Amused

Chapter 3: The Lie That Could Cost Him His Daughter

Marcus didn't sleep.

He sat at the kitchen table until nearly four in the morning, studying the photograph and the documents Evelyn had given him.

The picture outside the bar was harmless.

He had met Nicole after work because she was going through a difficult divorce. They had talked for twenty minutes, hugged goodbye, and gone their separate ways.

But the photograph had been taken from across the street.

Someone had deliberately captured it from an angle that made it look intimate.

Marcus placed it beside the settlement proposal.

Vanessa wasn't merely preparing to leave him.

She was preparing to make him look like the reason their marriage had failed.

At 6:30 a.m., he called his older sister.

Nicole answered on the fourth ring.

“Marcus? Do you know what time it is?””

“I'm sorry. I need to ask you something.””

Her voice immediately changed.

“What happened?””

“Do you remember when we met at Miller's Bar three weeks ago?””

“Of course. I cried into my margarita for twenty minutes.””

“Did you notice anyone taking pictures?””

Nicole laughed.

“Why would anyone photograph two miserable siblings discussing their divorces?””

“I'm serious.””

There was a pause.

“No. Why?””

Marcus sent her the photograph.

A few seconds later, his phone rang again.

“Marcus, where did you get this?””

“It was left at my house.””

“That's creepy.””

“Vanessa is trying to make it look like I was having an affair.””

Nicole went quiet.

Then she said, “You need to get a lawyer.””

“I'm meeting one today.””

“Good. And Marcus?””

“Yes?””

“Don't underestimate her.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“She's my wife, Nicole.””

“That's exactly why you keep underestimating her.””

He said nothing.

Nicole continued.

“Remember when she convinced you to put the house solely under your name because she said her credit score was too low?””

Marcus frowned.

“Yes.””

“And remember how she insisted you take out that additional life insurance policy?””

“Yes.””

“Did you ever check who the beneficiary was?””

Marcus stopped moving.

“What?””

“Your life insurance, Marcus. Who did you name as the beneficiary?””

“Vanessa.””

Nicole exhaled.

“Of course.””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“Why are you bringing that up?””

“Because she asked me something strange last month.””

“What?””

“She wanted to know whether you had ever changed your will.””

His stomach tightened.

“What did you tell her?””

“That I didn't know. Why would I know?””

Marcus stared at the wall.

Nicole lowered her voice.

“Marcus, what is happening?””

He told her about the kiss, Evelyn, the settlement documents, and the message about the money.

By the time he finished, Nicole was furious.

“She is not taking Maya away from you.””

“I'm not going to let her.””

“Good. And don't sign anything.””

“I won't.””

“I'm coming over.””

“Nicole, you don't have to—”

“I'm coming over, Marcus.””

The call ended.

At seven, Maya walked into the kitchen wearing her yellow pajamas.

Her hair was messy, and she was carrying the stuffed rabbit by one ear.

“Daddy?””

Marcus immediately put the papers away.

“Good morning, princess.””

“Did Mommy call?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Is she coming home?””

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

Maya climbed onto the chair beside him.

“Can I call her?””

Marcus studied her little face.

“Of course.””

He handed her his phone.

Maya dialed Vanessa.

It rang twice.

“Hello?”” Vanessa answered.

“Mommy?””

Her voice immediately softened.

“Maya! Baby! How are you?””

Maya smiled.

“I'm okay.””

“Where's Daddy?””

“Here.””

“Give him the phone.””

Maya looked disappointed.

“But Mommy, I wanted to talk to you.””

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa sighed.

“Okay, sweetheart. What do you want?””

Maya glanced at Marcus.

“Are you coming home today?””

“I have work, baby.””

“But you can come after work.””

“Maybe.””

“And can we eat pizza together?””

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “We'll see.””

Maya's smile faded.

“Mommy?””

“Yes?””

“Why did you kiss Adrian?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

On the other end, Vanessa went silent.

Finally, she said, “That's an adult matter, sweetheart.””

“But you kissed him.””

“Maya, I don't want to discuss this right now.””

“Did you stop loving Daddy?””

“Put your father on the phone.””

Maya slowly handed Marcus the device.

He brought it to his ear.

“What?””

“Don't let Maya ask me questions like that again.””

Marcus stared at the kitchen wall.

“She saw what happened.””

“She doesn't need to understand everything.””

“She needs to know she didn't cause it.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Marcus, I'm not doing this.””

“Then tell me when you're coming home.””

“I'm not coming home until we settle things.””

“Fine.””

“Good. And I want Maya tonight.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“We'll discuss that after I've spoken to a lawyer.””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“You can't keep my daughter from me.””

“I'm not trying to.””

“Then don't force me to take legal action.””

Marcus ended the call.

Maya stared at him.

“Is Mommy angry?””

He pulled her into his arms.

