Chapter 5: The Woman Who Had Been Watching Us
Evelyn wanted us to go to the police immediately.
Marcus wanted to drive straight to Richard's house.
I wanted to know why an anonymous person knew we had listened to Emily's voicemail.
In the end, Evelyn got her way.
She contacted the police and arranged for an officer to document the threatening message and take possession of a forensic copy of the old phone.
But the anonymous warning changed everything.
Someone was watching our investigation.
And that meant Richard might not be the only person involved.
That evening, Marcus installed additional security cameras around the house. I checked every window and locked the back door twice.
Lily watched us from the staircase.
"Are we moving?""
I turned.
"No, sweetheart. Why would you think that?""
"Because Vanessa said we might have to leave.""
Marcus stopped adjusting the camera.
"Nobody is making us leave.""
"But Uncle Richard has a big house.""
Marcus walked toward her.
"Listen to me. Your home is wherever you feel safe with people who love you. And this is your home.""
Lily nodded, but she didn't look convinced.
I went upstairs with her.
While helping her change into pajamas, I noticed a small bruise on her upper arm.
It was faint, almost hidden beneath the sleeve.
"Sweetheart, what happened here?""
She looked down.
"Nothing.""
I sat beside her.
"You can tell me.""
"Vanessa grabbed me when I spilled juice.""
"When?""
"Last week.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did it hurt?""
Lily nodded.
"She said I was clumsy and that Daddy wouldn't believe me because he wasn't here.""
I closed my eyes briefly.
"Did she do that often?""
Lily was quiet.
Then she whispered, "Sometimes she squeezed my arm when I asked about Mommy.""
I felt something inside me break.
I had seen Lily flinch around Vanessa.
I had heard the excuses.
I had accepted the explanations.
And while I was busy trying to become a good stepmother, a little girl had been learning how to hide her pain.
I took her hand.
"You never have to keep something like that secret again.""
She looked at me.
"Will Daddy be mad?""
"Your daddy will be sad that you were hurt. But he will never be mad at you for telling the truth.""
I photographed the bruise for Evelyn and wrote down Lily's words as accurately as I could remember them.
I didn't interrogate her.
She had already been asked to carry too many secrets.
When I returned downstairs, Marcus was standing in the kitchen holding his phone.
"We have a problem.""
I looked at him.
"What happened?""
"Richard filed an emergency motion.""
My heart dropped.
"What?""
Evelyn called immediately.
She explained that a petition had been submitted requesting an urgent review of Lily's living arrangements.
The filing claimed Marcus's military obligations made him unavailable and alleged that Lily had been exposed to emotional instability in our household.
It also described me as an unsuitable caregiver because I was not Lily's biological mother.
I read the document over Marcus's shoulder.
There was a paragraph describing Lily's supposed behavioral problems.
It claimed she had become increasingly withdrawn, had difficulty following instructions, and showed signs of emotional distress.
Every sentence sounded familiar.
Not because it was true.
Because it sounded like Vanessa.
She had been documenting Lily's ordinary childhood behavior as evidence of neglect.
A spilled drink.
A missed homework assignment.
A tearful morning.
All turned into accusations.
"Who submitted this?"" Marcus asked.
Evelyn checked the filing.
"Richard's attorney.""
Marcus slammed his hand against the counter.
"He's using the courts to take my daughter.""
"He's requesting a hearing," Evelyn corrected.
"That doesn't mean he'll succeed.""
"How can they even consider this?""
"Because the petition includes a supporting declaration from someone claiming to have firsthand knowledge of the household.""
I felt cold.
"Who?""
Evelyn hesitated.
"Your neighbor, Patricia Wells.""
I stared at her.
Patricia lived three houses away. She had watched Lily after school twice when I was stuck in traffic. She brought cookies at Christmas and always asked Marcus about his deployments.
She had even attended the birthday party.
"She's lying," I said.
"Maybe," Evelyn replied.
"But we need to know what she actually submitted.""
Marcus called Patricia.
She didn't answer.
I sent a message.
*Patricia, we need to speak with you about the court filing.*
A few minutes later, she replied.
