Amused

Chapter 8: The Night Lily Nearly Died

Marcus didn't sleep that night.

Neither did I.

He sat at the kitchen table with Lily's old medical records spread in front of him, reading every page as though one of them might suddenly explain what had happened.

I sat beside him.

"She was four," he whispered.

"How could I not know?""

"You were overseas. Emily handled the hospital visit.""

"Richard told me Lily had a fever. He said she was fine.""

"Maybe Emily didn't want to frighten you.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Then why would Richard authorize treatment?""

We needed answers.

At eight the following morning, Evelyn arranged a meeting with Lily's former pediatrician, Dr. Samuel Foster.

He had treated Lily since birth.

When we arrived, he recognized Marcus immediately.

"Marcus. I heard about what happened with your brother.""

Marcus looked surprised.

"How?""

"Your attorney contacted me. She said there might be questions about an old hospital admission.""

Dr. Foster invited us into his office.

He reviewed the date on the medical authorization form.

Then he stopped.

"That's not right.""

"What do you mean?"" Marcus asked.

"This authorization was signed by someone who claimed to be Lily's legal guardian.""

"Richard.""

Dr. Foster nodded.

"But I remember that night differently.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Tell me.""

The doctor opened an old medical file.

"Emily brought Lily in around midnight. She was frightened. Lily had a high fever, but she was also unusually drowsy. We suspected a reaction to medication.""

"What medication?""

The doctor checked the notes.

"An adult-strength sedative had been administered before arrival.""

My blood ran cold.

Marcus stared at him.

"Who gave it to her?""

"Emily said she didn't know. She found Lily sleeping unusually deeply and couldn't wake her properly.""

"Why didn't you report it?""

"We did. There was a preliminary safeguarding review, but the matter was closed after the family provided an explanation.""

"What explanation?""

The doctor hesitated.

"Richard said he had accidentally given Lily the wrong medication.""

Marcus stood.

"He gave my four-year-old daughter an adult sedative?""

"According to the report, he believed it was children's medicine.""

"How could he make that mistake?""

Dr. Foster lowered his eyes.

"I don't know.""

Marcus paced toward the window.

"Was she in danger?""

"Yes. Her breathing had slowed significantly. She required monitoring overnight.""

I reached for Marcus's arm.

He looked as though someone had struck him.

"Did Emily know?""

"She was furious. She refused to leave Lily's bedside.""

"Did she file a complaint?""

"She asked about legal action. But two days later, she withdrew her request.""

"Why?""

The doctor looked at us.

"She said someone had threatened to report her as an unstable mother if she pursued the matter.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Richard.""

"I can't say who made the threat. I can only tell you what was documented.""

Evelyn wrote everything down.

"Doctor, do you still have the original safeguarding notes?""

"Some of them. They may be archived.""

"We need copies.""

"I'll cooperate with any lawful request.""

Marcus turned back.

"Did Emily ever tell you she was afraid of Richard?""

Dr. Foster hesitated.

Then he nodded.

"She asked me whether a relative could legally become a child's guardian if both parents were considered unsuitable.""

My heart sank.

"She was already worried about losing Lily.""

"Yes.""

The doctor looked at Marcus.

"I remember telling her that she should speak with an attorney. She said she had already tried.""

"Who?""

"She didn't tell me.""

On the drive home, Marcus barely spoke.

Finally, he said, "Richard gave my daughter something that nearly killed her.""

"We don't know whether it was deliberate.""

"He threatened Emily. He controlled the trust. He forged my signature.""

"I know.""

"And now we find out Emily was afraid someone would take Lily.""

I took his hand.

"Let the investigation establish what happened.""

He nodded.

But I knew the damage was already done.

The man Marcus had trusted as a brother had become the center of every terrible discovery.

When we arrived home, Lily was sitting on the front steps with Caleb.

I stopped.

Marcus immediately got out of the car.

"Caleb?""

The boy looked up.

"Hi, Uncle Marcus.""

Lily stood.

"He came by himself.""

Marcus looked around.

"Where's your mother?""

Caleb pointed toward the road.

"She told me to wait here.""

My heart dropped.

"How long have you been waiting?""

"Since breakfast.""

Marcus crouched.

"Did your mother say why?""

Caleb shook his head.

"She said you would know what to do.""

Marcus looked toward the street.

There was no sign of Vanessa.

We brought Caleb inside and called Evelyn.

