Chapter 9: The Night My Wife Tried to Disappear
I didn't tell Malik about the phone call.
He had already spent too many nights wondering whether someone was going to send him away.
He deserved one peaceful evening.
But I immediately called Daniel.
He answered while I was still standing in the kitchen.
"Marcus?""
"Anthony says Denise is planning to leave the state tomorrow.""
Daniel became silent.
"Did the investigator confirm that?""
"Officer Daniels just told me.""
"All right. Don't confront Denise. We need to understand whether this is a threat, an attempt to avoid questioning, or something else.""
"What if she takes Malik?""
"Is Malik with you?""
"Yes.""
"Keep him with you. Contact the authorities if she attempts to remove him without proper arrangements. Don't use force or create a confrontation.""
I nodded.
"Understood.""
"Marcus, there's something important. If Denise is planning to leave, we need to know whether she's taking documents or property connected to the investigation.""
I looked toward the staircase.
"I'll check the house.""
"Don't search her private belongings without proper authority. Preserve what you already have and let the investigators handle the rest.""
I exhaled.
"Okay.""
After ending the call, I walked upstairs.
Malik was lying on his bed, reading.
"Hey, buddy.""
He looked up.
"What's up?""
"Nothing. Just checking on you.""
He smiled.
"Can we play basketball tomorrow?""
"Absolutely.""
"Even if it's raining?""
I laughed.
"Then we'll find an indoor court.""
He closed his book.
"Dad?""
"Yeah?""
"Are things going to be normal again?""
I sat beside him.
"Things are going to get better.""
He studied my face.
"Promise?""
I took his hand.
"Promise.""
He nodded.
Then he returned to his book.
I stayed beside him until he fell asleep.
Only then did I go downstairs.
At 8:40 p.m., Denise entered the kitchen.
She wore jeans and a dark jacket.
A large handbag hung from her shoulder.
I looked up from my laptop.
"Going somewhere?""
She stopped.
"To see a friend.""
"At this hour?""
"Marcus, I don't need permission to leave my own house.""
I nodded.
"That's true.""
She stared at me.
Something about her expression seemed different.
She wasn't angry.
She was calculating.
"Are you going to keep punishing me forever?""
I closed my laptop.
"Nobody is punishing you.""
"You've brought investigators into my home. You've involved lawyers. You've let Vanessa sit here judging me.""
"I haven't asked anyone to judge you.""
"Then why are they all treating me like a criminal?""
I looked at her.
"Maybe you should ask them.""
Her jaw tightened.
She placed her handbag on the counter.
"Anthony called me.""
I waited.
"He told me you've been talking to him.""
"Yes.""
"He's lying to you.""
"About what?""
"Everything.""
I didn't answer.
She walked closer.
"Marcus, you know your brother-in-law. He's always had financial problems. He probably saw an opportunity and used my name.""
"He's your brother.""
"Exactly. And I know what he's capable of.""
I watched her carefully.
"Then why did he say you planned to leave tomorrow?""
Her expression froze.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
"He's making things up.""
"Are you leaving the state?""
"No.""
"Are you taking Kayla and Jordan?""
She shook her head.
"Why would I?""
I looked at the handbag.
"Where are you going tonight?""
She picked it up.
"To my sister's.""
I nodded.
"Okay.""
She stared at me.
"That's it?""
"What do you want me to say?""
"You're not even going to ask me to stay?""
I looked at her.
For three years, I had done everything I could to keep our marriage together.
I had ignored warning signs.
I had excused her behavior.
I had repeatedly convinced myself that she was simply struggling to adjust to being part of a blended family.
But now I understood that keeping the marriage together had become more important to me than noticing what was happening to my son.
And I would never make that mistake again.
"Denise, I'm not going to beg you to stay.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"So that's it?""
I stood.
"My priority is Malik.""
She laughed bitterly.
"Of course it is.""
Then she picked up her handbag and left.
I watched through the front window as she drove away.
Ten minutes later, my phone vibrated.
A message from Anthony.
Marcus, please don't let Denise take the blue folder.
I immediately called him.
He answered breathlessly.
"Listen, man. I need you to understand something.""
"What blue folder?""
"The one with the trust documents.""
"Where is it?""
"Denise has it.""
My stomach tightened.
"How do you know?""
"Because she told me.""
"What else did she tell you?""
