Chapter 5: The Suitcase by the Front Door
I drove home with Vanessa beside me.
Daniel followed in his own car.
The entire way, I kept looking at Malik's messages.
Three more had arrived.
Dad, I don't want to leave.
I didn't do anything.
Please come home.
My hands shook on the steering wheel.
Vanessa reached over and touched my arm.
"He's going to be okay.""
I nodded, but I couldn't speak.
When we turned onto my street, I saw a black suitcase standing beside the front door.
Malik's suitcase.
The one Renee had bought him before his first trip to Disney World.
I parked in the driveway.
Before I could reach the front steps, the door opened.
Denise stood there.
She wore a fitted black dress and held her phone.
Behind her, Malik stood near the staircase.
His face was pale.
"Dad!""
I stepped inside.
"What is going on?""
Denise lifted her chin.
"Your son has been disrespectful, and I think he needs some time away.""
"Who packed that suitcase?""
"I did.""
"Why?""
"Because this household cannot function like this anymore.""
I looked at Malik.
"Come here, buddy.""
He hurried toward me.
Denise immediately raised her voice.
"Don't encourage him!""
I placed one hand on Malik's shoulder.
"Nobody is sending my son anywhere.""
She laughed.
"Actually, that's not entirely your decision.""
Vanessa stepped into the doorway.
"Denise, what are you talking about?""
Denise froze.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely surprised.
"Vanessa?""
"Yes. I'm here.""
Denise looked from Vanessa to me.
Then she smiled.
"Oh, wonderful. You can explain to Marcus that Malik needs some stability.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I never agreed to take him.""
Denise's smile vanished.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me.""
"But you signed the paperwork.""
"I signed a school emergency form. I never agreed to become Malik's guardian.""
Denise's face reddened.
"That's not what you told me.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Don't put words in my mouth.""
I looked at the suitcase.
"Denise, unpack it.""
She ignored me.
"Marcus, you need to understand that Malik has become a serious problem. He's disrespectful, he refuses to follow instructions, and now he's making accusations at school.""
"He's thirteen.""
"Exactly! Old enough to understand consequences.""
I stepped between her and Malik.
"What consequences justify packing his belongings and threatening to send him away?""
She pointed toward the staircase.
"He's been manipulating you for months.""
"Then why is he afraid to speak in front of you?""
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa moved closer to Malik.
"Sweetheart, nobody is taking you anywhere.""
Malik looked at her.
"Really?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Really.""
His shoulders relaxed slightly.
I turned back to Denise.
"Give me the original guardianship document.""
She crossed her arms.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Vanessa brought copies of the papers you asked her to witness.""
Denise's eyes moved toward the brown envelope in Vanessa's hand.
Then she laughed.
"You're seriously going to believe her over me?""
"This isn't about believing anyone. It's about the truth.""
She took a step toward me.
"You have no idea what I've had to deal with in this house.""
I stared at her.
"Then tell me.""
"Malik refuses to listen. He takes food without asking. He interrupts conversations.
He makes Jordan feel guilty. He constantly reminds everyone that his mother died.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"He's a child grieving his mother.""
"He's been using that tragedy for attention!""
I felt Malik's fingers tighten around my sleeve.
I turned toward him.
"Go upstairs, buddy. Stay in your room for now.""
He hesitated.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes. Vanessa will stay with you.""
He looked at his aunt.
She nodded.
Malik walked upstairs.
As soon as he disappeared, I faced Denise.
"Never speak about Renee like that again.""
Denise laughed bitterly.
"Why? Because she was perfect?""
"No. Because she was his mother.""
"And I'm supposed to spend my life living in her shadow?""
I stared at her.
"You didn't marry Renee. You married me. You knew I had a son. You knew he had lost his mother.""
"I didn't know you'd put him above everyone forever!""
"He isn't competing with anyone!""
My voice echoed through the living room.
Denise stepped backward.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
"Fine. Since you want to make this official, let's talk about what happens next.""
She handed it to me.
It was a printed email.
The sender's address was unfamiliar.
The subject line read:
Regarding the Johnson Family Trust.
I scanned the message.
It discussed Malik's trust, the possibility of appointing an alternate custodian, and the process for requesting a review of the current arrangements.
At the bottom was a name.
Denise's name.
"Who sent you this?""
She shrugged.
"Someone who understands how these things work.""
"Who?""
"That doesn't matter.""
"It matters to me.""
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Your son has money that should be managed responsibly. Someone needs to make sure he doesn't waste it.""
I stared at her.
"He's thirteen.""
"And you have no idea what the future holds.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Are you seriously trying to get access to Renee's trust?""
Denise turned toward her.
