Chapter 7: The Brother Who Was Waiting for His Money
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Nearly the entire balance of Renee's trust.
The money she had left for our son before she died.
The money intended for college, his first car, and whatever future he wanted to build.
Someone had tried to move it into an account belonging to Denise's brother.
I looked at Daniel.
"Tell me exactly what happened.""
Daniel opened the file on his desk.
"The trust administrator received a request for a substantial distribution. The request claimed the money would be used for Malik's residential care and educational expenses.""
"Residential care?""
"That's how it was described.""
I frowned.
"Malik lives with me. What residential care?""
"That's the problem. The request included a statement suggesting that you were no longer consistently available to care for him.""
My hands tightened.
"Who wrote that statement?""
"According to the submission, Denise.""
I leaned forward.
"She lied about my ability to care for my son to get access to his money?""
"That's what the documents appear to suggest. We need the original records before drawing final conclusions.""
Daniel turned another page.
"The proposed transfer was supposed to go into an account controlled by Anthony Carter.""
"Her brother.""
"Correct.""
I stared at the documents.
"How much?""
"Approximately $184,000.""
I slowly leaned back.
That was almost everything Renee had left.
I remembered the day she signed the trust paperwork.
We had sat in a small attorney's office while Malik played with a toy car beneath the table.
Renee had been tired, but she had insisted on reading every page.
She had looked at me and said, "Marcus, promise me he'll never have to worry about money because we're gone.""
I had promised.
Now, years later, someone had tried to take that promise away from him.
"Did they succeed?"" I asked.
"No. The trustee placed a hold on the requested distribution.""
I exhaled.
"Thank God.""
Daniel closed the folder.
"Marcus, I recommend we arrange an independent review of every document connected to the trust. We should also report the suspected unauthorized request to the appropriate authorities.""
"Do it.""
"And don't contact Anthony or Denise's family about the money until we have a plan.""
I nodded.
But when I left Daniel's office, I knew one thing.
I wasn't going to let anyone take another dollar from my son.
That evening, Anthony called me.
I was sitting at the kitchen table with Malik, helping him finish a science assignment.
My phone lit up.
ANTHONY CARTER.
I stared at the screen.
Malik noticed.
"Is that Uncle Anthony?""
"Yes.""
"Are you going to answer?""
I hesitated.
Then I picked up.
"Hello, Anthony.""
"Marcus! What's going on, brother?""
His voice was cheerful.
Almost offensively cheerful.
"Why did you try to receive money from Malik's trust?""
Silence.
Then a short laugh.
"What?""
"You heard me.""
"Marcus, I think you've got the wrong information.""
"An account under your name was listed as the destination for a transfer of approximately $184,000.""
Another pause.
"Man, I don't know anything about that.""
"Did Denise ask you to provide your banking information?""
"Why are you asking me this?""
"Because your name is on the paperwork.""
He sighed.
"Look, Denise mentioned that Malik might need some financial assistance. I told her I could help manage things if you were overwhelmed.""
"Manage what?""
"His expenses. His future. You know how complicated these family situations get.""
I looked at Malik.
He was pretending to concentrate on his homework.
I stood and walked into the hallway.
"Anthony, did you give Denise your account information?""
He hesitated.
Then he said, "She told me you wanted everything organized.""
"I never said that.""
"Well, that's what she told me.""
"Did you know she was trying to transfer the trust?""
He became defensive.
"Marcus, don't put me in the middle of your marriage problems.""
"This isn't a marriage problem. It's my son's inheritance.""
"Man, I was only trying to help.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
He didn't answer.
I heard a television playing in the background.
Then Anthony said something that made my stomach turn.
"Look, Denise said you were planning to send Malik away anyway. She said the money would be better protected if someone responsible handled it.""
I closed my eyes.
"She said I was sending my son away?""
"That's what I understood.""
I ended the call.
My hands were shaking.
When I returned to the kitchen, Malik was looking at me.
"Was Uncle Anthony mad?""
"No, buddy.""
"Is he coming over?""
I sat beside him.
"Not tonight.""
He looked at his homework.
Then he asked quietly, "Dad, did I do something wrong with Mom's money?""
I felt my chest tighten.
"No.""
"Because Denise said it was too much money for one person.""
I stared at him.
"Malik, that money belongs to you. Your mother worked hard to make sure you would have opportunities. Nobody gets to make you feel guilty for that.""
He nodded.
Then he asked, "Could we use some of it to buy food?""
I couldn't answer immediately.
I pulled him into a hug.
"You never needed your mother's money to deserve food. You should have had all the food you needed right here.""
He rested his head against my shoulder.
