Amused

Chapter 4: The Dinner That Wasn't Mine to Pay For

"Tell your mother she needs to come downstairs. Right now!""

Vanessa's voice was so loud that I could hear it clearly through Michael's phone.

I stood on my balcony, watching the last sunlight disappear behind the Pacific Ocean.

"Michael," I said calmly, "why is your wife calling my bank?""

He hesitated.

"She isn't exactly calling your bank. She called the resort's payment department, and they told her the original cardholder had removed the payment method.""

"That's correct.""

"She wanted to know if they could contact you.""

"And?""

"They said they couldn't discuss your financial arrangements with her.""

I almost smiled.

"At least someone understands how payment authorization works.""

"Mom, please. This is getting out of hand.""

I leaned against the balcony railing.

"What's getting out of hand, sweetheart?""

"Vanessa is upset. The dinner is tonight, and the resort says they need another card to guarantee the reservation.""

"Then she can provide one.""

"She doesn't have enough available credit.""

I looked toward the ocean.

"Then perhaps she should choose a less expensive dinner.""

There was a long silence.

Finally, Michael said, "You know how important this anniversary is to her.""

"Yes. That's why I spent over twelve thousand dollars arranging a beautiful vacation.""

"Mom...""

"No, Michael. Let me ask you something. When Vanessa told strangers that I hadn't paid for this trip, did you correct her?""

He sighed.

"I told you I was sorry.""

"You told me you didn't want an argument. That's different.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

Before he could answer, I heard Vanessa again.

"Michael! Are you seriously still talking to her?""

He covered the phone, but not quickly enough.

I heard him say, "I'm trying to fix it.""

Then Vanessa replied, "There is nothing to fix. She needs to stop being difficult.""

I closed my eyes.

"Michael, I'm going to have dinner in my room tonight. I don't want to argue with either of you.""

"Mom, please don't do this.""

"Goodnight, sweetheart.""

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I simply stood there.

The ocean was darkening, and small lights were beginning to appear along the beach.

I remembered Robert.

He would have hated this.

Not because I had stopped paying, but because I had allowed someone to make me feel guilty for expecting ordinary kindness.

He used to tell me that generosity was supposed to come from the heart, not from fear of disappointing people.

I went inside, changed into a comfortable dress, and ordered dinner from the restaurant downstairs.

I paid with my own card.

A young waiter delivered grilled fish, roasted vegetables, and a glass of sparkling water.

He placed the tray on my balcony table.

"Enjoy your evening, Mrs. Bennett.""

"Thank you.""

I ate slowly while listening to the waves.

For the first time that day, nobody was telling me where I could sit, when I should speak, or how much space I was allowed to occupy.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

You have made this entire vacation incredibly uncomfortable. I hope you're happy.

I read it twice.

Then another message arrived.

Michael is extremely stressed because of you.

I typed a response.

Deleted it.

Typed another.

Deleted that too.

Finally, I put the phone facedown.

I wasn't going to spend another evening defending myself against someone who had already decided I was the villain.

The next morning, I woke early.

I put on a white linen dress, ordered coffee, and walked down to the beach.

The resort was beautiful in the morning. Staff members were arranging sun loungers, and the smell of fresh bread drifted from the breakfast terrace.

I found a quiet table overlooking the water.

I was halfway through my coffee when someone pulled out the chair opposite me.

It was Michael.

"Morning, Mom.""

"Good morning.""

He looked exhausted.

His hair was messy, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.

"Can I sit?""

"Of course.""

He sat down and stared at the menu.

"Vanessa isn't coming?""

"She's still upstairs.""

I nodded.

A waiter approached.

"Good morning. Would you like something to drink?""

Michael ordered coffee.

When the waiter left, he leaned forward.

"Mom, I need you to understand something.""

I waited.

"Vanessa feels like you've taken control of the vacation.""

I slowly put down my cup.

"How?""

"Because you booked everything. The flights, the hotel, the transportation. She feels like she has to ask permission for things.""

"Did I ever tell her what she could do?""

"No.""

"Did I ever tell her when she could leave the resort?""

"No.""

"Did I ever tell her how to spend her anniversary?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"No, Mom.""

"Then what exactly did I control?""

He didn't answer.

I watched him for a moment.

"Michael, I gave you a gift. I didn't buy the right to control your lives.""

"I know.""

"But your wife seems to think that accepting my money means she gets to insult me without consequences.""