“No, baby. Mommy is dealing with some grown-up problems.””

“Are you angry?””

He kissed the top of her head.

“I'm sad. But I'm not angry with you.””

She rested her cheek against his chest.

“Can we make pancakes?””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Absolutely.””

For twenty minutes, he let himself be a father instead of a betrayed husband.

He flipped pancakes, made silly faces with chocolate chips, and let Maya pour too much syrup over hers.

She laughed when one pancake landed crookedly on the plate.

For the first time since the previous afternoon, the sound of her laughter made the house feel alive.

Then the doorbell rang.

Marcus opened it.

Nicole stood on the porch holding a grocery bag.

“Emergency breakfast supplies,” she announced.

Maya ran toward her.

“Aunt Nicole!””

Nicole crouched and hugged her.

“There's my favorite little troublemaker.””

“Daddy made pancakes!””

“Then I guess I'll have to inspect them.””

Maya giggled.

Nicole looked up at Marcus.

Her smile disappeared when she noticed his face.

“We need to talk.””

At 10:15 a.m., Marcus sat in the office of attorney Rebecca Collins.

She was a woman in her late forties with short dark hair and a calm, direct manner.

She listened without interrupting as Marcus explained everything.

When he finished, she opened the envelope Evelyn had given him.

“Do you recognize these documents?””

“Yes.””

“Did you sign them?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Rebecca examined the settlement proposal.

“Mr. Johnson, this is not a routine mortgage update.””

“I figured that out.””

“This document appears designed to transfer certain financial interests and establish the terms of a divorce settlement.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Can she take the house?””

“That depends on several things, including ownership, contributions, and the applicable laws. But don't assume anything based on what your wife has told you.””

Rebecca turned another page.

“Do you know whether your wife has access to your financial accounts?””

“She has access to our joint savings.””

“How much is in there?””

“About seventy-four thousand dollars.””

“Have you checked it recently?””

“Last night.””

“And?””

“Still there.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Let's review your statements and transaction history. I also want you to change passwords on accounts that are solely yours and secure your personal email.””

Marcus nodded.

Then Rebecca picked up the photograph of him and Nicole.

“Who took this?””

“I don't know.””

“Your wife?””

“Possibly.””

Rebecca studied it.

“Have you ever been physically aggressive toward your wife?””

“No.””

“Have you threatened her?””

“No.””

“Has she ever called the police?””

“Never.””

“Have you ever been arrested?””

“No.””

Rebecca placed the photograph down.

“Then we need to understand why she is creating a record that suggests otherwise.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Can she use a photograph like this to take my daughter?””

“A single photograph proves very little. But if someone constructs a larger false narrative, it can create problems. That's why documentation matters.””

He leaned back.

“What should I do?””

“Keep every message. Save every email. Don't delete anything.

Avoid confrontations, especially in front of your daughter. And don't discuss legal strategy with your wife.””

Rebecca paused.

“There's something else I need to ask.””

“What?””

“Has Vanessa ever mentioned a man named Daniel?””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Why?””

Rebecca looked at the documents.

“Because this settlement proposal references a third-party financial account. The account isn't identified by name, but there's a note about a Daniel being authorized to receive certain proceeds.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Evelyn heard Adrian mention Daniel.””

Rebecca looked up sharply.

“Who is Evelyn?””

Marcus explained.

Rebecca wrote down the name.

“Have you spoken to this Daniel?””

“No.””

“Do you know his surname?””

“No.””

She leaned back.

“Then we need to find out who he is.””

Marcus stared at the papers.

For seven years, he had believed his greatest responsibility was keeping his family financially secure.

Now it appeared that someone had been planning to turn his responsibility into a weapon.

Before he could ask another question, his phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

I'm coming to pick up Maya at noon. Have her ready.

Marcus showed Rebecca.

“Can she do that?””

Rebecca studied the message.

“You need to consider Maya's safety and emotional well-being. If there is no court order restricting either parent, don't make impulsive decisions. But you should avoid handing your daughter over in a heated confrontation. Let's discuss a calm, documented arrangement.””

Marcus nodded.

Then another message appeared.

And don't think your little meeting with a lawyer changes anything.

He stared at the screen.

“How does she know?””

Rebecca's expression hardened.

“Has anyone else seen your messages?””

“No.””

“Then someone may be monitoring your accounts, or she may be guessing.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

Rebecca took out a notepad.

“Go home. Secure your devices. I'll contact you after reviewing these documents.””

At 11:52 a.m., Vanessa's white SUV pulled into the driveway.

Marcus watched through the living room window.

She stepped out wearing a cream-colored coat, designer sunglasses, and the same gold wedding ring.

Adrian was in the passenger seat.

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

Why was Adrian bringing her to their home?

The doorbell rang.

Nicole, who had stayed behind with Maya, opened the door before Marcus could reach it.

Vanessa removed her sunglasses.

