Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Wedding

The police asked Marcus to come in the following morning.

They wanted to take a formal statement regarding the newly discovered photographs, the forged documents, and the suspected misuse of Lily's inheritance.

Evelyn accompanied him.

I stayed home with Lily.

For the first time since the birthday party, she seemed almost like herself.

She was drawing at the dining table, using a box of colored pencils Marcus had bought her.

I sat beside her.

"What are you drawing?""

"Our family.""

She showed me the paper.

There were four people.

Marcus.

Me.

Lily.

And Caleb.

I smiled.

"That's lovely.""

She added a small yellow sun above us.

Then she hesitated.

"Can I draw Mommy too?""

I swallowed.

"Of course.""

She drew another woman beside Marcus.

A woman with long brown hair and a blue dress.

Emily.

Lily had very few memories of her biological mother, but she remembered certain things.

The smell of her perfume.

The songs she sang.

The way she used to braid Lily's hair.

I touched the edge of the drawing.

"Your mommy would have loved this.""

Lily looked down.

"Do you think she knew Vanessa was bad?""

I took a breath.

"I think your mommy loved you very much. And I think she tried to protect you.""

"Then why did she leave?""

I put my pencil down.

"Sometimes terrible things happen that grown-ups cannot control.""

Lily studied my face.

"Did she know Daddy would come back?""

"Yes, sweetheart. She knew.""

Lily nodded.

Then she drew a small heart beside Emily.

I held her for a long moment.

At the police station, Marcus learned that Daniel had provided a detailed statement.

He admitted that Richard had been following Emily for several weeks before the accident.

The conflict began when Emily discovered unauthorized transfers from Lily's trust.

She confronted Richard and threatened to report him.

Richard insisted the money was being used temporarily to rescue Northstar Development from bankruptcy.

Emily refused to accept that explanation.

According to Daniel, Richard then began making threats.

He told Emily that Marcus's military service made him vulnerable in any custody dispute.

He also claimed that if Emily continued investigating, he would make sure Lily ended up with another family.

Daniel admitted he had helped Richard obtain copies of the trust documents and some of Marcus's old letters.

He said he believed the plan was to frighten Emily into withdrawing her complaint.

But on the night of the accident, everything changed.

Richard followed Emily onto the highway.

He deliberately drove close behind her.

Daniel followed in another vehicle.

At some point, Richard's car struck Emily's rear quarter panel.

Her vehicle lost control and hit the barrier.

Daniel stopped.

He said Emily was still alive when he approached.

She was conscious.

She asked him to call an ambulance.

But Richard ordered him to leave.

Daniel claimed Richard took Emily's handbag and removed a folder from it before emergency services arrived.

Then Richard told him to say he had arrived after the collision.

Daniel obeyed.

He had been paid to remain silent.

The payment had continued for years through a series of consulting contracts.

Marcus listened without interrupting.

When Daniel finished, he asked one question.

"Did my wife suffer?""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I don't know.""

"Was she conscious?""

"For a few minutes.""

Marcus looked away.

"Did she ask for me?""

Daniel began crying.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

Marcus stood.

Evelyn touched his arm.

"Marcus.""

He shook his head.

"I need a moment.""

He walked into the hallway.

For several minutes, he stood alone beside a vending machine.

When Evelyn found him, he was staring at the floor.

"She called me," he whispered.

"She called me, and I wasn't there.""

Evelyn stood beside him.

"You were serving your country. You had no reason to believe your family was in danger.""

"She asked for me.""

"I know.""

Marcus wiped his face.

"Did Richard hear her?""

"According to Daniel, yes.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Then he knew she was alive.""

Evelyn didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

The next development came from an unexpected source.

Denise.

She contacted Evelyn with a new piece of evidence.

A photograph of Vanessa and Richard at a restaurant.

The date was two months before Marcus's wedding.

On the back, someone had written:

*Our last meeting before everything becomes official.*

Evelyn examined the photograph.

There was a handwritten note beside it.

*M. Bennett — marriage — July.*

Marcus looked at it.

"She was already meeting him before we got married.""

"Yes," Evelyn replied.

He shook his head.

"Why would Richard arrange my marriage?""

Evelyn turned the photograph over.

There was another note.

*The wife must be trusted with the household. The husband must believe the arrangement is natural.*

I felt sick when Marcus showed me the picture later that evening.

"He didn't just approve of Vanessa," I said.

"He selected her.""

Marcus looked at the photograph.

"Like an employee.""

"Like someone who could get close to Lily.""

He sat down.

"She told me she met Richard through a charity event.""

"Maybe she did. But the photograph proves their relationship existed before that.""

Marcus studied the date.

Then he remembered something.

"Wait.""

He opened an old email account.

He searched for messages from Richard around the time of his wedding.

One appeared.

The subject line read:

*Congratulations, Brother.*

The message was short.

You finally have the family you deserve. Vanessa is exactly the kind of woman who can bring stability to your life.

Marcus read it again.

Then he opened the attachment.

It was a photograph of Vanessa standing outside the restaurant with Richard.

The same photograph Denise had sent.

But the original email contained something else.

A second attachment.

A scanned document.

