Chapter 2: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
At 6:12 the following morning, someone began pounding on our front door.
Marcus was already awake.
He had spent most of the night sitting beside Lily's bed, occasionally checking that she was breathing peacefully beneath her pink blanket.
I found him in the kitchen, staring at the sealed envelope.
"Don't answer it," I whispered.
The pounding came again.
"Marcus! Open the door!""
Richard.
Of course.
Marcus walked toward the entrance, but I caught his arm.
"Please don't let him turn this into another argument.""
"He can explain himself.""
"Not while Lily is sleeping upstairs.""
He looked at me for a moment, then nodded.
He opened the door but kept the security chain attached.
Richard stood on the porch wearing a navy cashmere coat, holding two coffees. His hair was perfectly combed, and his expensive watch caught the morning sunlight.
He looked like a man arriving for a pleasant breakfast.
Not someone whose signature had appeared on a document potentially threatening his niece's home.
"Morning, little brother," Richard said.
Marcus didn't return the greeting.
"What agreement?""
Richard's expression barely changed.
"Can we talk inside?""
"No.""
Richard glanced at me.
"Maya, perhaps you can explain to him that this is a family matter.""
I stepped beside Marcus.
"Our daughter is involved. That makes it our matter.""
Richard sighed.
"Vanessa called me last night. She said things got out of hand.""
"Things?"" Marcus repeated.
"You signed a document claiming I authorized changes to my daughter's guardianship.""
Richard took a slow sip of coffee.
"I witnessed a document. I didn't prepare it.""
"Did you know my signature was on it?""
"Marcus, you sign things all the time.""
"Answer the question.""
Richard looked toward the street.
"You're being emotional. That's understandable. You've just returned from deployment, and you've always been protective of Lily.""
Marcus opened the door another inch.
"Did you know?""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"I knew Vanessa wanted some stability for the children.""
"What stability?""
"She's been raising Lily practically alone while you're away.""
"She's been living in my house, using my money, and making decisions about my daughter without my permission.""
Richard shook his head.
"That's exactly the problem. You think being a father means paying the bills and coming home occasionally to play hero.""
The words landed hard.
Marcus stared at him.
"You know what I sacrificed to keep this family together.""
"And you know what Vanessa sacrificed? She gave up a career to take care of your household.""
I stepped forward.
"She has a career, Richard. She manages the property company you helped her establish.""
Richard looked at me sharply.
For a second, something passed between them.
Then he smiled.
"Good morning, Maya.""
"Don't change the subject. What agreement did you make with Vanessa?""
He lowered his coffee.
"None that concerns you.""
Marcus removed the security chain.
"Get off my property.""
Richard didn't move.
"Before you make a mistake, think carefully. You have a daughter who needs stability. You have a wife who has been trying to build a family. And you have a brother who has spent years cleaning up your messes.""
Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.
"My wife died, Richard. I didn't create that mess.""
Richard's expression flickered.
For a moment, he looked almost guilty.
Then he stepped backward.
"Call me when you're ready to have an adult conversation.""
He walked to his black SUV and drove away.
Marcus shut the door.
I turned toward him.
"Did you notice how he said Vanessa was raising Lily practically alone?""
"Yes.""
"He sounded like he had rehearsed it.""
Marcus looked at the envelope.
"Because he probably had.""
An hour later, our attorney, Evelyn Carter, arrived.
She had represented Marcus during the estate proceedings after Lily's mother died. She was in her late fifties, with silver-framed glasses and the habit of listening without interrupting.
She placed the document beneath a desk lamp.
"Where did you get this?""
"From my daughter," Marcus replied.
Evelyn examined the first page.
"Marcus, this is more serious than a forged signature.""
"Explain.""
She turned the page.
"Someone has represented that you consented to a review of your daughter's living arrangements. This paragraph also references an existing concern about your fitness as a primary caregiver.""
I leaned forward.
"Can they take Lily away with this?""
"Not simply because someone filed a document. But if someone has been gathering evidence, making allegations, or attempting to establish a pattern, we need to understand the full picture.""
