Amused

Chapter 9: The Secret Behind the Loan

I read Vanessa's message several times.

You don't want the truth about Michael coming out.

I didn't respond.

Instead, I took screenshots, saved the messages, and forwarded them to my personal email.

Then I called Michael.

He answered on the first ring.

"Mom?""

"Did you receive Vanessa's latest message?""

"Yes.""

"What does she mean by the truth about you?""

He went quiet.

"Michael?""

"I don't know.""

"Are you sure?""

He exhaled.

"Mom, there are things I haven't told you.""

I closed my eyes.

I had heard that sentence too many times over the previous few days.

"All right. Tell me.""

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, "Last year, my company went through a difficult period.""

I sat down.

"How difficult?""

"One of our commercial projects fell apart. We had investors backing out, and I was responsible for some of the financing.""

"Did you lose money?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

He swallowed.

"About forty-five thousand dollars.""

I stared at the wall.

"Michael, why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought I could recover it.""

"Did you borrow money?""

"Yes. I took out a personal loan and used some credit cards.""

I waited.

"Was Vanessa involved?""

"She knew about the business problems. But I didn't tell her the full amount at first.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Then why is she threatening to tell me something?""

He took a breath.

"Because she found out I had used some of our joint savings to cover the business losses.""

I was quiet.

"How much?""

"About twelve thousand dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

"Michael.""

"I know.""

"That money belonged to both of you.""

"I know, Mom.""

"Why didn't you discuss it with her?""

He sounded ashamed.

"Because I thought I'd replace it before she noticed.""

I looked down at my hands.

For the first time, I understood why Michael had been so desperate to keep the peace.

He wasn't simply afraid of upsetting his wife.

He was afraid that the truth would expose his own dishonesty.

"Michael, did Vanessa know you had financial problems when she accepted the vacation?""

"Yes.""

"Did she know you couldn't afford it?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did she tell everyone you had saved for months?""

He sighed.

"She said she didn't want people knowing we were struggling.""

I shook my head.

"Michael, you cannot build a marriage on pretending everything is fine.""

"I know.""

"And you cannot expect me to keep paying for things while both of you hide the truth.""

"I know, Mom.""

There was a long silence.

Then he said, "I think we both made mistakes.""

I appreciated that he finally included himself.

But I also needed him to understand the difference between making a mistake and deliberately using someone else's identity.

"Michael, your financial decisions are yours to address. Vanessa's financial decisions are hers. But neither of you has the right to attach my name to a debt I never agreed to.""

"I understand.""

"Good. Then we need to deal with that first.""

He agreed to meet me in the hotel lobby.

When I arrived, he was sitting near the entrance with a laptop open in front of him.

He looked up.

"I found something.""

He turned the screen toward me.

It was the account summary from Westbridge Financial Services.

The original loan had been issued to Vanessa six months earlier.

The principal was $27,000.

There were several payment entries.

The guarantor information listed my name, address, and personal details.

I looked at the document.

"Did you download this from the company?""

"No. I requested access through the account portal using the email address listed on the statement.""

"How did you get the password?""

"Vanessa had saved it on our shared laptop.""

I scrolled through the records.

There were several payments made from Vanessa's personal account.

Then I noticed something.

The guarantor agreement was dated June 14.

That was the same week I had visited Michael and Vanessa for dinner.

I remembered that evening.

Vanessa had asked me to bring my identification because she wanted to arrange a surprise wine-tasting experience for my birthday.

She said the booking company needed information for a private event.

I had handed her my driver's license.

I hadn't thought anything of it.

Now I felt sick.

"Michael, I gave her a copy of my driver's license that week.""

He looked at me.

"Why?""

"She said she needed it for a birthday booking.""

His expression changed.

"Mom...""

"I know.""

He looked at the document again.

"Do you think she used it?""

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

A woman from the resort accounting department had given me her business card the previous day. I called her and asked whether she could provide the contact information for the appropriate legal or fraud department.

She directed me to the relevant management office.

I then contacted my bank and explained that my personal information appeared to have been used without my authorization.

The representative placed additional security measures on my account and advised me to review any recent activity.

I followed the instructions.

No unauthorized charges appeared on my credit card.

But the loan document was another matter.

I asked Michael to forward me every available page.

Then I called a local attorney whose number I had saved from a previous consulting project.

His name was David Harris.

He agreed to speak with me by video call that afternoon.

At 2:00, Michael and I sat together in my hotel room while David reviewed the documents.

He listened carefully.

He didn't interrupt.

When we finished explaining, he leaned toward his camera.

"Mrs. Bennett, the most important thing right now is to preserve the original documents and avoid signing anything further.""

"I haven't signed anything.""

"Good. Do you recognize the signature on the guarantor agreement?""

"No.""

"Did you authorize anyone to act on your behalf?""

"No.""

He nodded.

"Then you should formally dispute the document with the lender and request a complete copy of the loan file. You should also make a report through the appropriate authorities if your identity was used without permission.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Could my wife be in legal trouble?""

David paused.

"That depends on the evidence and the circumstances. I can't determine that from a few documents. But a person cannot simply use another adult's identity or signature because they're married.""

I looked at Michael.

He stared at the table.

David continued.

