Chapter 6: The Man in the Accident Report
Marcus didn't recognize the name at first.
When I told him what Patricia had said, he looked genuinely confused.
"Daniel Bennett?""
"Your father's brother.""
"I don't have an uncle named Daniel.""
I stared at him.
"Patricia says he was listed as a second driver in Emily's accident report.""
Marcus sat down.
"My father was an only child.""
"Are you sure?""
"Positive.""
He took out his phone and searched through old family photographs.
His father appeared in dozens of pictures.
Sometimes with Richard.
Sometimes with Marcus.
Sometimes with friends and military colleagues.
But never with anyone named Daniel.
I called Patricia back.
"Can you send us the footage?""
"I already uploaded it to a secure folder for Evelyn.""
"Thank you.""
"And Maya?""
"Yes?""
"Please don't tell Vanessa I spoke to you.""
I promised.
Marcus called Evelyn.
She arrived less than an hour later, accompanied by the investigator she had hired.
His name was Thomas Reed, a former detective with twenty-five years of experience investigating fraud and suspicious deaths.
Thomas was in his early sixties, with a calm voice and a habit of asking questions twice.
He watched Patricia's footage on Marcus's laptop.
The recording showed the front of our house at 10:47 p.m.
Vanessa appeared first.
She was wearing a dark coat and carrying a small black case.
She looked around before walking up our driveway.
Ten minutes later, a silver sedan stopped near the curb.
A man stepped out.
His face was partly hidden by the darkness, but he walked with a slight limp.
He approached Vanessa.
They spoke for less than a minute.
Then he handed her a large envelope.
She gave him the black case.
He left.
Vanessa went inside.
Thomas paused the footage.
"Do you recognize either person?""
Marcus nodded toward Vanessa.
"Obviously.""
"And the man?""
"No.""
Thomas enlarged the image.
The man's face became slightly clearer.
There was a scar near his left eyebrow.
Marcus leaned closer.
Then he went completely still.
"Wait.""
"What?"" I asked.
"I've seen him.""
"Where?""
Marcus searched through his phone and opened an old photograph.
It showed him standing beside Richard at a military charity event. A third man stood behind them.
Same scar.
Same limp.
Same face.
Marcus zoomed in.
"That's Daniel.""
Evelyn looked at him.
"You know him?""
"He used to work with Richard. I met him twice. Richard introduced him as a business associate.""
Thomas made a note.
"Do you know why he was connected to Emily's accident?""
"No.""
Thomas paused the recording.
"Then that's where we start.""
He asked Evelyn to obtain the original accident report and any supplementary statements.
He also requested a copy of the vehicle records, insurance correspondence, and available photographs from the investigation.
Marcus looked at him.
"Do you think my brother was involved?""
Thomas didn't answer immediately.
"I think your brother has been connected to several suspicious events involving your daughter and her inheritance. I think this man may be connected to the same network. But we need evidence before assigning responsibility.""
Marcus looked back at the screen.
"That night, Vanessa handed him something.""
"Yes.""
"And he gave her something.""
"Correct.""
"What was in the case?""
Thomas shook his head.
"We don't know.""
I studied the footage.
There was something strange about Vanessa's behavior.
She didn't look frightened.
She looked impatient.
As though she had been waiting for someone who was late.
"Can you tell whether she knew the camera was there?"" I asked.
Thomas replayed the clip.
"She looks toward it once.""
"Then why didn't she avoid it?""
"Maybe she didn't notice it. Or maybe she wanted the footage to disappear later.""
I remembered Patricia saying Vanessa had asked her to delete the recording.
Thomas nodded.
"That suggests she knew the camera might have captured something.""
Marcus stood.
"What's the next step?""
"We establish who Daniel Bennett is and what his connection to the accident was. We also need to protect Lily from any further contact with Vanessa or Richard.""
Marcus agreed immediately.
But there was one person we hadn't considered.
Caleb.
Vanessa's son.
He was only six.
And although he had never been unkind to Lily, he had been caught in the middle of his mother's behavior.
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
"Caleb is still with Vanessa.""
I understood what he meant.
"Do you think he's safe?""
"I don't know.""
He called Evelyn.
She explained that Caleb's welfare was a separate legal matter involving his own parent and that we should not interfere without a legitimate safety concern.
But she agreed to document our concerns and ensure that any relevant authorities were informed if evidence suggested either child was at risk.
That evening, something unexpected happened.
The doorbell rang.
Marcus checked the security monitor.
Vanessa stood on the porch.
She was holding Caleb's hand.
I looked at Marcus.
"Don't let her inside.""
He opened the door only as far as the security chain allowed.
"What do you want?""
Vanessa looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied back, and her makeup had faded beneath her eyes.
"I need to speak to you.""
"No.""