He looked uncomfortable.

"She says she never wanted you to pay for everything.""

I almost laughed.

"Then why did she accept it?""

"She didn't want to disappoint me.""

I stared at him.

"Michael, I received a text from your wife that said, 'Great. Send Michael the confirmation.'' Does that sound like someone who was worried about disappointing me?""

He looked down.

The waiter returned with his coffee.

Michael waited until he walked away.

"Mom, can you just put the card back for the rest of the week? I'll pay you back when we get home.""

I studied his face.

"Can you afford to pay me back?""

He hesitated.

"Eventually.""

"That's not an answer.""

He looked away.

I softened my voice.

"Michael, I didn't offer to pay because I wanted a loan agreement. I wanted to give you a vacation. But I will not continue funding expenses that are being used to humiliate me.""

He nodded slowly.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

"Hey.""

I could hear her through the speaker.

"Where are you?""

"Having breakfast with Mom.""

"Seriously? You left without me?""

"I thought you were sleeping.""

"Well, I'm awake now. Come upstairs.""

"Vanessa, I'm talking to Mom.""

"Then finish. We need to figure out dinner.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Okay. I'll be up in a minute.""

He ended the call.

Then he stood.

"Can we talk later?""

"Of course.""

He hesitated before leaving.

"Mom?""

"Yes?""

"I'm sorry.""

I looked at him.

"I hope you mean that.""

He walked away.

I finished my breakfast and spent the next few hours at the pool.

Around noon, I received a notification from the resort.

It was an email regarding the anniversary dinner.

The subject line read:

*IMPORTANT: Anniversary Dining Reservation Requires Updated Payment Authorization.*

I opened it.

The message explained that the sunset dinner package had not been fully prepaid. The original reservation included a table arrangement, a welcome drink, and a special anniversary dessert, but the final food and beverage charges required a valid payment method.

I understood immediately.

I had arranged the reservation as a special experience, not as an unlimited restaurant tab.

Vanessa had apparently assumed everything would be free.

I read the message again.

Then I saw another email beneath it.

It was from the resort's guest services manager.

She wanted to speak with me about a request made by another guest.

I called the number.

A woman answered.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Bennett. This is Elena from guest services.""

"Hello.""

"I'm sorry to bother you, but we have a small situation involving your reservation.""

"What happened?""

"Mrs. Vanessa Bennett has requested that your personal payment method be restored to the anniversary suite. She has also asked whether the resort can transfer the dinner charges to your separate room.""

I was silent.

"Did she explain why?""

Elena paused.

"She said the anniversary dinner had been arranged as a gift from you and that you had agreed to cover all related expenses.""

I looked at the ocean.

"I did not agree to that.""

"I understand. We simply wanted to confirm with you directly.""

"Thank you for checking.""

"Of course. Would you like us to make any changes?""

"No. Please keep my room and its expenses separate from theirs.""

"Certainly, Mrs. Bennett.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

Then I opened my messages.

I had three new texts from Vanessa.

The first said:

The restaurant needs your card. Please sort it out.

The second:

This is embarrassing. Everyone is expecting us tonight.

The third was different.

You can't seriously be trying to ruin our anniversary over a misunderstanding.

I stared at the screen.

A misunderstanding?

I was about to respond when another notification appeared.

This time, it was a photograph.

Vanessa had sent me a picture of the anniversary dinner table.

The restaurant had already arranged white flowers, candles, and a small card bearing their names.

Underneath, she wrote:

Look what you've ruined.

I placed the phone on the table.

Then I noticed something in the photograph.

The small card didn't simply say Happy Anniversary.

It said:

*Celebrating Four Years of Love — Hosted by Michael and Vanessa Bennett.*

I enlarged the image.

Hosted by Michael and Vanessa.

Not sponsored by Carol.

Not a gift from Michael's mother.

They had apparently planned to take credit for everything.

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had been so determined to erase my contribution.

It wasn't just embarrassment.

It was deliberate.

I was still staring at the photograph when a new message appeared from Michael.

Mom, please come to dinner tonight. I think we need to talk as a family.

I considered refusing.

Then I looked at the picture again.

Perhaps it was time for a conversation that nobody could avoid.

I replied with two words.

I'll come.

But I had no idea that, before dinner, someone else would arrive at the resort.

May you like

Someone who knew exactly how much I had paid.

And someone Vanessa had desperately hoped would never meet me.
