Chapter 2: The Envelope That Made the Bride Tremble

"Give me that paper!""
Vanessa's voice echoed across the ballroom.
She rushed toward the stage, her white dress sweeping across the marble floor.
Daniel caught her arm.
"Vanessa, stop!""
"Your father has no right to do this!""
I held the envelope above my head.
"Actually, I have every right to ask where my money has been going.""
The ballroom fell silent.
Celeste stood near the front table, gripping her champagne glass so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
I looked toward Monica.
"Please ask the vendors not to process any additional payments from my account. My attorney will contact them directly regarding the existing agreements.""
Monica nodded cautiously.
"Understood, Mr. Bennett.""
Vanessa spun toward her.
"You can't listen to him! The wedding is already paid for!""
I looked at her.
"Is it?""
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I unfolded the document.
It was a printed bank transaction report, accompanied by invoices and copies of several payment instructions.
For six weeks, I had been investigating suspicious transfers from an account I maintained specifically for Daniel's wedding.
The first irregularity appeared in late September.
A payment of $18,500 had been transferred to a company called V.C. Event Consulting.
I had never heard of it.
The second payment was $12,000.
The third was $24,000.
All three had been described as wedding-related expenses.
But the company wasn't listed among the approved vendors.
I had asked Daniel about it.
He told me Vanessa had hired an outside coordinator.
I had accepted his explanation.
Then another invoice arrived.
This one was for $31,000.
The description read: FAMILY RELOCATION AND EVENT LOGISTICS.
That made no sense.
The wedding was being held at a hotel less than twenty miles from our home.
I called my accountant.
He checked the company registration.
Then he called me back.
"Richard, I think you need to see this in person.""
That afternoon, he showed me the business records.
V.C. Event Consulting had been registered only four months earlier.
Its listed owner was Vanessa Cole.
Its registered address was the same address as Celeste's private residence.
And its business account had received more than $86,000 from the wedding fund.
I had spent the next six weeks tracing the money.
Now I stood in front of two hundred guests with the evidence in my hands.
Vanessa stared at the papers.
"You're violating my privacy!""
I almost smiled.
"With my own bank statements?""
"You have no idea what you're talking about!""
"Then explain the invoices.""
She looked toward Celeste.
Her mother stepped forward.
"Richard, this is a private financial disagreement. It has no place at a wedding.""
I nodded.
"You're right. It should have been discussed privately.""
I looked at Elaine.
She was still standing near the entrance, holding my jacket around her shoulders.
"Unfortunately, your daughter chose to make my wife the entertainment for the afternoon.""
Celeste's lips tightened.
"That was an accident.""
"Then perhaps the bank statements are accidents too.""
I lifted the first page.
"Let's start with the company that received eighty-six thousand dollars.""
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
Vanessa shook her head.
"Those were legitimate planning expenses.""
"Really?""
I turned toward the guests.
"Has anyone here ever heard of V.C. Event Consulting?""
No one answered.
"Has anyone seen a contract from this company?""
Silence.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Because I paid the invoices, and I never received one.""
Daniel climbed onto the stage.
"Dad, please. We can discuss this later.""
I faced him.
"When would you like to discuss it? After I've paid another hundred thousand dollars?""
"That's not fair.""
"Then tell me where the money went.""
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
She squeezed his hand.
"Tell him," she whispered.
He swallowed.
"Vanessa handled the wedding finances. I didn't look at every invoice.""
I stared at my son.
"You didn't look?""
"I trusted her.""
"So did I.""
My voice was quieter now.
"That's why we're here.""
Elaine slowly approached the stage.
"Richard, maybe we should leave.""
I stepped down and took her hand.
"Not yet, sweetheart.""
She looked frightened.
I hated that.
For forty years, I had worked to make sure she never had to feel unsafe in a room full of strangers.
Now she was standing in a ballroom surrounded by people who had watched her be humiliated.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Do you remember your twenty-fifth birthday?""
He frowned.
"What?""
"You wanted to start your own investment company. You didn't have enough money, so your mother sold her grandmother's diamond bracelet to help you.""
Daniel looked down.
"I remember.""
"Do you remember what she said when I told her we should keep the money?""
He didn't answer.
"She said, 'Our son needs us. We can buy another bracelet.''"
Elaine squeezed my hand.
I continued.
"Your mother has never asked you for anything. Not a car. Not a vacation. Not even a birthday present that cost more than a dinner.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Here we go again.""
I turned toward her.
"She asked you for one thing today.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"What?""
"Respect.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Your wife shouldn't have touched my dress.""
Elaine lowered her eyes.
I felt her fingers tremble again.
I stepped between them.
"Do not speak to her like that.""
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
"Are you going to let him insult me?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Dad, enough.""
I looked at him for several seconds.
Then I asked a question I had been avoiding for months.
"Son, do you know what company Vanessa registered?""
He glanced at the document.
"V.C. Event Consulting.""
"Who owns it?""
"Vanessa, apparently.""
"Who is authorized to receive money from it?""
He hesitated.
"Vanessa.""
I nodded.
"And who has been paying the invoices?""
He looked at me.
I didn't need to answer.
His expression changed.
"Wait. Are you saying she took the money?""
"I'm saying that eighty-six thousand dollars was transferred to a company she owns, and I never approved those payments.""
Vanessa's face turned red.
"That money was for the wedding!""
"Then show me the contracts.""
"I don't have to show you anything!""
"Then you don't get another dollar.""
She turned toward Daniel.
"Tell your father he's being unreasonable.""
Daniel looked between us.
For the first time that afternoon, he seemed uncertain.
"Vanessa, did you actually receive the money?""
She stepped backward.
"Of course I did. I was organizing everything!""
"That's not what I asked.""
Her eyes flashed.
"You don't trust me?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Just answer.""
She slapped the document out of my hand.
Several pages scattered across the stage.
"Your father is trying to destroy our marriage!""
I watched the papers fall.
One landed near Daniel's shoes.
He picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
"What is this?""
Vanessa reached for it.
"Nothing.""
Daniel pulled it away.
It was a transfer authorization.
The payment was $24,000.
The account receiving it belonged to V.C. Event Consulting.
But the authorization carried a second signature.
Daniel's.
He stared at it.
"I didn't sign this.""
Vanessa went completely still.
Celeste set her champagne glass down.
I looked at my son.
"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""
Daniel turned toward his bride.
"Vanessa, why is my signature on this?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"You don't know?""
"Maybe you signed it when I gave you the other papers!""
Daniel examined the signature again.
"I never saw this document.""
Her voice rose.
"You're embarrassing me!""
He stepped back.
"Did you forge my signature?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
But there was no apology in them.
Only anger.
"How dare you accuse me on our wedding day?""
I watched Daniel carefully.
He was finally asking the right questions.
Then Celeste stepped onto the stage and made a mistake that would expose far more than the missing money.
"Vanessa, don't say anything else," she said sharply.
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Mom!""
Celeste grabbed her daughter's wrist.
"I told you the papers were supposed to be handled before the ceremony.""
The entire ballroom went silent.
Daniel slowly turned his head.
"What papers?""
Celeste realized what she had said.
Her face went pale.
I looked at the document in Daniel's hand.
Then at Celeste.
"What papers are you talking about?""
She didn't answer.
But Vanessa did.
May you like
And her next words made my stomach turn.
"Mom, you promised me Richard would never find out about the house.""
