Chapter 8: The Money Michael Never Knew About

Michael stared at the photograph for nearly a minute.
The bank transfer showed a payment of $18,500 made six weeks earlier.
The recipient was listed as a company called Westbridge Financial Services.
There was no explanation.
No invoice number.
No description of what the money was for.
Just a transfer confirmation.
"Who sent this?"" I asked.
Michael shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"Does Vanessa have an account with this company?""
"I've never heard of it.""
He zoomed in on the photograph.
At the bottom was a reference number and a date.
"That's her account," he whispered.
"How can you tell?""
"The last four digits. It's the account she uses for personal spending.""
I looked at him.
"Do you have access to that account?""
"No. We have separate accounts, but our household expenses come from a joint checking account.""
"Then where did the money come from?""
He didn't answer.
He opened his banking application and checked the joint account.
A few moments later, his face changed.
"What is it?""
He turned the screen toward me.
There was a transfer from their joint checking account to Vanessa's personal account.
$18,500.
The date matched the receipt.
Michael sat down heavily.
"She told me she was paying off her credit cards.""
I said nothing.
He checked the transaction history again.
There were three smaller transfers during the previous two months.
$3,000.
$2,500.
$4,000.
All to the same personal account.
"Michael," I said quietly, "you need to find out what this money was used for.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
He immediately called his wife.
She answered after several rings.
"What?""
"Vanessa, we need to talk.""
"I'm busy.""
"What's Westbridge Financial Services?""
Silence.
Then she said, "Why are you looking through my accounts?""
"That's not an answer.""
"It's a financial company.""
"What did you pay them $18,500 for?""
"I don't have to explain every transaction to you.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"That money came from our joint account.""
"And?""
"And you told me it was going toward our credit cards.""
Vanessa's voice became defensive.
"I was handling our finances.""
"By transferring money to a company I've never heard of?""
"Michael, I am not discussing this with you while you're standing with your mother.""
He looked at me.
"Then meet me downstairs. We can talk privately.""
"I'm not coming down.""
"Vanessa.""
"What?""
"Did you use our joint money to pay someone else?""
She hung up.
Michael stared at the phone.
I didn't speak.
He stood and began pacing.
"How could she do this?""
I understood his anger.
But I also knew that anger alone wouldn't solve anything.
"Michael, do you have access to your account statements?""
"Yes.""
"Download them. Save everything.""
He nodded.
"Then speak with your bank directly. Don't make assumptions, and don't confront anyone based on one photograph.""
He looked at me.
"Why are you being so calm?""
I thought about it.
"Because I've learned that when people behave dishonestly, the truth usually comes out more clearly when you stop giving them opportunities to change their story.""
He sat down again.
For the next twenty minutes, we reviewed the account transactions.
There were several payments to luxury retailers.
A furniture store.
Two jewelry boutiques.
And one transaction to an online payment service.
Michael's expression grew darker with every entry.
Then he found something else.
A payment of $6,200 to a company called Westbridge.
The date was four months earlier.
"That's before the vacation," he said.
I leaned closer.
"Could it be a loan?""
"I don't know.""
He called the bank.
After completing their identity verification process, he requested information about the transfers.
The representative explained that the bank could confirm the transactions but couldn't disclose details about the recipient company without additional documentation.
Michael requested copies of the statements and opened a formal inquiry into the transfers.
When he ended the call, he looked exhausted.
"I don't recognize half these payments.""
I placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Then you need to understand them before making any decisions.""
He nodded.
His phone buzzed.
Vanessa again.
If you are going to accuse me of something, at least have the courage to do it without your mother.
Michael typed a response.
Come downstairs. We need to talk.
She replied almost immediately.
I'm packing.
Michael looked up.
"She's leaving.""
I took a breath.
"Where is she going?""
"I don't know.""
He called her again.
This time she answered.
"Michael, I told you I'm packing.""
"Where are you going?""
"Home.""
"You're leaving the vacation?""
"Yes. Since apparently nothing I do is good enough for you.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Vanessa, we need to discuss the money.""
"Not here.""
"Then when?""
"When you're ready to stop treating me like a criminal.""
Michael went quiet.
Then he said, "I saw the signature on Mom's authorization form.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Oh, for God's sake. Are we still talking about that?""
"Yes.""
"I was trying to help.""
"You copied her signature.""
"I used the information you both gave me.""
"Mom never authorized it.""
"Then maybe she should have been more cooperative.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Vanessa, that's not how this works.""
She hung up.
He stood motionless.
Then he said something I never expected.
"Mom, I think I need to go home.""
I nodded.
"Do you want me to come with you?""
"No. I think I need to handle this myself.""
I understood.
He had spent years allowing other people to make decisions for him.
It was time he made one of his own.
"All right.""
He gave me a hug.
"Thank you.""
"You're welcome, sweetheart.""
He walked toward the elevators.
I returned to my room.
For the next hour, I sat by the balcony door, thinking about the strange turn this vacation had taken.
I had wanted to give my son and daughter-in-law a beautiful anniversary.
