.””

Julian looked broken.

“I meant it.””

“Then how could you do this?””

He had no answer.

The silence stretched.

Then a sudden noise interrupted us.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked around.

It was Eleanor’s.

She answered immediately.

“Yes?””

Her expression changed as she listened.

“What?””

A pause.

“No.””

Another pause.

Her face went pale.

“What do you mean the documents were released?””

Daniel looked at me.

Released?

Eleanor turned away.

“Who has them?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Find them before the press does.””

My heart started racing.

“What documents?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked toward the ballroom.

Then at Julian.

“Your family has a bigger problem than a wedding scandal.””

Julian stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel’s expression was grim.

“The person who sent me those files didn’t just want Anna to know the truth.””

He looked at me.

“They wanted everyone to know.””

A loud crash came from the reception hall.

Then voices.

Many voices.

The wedding guests.

Something was happening.

Eleanor’s phone buzzed again.

She looked at the screen.

And all the color left her face.

“What is it?”” Julian asked.

She slowly turned the phone around.

A news alert filled the screen.

*STERLING FAMILY MEDICAL SECRETS LEAKED HOURS BEFORE HIGH-PROFILE WEDDING*

Below the headline was a photo.

A photo of me.

Pregnant.

Standing outside the Sterling family estate.

My private medical information was attached.

My name.

My pregnancy details.

Everything.

I covered my mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“This isn’t about hiding the baby anymore.””

I looked at him.

“What is it about?””

He stared at the screen.

Then said the one thing that made my blood run cold.

“Someone is trying to destroy the Sterling family.””

Another contraction hit.

I bent forward.

Daniel caught me before I fell.

And as I held onto him, I heard Julian whisper behind me:

“Anna…”

I looked back.

His face was filled with fear.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Fear.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

“Whoever leaked those files,” he said quietly.

“They didn’t just expose our family.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“They exposed why you were chosen to have this baby in the first place.””
