Amused

Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Wedding Money

Vanessa didn't answer.

She simply stared at me.

Celeste bent down to retrieve her handbag, but her fingers were shaking so badly that she dropped it again.

Daniel looked from one woman to the other.

"Who is Gregory Shaw?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Nobody.""

I held up my phone.

"That's interesting. Because my attorney has identified him as the person who submitted the property transfer authorization.""

Daniel frowned.

"Who is he?""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Perhaps your wife can explain.""

She shook her head.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

I opened the email from my attorney.

Gregory Shaw was listed as a document preparer associated with a small legal services office in Hartford.

He had submitted the property transfer request on behalf of Cole Family Holdings.

The same company that appeared in the suspicious wedding transactions.

I had never met him.

But my attorney had.

And he had already discovered something important.

Gregory Shaw had previously worked for Celeste's former business partner.

A man named Martin Cole.

Celeste's ex-husband.

Vanessa's father.

I looked toward Celeste.

"Is Gregory Shaw connected to Martin?""

She stared at me.

"Why are you asking?""

"Because his name appears on documents connected to your daughter's company.""

Celeste looked away.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Mom, who is Gregory Shaw?""

She finally answered.

"An old business acquaintance.""

"Of your father's?""

Celeste nodded reluctantly.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

"How do you know him?""

Vanessa's voice was sharp.

"Why does everyone keep questioning me?""

"Because your name is on the paperwork!""

She pointed toward me.

"Your father is trying to make me look like a criminal!""

I lowered my phone.

"Then explain the documents.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't have to explain anything to you.""

I nodded.

"That's fine. You'll explain it to the investigators.""

Daniel looked alarmed.

"Dad, wait.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Don't involve the police yet.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He glanced toward Vanessa.

"Maybe there's an explanation.""

I felt an ache behind my ribs.

My son was still searching for a reason to believe the woman standing in front of him.

Even after the video.

Even after the signatures.

Even after the money.

"Daniel," I said quietly, "what explanation would make this acceptable?""

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"Someone attempted to transfer your mother's property without her permission. Someone used my name to send a fraudulent email. Someone authorized payments from an account they weren't entitled to control.""

Vanessa snapped.

"You gave me access to the wedding account!""

I turned toward her.

"I gave you a budget.""

"You told Daniel I could manage the expenses!""

"I gave Daniel permission to approve ordinary wedding payments. I never authorized a transfer of family property or payments to an undisclosed company.""

She threw up her hands.

"You're twisting everything!""

Daniel looked at her.

"Did you use the money for something other than the wedding?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Vanessa?""

She finally whispered:

"Some of it.""

Daniel's face went pale.

"How much?""

She looked at the floor.

"Not all of it.""

"How much?""

"I don't know!""

I stepped closer.

"You don't know how much money your company received?""

She glared at me.

"Stop calling it my company!""

I held up the transaction report.

"Your name is on the registration.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Where did the money go?""

Vanessa looked toward Celeste.

Her mother shook her head almost imperceptibly.

I noticed.

So did Daniel.

"Mom?""

Celeste took a breath.

"Some of the funds were used to settle outstanding obligations.""

"What obligations?""

"Business matters.""

Daniel stared.

"What business matters?""

Celeste looked at him.

"Your father doesn't understand the situation.""

I laughed without humor.

"You're right. I don't understand why my wedding fund was used to pay somebody else's debts.""

Celeste's face tightened.

"Martin's business had a temporary cash-flow problem.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Martin?""

"My former husband," Celeste replied.

"I know who he is. Why are we paying his debts?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Because we were going to get the money back!""

Daniel stared at her.

"We?""

She looked at him.

"Your family was going to help us eventually.""

I shook my head.

"Nobody agreed to that.""

Celeste's voice rose.

"Martin built a successful company. He made mistakes, but he deserves an opportunity to recover.""

I looked at her.

"Then you should have used your own money.""

She looked furious.

"Not everyone has a rich husband to rescue them.""

Elaine, who had been sitting quietly near the entrance, slowly stood.

"Celeste, Richard worked for forty-five years to build what we have.""

Celeste turned.

"And now he uses it to humiliate everyone.""

Elaine shook her head.

"No. He uses it to take care of his family. That's what you failed to understand.""

Celeste laughed.

"Your husband doesn't take care of family. He controls them with money.""

Elaine's expression changed.

"Then why did you accept his money?""

The question landed harder than any accusation.

Celeste had no answer.

Daniel looked toward the ballroom doors.

Several guests had begun quietly leaving.

The band members stood near their instruments, unsure whether to continue.

The wedding cake remained untouched.

Two hundred people had arrived expecting champagne, speeches, and dancing.

Instead, they were witnessing the collapse of a family.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

"Come with me.""

She frowned.

"Where?""

"Somewhere private.""

"No.""

"Vanessa, please.""

She folded her arms.

"We are not leaving our wedding because your father has decided to throw a tantrum.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he said something I hadn't heard from him in years.

"Don't call my father that.""

Vanessa looked stunned.

He continued.

"And don't speak about my mother that way again.""

She stared at him.

"Are you seriously choosing them?""

