Amused

Chapter 3: The First Bill She Couldn't Ignore

The flight to Cabo was almost four hours.

I sat in my assigned first-class seat, near the window, while Michael and Vanessa sat together across the aisle.

The flight attendant offered champagne.

I accepted a glass of sparkling water instead.

Vanessa ordered champagne, orange juice, and a breakfast platter.

Michael ordered coffee.

I watched them through the reflection in the window.

They were laughing quietly.

Occasionally, Vanessa showed Michael something on her phone, and he leaned closer to look.

They looked like a happy couple.

And I wondered how many people would have believed their vacation was a gift from them if they had been told the truth.

Halfway through the flight, Michael came over.

"Mom, can I sit here for a minute?""

"Of course.""

He took the empty seat beside me.

"About this morning...""

I waited.

He rubbed his hands together.

"Vanessa didn't mean to embarrass you.""

I looked at him.

"She said I didn't pay for the trip.""

"I know.""

"She told strangers I invited myself.""

"I know, Mom.""

"And you stood there.""

He looked down.

"I didn't want an argument.""

I watched a white cloud drift beneath the airplane.

"Michael, sometimes not defending someone is the same as choosing the other side.""

He sighed.

"You're making it sound worse than it was.""

I turned toward him.

"Would you have allowed someone to speak that way to Vanessa?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, "That's different.""

"How?""

"She's my wife.""

I nodded slowly.

There it was.

The sentence that explained everything.

I looked at my son, the little boy whose scraped knees I had cleaned, whose school lunches I had packed, whose college tuition I had helped pay.

"Michael, I'm your mother. Being married doesn't mean you stop knowing when something is wrong.""

He stared at his hands.

"I'll talk to her.""

I gave him a small smile.

"All right.""

He stood up and returned to his seat.

I didn't tell him about the payment method.

I wanted to see what happened when Vanessa had to take responsibility for the things she claimed to own.

We landed shortly after noon.

The Cabo airport was warm and bright, and the air smelled faintly of salt and jet fuel.

A driver was waiting outside with a sign bearing our names.

He wore a white shirt and held the sign above his head.

"Mr. and Mrs. Bennett?""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"That's us.""

The driver smiled.

"Welcome to Cabo. Your private vehicle is ready.""

He reached for Michael's suitcase.

Then he looked at me.

"And Mrs. Bennett, your luggage?""

I handed him my suitcase.

Vanessa glanced over.

"Mrs. Bennett?""

The driver nodded.

"Yes. We have three passengers listed.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Of course we do.""

Michael gave her a warning look.

"Vanessa.""

"What? I didn't say anything.""

The vehicle was a black luxury SUV with leather seats, bottled water, and a small cooler.

Vanessa climbed into the back beside Michael.

I took the front passenger seat.

During the drive, the driver introduced himself as Javier and pointed out a few landmarks.

"First time in Cabo, Mrs. Bennett?""

"Yes. It's beautiful.""

"You will love the resort. Very nice property.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Do you know if our suite is ready?""

Javier glanced at the tablet mounted near the dashboard.

"Let me check. We have one ocean-view suite under Mr. Michael Bennett, and a separate room under Carol Bennett.""

"Wonderful," Vanessa said.

"And the anniversary package?""

"Yes. Champagne and special dinner arrangements are included in your reservation.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Perfect.""

Then she looked at Michael.

"See? I told you everything would be fine.""

I turned toward the window.

I wondered how she would feel if she knew that the card she had been relying on was no longer attached to the reservation.

But I didn't say anything.

At the resort, the entrance was spectacular.

Palm trees lined the driveway. A fountain spilled water into a shallow stone pool, and the ocean stretched beyond the lobby windows.

A young employee approached with chilled towels and welcome drinks.

"Welcome to the Pacific Crown Resort.""

Vanessa practically floated through the lobby.

She took pictures of the entrance, the flowers, and the ocean.

"Michael, stand there. I want a picture.""

He stood beside a marble column.

"Smile.""

She took three pictures.

Then she turned to me.

"Could you move a little? You're in the background.""

I stepped aside.

"Certainly.""

She didn't thank me.

At reception, a young woman named Elena began checking us in.

"Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett. We have your anniversary suite prepared.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Excellent.""

Elena typed something into the computer.

"May I have the card you would like to use for incidental expenses?""

Vanessa looked at Michael.

He looked at her.

Then he glanced at me.

I said nothing.

Elena continued politely.

"We require a valid credit card for room service, spa appointments, dining outside the prepaid package, and other incidental charges.""

Vanessa opened her handbag.

"Sure. Michael, give me your wallet.""

Michael handed it over.

She took out a black credit card and passed it to Elena.

The receptionist inserted it into the terminal.

A few seconds later, she frowned.

"One moment, please.""

Vanessa checked her phone.

"Is there a problem?""

"I'm sorry. This card isn't being authorized.""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"That's impossible.""

Elena tried again.

The machine beeped.

"Declined.""

Vanessa looked at Michael.

"What's wrong with your card?""

"It's probably the international authorization. Try mine.""

He handed her another card.

Elena processed it.

Another beep.

Declined.

Michael frowned.

"That's strange.""

Vanessa looked increasingly irritated.

