Amused

Chapter 8: The Secret Renee Left in Her Attorney's Office

I drove to Daniel's office the next morning.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Denise's final words.

Your own attorney knew.

I had trusted Daniel for years.

He had handled my business contracts, reviewed the house refinance, and helped me establish Renee's trust.

If he had hidden something from me, I needed to know why.

When I entered his office, he was standing beside the conference table.

A thick file lay in front of him.

"Sit down, Marcus.""

I remained standing.

"Tell me what you know.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Renee came to see me approximately six months before she died.""

My throat tightened.

"Why?""

"She wanted to update certain provisions in Malik's trust.""

I pulled out a chair.

"What provisions?""

"She wanted to make sure that if anything happened to both of you, Malik would remain under the care of someone she trusted.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

"Her sister, Vanessa.""

I slowly exhaled.

"That makes sense.""

Daniel opened the file.

"Renee was also concerned about financial access. She specifically instructed that no future spouse, guardian, or household member should be able to redirect the principal of Malik's trust into a personal account.""

I stared at him.

"She anticipated this?""

"She anticipated the possibility of someone attempting to misuse the money. She wanted safeguards.""

I looked at the documents.

There were Renee's initials on several pages.

Her signature.

Her handwriting.

I recognized all of it.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Daniel paused.

"Because the arrangements were confidential estate-planning instructions. You weren't excluded from your son's care. The document simply established protections that would become relevant under specific circumstances.""

"But Denise told me you approved her guardianship.""

"I didn't.""

"Did you ever speak to her about Malik's trust?""

"She called my office once. She asked general questions about guardianship and financial authority. My staff informed her that she wasn't authorized to receive confidential information.""

I leaned forward.

"Then how did she get the paperwork?""

Daniel turned another page.

"That's what concerns me.""

He placed a copy of an email on the table.

It was dated four months earlier.

The sender was an address associated with Denise.

The recipient was a legal document preparation service.

The subject read:

Temporary Custodial Authority — Malik Johnson.

I read the email.

Denise had asked for help preparing documents that would allow her to make decisions concerning Malik if I became unavailable.

The service had replied with a list of required information.

At the bottom was a note.

Client confirms that the child's biological father has agreed to the proposed arrangement.

I looked up.

"She told them I agreed?""

"Yes.""

"Can we prove I didn't?""

"We can establish that you never signed the original document through a proper review. We also have your communications and the trustee's records.""

I closed my eyes.

"Daniel, what did Renee actually say about Vanessa?""

He reached into the file and pulled out a sealed envelope.

"She left a personal letter.""

My breath caught.

"To Malik?""

"Yes.""

I stared at the envelope.

Renee's handwriting appeared on the front.

For Malik, when he's old enough to understand.

My fingers trembled.

"Why do you have that?""

"She asked me to preserve it with the trust documents. She wanted it delivered when Malik reached a suitable age, or if circumstances made it necessary to protect him.""

I slowly reached for it.

Daniel stopped me gently.

"Marcus, I think you should read it first.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because it explains why she created the protections in the first place.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first sentence nearly brought me to my knees.

My sweet Malik, if you're reading this before you're eighteen, something may have happened that made your father and I worry about your safety.

I stopped.

The room blurred.

Daniel waited quietly.

I continued.

Your father loves you more than anything. Sometimes he works too much because he believes providing for you is the best way to show his love. But remember something: you are not a burden. You never have to earn a place in your own home.

I pressed the letter against the table.

Renee had written those exact words before she died.

And yet they described everything Malik had been experiencing.

I continued.

If I am not here, I want you to stay close to people who make you feel safe. Your Aunt Vanessa has always loved you. She will never ask you to choose between loving me and loving someone else.

My eyes filled.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

The money I leave behind is not more important than you. If someone ever makes you feel that you must give up your happiness to protect that money, walk away. You are my greatest gift, and no amount of money will ever be worth more than your peace.

I couldn't continue.

I folded the letter carefully.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Renee wanted to protect Malik without making him feel like his inheritance was the most important thing about him.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed another document beneath the letter.

A signed amendment to the trust.

I read it.

The amendment contained a provision that I hadn't known existed.

If a person attempted to obtain control of the trust through forged authorization, misrepresentation, or coercion, the trustee was required to freeze discretionary distributions pending an independent review.

The attempted transfer had triggered that provision.

I looked at Daniel.

"She built a safeguard.""

"Yes.""

"Before any of this happened.""

"Yes.""

I sat back.

For the first time in days, I felt something other than anger.

Renee had been gone for four years.

But she had somehow left us a way to protect our son.

That afternoon, I gave the investigators the documents Daniel had located.

They also received the messages between Denise and Anthony.

The financial review was expanded.

The suspected unauthorized signatures were referred for examination.