He hesitated.
"She said she had copies of everything. The trust paperwork, the guardianship authorization, even some of your financial documents.""
I closed my eyes.
"Anthony, why are you telling me this now?""
"Because I don't want to be blamed for something I didn't do.""
I felt anger rising.
"Your name is on the proposed transfer.""
"I know.""
"Your account was supposed to receive the money.""
"I know!""
"Then why should I believe you?""
His voice cracked.
"Because Denise told me she had already arranged everything. She said you were going to sign the final paperwork once you understood that Malik needed to live somewhere else.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did you believe her?""
He was silent.
Then he said, "Yes.""
I felt sick.
Anthony continued.
"She told me Malik was emotionally unstable. She said you were struggling to control him. She said Vanessa would take him if the money was available to support his care.""
"Vanessa never agreed to that.""
"I know that now.""
"Did you ever speak to Malik about leaving?""
"No.""
"Did you ever threaten him?""
"No, Marcus.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then tell me where Denise is going.""
"I don't know exactly. But she mentioned a hotel near the airport.""
I looked at the clock.
9:12 p.m.
"Anthony, do you have anything that proves what you're saying?""
"I have messages.""
"Send them to the investigator.""
"I will.""
Then he said something else.
"Marcus?""
"What?""
"There's a second blue folder.""
I froze.
"Where?""
"In my house.""
I felt my heart pound.
"Why do you have it?""
"Denise gave it to me for safekeeping. She said it contained documents she didn't want you to find.""
I immediately called Officer Daniels.
At 10:05 p.m., two investigators arrived at Anthony's home.
They recovered the folder.
I wasn't present, but Daniel kept me updated.
The folder contained photocopies of trust documents, correspondence with the document preparation service, and several handwritten notes.
One note was particularly disturbing.
If Marcus refuses, use the school concerns to establish that he cannot manage Malik's needs.
Another read:
Vanessa placement — temporary.
And beneath it:
Transfer before review.
I stared at the photographs Daniel sent me.
The plan was becoming clearer.
Denise had intended to use the concerns about Malik's wellbeing to create an argument that I was an unavailable father.
Then she would present herself as the person capable of managing his care.
If she gained temporary authority, she could potentially attempt to gain access to his inheritance.
But there was something else.
A printed email from Anthony.
It was dated two months earlier.
*Anthony: What if Marcus finds out about the account?*
*Denise: He won't. He trusts me.*
*Anthony: And Malik?*
*Denise: He's a child. He won't understand what we're doing.*
I read the final sentence several times.
He's a child.
He won't understand.
But Malik had understood enough to keep a notebook.
Enough to remember every missed meal.
Enough to hide a handwritten list because he was afraid nobody would believe him.
I put my phone down.
Then I heard a noise upstairs.
A door opening.
I went to the hallway.
Malik stood at the top of the stairs.
"Dad?""
"Hey, buddy. Why are you awake?""
"I heard your phone.""
I walked upstairs.
"Everything okay?""
He nodded.
Then he asked:
"Is Denise coming back?""
I hesitated.
"I don't know.""
He looked down.
"Can I ask you something?""
"Anything.""
"If she comes back, will she make me leave?""
I knelt in front of him.
"No.""
"Even if she's angry?""
"Even then.""
He nodded.
Then he whispered, "I don't want Jordan to think I hate him.""
My heart tightened.
"You don't hate Jordan?""
"No. He's my brother.""
I smiled faintly.
"Then he knows that.""
Malik looked at me.
"Can I see him tomorrow?""
"Of course.""
He returned to his bedroom.
I waited until his door closed before going downstairs.
At 6:30 the following morning, Officer Daniels called.
"We located Denise.""
"Where?""
"At a hotel near the airport.""
I sat up.
"Was she leaving?""
"She had luggage with her. We also found several folders containing financial and legal documents.""
"Did she have the children?""
"No. Kayla and Jordan are staying with a relative.""
I exhaled.
"Are they safe?""
"Yes. We've made contact with the appropriate family members.""
I rubbed my face.
"What's happening now?""
"Denise has agreed to participate in an interview. Anthony has also provided additional messages.""
"Is she being arrested?""
"That decision depends on the evidence and the appropriate legal authorities. We don't want to make premature assumptions.""
I nodded.
"Understood.""
After the call, I went downstairs and made breakfast.
