Amused

Chapter 6: The Money Renee Left Behind

The room remained silent after Malik's final sentence.

Denise stared at him.

Not with sadness.

Not with regret.

With anger.

"Malik, why would you say something like that?""

He immediately moved closer to Vanessa.

Ms. Greene placed the handwritten paper inside a clear document sleeve.

"Mrs. Johnson, I need you to remain calm while we review this.""

Denise laughed nervously.

"This is insane. He's a child. He doesn't understand financial paperwork.""

I looked at her.

"Then why was he told not to tell me?""

She turned toward me.

"Marcus, please. You know how children misunderstand things.""

I took a step forward.

"Did you access his trust?""

"No!""

"Did you try?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Then why did you have account details?""

Her eyes shifted toward the officials.

"I was organizing family documents.""

Ms. Greene made another note.

"Do you have access to Malik's financial accounts?""

"No.""

"Have you ever requested information from his trustee?""

Denise hesitated.

"Maybe I asked a general question.""

I stared at her.

"What question?""

She snapped.

"Why do you need every single detail?""

"Because it's my son's money!""

"Exactly! Your son's money. Which means his future is your responsibility!""

"His future isn't your bank account!""

Officer Daniels stepped between us.

"Let's keep the conversation calm.""

Ms. Greene looked at Malik.

"Thank you for showing us that paper. You did the right thing.""

Malik nodded.

"Am I going to have to leave?""

"No one is making that decision in this conversation," she answered gently.

"Our job is to understand what's happening and make sure you're safe.""

He looked at me.

I reached for his hand.

"You're staying with me, buddy.""

Ms. Greene nodded.

"Mr. Johnson, we'll need to verify the household arrangements. We may also recommend additional support for Malik.""

"Whatever he needs.""

Denise folded her arms.

"What about my children? Nobody cares what this is doing to Kayla and Jordan?""

Ms. Greene looked at her.

"We care about all the children in this household. We will need to speak with them separately as well.""

Denise shook her head.

"This is unbelievable.""

Officer Daniels turned toward her.

"Ma'am, we'd like you to provide copies of any guardianship documents you possess and identify the person who prepared them.""

She didn't answer.

"Mrs. Johnson?""

"I don't remember.""

I looked at her.

"You showed me the document yesterday.""

"I said I don't remember who prepared it!""

Her voice cracked.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the situation was no longer something she could control by raising her voice.

After the officials left, I took Malik upstairs.

Vanessa stayed with us.

I sat beside him on his bed.

"Buddy, I need to ask you something.""

He looked nervous.

"Okay.""

"That paper you gave Ms. Greene. Where exactly did you find it?""

"In Denise's bedroom.""

"When?""

"Last week.""

"Why were you in her bedroom?""

He shrugged.

"She asked me to bring her phone charger.""

I nodded.

"And you saw the paper?""

"It was on her desk.""

"What made you take it?""

He looked down.

"I saw Mom's name.""

My heart tightened.

"Renee's name?""

He nodded.

"Denise had a picture of Mom's paperwork. I thought maybe it was something Dad needed.""

I took his hand.

"Did you read it?""

"A little.""

"What did it say?""

He swallowed.

"It said Malik's trust. And there were numbers.""

I nodded.

"Did you see anything else?""

He hesitated.

Then he reached into his desk drawer.

This time he pulled out a small notebook.

It was blue, with a basketball sticker on the cover.

"What's that?""

"Nothing.""

I didn't take it.

"Can I see it?""

He looked toward Vanessa.

She smiled gently.

"Only if you want to show him.""

Malik opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten dates and short sentences.

Some entries were only a few words.

Monday: No breakfast. Denise said I was late.

Tuesday: Jordan gave me half his crackers.

Thursday: Pantry locked.

Friday: Denise said Dad was tired of me.

I felt my eyes burn.

There were dozens of entries.

Some described food.

Others described arguments.

One entry was dated three weeks earlier.

Denise said I should stop asking about Mom's money because it isn't mine yet.

I closed the notebook carefully.

"Why did you write all this down?""

Malik rubbed his hands together.

"Because I thought maybe you wouldn't believe me.""

I looked at him.

He was thirteen.

Thirteen years old.

And he had been keeping a record of his hunger because he didn't believe his own father would listen.

I pulled him into a hug.

"I'm sorry.""

He whispered, "It's okay.""

"No, son. It isn't.""

I held him tighter.

"You shouldn't have had to prove anything to me.""

The following afternoon, Daniel called.

"Marcus, I spoke with the estate attorney who manages Renee's trust.""

"What did you find?""

"Someone requested information about the trust three months ago.""

My chest tightened.

"Who?""

"Denise.""

I closed my office door.

"What did she ask?""

"She wanted to know whether a temporary guardian could request distributions for household expenses.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did she have access?""

"No. The trustee refused to provide confidential information without proper authorization.""

I exhaled.

"Thank God.""

"There's more.""

I waited.

"Two weeks later, someone submitted a request to change the mailing address for trust correspondence.""

My stomach tightened again.

"To what address?""

"Your home address was already on file. The requested change was to a post office box.""

"Whose?""

"One registered under a name associated with Denise's personal email.""

I gripped the edge of my desk.

"Did the trustee approve it?""

"No. They contacted you by phone, but you didn't answer. They sent a verification letter to the original address.""

I stared at the wall.

"I never received it.""

Daniel paused.

"That's concerning.""

"How could I not receive it?""

"That's what we're investigating. The trustee has agreed to provide the relevant records to the appropriate authorities.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Daniel, can you find out whether the guardianship document was ever used?""