"Also, I recommend that you and your wife separate your financial records immediately and consult independent financial advisers. Do not move joint funds without legal advice.""

Michael nodded.

We thanked him and ended the call.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then Michael said, "I never thought it would get this bad.""

I looked at him.

"Neither did I.""

He rubbed his face.

"Mom, I need to tell you something else.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What now?""

"Vanessa didn't just use the joint account to pay Westbridge.""

I waited.

"She also transferred money from my business account.""

"How much?""

"Eight thousand seven hundred dollars.""

I stared at him.

"Was she authorized to access that account?""

"She had the password because she helped me with invoices sometimes. But I never approved those transfers.""

I looked at him carefully.

"Did you report them?""

"Not yet.""

"Then you need to speak with your bank and your accountant.""

He nodded.

I could see how overwhelmed he was.

I wanted to comfort him.

But I also knew that rescuing him from every consequence would only delay the moment he learned to stand on his own.

At 3:15, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Carol, we need to talk.""

Her voice sounded controlled, almost pleasant.

"About what?""

"About this ridiculous situation.""

I looked at Michael.

He shook his head slightly.

I put the call on speaker.

"Go ahead.""

Vanessa sighed.

"I understand you've been speaking with lawyers.""

"I've been asking for advice about a document carrying my name.""

"You know I never meant for this to happen.""

I remained silent.

She continued.

"The lender needed a guarantor. I thought it would be temporary.""

I felt my heart beating faster.

"Did you sign my name?""

"I thought you would agree.""

"Did you sign my name, Vanessa?""

A pause.

"Yes.""

Michael closed his eyes.

I continued.

"Did you submit my personal information?""

"Yes.""

"Did you tell the lender I had agreed to guarantee the loan?""

She became defensive.

"I needed the money.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

"I had every intention of paying it back.""

I looked at the documents.

"How much of the loan have you repaid?""

Silence.

"Vanessa?""

"I don't know exactly.""

I almost laughed.

"You borrowed twenty-seven thousand dollars, used my information as a guarantor, and don't know how much you've repaid?""

"I've been under a lot of pressure!""

"Why?""

"Because Michael's business problems created financial problems for us!""

Michael suddenly leaned toward the phone.

"Don't blame me for the money you transferred without telling me.""

Vanessa went quiet.

Then she said, "So now you're both against me?""

Michael answered.

"No. We're asking you to tell the truth.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Fine. You want the truth? The loan wasn't just for shopping.""

I looked at Michael.

He stared at the phone.

"What was it for?"" he asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said, "I invested in a business opportunity. I thought it would make enough money to clear our debts.""

"What business opportunity?""

"Someone I knew introduced me to a private investment group.""

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa, who?""

Her voice dropped.

"His name is Grant.""

Michael frowned.

"Grant who?""

"I don't know his last name.""

I looked at Michael.

"How do you not know the last name of someone you gave twenty-seven thousand dollars?""

Vanessa snapped.

"Because I was stupid, okay? Is that what you want to hear?""

I felt sorry for her for exactly one second.

Then I remembered the forged signatures.

The lies.

The attempt to make me responsible for her debt.

"Vanessa, where is the money now?""

"I don't know.""

Michael sat upright.

"What do you mean you don't know?""

"The investment disappeared.""

"Disappeared?""

"Grant stopped answering my calls.""

Michael stared at the phone.

"So you lost twenty-seven thousand dollars?""

Vanessa began crying.

"I was trying to help us!""

Michael's voice softened slightly.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I knew you'd blame me.""

I looked at my son.

He had no answer.

Then Vanessa said something that changed the entire conversation.

"I didn't have a choice. The payments were due, and the lender was threatening to take action. That's why I used your mother's information.""

I leaned forward.

"You had a choice. You could have told me the truth.""

Vanessa started crying harder.

"I was going to pay it back.""

"With what?""

She didn't answer.

Michael stood.

"Vanessa, we need to stop talking over the phone. I'm coming upstairs.""

"Don't bring your mother.""

"I'm coming alone.""

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

"Do you want me to come with you?""

He shook his head.

"No. I need to talk to my wife.""

I nodded.

He walked toward the door.

But just before he left, his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

Then he stopped.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He turned the phone toward me.

It was a message from Lauren.

Michael, I'm sorry to send this, but I think you need to know. Vanessa told me something yesterday that she didn't want you to find out.

I read the next line.

She said the $27,000 loan wasn't the only money she borrowed.

I looked up.

Michael was already reading the rest.

His face went completely white.

The message continued:

She also borrowed $40,000 from someone else. And she told him your mother had guaranteed that loan too.

For several seconds, the room was completely silent.

Then Michael whispered:

"Forty thousand?""

I felt my knees weaken.

Another loan.

Another guarantee.

Another document carrying my name.

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to make the resort charges disappear.

She wasn't simply trying to protect her anniversary.

She was running out of places to hide.

Michael looked at me.

"Mom, I think there's something we need to find before she does.""

"What?""

He swallowed.

"Whatever document she used to guarantee that second loan.""

Then he opened another message from Lauren.

It contained a photograph of a folder.

On its cover were three words.

*CAROL BENNETT — FINANCIAL GUARANTEE.*

And beneath those words was the date.

The document had been created only eleven days before our flight to Cabo.
