Chapter 3: The Room They Had Prepared for My Daughter
The suitcase was exactly where Lily said it would be.
It sat behind Vanessa's winter coats in the upstairs closet, its pink handle barely visible beneath a pile of folded blankets.
Marcus stood in the doorway while Evelyn photographed everything.
I recognized the suitcase immediately.
I'd bought it for Lily two years earlier, before her first school trip. It had little white stars on the sides and a missing zipper pull that I'd promised to replace.
Now it was packed.
Three pairs of jeans. Two sweaters. Underwear.
Socks. Her favorite stuffed rabbit's spare blanket.
And a small framed photograph of Marcus and Lily at the beach.
I picked it up.
The picture had been taken during one of Marcus's rare weeks at home. Lily was sitting on his shoulders, laughing so hard that her eyes were closed.
Someone had wrapped the frame in a towel.
It wasn't a forgotten suitcase.
Someone had prepared it carefully.
Evelyn photographed the contents before asking Lily whether she wanted to stay downstairs.
Lily nodded.
Marcus walked her to the kitchen, where I made pancakes and let her choose chocolate chips for breakfast.
When he returned, Evelyn was holding a small envelope.
"Look at this.""
She had found it tucked inside the suitcase's side pocket.
The envelope contained a printed document headed:
*TEMPORARY RESIDENTIAL ARRANGEMENT — CHILD PLACEMENT PLAN*
Under the heading were three names.
Lily Bennett.
Richard Bennett.
Vanessa Bennett.
I read it twice.
"Richard was going to take her?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"Not necessarily permanently. But this document suggests someone was preparing an alternative residence.""
Marcus took the page.
"There's no court stamp.""
"Correct. It appears to be a private draft.""
"Why would my brother need a draft?""
"That's what we're going to establish.""
She turned the page.
There was a handwritten note at the bottom.
*Mother's estate account to remain untouched until transfer is finalized.*
I stared at the words.
"Mother's estate?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Lily inherited money from her mother.""
I knew that.
Lily's biological mother, Emily, had left a modest inheritance when she died. Marcus had explained that it was placed in a protected trust for Lily's education and future needs.
He had never discussed the details because he wanted Lily to have a normal childhood.
"How much?"" I asked.
"At the time, about $640,000," Marcus replied.
My mouth went dry.
Evelyn looked up.
"Who manages the trust?""
"Richard was the trustee initially. Emily named him because she trusted him. After her death, I handled the paperwork with him.""
"Did you ever change the arrangement?""
Marcus frowned.
"I thought I had.""
"What do you mean?""
"About a year after Emily died, Richard told me he had arranged for an independent financial manager to handle the account. He said I needed to focus on Lily and my deployment.""
Evelyn leaned back.
"Do you remember signing the transfer documents?""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"I remember signing a stack of papers at Richard's office. He said they were administrative changes.""
"Did you read them?""
"I read the first few pages.""
"Did you receive copies?""
"I don't remember.""
Evelyn placed the residential arrangement beside the guardianship document.
"Marcus, I think we need to look at the trust immediately.""
I felt the room tilt.
"Are you saying Vanessa was trying to get custody because of Lily's money?""
"I'm saying we have two suspicious documents, a possible forged signature, a prepared residence, and a reference to an inheritance account. We need records before drawing conclusions.""
Marcus walked to the window.
Outside, a delivery truck stopped across the street.
He stared at it without seeing it.
"Richard was there when Emily died," he said.
His voice sounded distant.
"He held Lily at the funeral because I couldn't stop shaking. He told me he would protect her. He promised me.""
I approached him.
"People can betray promises.""
"Not him.""
"Marcus...""
He turned.
"He's my brother, Maya.""
I didn't answer.
Because I knew what he meant.
A stranger could steal money. A stranger could forge a signature. A stranger could even lie about a child.
But betrayal by the person who had stood beside you at your wife's funeral was something else entirely.
Evelyn gathered the documents.
"I'll contact the bank and request the trust records. I'll also have the signature examined by a forensic document specialist.""
Marcus nodded.
"Do whatever you need.""
Before Evelyn left, she gave us one instruction.
"Don't confront Vanessa or Richard again until we understand the financial records. And don't allow either of them unsupervised access to Lily.""
Marcus walked her to the door.
I remained in the kitchen with Lily.
She was cutting pancakes into tiny squares.
"Is Daddy sad?"" she asked.
I looked at her.
"Why do you think that?""
"Because he keeps looking at Uncle Richard's picture.""
I followed her gaze.