She advised us to contact the appropriate child welfare authorities immediately rather than attempt to resolve the situation ourselves.

A social worker arrived within the hour.

Caleb sat beside Lily, holding his stuffed dinosaur.

He seemed more confused than frightened.

"Is Mommy coming back?"" he asked.

The social worker spoke gently.

"We're going to make sure you're safe, sweetheart. We'll contact your mother and work out what happens next.""

Caleb nodded.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Can I tell you something?""

"Of course.""

"Mommy said Uncle Richard was going to take Lily away.""

Marcus exchanged a glance with me.

"When did she say that?""

"Last night.""

"What else did she say?""

Caleb looked down.

"She said if Lily went away, we could have the big house and the swimming pool.""

I felt sick.

"Did she say anything about money?""

Caleb nodded.

"She said Lily had a special bank account and that we could all go on vacation when Uncle Richard fixed it.""

Marcus didn't respond.

The social worker gently redirected Caleb toward the living room.

After she left with him, I found Marcus standing at the kitchen window.

"He's only six," he whispered.

"I know.""

"He thinks taking Lily away means getting a swimming pool.""

I placed my hand on his back.

"He's repeating what the adults told him.""

Marcus turned.

"Vanessa used both children.""

I nodded.

"She used Lily to get the money. And she used Caleb to make it look like a family decision.""

At 2:30 p.m., Evelyn called.

The forensic document examiner had completed an initial review of the guardianship document.

The signature was not Marcus's.

It had been copied from an older letter.

But the examiner had found something else.

The witness signature belonged to Richard, and the handwriting on the handwritten amendments matched a sample from Vanessa's business records.

That was significant.

It meant the document hadn't merely been signed incorrectly.

It had been deliberately assembled using materials from multiple sources.

Evelyn then told us the bank had found another transaction.

A transfer of $275,000 from Lily's trust had been authorized three days before the birthday party.

The destination account belonged to a company registered in another state.

The company had one director.

Vanessa Bennett.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"She was going to take the money and disappear.""

"Possibly," Evelyn replied.

"The timing is suspicious, but we're still tracing the transaction.""

"Can the bank stop it?""

"They've placed a temporary hold on the remaining assets while the investigation proceeds.""

Marcus exhaled.

For the first time in days, he seemed able to breathe.

Then Evelyn continued.

"There's one more development. The police found Daniel.""

"Where?""

"At a motel outside the city. He has agreed to provide a formal statement.""

"Is he cooperating?""

"Yes. But he has asked for protection.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Can we speak to him?""

"Not yet. The investigators need to take his statement first.""

An hour later, Thomas called.

He had reviewed the original accident photographs.

One image showed Richard's car parked behind Emily's vehicle.

Another showed a damaged headlight.

A third showed something on the road near the driver's side door.

Thomas enlarged it.

There was a small metal object.

A key ring.

The same key ring visible in a photograph taken inside Richard's office three years later.

Thomas compared the images.

"Marcus, your brother's car was not simply passing by that night. The photographs place him at the scene before emergency services arrived.""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"Then Daniel was telling the truth.""

"At least about Richard being present.""

Thomas continued.

"There's also evidence that Emily's handbag was removed before the police documented the scene.""

"By whom?""

"That's what we're investigating.""

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Then he noticed something.

"Wait. Zoom in on the passenger window.""

Thomas enlarged the image.

A reflection appeared in the glass.

A person standing near the rear of the vehicle.

A woman.

Marcus leaned closer.

"That's Vanessa.""

Thomas examined the image.

"Are you certain?""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"She had that coat. She wore it to my father's memorial.""

I felt the room go cold.

Vanessa had been at the accident scene.

Three weeks before Marcus met her.

Four years before she became his wife.

Thomas looked at the image again.

"That changes the timeline.""

Marcus swallowed.

"How?""

Thomas turned the monitor toward us.

"Your brother may have introduced Vanessa to you years later, but she was already connected to the people involved in Emily's death.""

I looked at the photograph.

The woman standing beside Richard's car was unmistakable.

Vanessa.

Then Marcus noticed another detail.

On the passenger seat of Richard's car sat a small object.

A child's pink backpack.

Lily's old backpack.

The one Emily had taken to the hospital the night Lily nearly died.

Marcus whispered:

"Why did Richard have Lily's backpack at the accident scene?""

May you like

Nobody answered.

Because the implications were worse than anything we'd imagined.