"Can you just use the card on the reservation?""

Elena checked the computer.

"Certainly. The original card has been removed from the account. We would need a new payment method.""

Vanessa's head turned slowly.

"What do you mean, removed?""

Elena remained professional.

"The previous payment method is no longer available for incidental charges.""

Vanessa looked at Michael.

"Didn't your mother arrange everything?""

He shifted his weight.

"She did.""

"Then why isn't the card there?""

I was standing a few feet away, holding my handbag.

I could have answered.

Instead, I looked at the receptionist.

"Would you mind checking whether my separate room is ready?""

"Of course, Mrs. Bennett.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Carol.""

I looked at her.

"Yes?""

"Did you remove your card?""

I held her gaze.

"I updated my payment arrangements.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means the card I originally provided is no longer available for additional charges.""

Her mouth fell open.

"Are you serious?""

"Completely.""

Michael stepped between us.

"Mom, what are you doing?""

I looked at him.

"Making sure my finances are handled properly.""

Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.

"Oh, this is unbelievable.""

She turned toward the receptionist.

"Can you just put everything back the way it was?""

Elena shook her head.

"I'm afraid the cardholder would need to authorize that.""

Vanessa looked at me again.

"Carol, this is ridiculous. We have a vacation planned.""

I smiled faintly.

"I know. You told everyone at the airport that you paid for it.""

Her cheeks flushed.

"Don't start with that again.""

"I'm not starting anything.""

"You know exactly what you're doing.""

"Yes, Vanessa. I do.""

Michael lowered his voice.

"Mom, can we please talk privately?""

"Certainly.""

We moved toward a quieter corner of the lobby.

Vanessa followed us.

Michael turned to me.

"Why did you remove the card?""

I looked directly at him.

"Because your wife told me I didn't pay for the trip.""

"That's not what she meant.""

"Then what did she mean?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Mom, she was upset.""

"So was I.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're punishing us over one comment?""

I took a breath.

"No. I'm simply no longer agreeing to pay for things while being told I contributed nothing.""

She stared at me.

"You offered to pay. Nobody forced you.""

"That's correct.""

"So why are you acting like we owe you something?""

"I don't expect repayment, Vanessa. I expected basic respect.""

She laughed.

"Respect? You came on our anniversary vacation.""

I looked at Michael.

"Your husband invited me.""

"He was trying to be nice.""

Michael finally spoke.

"Vanessa, stop.""

She turned toward him.

"Why? Am I wrong?""

He said nothing.

I felt the familiar disappointment settling into my chest.

Then I noticed the receptionist approaching.

"Mrs. Bennett?""

"Yes?""

"Your separate room is ready. However, there is a matter regarding the anniversary suite that I need to clarify with Mr. Bennett.""

Vanessa straightened.

"What matter?""

Elena glanced at her screen.

"The reservation includes prepaid accommodation, but the remaining services require a valid payment guarantee. Without one, certain amenities may be suspended.""

Vanessa frowned.

"Which amenities?""

Elena hesitated, choosing her words carefully.

"Room service, spa appointments, restaurant reservations that require a deposit, and some resort activities.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"You're telling me we can't use room service?""

"You may still order, but payment will need to be made at the time of service.""

"What about the anniversary dinner?""

"That reservation is currently marked as guaranteed by the original payment method. We may need an alternative card to secure it.""

Vanessa looked at Michael.

"Fix it.""

He swallowed.

"I'll call the bank.""

I watched them.

Neither of them had asked me to restore the card yet.

But I knew it was coming.

I picked up my suitcase.

"Well, I think I'll go unpack.""

Michael caught my arm gently.

"Mom, wait.""

I stopped.

"What is it?""

He glanced toward Vanessa, then lowered his voice.

"Can you just put the card back until we figure this out?""

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Michael, do you remember what you told me when I offered to pay for this vacation?""

He frowned.

"What?""

"You said I didn't have to do it.""

He nodded.

"And I told you I wanted to.""

I gently removed his hand from my arm.

"Well, sweetheart, I no longer want to.""

Then I walked toward the elevators.

Behind me, I heard Vanessa say something under her breath.

I couldn't make out every word.

But I heard one sentence clearly.

"This is going to ruin everything.""

I pressed the elevator button.

And for the first time since my husband died, I felt something I hadn't expected to feel on a vacation.

Relief.

Because I had finally stopped trying to earn a place in a family that treated my generosity like an obligation.

But I hadn't seen the last of the trouble.

At 6:17 that evening, while I was sitting on my private balcony overlooking the ocean, my phone began ringing.

It was Michael.

I answered.

"Hello, sweetheart.""

His voice was strained.

"Mom, we have a problem.""

I looked down at the waves rolling against the beach.

"What happened?""

He paused.

Then he said something that made me sit upright.

"Vanessa just found out the anniversary dinner was never fully prepaid. And she's telling everyone at the resort that you promised to cover it.""

I closed my eyes.

Then Michael added:

"Mom, there's something else. She just called your bank.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Why would she call my bank?""

Silence.

Then he whispered:

"Because she says you owe her an explanation.""

May you like

And before I could respond, I heard Vanessa shouting in the background.

"Tell your mother she needs to come downstairs. Right now!""
