Chapter 8: The Sister Who Wanted My Baby Gone
“Seraphina Sterling.””
The name echoed through the hallway.
For a moment, nobody reacted.
Not because they didn’t hear it.
Because everyone did.
I looked toward the ballroom doors.
Behind them was the woman whose wedding had caused everything.
The woman who had danced beneath the chandelier while I was locked away.
The woman whose perfect night had mattered more than my emergency.
My sister-in-law.
Julian’s sister.
Seraphina.
“No,” Julian whispered.
The detective’s voice remained calm through the phone.
“We found evidence connecting her to the altered medical requests.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What evidence?””
A pause.
“Messages.””
My heart sank.
“Between who?””
“Seraphina and a private medical consultant.””
I looked at Eleanor.
Then Julian.
Neither of them looked surprised enough.
That was what scared me.
“Julian?””
He didn’t answer.
“Did you know?””
His face changed.
Not guilt this time.
Shock.
“No.””
I studied him.
“You didn’t know?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
For some reason, I believed him.
Maybe because this was the first time all night he looked like someone had ripped the ground from underneath him too.
The detective continued.
“Mrs. Sterling, you need to leave the estate immediately.””
“Why?””
“Because we don’t know what Seraphina’s intentions are.””
I looked toward the ballroom.
The music had started again.
A wedding continuing while the family’s darkest secrets were being dragged into the light.
“She’s here.””
“Yes.””
The detective’s voice lowered.
“And she knows the documents were leaked.””
The call ended.
I stood there, frozen.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Seraphina walked out.
She was still wearing her wedding gown.
The same dress that had filled every camera frame earlier.
The same dress everyone had admired.
But now I saw something different.
Not beauty.
Not elegance.
Control.
She looked around the hallway.
Her eyes landed on me.
Then on Claire.
Then Daniel.
Finally, Julian.
And she smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A warning.
“Well.””
Her voice carried through the corridor.
“I guess the family reunion is finally happening.””
Julian stepped forward.
“Seraphina.””
She tilted her head.
“What?””
His face was pale.
“Is it true?””
She looked amused.
“Is what true?””
“Did you contact a doctor about Anna?””
The smile disappeared.
Only slightly.
But enough.
I noticed.
Everyone noticed.
Seraphina sighed.
“Of course.””
She looked at me.
“Everyone always assumes the worst.””
I stared at her.
“You tried to end my pregnancy.””
Her expression hardened.
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“I tried to stop a disaster.””
I felt sick.
“A disaster?””
She walked closer.
“Do you know what happens when the wrong person inherits everything?””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
She laughed quietly.
“Of course you don’t.””
She looked at Eleanor.
“You never told her.””
Eleanor remained silent.
Seraphina looked back at me.
“The Sterling family has spent generations building something bigger than any one person.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You mean money.””
“I mean responsibility.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You mean control.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think this is about greed?””
“Isn’t it?””
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re carrying.””
I instinctively touched my stomach.
“My baby.””
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“The future of this family.””
The hallway went silent.
I stared at her.
“You don’t see him as a baby.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You see him as an inheritance.””
Seraphina’s jaw tightened.
“You are emotional.””
“Stop saying that.””
The words came out louder than I expected.
“Every time one of you wants to dismiss me, you say I’m emotional.””
I looked at all of them.
“But I am the only person here who has been honest.””
Nobody spoke.
“I’m the only one who loved this child before he became valuable.””
Julian looked away.
Because he knew it was true.
Seraphina crossed her arms.
“You think you’re better than us?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I think I’m different.””
“Different?””
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“I would never look at my own family and decide someone’s life was a problem to solve.””
For the first time, anger flashed across Seraphina’s face.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Then explain.””
She went quiet.
Again.
Everyone had explanations.
Nobody had answers.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Seraphina, the detective mentioned messages.””
Her eyes moved to him.
“Did he?””
“Yes.””
She smiled.
“So now you’re all trusting a stranger?””
Daniel’s expression didn’t change.
“Your messages were recovered.””
Something flickered across her face.
Fear.
Tiny.
But real.
“What messages?””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“The ones where you told the consultant the baby couldn’t be allowed to inherit.””
Julian turned toward his sister.
“What?””
Seraphina looked at him.
“Julian—”
“No.””
His voice broke.
“Is that true?””
She looked away.
And suddenly Julian understood.
“My God.””
His voice was barely audible.
“You knew.””
Seraphina’s expression softened.
“Julian, listen to me.””
“No.””
He stepped back.
“You knew about the inheritance.””
“I was protecting you.””
“Like Mom protected everyone?””
The words hit.
Eleanor looked away.
Seraphina’s face changed.
“You don’t understand.””
“I don’t understand?””
Julian laughed bitterly.
“My wife was locked in a bathroom because of this family.””
“Because she was a threat.””
The words left Seraphina’s mouth before she could stop them.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Everyone heard.
Especially me.
I stared at her.
“A threat?””
Seraphina realized what she had said.
But she didn’t take it back.
“You don’t know what your child represents.””
“My child?””
I stepped closer.
“He is a person.””
“He is an heir.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“He is my son.””
Seraphina looked at me.
And for a second, I saw something behind her anger.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Your son will destroy everything.””
I stared.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Because he proves the Sterling family was built on a lie.””
Nobody moved.
Julian looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Seraphina looked at him.
Then at Eleanor.
Then at Claire.
“The truth about Alexander Sterling.””
My heart stopped.
“What truth?””
She laughed softly.
“You all think Anna being his daughter is the biggest secret.””
She shook her head.
“It isn’t.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then what is?””
Seraphina looked at me.
“Your father didn’t leave you because he didn’t know you existed.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
“He knew.””
The hallway blurred.
Claire covered her mouth.
“No…”
Seraphina continued.
“He knew about Anna.””
I looked at Claire.
Then back at Seraphina.
“What are you saying?””
She stepped closer.
“Your father didn’t abandon you.””
My heart pounded.
“Then why?””
Seraphina’s eyes darkened.
“Because he was trying to protect you from this family.””
A strange silence followed.
Then she whispered:
“And because he knew what the Sterlings would do if they ever found out you were the rightful heir.””
I looked at Eleanor.
At Julian.
At everyone.
My entire life had been built on missing pieces.
And now they were all falling into place.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
His face was pale.
“The ambulance is here.””
Relief almost came.
Almost.
Until he continued.
“But they aren’t alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who is with them?””
Daniel looked toward the estate entrance.
“Police.””
A pause.
“And they’re not here for Seraphina.””
My blood went cold.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked directly at Julian.
“They’re here because someone reported that Anna Sterling attempted to falsify her own medical records.””
I stared.
“What?””
Julian’s face changed.
Because he understood before I did.
Someone had turned the entire story around.
Someone had made me the criminal.
May you like
Then Daniel whispered:
“They’re here to arrest you.””
