Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Plan

“I'm the person who helped Vanessa arrange the transfer of your daughter.””

Marcus felt the room tilt.

He looked at the phone in his hand, then at Maya, who was sitting beside Nicole on the couch, hugging her stuffed rabbit.

“What did you just say?”” Marcus demanded.

“My name is Daniel Reeves. I work with an educational placement agency. Your wife contacted me several months ago about relocating your daughter to Dallas.””

“Relocating her where?””

“Westlake Preparatory Academy. It's a private school. Vanessa indicated that the family would be moving to Texas early next year.””

Marcus stared at the application on the coffee table.

“And you accepted a signature that wasn't mine?””

There was a pause.

“I'm not aware of any forged signature, Mr. Johnson.””

“I'm looking at it right now. That's not my signature.””

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Perhaps there's been a misunderstanding.””

“Listen carefully. I have never authorized my daughter to move to Texas. I have never applied for a job there. And my wife has not discussed relocating with me.””

Another silence.

Then Daniel said, “I think we should meet.””

“Why?””

“Because there's information I believe you should know before you make any decisions.””

Marcus glanced at Nicole.

“When?””

“Tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock. The Westbridge Hotel downtown. I'll bring the original application.””

“Don't destroy anything.””

“I wouldn't dream of it.””

Marcus ended the call.

Nicole immediately stood.

“What did he say?””

Marcus handed her the phone.

“He helped Vanessa arrange Maya's transfer.””

Nicole's face went pale.

“Without your permission?””

“Apparently.””

Maya looked up from the couch.

“Daddy, am I going somewhere?””

Marcus crouched beside her.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But that man said something about moving me.””

He gently took her hands.

“Listen to me. Nobody is taking you anywhere without making sure you're safe.””

“Will I have to leave my school?””

“No.””

“Will I have to leave you?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Never because of something you did. Understand?””

Maya nodded, but her lower lip trembled.

Nicole came over and hugged her.

“Hey, how about we make some cookies?””

Maya looked uncertain.

“Can Daddy come too?””

“Absolutely,” Nicole answered.

Marcus forced a smile.

“I'm a terrible cookie decorator, but I'll try.””

For the next hour, he helped his daughter mix flour, sugar, and chocolate chips.

Maya insisted on making one cookie shaped like a heart.

“That's for you, Daddy.””

“Why?””

“Because you look sad.””

Marcus looked down at the little girl.

He had spent years trying to give her a childhood without worries.

Now he was struggling to protect her from the very person who was supposed to make her feel safest.

He kissed her forehead.

“Thank you, princess.””

But when Maya went upstairs to wash her hands, Nicole pulled him aside.

“Marcus, there's something I haven't told you.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“Vanessa called me last week.””

“Why?””

“She wanted to know whether you had ever talked about moving away.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What did you say?””

“I told her you loved your job and weren't planning to go anywhere.””

“Did she explain why she was asking?””

Nicole hesitated.

“She said she was considering starting over somewhere new.””

“Without me?””

“She didn't say that directly.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

Nicole continued.

“But she did ask whether Maya would be happier in a smaller school.””

Marcus looked at the staircase.

“She was planning this before yesterday.””

“I think so.””

He walked to the kitchen and picked up the application.

There were several sections he hadn't noticed before.

One listed the proposed guardian during school hours.

Another listed an emergency contact.

The emergency contact was Adrian Cole.

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

Adrian wasn't simply Vanessa's lover.

He was being positioned as a permanent part of Maya's life.

And Marcus was being erased.

The following morning, Marcus arrived at the Westbridge Hotel ten minutes early.

He had barely slept.

At 9:03, a tall man in a charcoal suit approached his table.

“Mr. Johnson?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel Reeves.””

They shook hands.

Daniel placed a leather folder on the table.

“Thank you for meeting me.””

Marcus didn't return the polite smile.

“Show me the application.””

Daniel opened the folder.

The original document lay inside.

Marcus immediately recognized the signature.

It was an almost perfect imitation of his handwriting.

His name had been written in dark blue ink.

But the final letter in Johnson was slightly different.

He would have noticed it anywhere.

“Who gave you this?””

“Vanessa.””

“When?””

“About six weeks ago.””

“And you accepted it?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“We received the application along with supporting documents.””

“What supporting documents?””

“Copies of identification, proof of residence, and a letter explaining the family relocation.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What letter?””

Daniel removed another page.

Marcus read the first sentence.

