Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything
Marcus stared at the USB drive.
“What's on it?””
Patricia glanced around the coffee shop.
“Robert recorded a conversation shortly before he died. He was speaking with Adrian and Laura.””
“Why didn't you give it to the police?””
“I tried. But the original recording was stored on an old computer. I couldn't access it until recently.””
She placed the drive in Marcus's hand.
“Listen to it somewhere secure.””
Marcus closed his fingers around it.
“Does Vanessa appear in the recording?””
“Not in the beginning.””
“Then why do you think it's connected to her?””
“Because Robert mentioned a woman named Vanessa.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“What did he say?””
Patricia shook her head.
“I haven't listened to the entire file. The audio is damaged. But I heard enough to recognize Adrian.””
Marcus immediately called Rebecca.
“Can you arrange for this recording to be examined?””
Rebecca answered after two rings.
“Where are you?””
“With Patricia Bennett.””
There was a pause.
“Robert Bennett's sister?””
“Yes.””
Marcus explained about the USB drive.
Rebecca's tone became serious.
“Don't alter the file. Don't upload it to random websites. Preserve the original device and let a qualified professional examine it.””
“Can you help?””
“Yes. Bring it to my office, and I'll arrange the next steps.””
Marcus looked at Patricia.
“Thank you.””
She nodded.
Then she leaned forward.
“Marcus, one more thing.””
“What?””
“Robert told me something before he died. He said Laura had found a way to make people believe whatever she wanted them to believe.””
Marcus remembered the fake video of Rebecca.
“Like creating false recordings?””
Patricia's expression changed.
“You've seen something?””
Marcus explained the suspicious footage.
Patricia looked horrified.
“Then they're doing it again.””
At Rebecca's office, the USB drive was placed in a sealed evidence envelope.
She reviewed the available information and contacted a digital forensics specialist.
The specialist agreed to examine the recording and verify its origin.
While they waited, Rebecca asked Marcus to explain the messages from Adrian.
She read each one.
“This is concerning,” she said.
“Can we stop Vanessa from taking Maya?””
“We can seek appropriate temporary orders. I'll prepare the necessary filings and review the evidence with you.””
Marcus looked down.
“She's going to hate me.””
Rebecca closed the folder.
“Your daughter doesn't need you to win a popularity contest with her mother. She needs you to protect her while treating her mother appropriately.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
Rebecca studied him.
“Have you spoken to Vanessa today?””
“No.””
“Good. Keep it that way unless it's about Maya.””
His phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
I want to see Maya tonight. Just the two of us.
Marcus showed Rebecca.
“Can I allow that?””
Rebecca considered it.
“We should arrange a neutral, documented meeting if appropriate. Given the threats and the current dispute, don't make an informal agreement that could create confusion later.””
Marcus nodded.
He sent a brief response.
I want Maya to have a relationship with you. Let's arrange a suitable meeting through our attorneys.
Vanessa replied immediately.
You are making me look like a terrible mother.
Marcus didn't respond.
Another message arrived.
You have no idea what Adrian and I have been through.
Marcus stared at it.
Then he typed:
This is about Maya, not Adrian.
He put his phone away.
At 4:20 p.m., the digital forensics specialist called Rebecca.
The recording had been successfully recovered.
Marcus sat across from her as she opened the file on her computer.
“Before we listen,” she said, “I want you to understand that recovering audio doesn't automatically establish the complete context. We'll need to verify the source and examine the recording carefully.””
Marcus nodded.
She pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then a man's voice.
Robert Bennett.
“I told you I don't want anything else to do with this.””
Adrian answered.
“It's already done, Robert.””
“I never agreed to this.””
Laura's voice followed.
“You signed the paperwork.””
“I signed an insurance update. I didn't sign away my company.””
A chair scraped.
Adrian spoke again.
“Those are the same documents you approved.””
“They're not!””
A loud thud followed.
Then Robert said something that made Marcus lean closer.
“I know about Vanessa.””
Silence.
Laura spoke first.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””
“She's the next one.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“You're imagining things.””