Instead, I had discovered that my generosity had become a cover for a series of lies.
I was still trying to understand how someone could accept so much kindness and respond with so little respect when my phone rang.
It was Daniel.
"Carol, I think you need to speak with Lauren.""
"Why?""
"She received another message from Vanessa.""
"What did it say?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Vanessa is asking Lauren to lend her $10,000.""
I sat upright.
"Ten thousand?""
"Yes. She says Michael is threatening to freeze their joint account and she needs money to protect herself.""
I frowned.
"Did Lauren agree?""
"No. She wants to understand what's happening first.""
I closed my eyes.
"Daniel, I don't want Lauren dragged into this.""
"Neither do I.""
He paused.
"There's something else. Lauren recognized the name Westbridge.""
I leaned forward.
"How?""
"She says Vanessa mentioned the company several months ago. Apparently, Vanessa had invested money in something she called a private opportunity.""
My stomach tightened.
"An investment?""
"That's what Lauren remembers.""
"Did she know how much?""
"No. But she remembers Vanessa saying the returns would be excellent.""
I thanked Daniel.
Then I called Michael.
He answered immediately.
"Mom?""
"Daniel says Lauren recognized the company name.""
Michael went quiet.
"What did she say?""
"She remembers Vanessa talking about a private investment.""
I heard him exhale.
"An investment?""
"That's what she told Lauren.""
He didn't speak for several seconds.
Then he said, "Mom, I think I know what this is.""
"What?""
"About six months ago, Vanessa told me one of her friends had introduced her to an investment opportunity. She said it was a short-term business fund.""
"Did you invest?""
"No. I told her I wasn't interested.""
"Did she?""
"I don't know.""
I waited.
Then he said, "She told me she was putting in some of her own savings.""
I looked at the bank statement.
"Michael, how much money did she say?""
"Maybe two thousand dollars.""
I felt a knot forming in my stomach.
"Then why is there an $18,500 transfer?""
"I don't know.""
He paused.
"Mom, I'm going to check something.""
"All right.""
He ended the call.
Twenty minutes later, he called back.
His voice was barely recognizable.
"I found it.""
"What?""
"The Westbridge account.""
"And?""
He took a breath.
"Mom, it's not an investment fund.""
I sat down.
"What is it?""
"A debt collection company.""
I stared at the phone.
"Are you sure?""
"I found their website. They're listed as a financial recovery service.""
"Then why would Vanessa send them money?""
"I don't know.""
He paused.
Then he said something that made my heart sink.
"Mom, I think Vanessa has been trying to pay off a private loan.""
I looked toward the ocean.
"How much?""
Michael swallowed.
"According to the account summary, the original balance was $27,000.""
I closed my eyes.
Twenty-seven thousand dollars.
On top of the thirty-eight thousand in credit cards and personal loans.
"Michael, when did she borrow that money?""
"I don't know.""
His voice cracked.
"But there's a note in the account.""
"What note?""
He read it aloud.
"Payment arrangement. Final deadline October thirty-first.""
I looked at the calendar on my phone.
Tomorrow.
The deadline was tomorrow.
Then Michael continued.
"Mom, there's another name listed on the account.""
"Whose?""
He went silent.
Finally, he whispered:
"Your name.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"That's impossible.""
"I know.""
"What does it say?""
He read the entry again.
"Guarantor: Carol Bennett.""
I gripped the phone.
"I never guaranteed anyone's loan.""
"I know, Mom.""
"Michael, listen to me carefully. I never signed anything for Vanessa. I never agreed to be responsible for her debts.""
"I believe you.""
He sounded frightened.
Then he added:
"There's a document attached to the account. It looks like a copy of your driver's license.""
I stood up.
"Where did she get that?""
"I don't know.""
I looked at the folder containing the resort documents.
First, the copied signature.
Now, a loan account carrying my name.
This was no longer an argument about a vacation.
Someone had apparently been using my identity to support financial arrangements I had never approved.
I asked Michael to send me the document.
A few seconds later, an email arrived.
I opened the attachment.
The document listed my full name, my home address, and a signature beneath a guarantor agreement.
It was dated six months earlier.
And this time, the signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
Because whoever had copied it had made one mistake.
They had used the signature from an old document that contained my maiden name.
I had stopped using that signature decades ago.
I looked at the screen.
Then I called Michael.
"Your wife has been using documents from my past.""
He was silent.
"Mom, what do we do?""
I took a deep breath.
"We stop treating this like a family disagreement.""
I looked at the deadline.
October 31.
Tomorrow.
"We get professional help, and we find out who has been using my identity.""
But before I could make another call, a message appeared from Vanessa.
I know what you're doing. If you take this any further, I'll tell everyone what your son did to get that vacation money.
I stared at the words.
Then another message arrived.
You don't want the truth about Michael coming out.
May you like
For the first time, I wondered whether Vanessa had been hiding something about my son too.
And whether the woman I had spent three months trying to please had been holding a secret that could destroy our entire family.
