Amused

Chapter 7: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds, Michael didn't move.

He stared at the document on my laptop as if he couldn't understand what he was seeing.

Then he leaned closer.

"That's your signature?""

I nodded.

"Someone has copied it.""

He scrolled down.

The document contained my full name, my home address, the last four digits of my credit card, and a statement authorizing Vanessa Bennett to make payment arrangements on my behalf.

At the bottom was a signature that looked remarkably similar to mine.

But there was one detail she had overlooked.

My husband had taught me to sign my name with a small flourish beneath the final letter of Bennett. I had done it that way for nearly forty years.

The signature on the document didn't have it.

"Mom," Michael whispered.

"What is this?""

"I was hoping you could tell me.""

He shook his head.

"I've never seen this before.""

I picked up my phone and called the resort.

Elena answered.

"Good morning, Mrs. Bennett. How may I assist you?""

"This is Carol Bennett. I've just received a document claiming that I authorized Vanessa Bennett to manage my payment arrangements.""

There was a pause.

"Yes, ma'am. Our accounting department forwarded that request for verification.""

"I did not sign that document. I did not authorize Vanessa to use my financial information, and I did not give her permission to make changes to my reservations.""

"I understand. I'm very sorry for the confusion.""

"Please place a hold on all requests made in my name until I can review them.""

"Certainly. I'll notify our accounting manager immediately.""

"And I would like a copy of every document submitted.""

"Of course.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

Michael was still staring at the screen.

"Vanessa wouldn't do something like this," he said.

I looked at him.

"Then why is her name on the request?""

He opened his mouth but didn't answer.

"Michael, I don't want to accuse anyone without evidence. But the resort has a document claiming I authorized something I never authorized.""

He rubbed his face.

"Maybe she thought she was allowed to handle it because you paid for everything.""

"Being generous does not mean giving someone permission to sign my name.""

"I know.""

I sat down.

"Do you?""

He looked at me, and for the first time since arriving in Cabo, he didn't seem interested in defending his wife.

He seemed scared.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

"Hey.""

"Where are you?""

"In Mom's room.""

"Why?""

"We're looking at something from the resort.""

A pause.

Then Vanessa said, "What something?""

Michael glanced at me.

"The authorization form.""

Silence.

"What about it?""

"Why did you send them a document saying Mom authorized you to manage her payments?""

Vanessa's voice immediately sharpened.

"Oh, my God. Is this what your mother is telling you now?""

"Vanessa, I'm looking at the document.""

"Because the resort was being difficult! Someone needed to sort it out.""

"Did Mom sign it?""

"She gave me permission to handle the vacation.""

"That's not what I'm asking.""

Vanessa sighed loudly.

"Michael, I am not doing this over the phone.""

"Did you sign her name?""

Another silence.

Then she said, "I used the signature from the original booking paperwork. It's basically the same thing.""

Michael stood abruptly.

"What?""

"I had the information. I was trying to keep our reservation from being canceled.""

"That's not your signature to use!""

"Don't raise your voice at me.""

He lowered the phone.

"Vanessa, you cannot sign someone else's name.""

"Well, somebody had to fix the situation because your mother decided to sabotage everything.""

I watched my son.

He looked toward me, then away.

"Vanessa, don't contact the resort about Mom's account again.""

She laughed.

"Are you serious?""

"Yes.""

"Fine. Enjoy your little meeting with your mother.""

She hung up.

Michael lowered his phone.

I sat quietly.

Finally, he said, "I'm sorry.""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

"Mom, I honestly didn't know she had done that.""

"I believe you.""

He looked relieved.

Then I added, "But I need you to understand something. You don't have to know about every mistake your wife makes to be responsible for how you respond when you discover it.""

He swallowed.

"I understand.""

A knock came at the door.

It was Elena, accompanied by a man wearing a dark suit.

"Mrs. Bennett, this is Mr. Alvarez, our accounting manager.""

The man introduced himself and asked whether he could come inside.

I invited them to sit.

Mr. Alvarez opened a folder.

"First, I want to apologize. We received a request to reinstate the original payment method and authorize Mrs. Vanessa Bennett to manage the account. Because the request involved a different cardholder, our team requested verification.""