Robert's voice became louder.
“She doesn't know what she's signing. Just like I didn't.””
The recording crackled.
Then another voice appeared.
A woman's voice.
Vanessa.
“Adrian, we need to leave.””
Marcus felt his heart stop.
There was no mistaking it.
It was his wife's voice.
Robert responded.
“Vanessa, you need to listen to me. You don't understand what they're doing.””
Vanessa sounded irritated.
“I understand perfectly.””
“Then why are you helping them?””
“Because I want a future.””
Robert laughed bitterly.
“Not this way.””
The recording continued.
Vanessa said:
“Robert, you should worry about your own family.””
Then came Adrian's voice.
“Enough. We're leaving.””
The file ended.
Marcus sat motionless.
Rebecca paused the screen.
“Did you recognize that voice?””
“Yes.””
“Are you certain?””
“That's Vanessa.””
Rebecca nodded.
She didn't look surprised.
Instead, she opened another document.
“Marcus, I need you to hear something else.””
“What?””
“The specialist recovered metadata indicating that the recording was created approximately eight months before Robert's death.””
Marcus stared.
“Eight months?””
“Yes.””
“So Vanessa was involved with them before I even knew about Adrian?””
Rebecca looked at him carefully.
“We don't know the nature of her involvement yet.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She was standing in that room. She knew what they were doing.””
Rebecca remained quiet.
He stood and walked to the window.
His wife had looked into his eyes for seven years.
She had kissed him goodbye before work. She had celebrated Maya's birthdays beside him. She had held his hand at the hospital when their daughter had pneumonia.
And all that time, there might have been another version of Vanessa operating somewhere beneath the surface.
A version he had never known.
His phone rang.
Vanessa.
He answered.
“What?””
Her voice was trembling.
“Marcus, please don't listen to Patricia Bennett.””
He froze.
“How do you know I met Patricia?””
“She's a liar.””
“Why?””
“She has been trying to destroy Laura's life for years.””
Marcus glanced at Rebecca.
“Why were you with Adrian and Laura when Robert Bennett was alive?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Where did you get that recording?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
She had answered without answering.
“Were you involved in what happened to Robert?””
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
“Don't you dare accuse me of something like that!””
“Then explain why you were there.””
“I was working with Adrian!””
“On what?””
“Financial consulting!””
“Why was Robert saying you were the next one?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Marcus, you don't understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She took a shaky breath.
“Adrian told me they were helping Robert restructure his business. He said everything was legal. I didn't know what was happening.””
“You were there.””
“I was there because Adrian asked me to help with some paperwork.””
“What paperwork?””
“I don't remember.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Please. I was younger. I made mistakes.””
He stared at the floor.
“You're still making them.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“Marcus, I love you.””
He almost laughed.
“You kissed Adrian yesterday.””
“That was complicated.””
“You tried to move our daughter to Texas.””
“I was trying to give her a better life.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I didn't think it would matter!””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Then he asked the question he had been avoiding.
“Did you know about Robert's death?””
Vanessa stopped crying.
For several seconds, there was no sound.
Finally, she whispered:
“I didn't kill anyone, Marcus.””
He felt a chill pass through him.
He hadn't accused her of murder.
He hadn't even used the word.
But she had.
“Why would you say that?””
“Because I know what you're thinking.””
“No, Vanessa. You don't.””
He ended the call.
Rebecca watched him carefully.
“Marcus?””
He lowered the phone.
“She said she didn't kill anyone.””
Rebecca's expression became serious.
“Did you record that conversation?””
Marcus looked at his phone.
“No.””
“Then write down exactly what she said while you remember it. We need to preserve everything accurately.””
He nodded.
But before he could move, Rebecca's office door opened.
A young receptionist entered.
“I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's someone asking for Mr. Johnson.””
Marcus turned.
“Who?””
The receptionist looked nervous.
“Laura Bennett.””
Laura stood in the reception area wearing a dark green dress and carrying a black leather handbag.
She smiled when she saw Marcus.
“Hello, Marcus.””
Rebecca immediately stepped forward.