"I know.""
But the way he said it told me he was still trying to believe me.
The next morning, Officer Daniels called.
"Mr. Johnson, we've reviewed some of the financial information provided by the trustee.""
"What did you find?""
"We're coordinating with the appropriate authorities to examine the attempted transaction and the supporting documents.""
"Does Denise know?""
"We haven't discussed the financial findings with her yet.""
I nodded.
"Is there anything I should do?""
"Continue preserving all relevant communications. We also recommend that Malik remain in a safe, stable environment while the assessment continues.""
"He's staying with me.""
"Good. We'll be in touch.""
When I ended the call, I found Vanessa standing in the kitchen.
She had brought groceries.
Milk, bread, eggs, fruit, chicken, and several boxes of Malik's favorite cereal.
I smiled faintly.
"You didn't have to do all that.""
She began putting everything away.
"I wanted to.""
Malik entered the kitchen.
His face brightened when he saw the cereal.
"Aunt Vanessa!""
She smiled.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
He hugged her.
Then he looked at the grocery bags.
"Did you get the chocolate cereal?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Two boxes.""
Malik looked at me.
"Can I have some?""
I felt something break inside me all over again.
I walked to the cabinet and took down a bowl.
"Of course.""
Vanessa watched him pour the cereal.
Then she turned toward me.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
We stepped into the living room.
She lowered her voice.
"I found something else.""
"What?""
She pulled her phone from her pocket.
A message thread.
Between Denise and Anthony.
"I found these when Anthony accidentally forwarded me a group message months ago. I didn't think much of it at the time.""
She handed me the phone.
The conversation was dated six months earlier.
*Denise: He won't agree to anything while Malik is still attached to him.*
*Anthony: Then you need to make him understand that the boy needs another home.*
*Denise: I'm working on it.*
*Anthony: And the money?*
*Denise: Once the guardianship is settled, we'll have options.*
I read the exchange twice.
There were more messages.
*Anthony: You said Marcus was going to sign.*
*Denise: He will. I just need the right moment.*
*Anthony: Don't wait too long.*
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why didn't you show me this before?""
She looked ashamed.
"Because I thought it was about ordinary family disagreements. I didn't understand what they were planning.""
I scrolled further.
Then I stopped.
A message dated three weeks earlier.
*Denise: Malik is becoming a problem. He's asking questions about Renee's trust.*
*Anthony: Then make sure he stops talking.*
I looked up.
"Vanessa, did Anthony know about the food situation?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I handed the phone back.
"We need to give this to Daniel and the investigators.""
She nodded.
Then her eyes filled.
"Marcus, I should have protected Malik sooner.""
I shook my head.
"We both should have listened.""
That afternoon, Denise returned home.
She walked into the kitchen carrying a shopping bag.
When she saw me sitting at the table with Vanessa, she stopped.
"What's she doing here?""
"She's visiting Malik.""
Denise placed the bag on the counter.
"She doesn't live here.""
"Neither does your brother.""
Her expression hardened.
"What is that supposed to mean?""
I looked at her.
"Anthony called me.""
For a moment, her face went blank.
Then she smiled.
"Really? What did he say?""
"That you told him I wanted to send Malik away.""
She rolled her eyes.
"He's misunderstood something.""
"Did you ask him to provide his bank account for a transfer from Malik's trust?""
Her hand tightened around the shopping bag.
"Where did you hear that?""
"Is it true?""
She stared at me.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Marcus, we need to discuss this privately.""
"No.""
She glanced at Vanessa.
"Fine. Believe whatever you want.""
I stood.
"Denise, did you tell Anthony that Malik needed to be removed from this household?""
She looked toward the staircase.
Then she whispered:
"You have no idea what that boy has done to this family.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"He's thirteen.""
"And he has been destroying everything since the day you married me!""
The words exploded out of her.
Vanessa stood.
"Stop blaming a child.""
Denise turned toward her.
"You stay out of my marriage!""
I looked at Denise.
"This conversation is over.""
She grabbed her handbag.
"You think you're going to win?""
I didn't answer.
She walked toward the front door.
But before leaving, she turned around.
"There's something you should know, Marcus.""
"What?""
Her expression became strangely calm.
"Anthony wasn't the only person who knew about the money.""
I stared at her.
She smiled faintly.
"Your own attorney knew about the guardianship arrangement.""
Then she walked out.
I immediately called Daniel.
And when he answered, I asked the question that would change everything.
"Daniel, did you ever approve a guardianship document involving Malik?""
There was a long silence.
May you like
Then he said:
"Marcus, I need you to come to my office. There's something about Renee's estate that I never told you.""