It was a draft agreement dated before the wedding.

The agreement described Vanessa's proposed responsibilities within the Bennett household.

One paragraph outlined her authority to manage domestic finances.

Another discussed her role in coordinating Lily's education and medical arrangements.

A final paragraph stated:

*In the event of Marcus Bennett's prolonged absence, Vanessa Bennett will facilitate the transfer of Lily Bennett to the residence designated by Richard Bennett.*

I stared at the screen.

"She agreed to this before marrying him.""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"She married me because of Lily.""

I felt cold.

The woman who had stood beside him at the wedding.

The woman who had promised to love his daughter.

The woman who had kissed his forehead when he returned from deployment.

She had been working toward this plan before the marriage even began.

Then another email appeared.

It was from Vanessa.

The date was three days before the wedding.

Richard, I need to know one thing. What happens if Marcus discovers the truth about Emily?

Richard's reply was chilling.

He won't. By the time he starts asking questions, the evidence will already be gone.

Marcus scrolled down.

The final message was dated one week after the wedding.

The child is more difficult than expected. She keeps asking about her mother.

Richard replied:

Then make her stop asking. We cannot allow the past to interfere with the plan.

Marcus slammed the laptop shut.

I reached for his hand.

He was trembling.

"She knew Emily was dead because of Richard.""

"Yes.""

"And she still married me.""

He stood and walked toward the window.

"I brought her into my home. I let her sleep beside my daughter. I trusted her to protect Lily.""

I approached him.

"You didn't know.""

"I should have seen something.""

"Marcus, she was lying to you from the beginning.""

He turned.

"And what about you? You trusted her too.""

I lowered my eyes.

That was the part I couldn't escape.

I had defended Vanessa.

I had explained away Lily's fear.

I had told Marcus that their disagreements were normal.

I had wanted our family to work so badly that I had ignored the child who was telling me it wasn't safe.

Marcus came closer.

"This isn't your fault either.""

I nodded, but the guilt remained.

At 9:16 p.m., Evelyn called.

The police had obtained a warrant for Richard's office.

They had discovered financial records, forged documents, and correspondence linking him to the transfers from Lily's trust.

But Richard was gone.

His company had closed its doors that afternoon.

His house was empty.

His bank accounts had been drained.

And Vanessa had disappeared too.

Evelyn told us the authorities were looking for both of them.

Then she said something else.

"There's a witness who has come forward.""

"Who?"" Marcus asked.

"Someone who worked at Northstar Development.""

"What did they say?""

"They claim Richard paid a private investigator to obtain information about Emily's medical records and Lily's hospital admission.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Why?""

Evelyn paused.

"Because Richard believed Emily had discovered something about Lily's birth records.""

My heart stopped.

"What birth records?""

Evelyn continued.

"The investigator reportedly found a discrepancy between the original hospital file and the copy Richard had been using.""

Marcus gripped the phone.

"What discrepancy?""

"The original file lists Marcus Bennett as Lily's biological father.""

Marcus frowned.

"Of course it does.""

"But the copy submitted with the trust paperwork contains an additional page.""

"What page?""

"A genetic testing report.""

I stared at Marcus.

He looked as though he couldn't breathe.

Evelyn continued.

"According to the report, Marcus was allegedly not Lily's biological father.""

The room went silent.

Marcus shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

"I agree that we need to verify the document. The original hospital records are being requested.""

"Who was listed as the biological father?""

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she said:

"Richard Bennett.""

Marcus dropped the phone.

I stared at him.

Neither of us spoke.

The brother who had stolen Lily's inheritance.

The brother who had allegedly helped cause Emily's death.

The brother who had planned to take Lily away.

Now there was a document claiming he was her biological father.

Marcus slowly picked up the phone.

"That test is fake.""

Evelyn answered quietly.

"Perhaps. But Richard seems to have believed it was real.""

"Emily would have told me.""

"Then we need to find out what she knew.""

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

Lily was sleeping.

Our little girl.

The child he had raised, protected, and loved since the day she was born.

The child Richard had been trying to claim.

Then Evelyn delivered the final piece of information.

"Marcus, the laboratory listed on the report has confirmed that the test number is genuine.""

He went completely still.

"But," Evelyn continued, "the sample submitted for comparison was not collected from you.""

"Whose sample was it?""

"The laboratory is checking the original chain-of-custody records.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

And just before Evelyn ended the call, she said:

"There's one more thing. Emily requested a second DNA test six weeks before she died.""

"Why?""

"Because she already suspected someone had switched the original results.""

I looked at Marcus.

The entire room seemed to disappear around us.

Emily hadn't simply been fighting to protect Lily's inheritance.

She had been trying to uncover the truth about her daughter's identity.

And if Richard had been willing to forge signatures, steal money, and manipulate a custody case, what else had he falsified?

Marcus looked at me.

"Tomorrow, I want the original DNA results.""

But before we could make another call, a message appeared on his phone.

It was from Vanessa.

*You think you know who Lily's father is. Ask Emily what happened the night she brought her home from the hospital.*

May you like

A second message followed.

*And don't let Marcus tell Lily the truth until you know what Richard did.*
