Amused

Chapter 5: The Guest Who Knew the Truth

At 4:30 that afternoon, I was getting ready for dinner when the telephone in my room rang.

I had just finished putting on a navy-blue dress and fastening a simple gold necklace.

"Hello?""

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Bennett. This is the front desk. We have a visitor asking for you.""

I frowned.

"A visitor?""

"Yes, ma'am. A Mr. Daniel Reeves.""

I recognized the name immediately.

Daniel was Michael's former business partner.

He was also the husband of Vanessa's closest friend, Lauren.

"Did he say what he wanted?""

"He mentioned that he was meeting someone for dinner and asked whether you were available.""

I looked at the clock.

"Please send him up.""

A few minutes later, there was a knock.

I opened the door.

Daniel stood in the hallway wearing a pale blue shirt and khaki trousers. He looked surprised to see me.

"Carol?""

"Daniel. What a surprise.""

He smiled and stepped forward.

"May I come in?""

"Of course.""

He entered and glanced around the room.

"Nice place.""

"Thank you. I understand you're staying here?""

"Just arrived this afternoon. Lauren had a work commitment in San Diego, so I came down a day early.""

I offered him a glass of water.

He accepted and sat near the window.

For a moment, we exchanged ordinary pleasantries.

Then Daniel leaned forward.

"Carol, I hope you don't mind me asking, but is everything all right?""

I looked at him.

"Why wouldn't it be?""

He hesitated.

"Because I ran into Michael downstairs.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What did he say?""

"Not much. He looked pretty miserable.""

I sighed.

"There's been a disagreement.""

Daniel nodded.

"Lauren mentioned something about Vanessa being upset.""

I looked at him carefully.

"Did she tell you why?""

He shook his head.

"She said there was a problem with the hotel payment.""

I took a breath.

"Daniel, may I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Did Vanessa tell you who paid for this vacation?""

His eyebrows lifted.

"She said you had helped with some arrangements.""

I laughed softly.

"Some arrangements?""

I picked up my phone and opened the original booking confirmation.

Then I showed him the total.

$12,184.76.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Good Lord.""

"That was the original trip for Michael and Vanessa. I also paid for the additional arrangements connected to my stay.""

He looked at me.

"You paid for all of this?""

"Yes.""

He sat back.

"Vanessa told Lauren that she and Michael had been saving for almost two years.""

I looked at him.

"Apparently, they were.""

He frowned.

"That's strange.""

"Why?""

"Because Lauren said Vanessa was talking about how proud she was that they could finally afford a luxury vacation.""

I gave a small, humorless smile.

"That's an interesting story.""

Daniel took another sip of water.

Then he said something unexpected.

"Carol, I think there's something you should know.""

I waited.

"Last month, Vanessa invited Lauren and me to dinner. She showed us pictures of the resort and told us about the anniversary plans.""

"Yes?""

"She said Michael had surprised her with the entire trip.""

I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.

"She said Michael paid?""

"Yes. She said he had been saving money secretly because he wanted to give her something special.""

I looked toward the window.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Daniel continued.

"I remember thinking it was strange because Michael had told me business was slow. But I assumed he'd managed to put something aside.""

I slowly turned back toward him.

"Did she mention my name?""

"Not until Lauren asked who had arranged the bookings. Then Vanessa said you had offered to help with some travel details.""

I almost smiled.

"Travel details.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I'm sorry, Carol. I didn't know.""

"It's not your fault.""

He looked genuinely uncomfortable.

"Does Michael know she's telling people this?""

I thought about the airport.

His silence.

The way he had avoided my eyes.

"I suspect he does.""

Daniel leaned back.

"That's not good.""

"No.""

He hesitated.

"Would you mind if I told Lauren what you've just shown me?""

I considered it.

"I don't want to start a fight between friends.""

"I understand. But Lauren has been telling people how romantic Michael's surprise was. If that's not true, I don't think it's fair to let that continue.""

I nodded.

"Tell her whatever you think is appropriate. I have no interest in pretending I paid for nothing.""

Daniel stood.

"Thank you for being honest with me.""

"Thank you for asking.""

At the door, he turned around.

"One more thing.""

"Yes?""

"Vanessa has been talking about this vacation for months. She said the anniversary dinner was supposed to be the highlight.""

I smiled faintly.

"Then I hope she enjoys it.""

He looked at me as if he wasn't sure whether I was joking.

Then he left.

I remained by the door for several seconds.

I had always known Vanessa enjoyed expensive things.

She liked designer handbags, luxury restaurants, and hotels where the lobby smelled like fresh flowers.

There was nothing inherently wrong with that.

But I had never imagined she would take my gift, erase my contribution, and present my money as evidence of her husband's generosity.

I returned to the mirror and adjusted my necklace.

At 6:15, I walked downstairs.

The restaurant was beautiful.

Glass doors opened onto a terrace overlooking the ocean. Candles flickered on the tables, and soft music played beneath the sound of the waves.

Michael and Vanessa were already seated.

Vanessa wore a red silk dress and sparkling earrings.

When she saw me, she looked toward Michael.

"She's here.""

I approached the table.

"Good evening.""

Michael stood.

"Hi, Mom.""