"Marcus, please. Caleb misses Lily.""
Behind her, Caleb held a small stuffed dinosaur.
He looked directly at me.
"Can I see Lily?""
My heart tightened.
Marcus glanced at Evelyn, who had advised us to keep communication documented.
"Not tonight," he said.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You're punishing an innocent child.""
"No. I'm protecting mine.""
Her expression hardened.
"You've changed.""
"Yes.""
"You used to trust me.""
"I used to trust Richard, too.""
She looked down.
Then she leaned toward him.
"You don't understand what you're doing. If you keep pushing, you'll lose more than money.""
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Is that a threat?""
Vanessa glanced at Caleb.
"No. It's a warning.""
She turned to leave.
But Caleb suddenly pulled away from her hand.
"Mommy?""
"What?""
He looked at Marcus.
"Are you going to tell Daddy about the garage?""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Marcus opened the door another inch.
"What garage?""
Caleb looked confused.
"The one where Uncle Richard keeps the boxes.""
Vanessa grabbed his shoulder.
"Caleb, stop talking.""
The boy flinched.
I stepped forward.
"Vanessa, don't grab him like that.""
She immediately released him.
Marcus looked at Caleb.
"What boxes, buddy?""
Vanessa interrupted.
"He doesn't know what he's talking about. He's tired.""
But Caleb shook his head.
"No, Mommy. You said the papers were in the garage. You said Uncle Richard would burn them after the birthday.""
Vanessa went pale.
Marcus stared at her.
"What papers?""
She pulled Caleb toward the driveway.
"We're leaving.""
"Vanessa!""
She stopped.
Marcus looked directly at her.
"Why were you planning to burn documents after Lily's birthday?""
For the first time, Vanessa didn't have an answer.
She hurried toward her car.
Caleb turned around before she put him inside.
He held up the stuffed dinosaur.
"Lily has the other one," he said.
I frowned.
"What other one?""
"The blue dinosaur. Mommy put it in the garage with the papers.""
Then Vanessa closed the car door.
They drove away.
Marcus turned to Evelyn.
"Call Thomas.""
But Thomas was already making a phone call.
He had received an email from the records department.
The original accident report had been located.
And there was something in it that nobody had told Marcus.
The second driver was not Daniel Bennett.
It was Richard Bennett.
The report stated that Richard had been driving the vehicle behind Emily's car on the night of the accident.
He had given a witness statement.
He claimed he had arrived moments after the collision.
But Thomas pointed to one line near the bottom.
*Secondary vehicle damage consistent with possible contact during the incident.*
Marcus stared at the page.
"Richard hit her car?""
Thomas shook his head.
"We don't know that yet.""
"But he was there.""
"Yes.""
"And he lied about arriving afterward.""
Thomas looked at him.
"According to this report, he was present before emergency services arrived.""
Marcus gripped the paper.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Thomas turned another page.
"Because the investigating officer closed the matter after receiving a statement from a second witness.""
"Who?""
Thomas placed the page on the table.
The name was typed clearly.
*Daniel Bennett.*
Marcus looked at the photograph from Patricia's security camera.
Then at the accident report.
Then at the document bearing his forged signature.
Suddenly, the pieces seemed connected.
Richard had witnessed the guardianship document.
Richard had controlled Lily's inheritance.
Richard had been present when Emily died.
And Daniel had helped support the original accident investigation.
But the final line in the report was the one that made my blood run cold.
Under the section marked Additional Evidence, someone had handwritten:
*Victim's handbag recovered with contents missing. Financial documents believed to be among the missing items.*
Marcus looked at me.
"Emily was carrying the original trust papers that night.""
Evelyn slowly nodded.
"That could explain why someone wanted them.""
Then Thomas's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds before turning toward us.
"There's been a development.""
"What?""
"The storage garage Caleb mentioned belongs to Northstar Development Group.""
Marcus stood.
"Then let's go there.""
Thomas shook his head.
"We can't enter without proper authorization. But we've identified the property manager.""
"Who is it?""
Thomas checked the message.
Then he looked up.
"Vanessa Bennett.""
I felt the room tilt.
Thomas continued.
"She's been paying rent on that garage for three years.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Three years?""
"Yes.""
"Since before she married me?""
Thomas nodded.
"And the property records show something else.""
He placed a printed page on the table.
The garage had been purchased through a company registered under Richard's name.
But the original owner had been someone else.
Someone whose name appeared on Emily's death certificate as the person who had notified the family.
I read it once.
Then again.
*Daniel Bennett.*
And beneath his name was an address.
The same address listed on the temporary residential arrangement for Lily.
Richard hadn't simply prepared another home for my daughter.
May you like
He had been hiding something there since before Vanessa entered our family.
And Caleb had just told us that the evidence was waiting in the garage.
