Chapter 5: The Inheritance That Was Never Promised

Daniel looked at me.
"Dad, what is she talking about?""
I didn't answer immediately.
Instead, I walked toward Elaine and helped her sit in the nearest chair.
Her back was still hurting.
I asked Monica to bring some water.
Then I returned to the stage.
"Vanessa seems to believe that I promised her an inheritance.""
Celeste immediately interrupted.
"Richard, don't turn this into a discussion about private family finances.""
I looked at her.
"Your daughter brought it up.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I didn't mean it like that.""
"Then explain what you meant.""
She glanced at Daniel.
"I thought your father had already discussed it with you.""
Daniel frowned.
"He hasn't.""
Vanessa looked increasingly uncomfortable.
I continued.
"Three months ago, my attorney reviewed my estate documents. I wanted to make sure everything was properly organized.""
Daniel nodded.
"I remember you mentioning that.""
"At that time, I updated the beneficiaries and established a trust for certain family assets.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
I noticed it immediately.
She had been expecting something.
Perhaps a confirmation.
Perhaps a denial.
But she wasn't expecting me to speak about the trust in front of everyone.
I continued.
"The trust was designed to protect the property Elaine and I worked for throughout our marriage. It was not created to finance anyone's wedding, business, or lifestyle.""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"That's not what I heard.""
"What did you hear?""
She looked toward Celeste.
Her mother stared at the floor.
Vanessa swallowed.
"I heard that Daniel would receive the Vermont property.""
I nodded.
"Eventually, yes. Under certain conditions, the property may pass to Daniel. But it remains Elaine's and my property while we're alive.""
Daniel looked at me.
"You never told me that.""
"I didn't think I needed to. It was estate planning, not a wedding present.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"But you said the family would be taken care of.""
"I said I wanted my family to be taken care of.""
"Exactly!""
She pointed at me.
"That's what we were relying on!""
I stared at her.
"Relying on what?""
"Your promise!""
I shook my head.
"Vanessa, I have never promised you ownership of anything.""
She turned toward Daniel.
"Your father told me he wanted to make sure we were comfortable.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Did he say that?""
"Yes!""
I answered before Daniel could.
"I said I hoped you would have a comfortable life. I also said that Elaine and I would help you when we could.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Same thing.""
"No. It isn't.""
Celeste finally spoke.
"Richard, perhaps you should remember that young people build their lives around expectations.""
I turned toward her.
"Expectations aren't property rights.""
She looked offended.
"You've always made us feel inferior.""
I glanced at her diamond necklace.
"That's interesting. I don't remember asking you to spend your money.""
Her cheeks flushed.
Vanessa moved closer to Daniel.
"Baby, please. Let's go somewhere private.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"Why are you doing this to me?""
"I'm trying to understand what happened.""
She began crying again.
"Your father is trying to destroy us before we've even had our first dance.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Then help me understand.""
He held up the marriage settlement.
"Why is my mother's signature on this?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Because your mother agreed.""
Elaine stood.
Her voice was soft but clear.
"I did not.""
Vanessa spun toward her.
"Mrs. Bennett, please don't lie.""
I took a step forward.
"That's enough.""
But Elaine touched my arm.
"Let me speak.""
I turned toward her.
She looked tired.
Her gown was ruined. Her hair was disheveled. A faint bruise had begun forming near her wrist.
Yet she walked toward Vanessa without hesitation.
"Vanessa, when you first came into our family, I welcomed you.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Here we go.""
"I invited you to dinner. I remembered your birthday. I bought you a little silver bracelet for Christmas because you once told me you liked simple jewelry.""
Elaine's voice trembled.
"I never expected you to love me like your own mother. But I hoped you would treat me with kindness.""
Vanessa looked away.
Elaine continued.
"Today, I saw your dress dragging through the wet grass. I thought you might trip. I wanted to help you.""
She paused.
"That's all.""
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she muttered:
"Maybe you should have minded your own business.""
Elaine's face crumpled.
I wanted to shout.
I wanted to drag my son away from that woman.
But I stayed still.
Because Daniel was watching.
And sometimes the truth needed room to speak.
He turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you really push her?""
Vanessa sighed.
"I already explained what happened.""
"No. You haven't.""
She looked at him.
"Daniel, I'm your wife.""
He glanced at the wedding ring on his finger.
"We've been married for less than two hours.""
The words seemed to strike her.
She stepped backward.
"Are you threatening me?""
"No. I'm asking you to tell the truth.""
She looked toward the guests.
Then toward her mother.
Then she made a decision.
She reached into her handbag and removed her phone.
"Fine.""
She unlocked it.
"Since everyone wants the truth, let's talk about the money your father promised.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What money?""
She tapped the screen.
"Your father sent me an email three months ago.""
I frowned.
"From me?""
"Yes.""
She held up the phone.
Daniel took it.
He read the message.
His face changed.
"What's this?""
I approached.
It was an email printed on a screen.
The sender's display name showed my full name.
The message read:
Vanessa, once the wedding is complete, I intend to transfer the Vermont property into the family trust for Daniel's benefit. I also want to make sure you have sufficient funds to establish your new home. Please keep this arrangement between us until the paperwork is finalized.
At the bottom was a signature.
Richard Bennett.
My signature.
But I had never written that email.
I took the phone from Daniel.
"Where did you get this?""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You sent it.""
"No, I didn't.""
"Of course you did.""
I examined the sender address.
It looked familiar at first glance.
But there was a small difference.
My actual email address ended in a company domain.
This one ended in a nearly identical domain with one letter changed.
I looked at Daniel.
"Did you know about this email?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"When did you receive it?""
"Three months ago.""
"Why didn't you tell Daniel?""
"Because your father asked me to keep it private.""
I looked at her.
"That wasn't me.""
She shrugged.
"Prove it.""
I returned the phone to Daniel.
"Save the message. Don't delete anything.""
Vanessa looked annoyed.
"Why?""
"Because my attorney will need it.""
She laughed.
"You're threatening legal action over an email?""
"No. I'm investigating why someone created an email using my name to promise property I never offered.""
Celeste stepped forward.
"Richard, this is getting ridiculous.""
I turned toward her.
"Do you recognize the email?""
She hesitated.
Only a fraction of a second.
But enough.
I stared at her.
"Have you seen it before?""
"No.""
Vanessa looked at her mother.
"Mom?""
Celeste shook her head.
"Don't involve me.""
Daniel looked between them.
"Why would you say that?""
Celeste straightened.
"Because I have nothing to do with this.""
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
"Mom, you told me everything was arranged.""
Celeste's face hardened.
"Not now.""
Daniel caught the words.
"Everything was arranged?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I stepped toward her.
"Vanessa, what exactly were you expecting to receive after this wedding?""
She didn't answer.
I looked at Celeste.
"And what did you tell your daughter?""
Celeste raised her chin.
"Enough.""
I nodded.
Then I pulled out my phone.
I had already sent the suspicious email to my attorney.
He had replied less than ten minutes earlier.
I opened his message.
There were three lines.
The first said the property transfer had been formally challenged.
The second said the bank had been notified about the suspicious transactions.
The third said something I hadn't expected.
My attorney had identified the person who submitted the false property authorization.
I read the name twice.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
"Do you know a man named Gregory Shaw?""
Her face went completely white.
Celeste dropped her handbag.
May you like
And Daniel whispered:
"Why does that name sound familiar?""