“Where is my daughter?””

Nicole crossed her arms.

“Hello to you too.””

“I'm not here to talk to you.””

“Then you should have thought about that before bringing your boyfriend.””

Vanessa's face reddened.

“Excuse me?””

Adrian stepped out from behind her.

“Can we keep this civil?””

Nicole laughed.

“You kissed her in front of her child yesterday. I think you've already missed the opportunity to lecture anyone about being civil.””

Vanessa pushed past her.

“Marcus!””

He appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Don't shout.””

“Where's Maya?””

“In her room.””

“I want to see her.””

“She's upstairs.””

Vanessa started toward the stairs.

Marcus stepped aside.

Maya appeared at the top landing.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa's expression changed immediately.

“Baby!””

Maya walked down slowly.

Vanessa opened her arms.

Maya hesitated.

“Are you taking Adrian with us?””

Vanessa froze.

“Sweetheart, Adrian is just a friend.””

Maya looked at her.

“But you kissed him.””

“That's not something we need to discuss.””

“Why not?””

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

“Can you please make her stop asking these questions?””

Marcus remained still.

“She deserves honest answers.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Don't tell me how to parent my own child.””

Maya looked between them.

“Can we all have dinner together?””

Vanessa's expression softened.

“Of course, baby. We can do that.””

Maya smiled a little.

“Really?””

“Really.””

Then Adrian cleared his throat.

“Vanessa, we should get going.””

Maya looked at him.

“Are you coming to dinner too?””

He said nothing.

Vanessa touched her daughter's shoulder.

“Not today.””

Maya lowered her eyes.

“Okay.””

Marcus watched his daughter's face.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was simply beginning to understand that promises could be made without being kept.

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

“I need Marcus to sign something before we leave.””

Marcus's stomach tightened.

“What?””

She produced a white folder.

“The mortgage paperwork.””

Nicole immediately stepped forward.

“Didn't you hear him say he's reviewing everything with his lawyer?””

Vanessa glared.

“This is between my husband and me.””

Marcus took the folder but didn't open it.

“I'll review it.””

“Just sign it.””

“No.””

Her expression changed.

“Marcus, don't start.””

“I'm not signing anything today.””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“You're making a very big mistake.””

He looked at Adrian.

“Does he know what you're asking me to sign?””

Adrian adjusted his cuff.

“I don't think this is the appropriate time.””

Marcus gave a humorless smile.

“That's funny. Yesterday you didn't seem concerned about appropriate timing.””

Vanessa grabbed the folder from Marcus's hand.

“Fine. If you want to make this difficult, we'll do it the hard way.””

She turned toward Maya.

“Come on, baby. Let's go.””

Maya looked at Marcus.

“Daddy?””

He crouched.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

“Can I stay here tonight?””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Why?””

Maya looked down at her shoes.

“Because I don't want to see Adrian.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa's lips tightened.

“That's enough.””

Maya began to cry.

Marcus gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

“She's allowed to have feelings.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You've been filling her head with things about me.””

“No. She saw what happened herself.””

Adrian stepped between them.

“Vanessa, let's leave.””

Vanessa grabbed Maya's arm.

“Come on.””

Maya pulled away.

“Mommy, you're hurting me.””

Marcus immediately moved forward.

“Let go of her.””

Vanessa released Maya.

For a moment, everyone stood motionless.

Then Vanessa pointed at Marcus.

“This is exactly what I was talking about. You're turning my daughter against me.””

Marcus didn't answer.

Vanessa stormed toward the door.

Adrian followed.

Just before leaving, he turned around.

“Enjoy the house while you can, Marcus.””

Marcus stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian smiled faintly.

“You'll understand soon enough.””

The door slammed.

Nicole locked it.

Maya ran into Marcus's arms.

He held her tightly.

But his attention remained on the white folder Vanessa had left behind on the coffee table.

Nicole picked it up.

“Don't touch anything until Rebecca sees it.””

Marcus nodded.

Then he noticed something sticking out of the folder.

A second document.

It wasn't a mortgage update.

It was a printed application from a private school in Dallas.

The child's name was Maya Johnson.

The requested enrollment date was January 5.

The parent authorization section contained Marcus's signature.

Except Marcus had never signed it.

He picked up the paper.

His hands began to shake.

“Nicole?””

She looked over.

“What?””

He pointed to the signature.

“That's not my handwriting.””

Nicole stared at it.

Then she whispered, “Marcus, why would Vanessa be enrolling Maya in a school in Texas?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

He answered.

A man's voice spoke immediately.

“Mr. Johnson, my name is Daniel Reeves. I believe we need to discuss your wife.””

Marcus went completely still.

“Who are you?””

The man paused.

May you like

Then he said something that made Marcus grip the phone so tightly his knuckles turned white.

“I'm the person who helped Vanessa arrange the transfer of your daughter.””
