Amused

Chapter 4: The Signature My Wife Never Made

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Daniel stood beneath the crystal chandelier, holding the marriage settlement agreement with both hands.

His eyes kept returning to the final page.

Then he looked at his mother.

"Mom, did you sign this?""

Elaine shook her head.

"No, darling. I've never seen that document before.""

Vanessa let out a frustrated breath.

"Of course she has. She's just pretending because your father is making everyone uncomfortable.""

I stepped forward.

"Be very careful, Vanessa.""

She pointed at the document.

"It's a standard agreement. Every sensible couple protects their financial future.""

Daniel turned another page.

"Then why does it say my mother's signature authorizes the transfer of her assets?""

"Because your parents agreed to help us!""

"My parents never agreed to this.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Daniel, stop acting like a child.""

He looked at her.

"What?""

"You heard me. You've been letting your father make every decision for you since the moment we started dating.""

I almost laughed.

For three years, I had watched this woman manipulate my son with carefully chosen words.

Whenever Daniel questioned her spending, she accused him of not loving her.

Whenever he wanted to visit us, she suddenly had an emergency.

Whenever I suggested he slow down financially, she reminded him that he was thirty-four years old and didn't need his father's permission.

I had recognized the pattern.

But I had kept my mouth shut because I wanted to believe Daniel could see it himself.

Now he was holding the evidence.

And Vanessa was still trying to turn him against the people whose signatures she had apparently used.

Daniel looked at the agreement again.

"Who prepared this?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"My attorney.""

"Which attorney?""

"Why does that matter?""

"Because I want to speak to him.""

"Not here!""

"Then give me his number.""

She looked toward Celeste.

Her mother stepped forward.

"Daniel, this is a terrible time to interrogate your bride. You have two hundred guests waiting to celebrate.""

Daniel didn't look at her.

"Did you know about this agreement?""

Celeste adjusted her necklace.

"I knew there were some financial arrangements being discussed.""

"What arrangements?""

"Your future.""

"My future?""

She nodded.

"Vanessa wanted security. She was marrying into a family with substantial assets. It was only reasonable to clarify everyone's expectations.""

I stepped closer.

"Clarify what?""

Celeste looked at me.

"Richard, you have a successful business. You own several properties. You have investments. Surely you understand that a young couple needs a financial foundation.""

"My son has a job.""

"Not one that provides the lifestyle Vanessa deserves.""

Elaine's fingers tightened around my arm.

I could feel her trembling.

I turned toward Celeste.

"You're talking about my son's lifestyle while standing in a ballroom I paid for.""

She looked away.

Daniel continued reading.

Then he stopped at a paragraph near the middle.

"Vanessa, what does this mean?""

She glanced at the page.

"Which part?""

"Section seven.""

He read it aloud.

"'Upon execution, the parties acknowledge that all family contributions, gifts, and transfers made before or during the marriage shall be considered joint marital resources unless otherwise documented.''"

He looked up.

"Why is that in here?""

Vanessa shrugged.

"It's legal language.""

"Then explain it.""

"It means what it says.""

Daniel turned toward me.

"Dad, what does this mean?""

I took the document from him.

I read the paragraph twice.

Then I looked at the signature page.

"Son, this agreement appears designed to make certain family assets and contributions part of your marital financial arrangement.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"That's exactly what marriage means!""

"No," I said.

"Marriage doesn't automatically give someone ownership of property that belongs to another person.""

Celeste made a dismissive noise.

"Let's not pretend we're in a courtroom.""

I placed the document on the stage.

"That's precisely where this may end up.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"You wouldn't dare.""

I looked at her.

"Try me.""

Daniel moved between us.

"Enough! Both of you!""

I stepped back.

My son was finally angry.

Unfortunately, he seemed more upset about the argument than about the agreement.

He turned toward Vanessa.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?""

She looked wounded.

"Because I knew you'd react exactly like this.""

"Like what?""

"Like your father. Suspicious. Controlling. Always assuming the worst.""

Daniel shook his head.

"There's a difference between protecting our future and putting my parents' house into a document they never signed.""

Vanessa's lower lip trembled.

Then she looked at Elaine.

"Maybe your mother should explain why she promised me the house.""

Elaine looked genuinely confused.

"I never promised you anything.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Really? Then why did you tell me I could use the Vermont property after the wedding?""

"I said you and Daniel were welcome to visit.""

"That's not what you said!""

I remembered the conversation.

It had taken place at our house six months earlier.

Vanessa had been sitting at our kitchen island, scrolling through photographs of the lake house.

She had asked whether we would ever consider renting it.

Elaine had smiled and said the couple could always visit.

There had been no discussion of ownership.

No promise.

No agreement.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You're changing the meaning of a casual invitation.""

She snapped her fingers.

"Because you never intended to give us anything!""

I stared at her.

"You're right. We never intended to give you our house.""

The guests began whispering again.

A man near the back stepped toward the stage.

He was the photographer's assistant.

"Mr. Bennett?""

I turned.

"Yes?""

He held up his phone.

"I'm sorry, but I think you should see something.""

He looked uncomfortable.

"I was recording the garden ceremony earlier. I wanted to capture some candid footage.""

He played the video.

The garden appeared on his screen.

Elaine stood beside Vanessa, gently lifting the long train of her wedding dress away from a wet patch of grass.

Vanessa turned.

Her lips moved.

The audio was faint but understandable.

"Don't touch me!""

Elaine stepped back.

"I'm sorry. I was only trying to help.""

Then Vanessa shoved her.

Both hands.

Directly into the flowerbed.

The video continued.

Vanessa looked down at Elaine and said:

"Maybe now you'll understand that nobody asked you to play mother of the bride.""

The assistant stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Play that again.""

The young man did.

This time, Daniel watched every second.

When the video ended, he looked at Vanessa.

"You told me she slipped.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"She was in my way.""

"You pushed her.""

"She grabbed my dress!""

"That isn't what happened.""

Vanessa raised her voice.

"Are you seriously going to take your mother's side?""

Daniel looked at her.

"She's my mother.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"And I'm your wife!""

He looked down at the agreement.

Then at the video.

Then at the woman standing in front of him.

For the first time, he seemed to realize that the wedding he had dreamed about might have been built on something entirely different.

Celeste grabbed Vanessa's arm.

"Come with me.""

Vanessa pulled away.

"I'm not going anywhere!""

"Vanessa.""

"No!""

She pointed toward Daniel.

"Tell them the truth! Tell them your father promised us the money!""

Daniel frowned.

"What money?""

Vanessa looked at him.

Then she made another mistake.

"The money from your inheritance!""

The ballroom became silent again.

I felt Elaine turn toward me.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"What inheritance?""

Vanessa looked as if she wished she could swallow her words.

I slowly folded my arms.

"Yes, Vanessa.""

May you like

I took a step toward her.

"Why don't you tell everyone what you know about my will?""