"Stay out of this.""
"That money belongs to Malik.""
"And I'm talking about his future!""
I looked at the email again.
Then something caught my attention.
The message had been forwarded.
The original sender was a financial consulting company.
But the forwarded timestamp was from an account I recognized.
Denise's personal email.
There was an attachment.
I opened it.
It was a spreadsheet.
Several columns contained estimates of Malik's trust balance, projected withdrawals, and possible administrative fees.
One line read:
Monthly household allocation — $1,500.
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Denise snatched the paper from my hand.
"Give me that.""
"What does household allocation mean?""
"It's a financial projection.""
"For Malik's money?""
"For the family!""
I felt my stomach turn.
"You planned to take money from his trust?""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"Then explain the spreadsheet.""
She grabbed her handbag.
"I am done with this conversation.""
Before she could leave, a knock sounded at the door.
Two people stood on the porch.
One was Officer Daniels.
The other was a woman carrying a folder.
"Mr. Johnson?"" Officer Daniels asked.
"Yes.""
"I'm here with Ms. Greene from the county child welfare team. We need to speak with the adults in the household and complete our assessment.""
Denise immediately changed her expression.
Her shoulders relaxed.
Her voice became sweet.
"Of course. I'm glad you're here. There's been a terrible misunderstanding.""
Ms. Greene looked at the suitcase beside the door.
Then she looked at Denise.
"Whose suitcase is that?""
Denise smiled.
"Malik's. He's going to stay with family for a few days.""
Vanessa spoke immediately.
"No, he isn't.""
Ms. Greene glanced between them.
"Would someone explain?""
I stepped forward.
"My wife packed my son's suitcase without my permission and told him he was being sent away. She also showed me a guardianship document that I did not sign.""
Denise shook her head.
"That's not true.""
Ms. Greene opened her folder.
"All right. We'll need to speak with each person separately.""
Denise's smile faded.
Officer Daniels looked toward the staircase.
"Where is Malik?""
"Upstairs," I answered.
"We'd like to speak with him privately, in an appropriate setting.""
I nodded.
"Of course.""
Denise immediately interrupted.
"He's confused. You shouldn't listen to everything he says.""
Ms. Greene looked directly at her.
"Ma'am, we need to hear his account without anyone coaching him.""
Denise pressed her lips together.
Then she did something I wasn't expecting.
She walked toward the staircase.
"Malik!"" she called.
"Come downstairs. These people need to hear the truth.""
I moved in front of her.
"Don't.""
She glared at me.
"He's my responsibility too.""
Ms. Greene stepped between us.
"Mr. Johnson, please allow us to handle this.""
I stepped aside.
A few minutes later, Malik came downstairs with Vanessa.
He looked frightened when he saw the two officials.
Ms. Greene crouched to his eye level.
"Hi, Malik. My name is Ms. Greene. I'm here because some adults are concerned about whether you're getting everything you need at home.""
He nodded.
"Okay.""
"You're not in trouble.""
He looked at me.
I smiled and nodded.
Ms. Greene continued.
"Can you tell me what happens when you're hungry?""
Malik glanced at Denise.
She gave him a warning look.
His lips trembled.
Then he whispered, "Sometimes I have to wait until Dad comes home.""
Ms. Greene nodded gently.
"Why?""
Malik swallowed.
"Because Denise says the food isn't mine.""
The room went silent.
Denise immediately interrupted.
"That's completely false!""
Ms. Greene raised one hand.
"Please let him finish.""
Malik's eyes filled with tears.
"She says I'm eating too much. She says I make things harder for everybody.""
"Has anyone threatened you?""
He looked at the floor.
"She said Dad might send me away if I kept complaining.""
Denise shook her head violently.
"That is a lie!""
Officer Daniels stepped forward.
"Ma'am, you need to stop interrupting.""
Malik wiped his face.
Then he said something that made Vanessa cover her mouth.
"She also told me not to tell Dad about the money.""
I turned toward him.
"What money, son?""
Malik looked at me.
"The money Mom left me.""
Ms. Greene stopped writing.
"What did she tell you about it?""
Malik hesitated.
Then he reached into the pocket of his hoodie.
He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
"I found this in her bedroom.""
He handed it to Ms. Greene.
She unfolded it.
Her expression changed.
I leaned forward.
"What does it say?""
Ms. Greene looked at Officer Daniels.
Then she looked at me.
"It's a handwritten list of financial account details.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Whose handwriting?""
She glanced at Denise.
"That's what we'll need to establish.""
Denise's face had gone completely white.
May you like
And then Malik whispered:
"She said if I told Dad, she would make sure I never saw my money again.""