"I'm trying to understand what you've done.""

She laughed bitterly.

"I've done everything for you!""

"Then why did you forge my signature?""

Her expression changed.

"How many times do I have to explain? I didn't forge anything!""

Daniel held up the authorization.

"That's my name.""

"Maybe you signed it and forgot.""

"I didn't.""

"You're always forgetting paperwork!""

He looked at her.

"Not something worth twenty-four thousand dollars.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Daniel, listen to me. We need to talk about this without your parents interfering.""

He shook his head.

"You had three years to talk to me.""

She looked toward the guests.

Then she lowered her voice.

"You don't understand what will happen if you walk away from this.""

Daniel stared.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa looked at Celeste.

Her mother gave a sharp warning look.

But it was too late.

Vanessa continued.

"Your father thinks the money is his. He doesn't know about the other agreement.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"What other agreement?""

Vanessa went silent.

Daniel took a step toward her.

"What agreement?""

She shook her head.

"Forget it.""

"No.""

"Daniel, please.""

He reached for the document in her handbag.

She pulled it away.

"Don't touch my things!""

He froze.

I looked at the handbag.

"Vanessa, what agreement are you talking about?""

She clutched it against her body.

"Nothing.""

Celeste suddenly moved toward the ballroom exit.

I called after her.

"Celeste.""

She stopped.

"Where are you going?""

"I need some air.""

"You're not leaving until we understand what happened to the property transfer.""

She turned sharply.

"You cannot detain me!""

"I'm not detaining anyone.""

I looked toward Monica.

"Please keep copies of all documents and security footage. My attorney will contact you.""

Monica nodded.

Celeste walked out.

Vanessa watched her mother disappear through the doors.

Then she looked at Daniel.

Her eyes were filled with something I hadn't seen before.

Fear.

Not embarrassment.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Daniel," she whispered, "you have to believe me.""

He stared at her.

"About what?""

She took a long breath.

Then she opened her handbag.

She removed a second envelope.

This one was smaller, cream-colored, and sealed with a strip of gold tape.

She handed it to Daniel.

"Your mother wasn't the only person whose signature was used.""

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a document bearing his name.

He read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His hand began to shake.

"Dad...""

I stepped closer.

"What is it?""

He handed me the paper.

I looked down.

It was a personal guarantee for a loan of $750,000.

The borrower was Cole Family Holdings.

The lender was a private investment company.

And Daniel Bennett was listed as the guarantor.

I looked at my son.

"Did you sign this?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

I examined the date.

It was dated six weeks earlier.

The document stated that Daniel had agreed to guarantee the loan using his expected inheritance and future financial interests as security.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Where did you get this?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Gregory gave it to me.""

"Why?""

"Because he said everything was ready.""

Daniel's face had lost all color.

"Everything?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Your father was supposed to transfer the property. The wedding payments were supposed to cover the initial fees. And after the ceremony, we were supposed to finalize the remaining documents.""

I stared at her.

"Who told you this?""

She looked at me.

Then toward the ballroom doors where Celeste had disappeared.

"My mother.""

Daniel looked at the loan guarantee again.

"Why would my mother-in-law need a loan using my inheritance?""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Because she said your family owed us.""

I stared at her.

"Owed you what?""

Vanessa lowered her head.

"Because my father lost everything.""

For the first time, I began to understand that this wedding had never been about a celebration.

It had been about money.

A very large amount of money.

And my son had been placed in the middle of a financial arrangement he knew nothing about.

I looked at the final page of the guarantee.

There was another signature.

Not mine.

Not Elaine's.

Not Daniel's.

It belonged to Gregory Shaw.

But beneath his signature was a handwritten note.

A note that made me look up immediately.

*"Release funds only after the marriage certificate is filed.""*

I turned toward Daniel.

"Son, we need to find out exactly who was supposed to receive that $750,000.""

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

It was my attorney.

I stepped away from the stage and answered.

"Richard Bennett.""

His voice was unusually tense.

"Richard, I've just received an update from the county office.""

"What is it?""

"The property transfer wasn't the only application submitted in your name.""

I gripped the phone.

"What do you mean?""

There was a pause.

Then he said:

"Someone also filed a request to place a lien against your primary residence.""

I looked across the ballroom at Elaine.

Our home.

The house where we had raised Daniel.

The house where Elaine still kept his childhood drawings in an old wooden box.

I lowered my voice.

"Who submitted it?""

My attorney answered.

"Gregory Shaw. And Richard, there's something else you need to know.""

"What?""

"The application includes a document stating that your wife personally guaranteed the loan.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Elaine had never signed anything.

Never.

And now someone was trying to put our home at risk using her name.

I looked toward Daniel.

He was still holding the $750,000 guarantee.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

"Your mother told you this was all arranged?""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

I ended the call.

And for the first time that afternoon, I wasn't thinking about the wedding, the money, or the humiliation.

I was thinking about protecting my wife.

Because whoever had orchestrated this had made one enormous mistake.

They had assumed that a sixty-three-year-old woman covered in mud would be too embarrassed to fight back.

May you like

They had forgotten that she was my wife.

And I was no longer interested in keeping the peace.