I was told not to discuss the investigation with Denise or Anthony.

I agreed.

But there was still something I needed to do.

I needed to speak to Malik.

When I arrived home, he was sitting in the backyard shooting baskets.

The ball bounced off the rim.

He chased it and tried again.

I stood near the fence.

"Hey, Steph Curry.""

He turned.

"Dad!""

He grinned.

For the first time in days, the smile reached his eyes.

"Want to play?""

I loosened my tie.

"Absolutely.""

We played for nearly twenty minutes.

He beat me by three points.

When we finally sat on the porch steps, I pulled Renee's letter from my pocket.

"Your mom left you something.""

Malik looked at the envelope.

"Really?""

I nodded.

"She wrote it before she died.""

He carefully opened it.

I watched his face as he read.

At first, he smiled.

Then his eyes filled.

He reached the final paragraph and stopped.

"She knew I might need this?""

I put my arm around him.

"Your mom wanted to make sure you always knew how loved you were.""

He leaned against me.

"Can I keep it?""

"Of course.""

He folded the letter and placed it inside his hoodie pocket.

Then he asked, "Dad?""

"Yeah?""

"Do you think Mom would be mad at you?""

The question caught me off guard.

"Why would you ask that?""

"Because I told you I was hungry, and you didn't know.""

I looked at him.

I wanted to tell him I had been busy.

I wanted to explain that I had trusted Denise.

I wanted to list every reason I hadn't noticed.

But none of those things would make him feel safer.

So I told him the truth.

"I think your mom would want me to listen better. And I'm going to do that.""

He nodded.

Then he leaned his head against my shoulder.

Two days later, Daniel called with an update.

"The document examiner has completed an initial review.""

I stood in my office.

"What did they find?""

"The signature on the guardianship authorization does not appear consistent with your verified signatures.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can they establish who wrote it?""

"They need additional examination, but the irregularities are significant.""

"What's next?""

"The investigator has also requested an interview with Denise and Anthony.""

I nodded.

"All right.""

Then Daniel added:

"There's something else. The trustee located a second attempted transaction.""

I frowned.

"What second transaction?""

"An inquiry into changing the beneficiary designation on a separate education account.""

My stomach tightened.

"Was that successful?""

"No. But the request included a document claiming you had authorized Denise to act on Malik's behalf.""

I stared at my desk.

"How much was in that account?""

"Approximately $32,000.""

I closed my eyes.

Thirty-two thousand.

Another account Renee had helped establish.

Another attempt.

I thanked Daniel and ended the call.

That evening, I found Vanessa in the kitchen preparing dinner.

"Daniel called.""

She looked up.

"What happened?""

"There's another account.""

She put down the knife.

"Marcus...""

"They tried to change the beneficiary information.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"How much?""

"Thirty-two thousand.""

She closed her eyes.

I sat down.

"Vanessa, I need to ask you something.""

"Anything.""

"Did Renee ever tell you she was worried about Denise?""

Vanessa remained still.

Then she nodded.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Before you got married.""

I stared at her.

"What did she say?""

Vanessa wiped her hands.

"Renee once told me that Malik needed adults who would love him without treating him like an obligation.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Did she mention anything else?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"She said something about people who smile when money is involved.""

I looked up.

"Who was she talking about?""

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"Anthony.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Renee had met him a few times before she died. She didn't trust how interested he was in her financial arrangements.""

My hands went cold.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I didn't want to accuse him without proof.""

I leaned back.

Then Vanessa added something that made the entire situation even darker.

"Marcus, Renee told me something else.""

"What?""

"She said Denise had approached her once, months before your wedding, asking whether Malik's trust could ever be used to help pay household expenses.""

I stared at her.

"Before we even got married?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked toward the staircase.

Malik was upstairs reading one of Renee's old books.

The realization settled slowly.

Denise hadn't suddenly become interested in Malik's inheritance.

She had been asking questions about it before she became his stepmother.

Before she moved into my house.

Before I ever called her my wife.

And suddenly, the wedding I had once considered the beginning of a second chance felt like the beginning of a carefully planned deception.

Then my phone rang.

Officer Daniels.

"Mr. Johnson, we need you to come in tomorrow morning.""

"What's happened?""

"We've received additional information from a person connected to the financial documents.""

"Who?""

There was a pause.

Then he answered.

"Anthony Carter has requested to cooperate with the investigation.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because he says Denise told him something he didn't know.""

"What?""

Officer Daniels lowered her voice.

"According to Anthony, Denise claimed she had already received your permission to transfer Malik's money.""

I gripped the phone.

"That's impossible.""

"We understand.""

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

"Mr. Johnson, Anthony also claims Denise has been preparing to leave the state with her children.""

I looked toward the staircase.

May you like

"Did he say when?""

"Tomorrow.""