"That's next on my list.""

I looked through the glass wall of my office.

My employees were reviewing construction drawings.

I could barely focus.

"Daniel, I want Denise out of my son's financial affairs.""

"That's something we can address legally. We also need to protect the trust and preserve all evidence.""

"Do it.""

"I will.""

Then he added something that made me sit down.

"Marcus, I spoke with the trustee. They mentioned another inquiry.""

"What inquiry?""

"Someone asked whether Malik's trust would become accessible if his legal guardian changed.""

I felt cold.

"Who asked?""

"That information is still being verified.""

I swallowed.

"Daniel, please find out.""

That evening, I returned home to find Denise sitting in the living room with Kayla and Jordan.

The television was off.

Her eyes were red.

Kayla was holding a pillow against her chest.

Jordan looked at the floor.

I stopped near the doorway.

"What's going on?""

Denise stood.

"We need to talk.""

"About what?""

"Your decision to bring strangers into our home.""

I set down my keys.

"The school and child welfare professionals are doing their jobs.""

She shook her head.

"They've made me look like a monster.""

I didn't answer.

Kayla looked at me.

"Dad?""

I turned.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

She looked frightened.

"Are you going to make Mom leave?""

Denise immediately placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Don't worry, baby. Nobody is separating us.""

I looked at Kayla.

"Nobody is asking you to choose between your parents.""

Jordan quietly raised his hand.

"Can I ask something?""

"Of course.""

"Is Malik going to live somewhere else?""

"No," I answered.

"Malik is my son, and he's staying with me.""

Jordan nodded.

Then he looked toward his mother.

"Can I tell Dad something too?""

Denise's expression changed.

"Jordan, not now.""

"But—"

"I said not now.""

The little boy lowered his eyes.

I walked toward him.

"Jordan, you can talk to me.""

He looked at his mother again.

Then he whispered, "Mom said we shouldn't tell you about the food.""

Denise stood abruptly.

"That's enough!""

Jordan flinched.

I looked at her.

"Why shouldn't they tell me?""

"Because you're making everything worse!""

Jordan's voice was barely audible.

"She said if we told Dad, we wouldn't get our special snacks anymore.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"What special snacks?""

Jordan looked toward the kitchen.

"The ones Mom keeps in her bedroom.""

Denise's face went white.

I turned toward the kitchen.

"Why are snacks being kept in your bedroom?""

"Because they're mine!""

"Then why did Malik have to ask permission to eat food in the kitchen?""

She opened her mouth.

Vanessa, who had been staying with us to support Malik, entered from the hallway.

"Denise, I think you need to stop.""

Denise turned on her.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. I'm heartbroken.""

Denise laughed.

"You've always wanted Marcus back under your control.""

I stared at her.

"Stop.""

But she continued.

"You've spent years trying to turn him against me because you couldn't accept that he remarried.""

Vanessa looked at her calmly.

"Renee was my sister. Malik is my nephew. I don't need to turn anyone against you. Your own actions are doing that.""

Denise grabbed her handbag.

"I'm leaving.""

I stepped aside.

"You're free to go.""

She stopped.

For a moment, she seemed surprised.

Then she looked at me.

"You can't throw me out of my own home.""

"I'm not discussing that tonight. We'll handle the living arrangements through the proper legal process.""

She stared at me.

"You'll regret this.""

I didn't respond.

She walked upstairs.

A few seconds later, her bedroom door slammed.

At 9:15 p.m., Daniel sent me a message.

Call me immediately. The trustee has located the original guardianship submission.

I stepped into my office and called him.

He answered immediately.

"Marcus, we have a serious problem.""

"What did you find?""

"The document Denise showed you wasn't just a draft. A version of it was submitted to the trust administrator.""

I sat down.

"By whom?""

"Denise.""

"Did they approve it?""

"No. But the submission included a notarized statement claiming you had voluntarily appointed her to manage certain matters involving Malik.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"That's impossible.""

"I know. The trustee rejected the request because the supporting documentation was incomplete.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who notarized it?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said, "A mobile notary who has worked with Denise before.""

"Do we have the name?""

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Daniel read the name.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the same notary who had handled the paperwork when Denise and I refinanced the house.

I stood.

"Daniel, what are you saying?""

"I'm saying we need to determine whether your signature was copied, forged, or obtained through some other means.""

I looked through the office window.

Upstairs, I could hear Malik laughing softly at something Vanessa had said.

That sound was the only thing keeping me calm.

Then Daniel continued.

"Marcus, there's one more thing in the file.""

"What?""

"The trust administrator received a separate request asking whether Malik's inheritance could be transferred into an account controlled by a temporary guardian.""

I gripped the phone.

"Was an account number provided?""

"Yes.""

"Whose account?""

Daniel paused.

Then he gave me the name.

*It belonged to Denise's brother, Anthony.*

I stared at the wall.

The man who had spent Thanksgiving at my house.

The man who had called Malik his nephew.

The man who had once offered to help me manage the family finances.

I slowly sat down.

"Daniel?""

"Yes?""

"Find out how much money they were trying to move.""

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he answered:

"Marcus, based on the documents we've recovered, they weren't asking for a small withdrawal.""

I swallowed.

"How much?""

"Nearly the entire balance of Renee's trust.""

I looked toward the staircase.

May you like

And suddenly, I understood why Denise had been so desperate to make my son disappear from the conversation.

*She hadn't just been trying to control what Malik ate. She had been trying to control what he owned.*
