Amused

Chapter 7: The Recording That Exposed Everything

I looked at Elaine standing near the ballroom entrance.

Her powder-blue dress was ruined. Mud had dried along the sleeves, and a small tear exposed the lining near her hip. She was holding a glass of water Monica had brought her.

She looked exhausted.

But when our eyes met, she smiled.

It was the same smile she had given me forty years earlier when we were standing outside a courthouse after getting married.

I had promised to protect her then.

I intended to keep that promise now.

I walked toward her.

"Sweetheart, we're going home.""

She glanced toward Daniel.

"What about him?""

I followed her gaze.

Our son was standing on the stage with the $750,000 loan guarantee in his hands.

Vanessa was beside him, speaking rapidly.

"Daniel, you need to understand. Your mother and I were trying to secure our future.""

He shook his head.

"Using my name?""

"Your father was going to help us!""

"He never agreed to this!""

"You don't know that!""

Daniel looked at her.

"I just asked him.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Then maybe you should stop asking questions in front of everyone.""

I reached for Elaine's handbag.

"Let's go.""

She caught my hand.

"Richard, I want to know what happens.""

I looked at her.

She had every reason to leave.

But I understood.

This wasn't simply about a wedding anymore.

It was about her name, our home, and the years we had spent building a life together.

"All right," I said.

"But you stay beside me.""

We returned to the stage.

Daniel immediately approached.

"Dad, the attorney needs to see these documents.""

"He will.""

"Can you call him?""

"He's already working on it.""

Daniel glanced at the loan guarantee.

"I never signed this.""

"I believe you.""

He looked relieved.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Daniel, please. You know I wouldn't do anything to hurt you.""

He stared at her.

"Then why is my signature on a three-quarter-million-dollar guarantee?""

"I told you. Gregory handled the paperwork.""

"Who is Gregory?""

She hesitated.

"Someone my mother knows.""

"How long have you known him?""

"Daniel, this isn't the time.""

"How long?""

Vanessa looked toward the guests.

"About a year.""

Daniel stared.

"A year?""

"Yes.""

"Before we got engaged?""

She nodded.

He looked at me.

I could see the realization settling in.

Gregory hadn't appeared because of the wedding.

He had been involved long before it.

"Why?"" Daniel asked.

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"My mother needed help with some financial arrangements.""

"What arrangements?""

"Her business.""

"Which business?""

She sighed.

"Daniel, please stop.""

He stepped backward.

"You're asking me to marry you, but you won't tell me who you've been working with?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I love you.""

He didn't respond.

I took my phone out and called my attorney again.

"Martin, I need you to come to the hotel.""

My attorney, Martin Hayes, had represented me for nearly twenty years.

He was seventy-one, methodical, and famously unimpressed by theatrics.

"Richard, I'm already on my way. I've contacted the county office and the bank.""

"Bring everything you have on Gregory Shaw.""

"I will. There's something else. Have you preserved the original email?""

"Yes.""

"Good. Don't allow anyone to handle those documents without recording who has them.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Understood.""

I ended the call.

Then Monica approached.

"Mr. Bennett, there's something I think you should know.""

She looked uncomfortable.

"What is it?""

"One of the event staff members received a phone call about twenty minutes ago.""

"From whom?""

"Someone claiming to represent the wedding's financial coordinator.""

I frowned.

"What did they want?""

"Copies of the vendor contracts and the payment schedule.""

"Who gave them permission?""

"No one. I refused.""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

Monica hesitated.

"There's something else.""

She glanced toward Vanessa.

"That person also asked whether the marriage certificate had been signed.""

Daniel turned immediately.

"What?""

Monica looked at him.

"They specifically wanted to know whether the marriage certificate had been completed and filed.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Monica, please stop spreading rumors.""

Monica looked at her.

"I'm telling Mr. Bennett what happened.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"You're supposed to be running a wedding, not participating in family arguments.""

Monica's expression changed.

"I've been running this wedding for six months. I've also received seventeen different instructions from your family about who should pay which invoice.""

Vanessa stared.

Monica continued.

"Several vendors contacted me this morning because they hadn't received the deposits they were promised.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What deposits?""

"The floral company was told the balance would be paid after the ceremony. The transportation company was told your father had authorized another payment. And the photographer was told the remaining amount would come from an account belonging to Cole Family Holdings.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Another account?""

She said nothing.

Monica opened her folder.

"I have copies of all the instructions.""

Daniel took the folder.

He read the first page.

Then another.

His expression became increasingly troubled.

"Why does this say my father agreed to pay another thirty thousand dollars?""

I answered.

"Because I didn't.""

Monica nodded.

"I know. That's why I refused to process it.""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"How many accounts are involved?""

She whispered:

"I don't know.""

"How many?""