My husband, Marcus Johnson, has accepted a position in Dallas, Texas, and our family will be relocating at the beginning of the new year.

He looked up.

“That's a lie.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I understand that now.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

Marcus pointed to another paragraph.

It stated that Vanessa would become Maya's primary residential parent following the relocation.

Marcus's stomach twisted.

“Did she tell you we were separated?””

“She indicated that the marriage was ending.””

“Did she tell you I agreed to this?””

“She said you had discussed the arrangement.””

Marcus pushed the paper away.

“I have never discussed this.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Mr. Johnson, I need you to understand that I was acting on information provided by a parent.””

“A parent who forged my signature.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“There's another document.””

He removed a printed email.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was Daniel.

The message read:

Marcus is difficult when he feels challenged. I prefer to keep the relocation quiet until everything is finalized. Once the paperwork is accepted, he will have limited ability to interfere.

Marcus read the sentence twice.

“Why did you agree to help her?””

Daniel looked genuinely uncomfortable.

“Because she presented the move as a family decision. She also said you were aware of the school arrangements.””

“Then why did you call me?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Adrian contacted our office yesterday.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What did he want?””

“He asked whether we could accelerate Maya's enrollment and whether the original parental consent had been verified.””

“Why?””

Daniel opened another page.

“Apparently, he wanted Maya enrolled before the end of the year.””

Marcus felt a cold wave pass through him.

“Did he say why?””

Daniel nodded.

“He said the family needed to establish residency quickly.””

“Which family?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Daniel, I need the truth.””

The man looked toward the hotel entrance.

Then he lowered his voice.

“I believe Vanessa and Adrian are planning to live together in Dallas.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Planning?””

“Yes. They have already discussed housing.””

“Do you have proof?””

Daniel nodded.

He showed Marcus a forwarded email.

The subject line read:

*Dallas Residence — Final Details.*

The message contained an address in a gated community.

The names listed on the proposed lease were Vanessa Johnson and Adrian Cole.

Maya's name appeared under additional occupants.

Marcus wasn't listed.

He felt his jaw tighten.

“Was my daughter supposed to move into a house with that man?””

Daniel looked down.

“That appears to be the arrangement.””

Marcus stood so abruptly that his chair scraped against the floor.

“I'm done.””

“Mr. Johnson, please.””

Marcus stopped.

Daniel handed him a business card.

“I can provide a written statement confirming that Vanessa submitted the application and that you never personally appeared to authorize it.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Will you do that?””

“Yes.””

“Today?””

“Yes.””

Marcus took the card.

Then Daniel said something else.

“There's one more detail.””

Marcus turned.

“Of course there is.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Vanessa paid an additional processing fee for a special custodial arrangement.””

Marcus stared.

“What custodial arrangement?””

“The application requested that Adrian Cole be listed as an authorized emergency guardian during the relocation period.””

Marcus slowly lowered the card.

“Did you approve that?””

“No. We requested additional documentation.””

“What documentation?””

Daniel hesitated.

“A temporary guardianship authorization.””

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

“Signed by whom?””

Daniel opened the folder.

The last page contained a document titled:

*TEMPORARY CHILDCARE AND GUARDIANSHIP AUTHORIZATION.*

Marcus looked at the signature.

His own name.

Again.

Except this time, beneath the signature was a paragraph stating that he voluntarily granted Adrian authority to make certain educational and medical decisions for Maya during the relocation.

Marcus couldn't speak.

Someone had not only planned to move his daughter away.

Someone had tried to give another man the authority to make decisions for her.

He looked at Daniel.

“Did you send this to anyone?””

“No.””

“Keep it that way.””

Marcus collected the copies.

Then he walked out of the hotel.

In the parking garage, he called Rebecca Collins.

She answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“I need you to see something.””

“What happened?””

“Vanessa forged my signature on a school transfer application. She also tried to authorize Adrian as a temporary guardian.””

Rebecca went silent.

Then her voice became firm.

“Do not confront her. Bring every document to my office immediately.””

Marcus looked at the papers.

“I'm coming.””

He ended the call.

Before he could start his car, a notification appeared.

It was from Vanessa.

I know you've been asking questions. We need to settle this before you ruin everything.

A second message followed.

If you tell anyone about Dallas, I'll make sure everyone knows what kind of father you really are.

Marcus stared at the screen.

For the first time, he understood that his wife wasn't simply afraid of losing her marriage.

May you like

She was afraid of losing control of a plan she had spent months constructing.

And she was willing to use their daughter to protect it.
