Chapter 3: The House They Thought I Had Given Away

"The house?""
Daniel looked confused.
Celeste's hand tightened around Vanessa's wrist.
"Don't be ridiculous. I was talking about the hotel arrangements.""
Vanessa pulled away.
"Mom, stop!""
I stepped forward.
"Which house?""
Celeste forced a laugh.
"Richard, you're misunderstanding a private family conversation.""
I looked at her.
"I've misunderstood enough things today.""
Daniel still held the transfer authorization.
He turned toward Vanessa.
"What house are you talking about?""
She looked at him.
Then at her mother.
Then back at him.
For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa seemed unable to find the right words.
I recognized that expression.
It was the look of someone who had prepared several lies but hadn't expected to be asked the wrong question.
I reached inside my jacket and removed another envelope.
This one contained a copy of a property deed.
I had brought it because I had intended to discuss it with Daniel after the wedding.
Now I was beginning to wonder whether I had been foolish to wait.
"Three months ago," I began, "I received a letter from the county property office.""
Celeste shifted her weight.
"Richard, this is becoming absurd.""
I ignored her.
"The letter concerned a property transfer request involving my lake house.""
Daniel looked up.
"Your lake house?""
I nodded.
"The house in Vermont. The one your mother and I bought twenty-six years ago.""
Elaine stepped closer.
"Richard, what letter?""
I turned toward her.
"I didn't want to worry you until I knew what was happening.""
She looked at the envelope.
Then at me.
"What happened?""
I opened it.
"Someone attempted to transfer ownership of the property.""
Daniel stared.
"To whom?""
I looked at Vanessa.
She turned away.
"To a company called Cole Family Holdings.""
Celeste's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Daniel didn't.
He was still trying to understand.
"Why would anyone transfer your house?""
"That's what I wanted to know.""
I removed the property records.
The house had been purchased in Elaine's name and mine. It was our retirement property, a place where we had planned to spend summers after I sold my company.
The transfer request had been submitted with a notarized authorization.
It claimed that Elaine and I had agreed to place the property under a family holding company.
Neither of us had signed it.
My attorney had immediately filed a formal objection.
The transfer was stopped before it could be completed.
But the paperwork revealed something troubling.
The application had been prepared by an attorney whose office had previously represented Celeste's business.
And the contact person listed on the application was Vanessa.
Daniel looked at the document.
"Vanessa?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know anything about this.""
I placed another sheet beside it.
"Your name is listed as the contact person.""
"That doesn't mean anything.""
"Your email address is on the application.""
"Anyone could have used it!""
"Your phone number is there too.""
She looked toward Celeste.
Her mother said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Why would you want my parents' house?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Because we were planning our future!""
"With their property?""
"Don't make it sound criminal!""
I looked at her.
"Then explain why the application claimed Elaine and I had signed a transfer authorization.""
She lifted her chin.
"Your attorney probably made a mistake.""
"My attorney didn't prepare the document.""
"Then someone else did!""
"Yes," I said.
"Someone did.""
I let the silence settle.
Then I continued.
"Someone also submitted a copy of Elaine's signature.""
My wife gasped.
"Mine?""
I nodded.
"That's why I didn't tell you immediately. I wanted to find out how it happened.""
Elaine took my arm.
"Richard, I never signed anything.""
"I know, sweetheart.""
Daniel stared at the document.
"Vanessa, tell me the truth.""
She looked at him with sudden fury.
"Why are you questioning me instead of your father?""
"Because your name is on the application!""
"He's trying to turn you against me!""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"This doesn't make sense.""
I watched him.
For months, I had tried to explain that his fiancée's behavior was troubling.
He had called me controlling.
He had said I didn't understand modern relationships.
He had accused Elaine and me of being jealous because he was building a life of his own.
Now the evidence was lying in front of him.
I wished I felt satisfied.
I didn't.
I felt tired.
"Daniel," I said, "I want you to understand something. I never intended to stop you from getting married. I never wanted to choose your wife for you. I only wanted to make sure the woman you married loved you for the right reasons.""
Vanessa laughed.
"That's rich coming from a man who thinks money buys respect.""
I looked at her.
"No. But apparently, it buys your attention.""
A few guests whispered.
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"You think you're better than us because you built a company?""
"No.""
"Because you have a big house?""
"No.""
"Because you can wave a check around?""
I shook my head.
"You're confusing wealth with character.""
Her face tightened.
"You have no idea what I've sacrificed to be part of this family.""
I glanced at Elaine.
"What exactly have you sacrificed?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Then Celeste intervened.
"Richard, enough. You are humiliating your son.""
I looked at her.
"Your daughter pushed his mother into the mud.""
"She lost her balance!""
"Your daughter registered a company that received eighty-six thousand dollars from my wedding fund.""
"Those were legitimate expenses!""
"And someone submitted an unauthorized property transfer.""