“Ms. Bennett, you need to leave.””
Laura ignored her.
“I just want to speak with him.””
Marcus stared at the woman.
“You're the one who pretended to be my lawyer.””
Laura smiled faintly.
“That's an unfortunate misunderstanding.””
“Who was in that video?””
“A colleague.””
“Why was she pretending to be Rebecca?””
Laura tilted her head.
“Perhaps you should ask your wife.””
Rebecca moved between them.
“This conversation is over.””
Laura finally looked at her.
“Rebecca, you're making a mistake.””
“Leave.””
Laura turned back to Marcus.
“Your wife is in serious trouble. Adrian has been promising her things he cannot deliver.””
Marcus said nothing.
Laura continued.
“She believes she's going to get a new life in Texas. She believes he'll leave his business behind and build something with her.””
“And?””
“He won't.””
Marcus studied her face.
“Why are you telling me?””
Laura smiled.
“Because Vanessa has something I want.””
“What?””
“Documents.””
“What documents?””
Laura leaned closer.
“The original files from Robert Bennett's estate.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“You think Vanessa has them?””
“I know she does.””
Rebecca immediately intervened.
“That's enough. Leave now.””
Laura straightened.
Before turning away, she looked directly at Marcus.
“Ask your wife what she did with the original recording.””
Marcus froze.
“What do you mean?””
Laura smiled.
“Robert made two copies.””
Then she walked out.
Marcus looked at Rebecca.
“Two copies?””
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“Apparently.””
Marcus's mind raced.
Patricia had found one recording.
But where was the second?
And what did Laura believe Vanessa had done with it?
That evening, Marcus returned to Nicole's apartment.
Maya was sitting at the kitchen table, carefully decorating a birthday card.
“Daddy!””
He hugged her.
“What are you making?””
“A card for Mommy.””
Marcus looked down.
The front read:
*I MISS YOU, MOMMY.*
He swallowed.
“That's very sweet.””
Maya held up a pink crayon.
“Do you think she'll like it?””
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Can I give it to her tomorrow?””
“We'll see what we can arrange.””
She nodded and returned to coloring.
Nicole approached Marcus.
“Any news?””
He explained the recovered recording.
By the time he finished, Nicole looked furious.
“Vanessa knew these people before she married you?””
“Apparently.””
“Then the entire marriage was a lie.””
Marcus looked toward Maya.
“Don't say that where she can hear you.””
Nicole softened.
“I'm sorry.””
He sat down.
For a few minutes, they watched Maya draw.
Then his phone vibrated.
An email from an unfamiliar address.
The subject line read:
*THE SECOND RECORDING.*
Marcus opened it.
There was no greeting.
Only one sentence.
Vanessa didn't destroy the original because she needed it to protect herself from Adrian.
An attachment appeared beneath it.
*ROBERT_BENNETT_FINAL_AUDIO.mp4*
Marcus looked at Nicole.
Then he pressed play.
A man's voice filled the room.
Robert Bennett.
“If you're hearing this, it means Laura and Adrian have already started lying about what happened to me.””
A pause.
Then Robert said:
“Vanessa Johnson knows exactly where the money went. She was the one who moved it.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“And if she has married Marcus Johnson, then his family may already be in danger.””
Marcus slowly turned toward Maya.
His daughter was still coloring.
She looked up and smiled.
“Daddy, can you help me draw a heart?””
Marcus forced himself to smile.
“Of course, princess.””
But his mind was racing.
Robert hadn't simply accused Vanessa of being involved.
He had specifically mentioned Marcus's family.
And then the final sentence played.
“Whatever you do, don't trust the person who claims to be helping you. The most dangerous person is the one who already has access to your home.””
The recording ended.
Marcus stared at the screen.
He had thought the danger came from Adrian.
Then Laura.
Now he wasn't sure.
Because someone had been inside his home for months.
May you like
Someone had access to his daughter's bedroom, his financial documents, and every private conversation he had ever had with Vanessa.
And he was beginning to suspect that the person he had trusted most might have been involved in something far worse than an affair.
