Amused

Chapter 8: The Bride's Mother Disappeared

The words sent a ripple through the ballroom.

"Missing?"" Daniel repeated.

Gregory ended the call.

"She isn't answering her phone.""

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"What do you mean she's missing?""

"Your mother left the hotel.""

"I know that!""

"She was supposed to meet someone.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"Who?""

Gregory didn't answer.

I stepped forward.

"You're going to explain everything.""

He looked at me.

"Mr. Bennett, this is not the place.""

"Then you should have thought about that before bringing fraudulent documents into my son's wedding.""

Gregory glanced toward the ballroom doors.

I recognized the calculation in his eyes.

He was deciding whether to leave.

I moved closer.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

Daniel stepped beside me.

"Who was your mother supposed to meet, Vanessa?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Gregory closed his briefcase.

"There's no reason for everyone to become emotional.""

Daniel stared at him.

"You're carrying a document with my mother's forged signature and a loan guarantee using my name. You expect me to be calm?""

Gregory's expression hardened.

"Those are serious allegations.""

"Then answer the questions.""

Gregory looked toward Vanessa.

She was crying.

"Tell him," she whispered.

He shook his head.

"Not here.""

I took out my phone.

"I'm calling my attorney.""

Gregory immediately looked concerned.

"That won't be necessary.""

I stared at him.

"It became necessary when you walked into this ballroom.""

He looked around.

Two hundred guests were watching.

Some had their phones raised.

Others were quietly speaking to one another.

Gregory finally lowered his briefcase.

"Fine.""

He pulled out a chair.

"Let's discuss the situation.""

I remained standing.

"Start with the $750,000.""

Gregory opened a folder.

"The loan was arranged through a private financing company. The money was intended to support a property acquisition.""

"Which property?""

He hesitated.

"The Vermont property.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"My house?""

"Yes.""

Daniel looked stunned.

"Why would anyone borrow money against a house my parents own?""

Gregory adjusted his tie.

"The proposed transaction involved a future transfer into a family holding company.""

I looked at him.

"Without our permission?""

"The documents were intended to establish the necessary authority.""

"That isn't an answer.""

He sighed.

"Mr. Bennett, I was given assurances that all parties had agreed.""

"By whom?""

"Celeste Cole.""

I glanced at Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

Daniel looked at Gregory.

"Did you know my parents never signed those documents?""

Gregory didn't answer.

"Did you know?""

"I prepared them based on information supplied to me.""

"Did you personally verify the signatures?""

Gregory shifted in his chair.

"That wasn't part of my role.""

I laughed.

"You're telling me you prepared a property transfer involving a house worth more than a million dollars without verifying the owners' signatures?""

He looked offended.

"I am not responsible for every document submitted to my office.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Then who is responsible?""

Gregory closed the folder.

"Your mother-in-law.""

Vanessa suddenly looked up.

"Don't put this all on my mother!""

Gregory turned toward her.

"She gave me the instructions.""

"She told you what to do!""

"Because you asked her to arrange the financing.""

Vanessa recoiled.

Daniel looked between them.

"What?""

Gregory removed another document.

It was an email chain.

The first message was from Celeste.

The second was from Vanessa.

The subject line read:

Final steps before ceremony.

Daniel took the pages.

He read the first email.

His expression changed.

"What is this?""

Vanessa whispered:

"Daniel...""

He continued reading.

The message from Celeste said:

Once the ceremony is complete and the marriage certificate is filed, the lender can release the funds. The property documents must be ready beforehand.

The reply from Vanessa was short.

I understand. Daniel won't question anything once we're married. Richard will eventually accept the arrangement.

Daniel looked up.

His face was completely drained of color.

"You wrote this?""

Vanessa reached for the paper.

"Let me explain.""

He pulled it away.

"You wrote that I wouldn't question anything once we were married?""

"I was talking about the paperwork!""

"You were planning to use my marriage to obtain a loan?""

She began crying.

"No. I was trying to protect us.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Protect us from what?""

She looked toward Gregory.

He remained silent.

Then she whispered:

"My father's debts.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"What debts?""

Vanessa sank into the chair.

"His company was in trouble.""

I looked at Gregory.

"How much trouble?""

He answered.

"Approximately $1.8 million.""

Daniel stared.

"One point eight million?""

Gregory nodded.

"Your father-in-law had several outstanding obligations. The proposed financing was intended to consolidate them.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"So the money from my wedding account went toward paying your father's debts?""

She began crying harder.

"Some of it.""

"How much?""

She shook her head.

Gregory answered instead.

"Approximately $86,500 was transferred to Cole Family Holdings.""

I looked at the transaction report.

That matched the amount.

But there was something else.

"Where was the remaining financing supposed to go?""

Gregory looked uncomfortable.

"To settle the existing loans.""

Daniel looked at him.

"And what would happen to my parents' house?""

"It would secure the loan.""

I stepped closer.