"Was the request approved?""

"No, ma'am. We did not process it.""

I felt my shoulders relax slightly.

"Good.""

He continued.

"We also reviewed the original booking documents. Your original payment remains valid for the accommodation already purchased. However, the incidental expenses are separate.""

"Understood.""

"We have placed a security note on your account. No one other than you can authorize changes to your payment arrangements.""

"Thank you.""

He handed me several printed pages.

I examined them.

The copied signature was attached to an email address belonging to Vanessa.

There was also a handwritten note requesting that all future incidental expenses be transferred to my room.

I looked at Mr. Alvarez.

"Did Vanessa personally submit this?""

"She emailed it to our accounting department yesterday evening.""

"Thank you for confirming.""

He nodded.

"If you would like, we can also provide a written record of the attempted authorization.""

"Yes, please.""

He prepared the document and handed it to me.

I placed everything in a folder.

After they left, Michael sat down again.

"Mom, I think I need to talk to Vanessa.""

"I think you do.""

He looked exhausted.

"She's going to say I betrayed her.""

I studied him.

"Michael, telling someone they cannot use another person's signature isn't betrayal.""

He nodded.

Then he stood.

"I'm going to handle this.""

I watched him walk toward the door.

"Michael?""

He turned.

"Don't handle it just to make the argument go away. Handle it because you know what is right.""

He gave a small nod.

"I will.""

He left.

I spent the next hour on my balcony, reviewing the documents.

At 11:45, Daniel called.

"Carol, have you seen Lauren's latest message?""

"No. What happened?""

"Vanessa told Lauren that Michael's mother was threatening to report her to the authorities.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's not what I've said.""

"I know. Lauren is confused because Vanessa is telling two different stories.""

"What stories?""

Daniel hesitated.

"She's saying you originally gave her permission to use the card, then changed your mind after an argument. She claims the signature was only an attempt to restore an authorization you had already approved.""

I looked at the folder beside me.

"That's not true.""

"I know. I saw the document.""

I took a breath.

"Daniel, I don't want this becoming a public fight.""

"Then don't let it become one. Keep your records. Let the resort document what happened.""

He was right.

I thanked him.

A few minutes later, another call came through.

This time, it was Michael.

"Mom, can you meet me downstairs?""

"What's wrong?""

"I need you to hear something.""

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not frightened.

Almost defeated.

I agreed to meet him in the lobby.

When I arrived, he was standing near the windows overlooking the garden.

He held his phone in one hand.

"Where's Vanessa?"" I asked.

"Upstairs.""

"What happened?""

He looked at me.

"I asked her about the signature.""

"And?""

"She admitted she copied it.""

I nodded.

"What did she say?""

"That she was trying to save the vacation. That she thought you'd eventually agree.""

I felt a chill move through me.

"Did she apologize?""

He shook his head.

"She said you were making her life miserable.""

I looked toward the ocean.

Michael continued.

"Then I asked her about the five thousand dollars she wanted from Lauren.""

His voice broke slightly.

"She told me it wasn't any of my business.""

I turned toward him.

"You're married. Your finances are connected. It is your business.""

"I know.""

He stared at the phone.

"Mom, I think there's something else going on.""

"What?""

He swallowed.

"Vanessa has been receiving calls from a number she won't answer when I'm around.""

I frowned.

"Who is calling?""

"I don't know. But last night, I saw a message on her phone.""

"What did it say?""

He looked at me.

"It said, 'You promised the money would be there before the end of the month.''"

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did you ask her about it?""

"Yes. She said it was a work matter.""

He paused.

"Mom, I don't think she's telling me the truth about our finances.""

Before I could respond, his phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

A message from Vanessa.

Come upstairs. We need to talk. And don't bring your mother.

Michael stared at it.

Then he looked at me.

"I think our marriage has a much bigger problem than this vacation.""

I reached for his hand.

"Then it's time you stopped pretending otherwise.""

He nodded.

And just as he turned toward the elevators, another message arrived.

This one was from an unfamiliar number.

It contained a photograph.

A bank transfer receipt.

The sender's name was Vanessa.

The recipient's name was someone neither of us recognized.

And the amount was $18,500.