Marcus's hands tightened.
"What pattern?""
Evelyn looked at us.
"Have there been any reports to child services? School complaints? Medical records? Anything suggesting Lily is being neglected or that her father is unavailable?""
I remembered the school counselor calling me three months earlier.
She had asked whether Lily was adjusting well after Marcus's deployment.
Vanessa had answered the phone before I could.
She'd told the counselor Lily was having emotional difficulties and that she was handling everything.
I had thought it was harmless.
Now I wasn't so sure.
"Vanessa spoke to Lily's school," I said.
"When?""
"Several times. I don't know exactly how many.""
Evelyn wrote something down.
"Get me the school records. Every email, every meeting note, every communication.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"And Richard?""
Evelyn studied the witness signature.
"Do you have reason to believe he was involved beyond witnessing this?""
"He texted me that Vanessa was following their agreement.""
Evelyn extended her hand.
"Show me.""
Marcus handed her his phone.
She read the message, then looked up.
"Don't respond. Preserve everything. Screenshots aren't enough by themselves, so keep the original messages and don't delete anything.""
I felt a chill.
"Could Richard have been helping her build a case against Marcus?""
"Possibly. But I don't want to jump ahead.""
She returned to the document.
"There is another problem.""
"What?"" Marcus asked.
"The law office listed here.""
She pointed to the letterhead.
"Westbridge Legal.""
Marcus frowned.
"Richard's company uses them.""
"Does your brother have any ownership interest in Westbridge?""
"I don't know.""
Evelyn looked at him.
"Then we need to find out.""
At that moment, a small voice came from the hallway.
"Daddy?""
Lily stood there in her pajamas, clutching a stuffed rabbit.
Marcus immediately rose.
"Hey, sweetheart. Why are you awake?""
"I heard Uncle Richard.""
"He's gone now.""
Lily looked at the document on the table.
"Is he mad because I showed you?""
Marcus crouched.
"No. Nobody is mad at you.""
"He told Vanessa not to let me talk to you about the blue room.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Evelyn.
"What blue room?""
Lily swallowed.
"The room at Uncle Richard's house.""
Marcus's face changed.
"What about it?""
"Vanessa said I would go there if Daddy couldn't take care of me anymore.""
Marcus gently held her shoulders.
"Did Uncle Richard tell you that?""
Lily nodded.
"One time, when you were gone. He came to the house with Vanessa. They said I would have my own bedroom there. They said it was a special place for children who needed help.""
I felt sick.
"Did they take you there?""
"No. But Vanessa made me pack my clothes.""
Marcus's voice cracked.
"When?""
"Before Christmas.""
I remembered that week.
Vanessa had told me Lily was helping organize her old clothes for donation. I'd even praised her for being responsible.
I had no idea my daughter had been packing a suitcase because she thought she was being sent away.
"Where's the suitcase?"" Marcus asked.
"Upstairs. In the closet.""
He stood, his expression hardening.
Evelyn closed her notebook.
"Don't touch anything in that room until we've documented it.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because if someone has been preparing to move your daughter without your knowledge, we need to know exactly what they planned.""
Lily reached for his hand.
"Am I going to the blue room now?""
Marcus knelt again.
"No, baby. You're staying with us.""
"But Vanessa said you signed the paper.""
"I didn't.""
"She said Uncle Richard saw you do it.""
Marcus went very still.
"Sweetheart, did you ever see Daddy's signature on another paper?""
Lily nodded slowly.
"She had lots of them.""
"What do you mean?""
"She practiced.""
My stomach dropped.
Lily pointed toward the document.
"She used to sit at the dining table with your old letters. She wrote your name over and over.""
Evelyn immediately took out her phone.
"Marcus, do you still have the original letters you sent from overseas?""
"Some of them.""
"Where?""
"At the house. In my office.""
Lily looked down at her rabbit.
"Vanessa said she needed to make it look real.""
No one spoke.
May you like
Then Lily added something that made Evelyn stop writing.
"Uncle Richard told her the judge would believe it if she used the same handwriting as the letters.""