Pancakes.
Eggs.
Strawberries.
I set two plates on the table.
Malik came in wearing a blue sweatshirt.
He stopped when he saw the food.
"Morning, Dad.""
"Morning, buddy.""
He sat down.
I placed a glass of orange juice beside him.
He took a bite of pancake.
Then he looked at me.
"Is she gone?""
I nodded.
"For now, she's staying somewhere else.""
He thought about that.
Then he asked, "Does that mean I can eat whenever I'm hungry?""
I looked at him.
"Yes.""
He took another bite.
Then another.
I didn't say anything.
I simply sat beside him.
At 11:20 a.m., Daniel called.
"Marcus, we received the latest document examination results.""
I stood in the kitchen.
"What did they find?""
"The signature on the guardianship authorization is not yours.""
My heart began pounding.
"Are they certain?""
"The examiner has identified significant differences between the disputed signature and your verified signatures. The final report will include the technical findings.""
I exhaled.
"What about the notarization?""
"The notary has been interviewed. She says Denise presented the document as something you had already signed.""
"Did she see me sign it?""
"No.""
I closed my eyes.
"So Denise lied to the notary?""
"That's what the evidence currently indicates.""
I looked toward Malik.
He was sitting at the table drawing a basketball court.
Then Daniel said:
"Marcus, there's another development.""
"What?""
"The investigator obtained a message from Denise to Anthony dated yesterday morning.""
I gripped the counter.
"What did it say?""
Daniel paused.
Then he read it aloud.
If Marcus refuses to cooperate, I'll make sure Malik never gets to decide where he lives.
My blood ran cold.
"She sent that yesterday?""
"Yes.""
"After the school investigation?""
"Yes.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Daniel, what does this mean?""
"It means the investigators are taking the intimidation allegations very seriously.""
I looked at Malik.
He was humming quietly.
And for the first time, I understood that the biggest danger hadn't been the money.
It had been the possibility that Denise would keep using my son's fear to get what she wanted.
That afternoon, I received a call from Denise herself.
I almost didn't answer.
But I decided to let her speak.
"Marcus.""
Her voice sounded tired.
"What?""
"I want to come home.""
I closed my eyes.
"This isn't a decision you can make over the phone.""
"Please. We need to talk.""
"We've talked enough.""
She started crying.
"I made mistakes.""
I remained silent.
"I was under pressure. Anthony kept telling me we needed to secure our future.""
"Your future?""
"Our family's future.""
"Malik's money isn't your family's savings account.""
"I know.""
"Do you?""
She began sobbing.
"Marcus, I never wanted things to go this far.""
I stared at the kitchen counter.
"Then why did you try to send him away?""
"I was angry.""
"Why did you threaten him?""
"I didn't mean it.""
"Why did you leave him hungry?""
She didn't answer.
Then she whispered:
"I didn't think you'd find out.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Not an apology.
Not an explanation.
The truth.
I ended the call.
A few seconds later, a message arrived.
I need you to understand something. Anthony was the one who suggested the transfer. I only went along with it because he said you had already agreed.
I read it twice.
Then I forwarded it to Daniel.
But before I could put my phone away, another message arrived.
This one was from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph.
A photograph of Renee.
She was sitting in the hospital room during the final week of her life.
Beneath it was a message:
Your wife wasn't the first person who wanted access to Malik's inheritance.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Ask Vanessa what happened the week Renee died.
My heart began pounding.
Because I had always believed Renee's death was the one tragedy in our lives that nobody could have prevented.
But now someone was suggesting there was another secret.
And that secret had been hidden from me for four years.
I looked toward the living room.
Vanessa was sitting with Malik, helping him build a model basketball court.
I walked toward her slowly.
"Vanessa?""
She looked up.
"What's wrong?""
I showed her the photograph.
Her face changed immediately.
She stood.
"Where did you get that?""
"Someone just sent it to me.""
She looked at the message beneath the picture.
Then she closed her eyes.
I felt my stomach drop.
"Vanessa.""
She didn't answer.
"What's the connection between Renee's death and Malik's inheritance?""
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
"Marcus, there's something I never told you about the night your wife died.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She looked toward Malik to make sure he couldn't hear.
May you like
Then she said:
*"Renee didn't want Denise anywhere near your family. And she had a reason that was much worse than you think.""*