"I said I don't know!""

Her voice cracked.

A few guests turned.

Vanessa covered her face.

Then she began sobbing.

"Nobody understands what my mother has put me through!""

Celeste had been gone for nearly twenty minutes.

I looked toward the entrance.

"Where is your mother?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel turned toward Monica.

"Can someone check whether she's still here?""

Monica nodded and walked away.

I was about to ask another question when a man near the back of the ballroom raised his hand.

He was a middle-aged guest wearing a gray suit.

"Excuse me.""

Everyone turned.

He looked directly at Daniel.

"I'm sorry to interrupt, but I think you should know something.""

Daniel frowned.

"Do I know you?""

The man nodded.

"I'm Peter Walsh. I work with your future brother-in-law's former business partner.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

Peter glanced toward Vanessa.

"Gregory Shaw used to work for a company I audited.""

Vanessa went completely still.

Peter continued.

"He's been involved in several disputed financial transactions over the past year.""

Celeste's name had apparently brought back memories for him.

I stepped closer.

"Do you know him personally?""

"Professionally. I never worked directly with him, but I reviewed records involving companies he represented.""

Daniel held up the loan guarantee.

"Does this company mean anything to you?""

Peter examined the page.

Then he looked at the name of the lender.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"From my wife.""

Peter lowered his voice.

"Daniel, you need independent legal advice before you sign anything else.""

"I didn't sign it.""

Peter nodded.

"Then don't.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You're not qualified to give legal advice.""

Peter looked at her.

"I didn't say I was. I said I've seen this company before.""

He pointed toward the lender's name.

"It was involved in a disputed financing arrangement connected to a property development in Connecticut.""

I felt a chill.

"What happened?""

Peter looked at Daniel.

"The development collapsed. Several investors lost substantial amounts of money.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's completely unrelated.""

Peter didn't argue.

He simply stepped back.

Then Monica returned.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Yes?""

"Celeste has left the hotel.""

"Did she say where she was going?""

"No. But she left something behind.""

Monica handed me a small black folder.

It had been sitting beneath the chair Celeste occupied.

I opened it.

Inside were printed emails, bank details, and a handwritten list of names.

At the top of the list was Gregory Shaw.

Below him was Martin Cole.

And beside those names was a third name.

Daniel Bennett.

I stared at it.

Beside Daniel's name were three words:

*BRIDE. CERTIFICATE. RELEASE.*

I felt my stomach tighten.

I handed the folder to Martin's office through a photograph and called him.

He answered immediately.

"Richard?""

"I found something.""

I described the folder.

There was a pause.

Then he asked:

"Is Daniel with you?""

"Yes.""

"Tell him not to sign or acknowledge anything. I'm almost there.""

I looked toward my son.

He was staring at Vanessa.

"Why is my name on this list?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I don't know.""

"Why does it say certificate?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know!""

Daniel took a step toward her.

"Vanessa, I need you to tell me the truth.""

She looked at him.

Then she glanced toward the ballroom entrance.

Her face changed.

I followed her gaze.

A man in a dark suit had just entered.

He was carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked around the ballroom, then walked directly toward Vanessa.

She whispered:

"Gregory.""

The man stopped beside her.

He looked at the documents in Daniel's hand.

Then at me.

"Mr. Bennett," he said calmly.

"I believe there's been a misunderstanding.""

I stepped forward.

"Are you Gregory Shaw?""

He hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Did you submit a property transfer request using my wife's signature?""

His expression remained neutral.

"I prepared documents based on instructions provided to my office.""

"Whose instructions?""

He looked toward Vanessa.

She lowered her eyes.

Gregory placed his briefcase on a nearby table.

"Perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

Daniel stepped between them.

"No. You're going to explain why my name is on a $750,000 guarantee.""

Gregory looked at the paper.

Then he sighed.

"Mr. Bennett, your wife can explain that.""

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

"Tell him.""

She began crying again.

Gregory opened his briefcase.

He removed a second document.

"This is the original authorization.""

He placed it on the table.

I looked down.

It carried Elaine's signature.

But something else caught my attention.

The document had been witnessed by a notary.

And the notary's stamp was dated three weeks before Elaine had supposedly signed it.

I looked at Gregory.

"How do you explain that?""

He closed the briefcase.

"I suggest you speak with your attorney.""

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Your mother said the certificate would be completed today.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"What certificate?""

Gregory looked at him.

For the first time, his composure cracked.

He glanced toward the guests.

Then he said:

"The certificate that would trigger the release of the funds.""

And with that single sentence, he confirmed that the wedding had been designed around something none of us had understood.

The marriage itself was the final condition.

But before I could question him further, Gregory's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face went white.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

May you like

He looked directly at Vanessa.

"Your mother has just been reported missing.""