A framed family photograph sat on the bookshelf. Marcus and Richard stood on either side of their father, both wearing military uniforms.
"Your daddy is trying to understand something difficult," I said.
Lily placed another piece of pancake on her plate.
"Did I make it difficult?""
I put down my coffee.
"No, sweetheart. You told the truth. Sometimes the truth makes things difficult for people who have been hiding something.""
She thought about that.
Then she whispered, "I don't want Vanessa to come back.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"She won't be alone with you again.""
For the first time that morning, Lily smiled.
But it didn't last.
At 11:40, Marcus received a call from the school.
He put it on speaker.
"Mr. Bennett?"" a woman's voice asked.
"This is Caroline from the elementary school's administration office.""
"Yes.""
"We received a request yesterday to release Lily's student records to an authorized representative.""
Marcus frowned.
"Who requested them?""
"Mrs. Vanessa Bennett.""
"She's not Lily's legal guardian.""
There was a pause.
"She identified herself as your spouse and provided a signed authorization.""
Marcus looked at me.
"What authorization?""
Caroline continued.
"The document included your signature. It also requested that Lily's emergency contacts and pickup arrangements be changed.""
My fingers tightened around the edge of the counter.
"Who was listed as the new emergency contact?"" I asked.
The woman hesitated.
"Mr. Richard Bennett.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Did you approve the change?""
"No, sir. We contacted you because the signature didn't match the one in our records.""
"Thank you for calling. Please preserve everything.""
After he hung up, he looked at me.
"She was changing the school records.""
"And putting Richard down as the person who could collect Lily.""
He nodded.
"She was making sure he could take her.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I almost ignored it, but a message appeared before I could put it down.
*MAYA, THIS IS DENISE. I KNOW YOU'RE ANGRY, BUT YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO ME.*
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa's sister.
The woman who had quietly warned me about the original records at the birthday party.
Another message appeared.
*RICHARD HAS BEEN LYING TO MARCUS FOR YEARS.*
Then a third.
*I HAVE THE ORIGINAL EMAILS BETWEEN HIM AND VANESSA.*
I looked at Marcus.
"Denise says she has emails.""
He immediately reached for his phone.
"Tell her to send them to Evelyn.""
I began typing.
Before I could finish, Denise called.
I answered and put her on speaker.
"Maya," she whispered.
"Where are you?""
"At my apartment. I don't think Vanessa knows I'm talking to you.""
"Why do you have emails between them?""
"Because I helped Vanessa print some documents last month. I thought they were for a financial review. Then I saw Richard's messages.""
Marcus leaned toward the phone.
"What did he say?""
Denise took a shaky breath.
"He told Vanessa that once the guardianship arrangement was approved, she would have access to Lily's trust.""
Marcus's face went white.
"Why would she need access to my daughter's trust?""
"Because Richard said the money was supposed to pay off his business debts.""
Silence filled the kitchen.
Then Denise said something even worse.
"He also said Marcus would never fight it because he would believe his own brother.""
Marcus gripped the counter.
"Send the emails to our attorney.""
"I will. But there's something else.""
"What?""
"Vanessa didn't start this plan last month. Richard has been preparing it since before she married Marcus.""
I felt cold.
"What are you saying?""
Denise's voice dropped.
"Before Vanessa moved into your house, Richard gave her a copy of Emily's trust agreement. He told her exactly what kind of woman Marcus would marry.""
Marcus looked up sharply.
"Why would he do that?""
Denise hesitated.
"Because he wanted Vanessa to become part of the family.""
"That doesn't make sense.""
"It does if you know what Richard told her.""
A notification appeared on my phone.
An email attachment.
Denise had sent it.
The subject line read:
*PROJECT FAMILY — PHASE TWO*
Marcus opened it.
There were several messages, dated months before his wedding to Vanessa.
The first was from Richard.
*Once you're married, he'll trust you with everything. The girl is the only obstacle. We need to make sure the money stays accessible.*
Vanessa's reply was short.
*What if he refuses to give me control?*
Richard answered:
*He won't. I'll make sure of it.*
Marcus scrolled down.
His breathing became shallow.
There was another message, dated three weeks before the wedding.
*Don't worry about Emily's old paperwork. I've already handled the difficult part.*
Marcus stopped scrolling.
He looked at me.
"What difficult part?""
Before I could answer, Denise spoke again.
"Maya, there's one more thing you need to know about Emily's death.""
Marcus froze.
"What about my first wife?""
Denise began crying.
May you like
"Richard told Vanessa that Emily's accident wasn't as accidental as everyone believed.""
And then the call abruptly disconnected.