*I'm sorry, Maya. I was only trying to help Lily.*
I read it aloud.
Marcus shook his head.
"Help her how?""
Before I could respond, another message arrived.
*Vanessa told me Lily was being neglected and that you and Marcus were considering sending her away. She said the court needed to know.*
My hands went numb.
"She told Patricia we were sending Lily away?""
"Apparently.""
I typed another message.
*Did you actually see anything yourself?*
Patricia replied almost immediately.
*I heard Lily crying outside one evening. Vanessa told me she was having a difficult adjustment. I didn't know what else to believe.*
Marcus took the phone.
"Ask her whether she saw Vanessa hurt Lily.""
I typed the question.
No answer.
Then another message appeared.
*Maya, please don't make this worse. Vanessa said you would try to turn everyone against her.*
I put the phone down.
That was when I realized how carefully Vanessa had prepared the story.
She hadn't simply mistreated Lily.
She had built a circle of people who would explain away the evidence.
She had told some people Lily was difficult.
Others that Marcus was absent.
Others that I was jealous of her relationship with the children.
And now she had a witness willing to support her claims.
At 8:20 p.m., Evelyn arrived with a copy of the emergency filing.
She placed it on the table.
"There is something else you need to know.""
Marcus looked up.
"The court has scheduled a preliminary hearing.""
"When?""
"Friday morning.""
"That's three days away.""
"Yes.""
I looked at the declaration.
"Can we challenge it?""
"We can. But we need evidence showing that the allegations are false and that the proposed arrangement is not in Lily's best interests.""
Marcus took a deep breath.
"Then we'll give you everything.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Start with school records, medical records, communication logs, and anything documenting Vanessa's treatment of Lily.""
I remembered something.
"Wait. The school counselor.""
"What about her?"" Evelyn asked.
"Three months ago, she called me. She said Lily had been unusually quiet and had stopped participating in class.""
Marcus looked at me.
"Why didn't I know?""
"Vanessa intercepted the call. She told the counselor she'd handle it.""
Evelyn immediately wrote that down.
"What's the counselor's name?""
"Mrs. Harper.""
"Good. I'll contact her through the proper channels.""
After Evelyn left, Marcus went upstairs to check on Lily.
I stayed in the living room, looking at the family photographs.
One showed Vanessa and me standing beside each other at Christmas.
We were smiling.
Another showed Lily and Caleb holding hands.
I wondered how many times I'd mistaken forced politeness for affection.
My phone rang.
Patricia.
I answered cautiously.
"Maya?""
Her voice was shaky.
"I need to tell you something.""
"What?""
"I didn't write that declaration.""
I stood up.
"What do you mean?""
"Vanessa brought it to my house. She said it was just a statement confirming that Lily sometimes cried and that Marcus was away a lot. She asked me to sign it.""
"Did you read it?""
"Not all of it. I was in a hurry. She said it was for a family support assessment.""
"Then why did you tell the court that Marcus was neglecting Lily?""
"I didn't know she had added that.""
I closed my eyes.
"Patricia, you need to tell Evelyn exactly what happened.""
"I will. But there's something else.""
"What?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"Vanessa came to my house the night before the birthday party.""
"Why?""
"She asked whether I still had the security footage from my front porch.""
I frowned.
"What footage?""
"My camera caught something last month. Vanessa was standing outside your house late at night, carrying a small black case.""
My stomach tightened.
"What was in it?""
"I don't know. But she asked me to delete the footage.""
"Did you?""
"No.""
I gripped the phone.
"Patricia, can you send it to us?""
"I can. But Maya...""
"Yes?""
"I recognized the man who arrived ten minutes later.""
"Who?""
Patricia went silent.
Then she whispered:
"Your husband's father.""
I nearly dropped the phone.
Marcus's father had been dead for six years.
"That's impossible," I said.
"I know what I saw, Maya.""
"Are you sure?""
"Yes. It wasn't your father-in-law. It was his brother.""
Marcus had never mentioned having another uncle.
I looked toward the staircase.
"What's his name?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Daniel Bennett.""
The name meant nothing to me.
May you like
Until she added:
"He's the man who was listed as the second driver in Emily's accident report.""