Celeste's voice dropped.
"Be careful what you accuse people of.""
I nodded.
"I've been very careful. That's why my attorney has copies of everything.""
She looked toward the ballroom doors.
For a second, I thought she might leave.
Instead, she straightened her dress and approached Daniel.
"Daniel, darling, you know how stressful this has been for Vanessa. She has worked so hard to make today perfect.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Did you know about the property transfer?""
Celeste didn't answer immediately.
That pause told me more than any denial could.
"Mom?""
She sighed.
"I knew there was a discussion about the Vermont property.""
Elaine stepped forward.
"A discussion?""
Celeste looked at her.
"Your son and Vanessa needed somewhere to live.""
I stared.
"They have an apartment.""
Celeste waved dismissively.
"A small apartment. Vanessa deserves better.""
Daniel frowned.
"We've never discussed moving to Vermont.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Not with you.""
He blinked.
"What?""
She took a breath.
"Your father promised to help us. He said he wanted to give us something substantial.""
I looked at her.
"I promised to help with your wedding.""
"And the house was part of the family plan!""
"No.""
My voice was firm.
"The house belongs to Elaine and me.""
Vanessa's expression became ugly.
"You're sixty-eight years old. What do you need a second house for?""
Elaine went still.
I felt something rise inside me.
Not anger this time.
Something colder.
I stepped closer.
"That house is where I carried my wife across the threshold after we bought it. It's where Daniel learned to swim. It's where we spent the last summer with my father before he died.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Memories don't pay bills.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Vanessa.""
She looked at him.
"What?""
"Stop.""
She rolled her eyes.
I continued.
"Your mother and I worked our entire lives to create something for our family. We wanted to leave our children more than money. We wanted to leave them a sense of belonging.""
I folded the property papers.
"But I will not let anyone steal that from us.""
Daniel looked at the documents again.
His face had gone pale.
"Did you submit the transfer, Vanessa?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't submit anything.""
"Then who did?""
She looked at Celeste.
Her mother immediately stepped backward.
I noticed.
So did Daniel.
"Mom?""
Celeste looked furious.
"Don't drag me into this.""
Daniel's voice became sharper.
"Your name is on the attorney's correspondence.""
Celeste said nothing.
Then Vanessa suddenly began crying.
Not quietly.
She covered her face and sobbed.
"Nobody understands what I've been dealing with!""
Daniel moved toward her.
"Vanessa...""
She pushed his hand away.
"Your parents have treated me like an outsider from the beginning!""
Elaine looked genuinely shocked.
"Vanessa, I invited you to every family holiday.""
"You always made me feel unwelcome!""
"I cooked your favorite meal when you visited.""
"You made me feel like I owed you something!""
Elaine lowered her eyes.
I stepped between them.
"Enough.""
Vanessa pointed at me.
"You've always wanted to control Daniel. You paid for everything so you could hold it over his head.""
I stared at her.
Then I looked toward the two hundred guests.
"Let me ask everyone here something.""
Nobody moved.
"If someone pays for your wedding, does that give them the right to control your marriage?""
A few guests shook their heads.
I continued.
"Of course not. But does getting married give you the right to take their property?""
Silence.
"Does being a bride give you permission to shove an older woman into the mud?""
Nobody answered.
I turned toward Daniel.
"I am not asking you to choose between your wife and your parents. I am asking you to choose the truth.""
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at the papers.
Then at Elaine.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Mom, did you really just want to help Vanessa with her dress?""
Elaine nodded.
"Yes, darling.""
He closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
It was the first apology I had heard from him all afternoon.
Elaine reached toward him.
But before she could touch his hand, Vanessa stepped between them.
"Don't you dare make this about your mother!""
Daniel looked at her.
"Move.""
She froze.
"What?""
"Move, Vanessa.""
Her face changed.
Then she whispered something that only the people nearest the stage could hear.
"You have no idea what I've already signed.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What did you sign?""
She looked toward her mother.
Celeste closed her eyes.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
"Your name is on the marriage settlement agreement.""
Daniel frowned.
"What marriage settlement?""
She reached into her bridal bouquet and pulled out a folded document.
"I had it prepared before the ceremony.""
She placed it in his hand.
He unfolded the first page.
His eyes moved across the printed paragraphs.
Then he stopped.
I watched his expression collapse.
"What is this?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"It's protection for our future.""
Daniel looked at the signature line.
His voice was barely audible.
"Why does this say that my parents' assets become part of our marital estate?""
I looked at the paper.
Then at Vanessa.
And suddenly, the suspicious payments, the property transfer, and the wedding invoices began to look like pieces of the same puzzle.
But the final line on that agreement was even more disturbing.
Because it named someone who wasn't standing in the ballroom.
May you like
Someone whose signature had supposedly authorized the entire arrangement.
*Elaine Bennett.*