"Meaning if the loan wasn't repaid, the lender could pursue the property.""

Gregory nodded.

"That was the proposed arrangement.""

Elaine made a small sound behind me.

I turned.

She had been listening to everything.

Her face was pale.

"Richard, they wanted to take our home?""

I walked to her.

"They tried, sweetheart. But they haven't succeeded.""

She held my hand.

"Why would they do that?""

I had no answer.

Not one that could make sense of such cruelty.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know the house could be lost?""

She didn't respond.

"Vanessa!""

She looked up.

"I thought your father would repay the money.""

"With what?""

"He has investments.""

"What investments?""

She started crying again.

"Daniel, I didn't want you to find out this way.""

He looked at her for a long time.

Then he asked:

"Did you ever intend to tell me?""

Vanessa lowered her head.

Silence.

That silence was the answer.

Suddenly, Monica approached.

"Mr. Bennett, the police are here.""

Gregory stood immediately.

"Police?""

"Yes. The hotel received a call regarding a suspected financial document fraud.""

He looked toward the entrance.

Two uniformed officers walked into the ballroom.

One approached me.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"I'm Officer Harris. We received a report concerning suspicious property documents and possible financial fraud.""

I nodded.

"My attorney is on his way. I have copies of the documents.""

The officer looked toward Gregory.

"Sir, are you Mr. Shaw?""

Gregory swallowed.

"Yes.""

"We'd like to ask you a few questions.""

Gregory looked at Vanessa.

She stared back.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said something that made her panic.

"Officer, I have evidence showing that the instructions came from Celeste Cole and Vanessa Bennett.""

Vanessa jumped up.

"Don't you dare!""

The officer raised his hand.

"Ma'am, please remain calm.""

Gregory opened his briefcase and removed a flash drive.

"I have the original email correspondence and the payment instructions.""

Daniel stared at him.

"You kept copies?""

"Of course.""

"Why?""

Gregory looked at him.

"Because I was told the transaction would be legitimate.""

I stepped forward.

"And when did you discover it wasn't?""

He looked away.

"I began having concerns when the property authorization was rejected.""

"Yet you still prepared the loan guarantee.""

He said nothing.

The officer took the flash drive.

"Sir, we'll need you to accompany us for an interview.""

Gregory nodded.

Then Vanessa suddenly moved toward the exit.

The second officer stepped in front of her.

"Ma'am, we need to speak with you as well.""

She shook her head.

"No. I didn't do anything.""

"Then you can explain that to us.""

She looked toward Daniel.

"Please don't let them do this.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Why did you do it?""

She stared at him.

"I love you.""

He looked down at his wedding ring.

"That isn't an answer.""

The officers began asking questions.

I stepped away with Elaine.

Martin Hayes finally arrived.

He was carrying a thick briefcase and wearing the same dark suit he had worn to my company's retirement dinner three years earlier.

He looked at the documents.

Then at Elaine.

"Are you all right?""

Elaine nodded.

"I'm shaken.""

He looked at me.

"Richard, I've reviewed the latest filing. The attempted lien against your primary residence has been challenged.""

"Can it still go through?""

"Not without proper authorization. We have already submitted an objection.""

I exhaled.

"What about the loan?""

"The lender has been notified of the disputed documents. The transaction should be frozen while the matter is investigated.""

I looked toward the officers.

"Good.""

Martin lowered his voice.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

He opened his briefcase and removed a printed report.

"The email account used to impersonate you was created using information connected to a business server owned by Martin Cole.""

I looked at him.

"Vanessa's father?""

He nodded.

"There's evidence that the same server was used to send instructions to Gregory.""

I glanced toward Vanessa.

"Where is he now?""

"Unknown. But there's an active financial investigation involving his company.""

Martin paused.

"And Richard, I found something in the original property application that you need to see.""

He placed the report in front of me.

It contained a second address.

Not the Vermont property.

Not our home.

A commercial building in Connecticut.

The document listed it as collateral for another loan.

And the property owner was none other than...

Martin Cole.

I frowned.

"Why is his building listed?""

Martin pointed toward the bottom of the page.

"Because the proposed $750,000 loan was only one part of the arrangement.""

I read the final paragraph.

It stated that the financing would be used to release an existing debt secured against Martin's commercial property.

In other words, my house was supposed to help save Vanessa's father's building.

I looked toward Daniel.

"Your father-in-law was trying to use our home to rescue his own property.""

Daniel looked sick.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you know?""

She was crying too hard to answer.

I thought that was the end of the revelations.

It wasn't.

Martin turned another page.

"Richard, the lender has provided preliminary information about the person who arranged the transaction.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

He hesitated.

Then he pointed toward the document.

"The person who introduced Celeste to the lender wasn't Gregory Shaw.""

I looked at the name.

My stomach dropped.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had attended Daniel's engagement dinner.

May you like

Someone who had shaken my hand and congratulated me on raising such a wonderful son.

*My former business partner, Edward Collins.*
