Amused

Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

I stared at the photograph on Denise's phone until the words began to blur.

Temporary Guardianship Authorization.

My name appeared at the top.

Malik's full legal name appeared beneath it.

And beside the witness signature was the name of Renee's younger sister, Vanessa Carter.

I hadn't spoken to Vanessa in almost a year.

The last time we'd seen each other, she had accused Denise of trying to erase Renee from Malik's life.

I had defended my wife.

Now I was looking at a document that appeared to give Denise authority over my son without my knowledge.

"Where did you get this?"" I asked again.

Denise slipped her phone into her pocket.

"I already told you. You signed it.""

"When?""

"Several months ago.""

"That's not an answer.""

She sighed dramatically.

"Marcus, you were dealing with a lot of things. You probably don't remember.""

I stepped closer.

"Then tell me what it was for.""

"It was paperwork for school and medical emergencies. You were traveling constantly, and I needed to be able to make decisions for the children.""

I shook my head.

"I never signed anything giving you guardianship over Malik.""

"You signed it voluntarily.""

"Then show me the original.""

Her expression flickered.

For half a second, she looked uncertain.

Then she folded her arms.

"I don't have to prove anything to you.""

"Actually, you do.""

She laughed.

"You're becoming paranoid.""

I reached for my phone.

"Send me the document.""

"Why?""

"Because my attorney is going to examine it.""

Her smile disappeared.

"Don't bring Daniel into this.""

"Why not?""

"Because he's always hated me.""

I stared at her.

"Daniel has never had an opinion about you. He's my attorney.""

Denise walked toward the staircase.

"Do whatever you want, Marcus. But don't blame me when this family falls apart.""

I watched her disappear upstairs.

Then I called Daniel.

He answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"I need you to look at something.""

I described the document.

He didn't interrupt.

When I finished, he asked me to send the photograph.

I forwarded it.

Several seconds passed.

Then he spoke.

"Where did you get this?""

"My wife showed it to me.""

"Did you sign it?""

"No.""

"Are you absolutely certain?""

"Daniel, I would remember signing a document that gave someone else guardianship over my son.""

"All right. Don't confront her again. I'm going to need the original document, not just a photograph. We also need to determine whether it was ever filed with a court, school, medical provider, or another institution.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Can she use it to take Malik?""

"Not simply by showing you a photograph. But we need to establish what this document actually is and whether anyone has relied on it.""

I looked toward the staircase.

"Daniel, something is wrong here.""

"I believe you. But we need evidence, not assumptions.""

He paused.

"Marcus, one more question. How long has Vanessa been involved?""

"She's not involved. At least, I don't think she is.""

"Then why is her name on the document?""

I didn't have an answer.

The following morning, I called Vanessa.

She answered after five rings.

"Hello?""

"It's Marcus.""

Silence.

Then she sighed.

"What happened?""

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because she sounded as though she had been expecting this call for months.

"I need to ask you about a guardianship document.""

Her breathing changed.

"What document?""

"One with your signature as a witness.""

Another pause.

"Where did you see it?""

"Denise showed it to me.""

Vanessa said something under her breath.

Then she asked, "Marcus, are you alone?""

"Yes.""

"Is Malik okay?""

"He's with me.""

"Good. Listen carefully. I never witnessed you signing guardianship papers.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then why is your name there?""

"I don't know. Denise asked me to sign something at her house last spring. She said it was a school authorization form.""

"What did you sign?""

"Two pages. I didn't read the second one carefully because she said it was about emergency contacts.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did you see my signature?""

"No.""

"Then why did you sign?""

Vanessa's voice became sharper.

"Because she told me you had already approved it.""

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Why didn't you call me?""

"Because I trusted you to know what you were doing.""

I swallowed.

"Vanessa, I need you to tell me something. Did Denise ever discuss Malik with you?""

She was quiet for several seconds.

Then she said, "Yes.""

"When?""

"About six months ago.""

"What did she say?""