Vanessa didn't move.

"You're late.""

I checked my watch.

"It's 6:17. The reservation is at 6:30.""

She looked away.

The waiter approached.

"Good evening. May I bring you something to drink?""

Michael ordered a cocktail.

Vanessa ordered champagne.

I requested sparkling water.

The waiter placed the menus on the table.

Vanessa immediately said, "We'll be having the anniversary tasting menu.""

Michael looked at her.

"Vanessa, let's check the prices first.""

She glared at him.

"Michael, it's our anniversary.""

"I know.""

"And we've already planned this.""

I opened my menu.

The tasting menu cost nearly four hundred dollars per person, excluding wine.

I said nothing.

The waiter returned with the drinks.

Vanessa took a sip of champagne.

Then she looked at me.

"So, are we going to talk about what happened?""

I folded my napkin.

"What would you like to discuss?""

"Your little payment stunt.""

Michael shifted in his chair.

"Vanessa, please.""

"No. I'm tired of pretending this is normal.""

She turned toward me.

"You invited us on this vacation. You offered to pay. Then, when you didn't get enough attention, you suddenly removed your card.""

I looked at her.

"Is that what you believe happened?""

"That's what happened.""

"Vanessa, at the airport you told me I hadn't paid for the trip.""

She rolled her eyes.

"Here we go again.""

"You also told another family that I invited myself.""

"Because you made everything about you.""

I took a slow breath.

"Did you tell Lauren and Daniel that Michael paid for the vacation?""

Vanessa froze.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely uncomfortable.

"What?""

"Daniel came to see me this afternoon.""

Michael looked up.

"Daniel's here?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa placed her champagne glass down.

"What did you tell him?""

I kept my voice calm.

"Nothing that wasn't true.""

Her expression hardened.

"You had no right to discuss our private business.""

I stared at her.

"Your private business?""

"You know what I mean.""

"Vanessa, you told people your husband paid for a vacation that I purchased. That's not private business. That's a lie.""

Michael looked between us.

"Wait. What exactly did Daniel say?""

I turned toward my son.

"He told me Vanessa had been telling people that you secretly saved for months to surprise her with this trip.""

Michael's face changed.

He looked at Vanessa.

"Is that true?""

She took another sip of champagne.

"It was just easier to explain.""

"Easier?""

"Michael, don't make this a bigger deal than it is.""

He stared at her.

"You told Lauren I paid for everything?""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Yes, because I wasn't going to tell everyone my mother-in-law bought our anniversary vacation!""

The table went silent.

I looked at her.

"Why not?""

She laughed sharply.

"Because it's embarrassing!""

Michael leaned back.

"Vanessa.""

She turned toward him.

"What? You want me to tell everyone that we couldn't afford our own anniversary trip? That your mother had to rescue us?""

I felt the words settle between us.

Rescue.

That was how she saw it.

Not a gift.

Not kindness.

A humiliation she had to cover up.

I folded my hands on the table.

"Then why did you accept it?""

She stared at me.

"Because you offered!""

"Yes. And I offered because I love my son.""

Michael looked down.

I continued.

"I never asked you to announce it to the world. I never asked for public recognition. I simply expected you not to lie about me.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"You don't understand how it feels to have people think you're dependent on your husband's mother.""

I nodded slowly.

"Then perhaps you should have declined the gift.""

Her face flushed.

"You're impossible.""

The waiter approached discreetly.

"Excuse me. Before we proceed with the tasting menu, may I confirm the payment authorization?""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Yes. Use the card already on file.""

"I'm afraid we don't currently have an active card for the additional charges.""

She looked at me.

"Carol?""

I turned toward the waiter.

"Please keep the charges separate. I'll pay for my own meal.""

The waiter nodded.

"Certainly, ma'am.""

Vanessa pushed her chair back slightly.

"You're really doing this tonight?""

I looked at her.

"I'm paying for what I order. You can do the same.""

She turned toward Michael.

"Tell her to stop.""

Michael remained silent.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

His face went pale.

"What is it?"" Vanessa asked.

He didn't answer.

He read the message again.

Then he slowly turned the phone toward his wife.

I couldn't see the entire screen, but I recognized Daniel's name at the top.

Vanessa snatched the phone.

Her eyes moved across the message.

Then she looked up at me.

"What did you tell him?""

I didn't answer.

She stood abruptly.

"You're trying to destroy my reputation.""

Michael grabbed her wrist gently.

"Vanessa, sit down.""

She pulled away.

"No. I'm done.""

She picked up her handbag and walked toward the restaurant entrance.

Michael started to follow.

Then he stopped and turned toward me.

"Mom, I'm sorry.""

I looked at him.

"Don't apologize because she's angry. Apologize because you know what happened was wrong.""

He swallowed.

Then he followed his wife.

I sat alone at the table while the waiter returned with my meal.

I ate slowly.

I had paid for my dinner.

I had paid for my room.

And I had paid for the vacation that brought all of this into the open.

But there was something else I hadn't known.

Something Daniel had mentioned before leaving my room.

Vanessa hadn't simply been taking credit for the vacation.

May you like

She had been telling people a much bigger story about Michael's finances.

And the following morning, I would discover just how far that story had gone.