"She told me Malik was becoming difficult to manage. She said you were too emotionally attached to him to discipline him properly.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Go on.""

"She asked whether I would ever consider taking Malik temporarily if things became complicated.""

My heart seemed to stop.

"What?""

"She said you were overwhelmed. She said Malik needed a more stable environment.""

I gripped the counter.

"Did she say I wanted to send him to you?""

"She implied it.""

"Did I ever tell you that?""

"No, Marcus.""

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"At the time, I thought she was just complaining. But then she started asking questions about Renee's life insurance, Malik's inheritance, and the house.""

I opened my eyes.

"What inheritance?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Marcus, don't tell me you forgot.""

I felt a chill move through me.

After Renee died, her life insurance had been placed into a trust for Malik. I had managed the account with the help of an estate attorney.

The money wasn't enormous, but it was intended to help with Malik's education and future expenses.

I had never discussed the details with Denise.

At least, I didn't think I had.

"How would Denise know about that?""

"She asked me.""

"What exactly did she ask?""

"Whether Malik could access the money before he turned eighteen. She wanted to know who controlled it and whether a guardian could request withdrawals.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?""

"Because I didn't want to create problems between you and your wife. I thought maybe she was asking because she wanted to help Malik.""

I looked toward the hallway.

"Vanessa, I need you to cooperate with my attorney.""

"I will.""

"And I need the truth, even if it's uncomfortable.""

Her voice softened.

"Marcus, I tried to warn you about her before you married her.""

I remembered.

Vanessa had questioned Denise's intentions during our engagement.

She had said Denise was moving too quickly.

She had asked why someone who had known Malik for only a few months was already making decisions about his school, his schedule, and his relationship with Renee's family.

I had accused Vanessa of being jealous.

I had told her she couldn't accept that I was moving on.

Now I felt sick.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, "Don't apologize to me right now. Protect that little boy.""

That afternoon, Daniel arranged for Vanessa to meet us at his office.

She arrived carrying a brown envelope.

Inside were copies of the two pages Denise had asked her to sign.

Daniel examined them carefully.

The first page was a school emergency-contact authorization.

The second was a temporary caregiver authorization.

But the second page contained language Vanessa said she had never seen.

It referred to Denise as an authorized temporary custodian under certain circumstances.

And beneath that paragraph was a signature resembling mine.

Daniel placed the document on his desk.

"Mrs. Carter, did you personally witness Marcus signing this?""

"No.""

"Did he tell you that he approved the document?""

"No. Denise told me he had already approved it.""

Daniel nodded.

"Thank you. That distinction matters.""

I leaned forward.

"Can you tell whether my signature is real?""

Daniel examined the copy.

"Not reliably from this photograph. We need the original, and we may need a forensic document examiner.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Denise asked me whether Malik had ever said he wanted to live with me.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did you tell her?""

"I told her no.""

"Why was she asking?""

Vanessa opened the envelope again.

This time she pulled out a handwritten note.

"I found this in my purse after I visited her house. I thought it was a shopping list, but I kept it because the handwriting looked familiar.""

She handed it to Daniel.

The note contained several short lines.

Malik unhappy.

Marcus always working.

Vanessa possible placement.

Trust access?

Need Marcus signature.

I stared at the final line.

Need Marcus signature.

Daniel looked up.

"Where did you find this?""

"In my purse. I don't know how it got there.""

"Do you recognize the handwriting?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Denise's.""

Daniel placed the note beside the guardianship document.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Malik.

Dad, can you come home? Denise is making me pack my things.

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

"What?"" Vanessa asked.

I showed her the screen.

Daniel immediately picked up his phone.

"Marcus, don't go in there alone and start an argument. Let's establish what's happening and make sure Malik is safe.""

I was already moving toward the door.

Then another message arrived.

She said Aunt Vanessa is coming to get me.

I stopped.

May you like

Because Vanessa was standing right beside me.

And she hadn't agreed to take Malik anywhere.
