Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside the Law Office
Marcus stood in the middle of the living room, gripping his phone.
“What do you mean she came to your office?””
Rebecca's voice was calm, but he could hear the tension beneath it.
“I received a consultation request from Vanessa Johnson six weeks ago. At the time, I didn't know she was your wife.””
Marcus looked at his closed laptop.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't recognize her name until I reviewed the information you sent me today. I immediately checked the intake records.””
“Who was with her?””
“Adrian Cole.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Of course.””
“They requested advice about a potential custody dispute.””
“What did you tell them?””
“I refused to represent either of them after learning that Vanessa was married to you and that your family situation involved an active conflict.””
Marcus exhaled sharply.
“Then why is there a video of her sitting in your office?””
Rebecca paused.
“That's what concerns me.””
“What?””
“I never authorized anyone to record a consultation in my office. I also never met with Vanessa in the room shown in that footage.””
Marcus frowned.
“But I saw you.””
“You saw someone who looks like me.””
He went completely still.
“What?””
“Marcus, I wasn't in that room.””
He slowly sat down.
“Then who was?””
“I don't know. But I suspect the footage has been manipulated.””
Marcus looked at his laptop.
The woman in the video had the same short dark hair, the same glasses, and the same voice as Rebecca.
It had looked unmistakable.
“Why would someone fake a video of you?””
“I don't know yet. But I want you to preserve that file. Do not send it to anyone except me through a secure channel.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Rebecca, what is happening?””
“I wish I could tell you. But I have another concern.””
“What?””
“The documents you showed me this morning contain information that isn't normally available to a school placement agency. Your financial arrangements, the proposed custody terms, and your employment details.””
“So?””
“Someone may have had access to confidential information about your family.””
Marcus stared at the wall.
“Are you saying someone inside a legal office is helping Vanessa?””
“I'm saying we need to investigate before drawing conclusions.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Can I trust you?””
Rebecca didn't answer immediately.
Then she said, “You can trust me to protect your interests, Marcus. But I also want you to understand something. From this moment forward, every document needs to be independently verified.””
The call ended.
Marcus opened his laptop again.
He copied the suspicious video to a separate drive and photographed the folder information.
Then he opened the camera recordings.
The files showed something else.
Vanessa had been entering the office of their shared home almost every night while he slept.
She would sit at the desk, open his laptop, and search through folders.
Sometimes she photographed documents with her phone.
Sometimes she copied files to a small external drive.
On one recording, she opened his email.
On another, she photographed his tax returns.
Marcus leaned back.
She hadn't simply been preparing for divorce.
She had been gathering information.
But why?
He looked at the date of the earliest recording.
Five months earlier.
That was when Vanessa had first suggested they increase their life insurance coverage.
He opened the insurance folder.
The policy showed a death benefit of $650,000.
Vanessa was the primary beneficiary.
Maya was listed as the secondary beneficiary.
Marcus stared at the document.
Then he noticed an unfamiliar attachment.
*BENEFICIARY CHANGE REQUEST.*
The request had been submitted three months earlier.
The proposed new beneficiary was Adrian Cole.
Marcus felt physically sick.
His wife had tried to transfer his life insurance benefits to her lover.
He immediately called Rebecca again.
She answered.
“Marcus?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa tried to change the beneficiary on my life insurance policy.””
“To whom?””
“Adrian.””
Rebecca went silent.
“Do you have the document?””
“Yes.””
“Send it to me.””
Marcus forwarded the file.
Rebecca's response was immediate.
“Marcus, I need you to contact the insurance company directly using a verified number. Ask them to freeze any pending changes and confirm the current beneficiary information.””
“Can they do that?””
“They can explain the available security procedures. Do not assume the change was processed until you confirm it.””
Marcus nodded.
Then he remembered the suspicious recording.
“Rebecca?””
“Yes?””
“I want to know who that woman was in the video.””
“So do I.””
“Because if someone is pretending to be you, they're trying to make me believe I have no one left to trust.””
Rebecca's voice softened.
“Then let's make sure they don't succeed.””
The next morning, Marcus drove to the insurance company's local office.
He brought his identification, policy documents, and the suspicious beneficiary request.
A representative named Karen Miller reviewed the file.
“Mr. Johnson, I can see the request.””
“Was it approved?””
Karen studied the screen.
“No. It was flagged for additional verification.””
Marcus exhaled.
“Why?””
“The signature did not match the one on file.””
He leaned forward.
“Can I get a copy?””
“We can provide a copy of the submitted request and explain the dispute process.””
“Please do.””
Karen printed several pages.
Marcus examined the request.
The signature was again an imitation of his own.
But this time, something else caught his attention.
The contact email associated with the request belonged to a company called Cole Strategic Consulting.
He looked up.
“Who submitted this?””
Karen checked.
“The request was uploaded through an account registered to an authorized insurance intermediary.””
“Name?””
She hesitated.
“I'm sorry. I can only provide certain information through the formal verification process.””
Marcus nodded.
“That's fine.””
Karen handed him the papers.
“Mr. Johnson, I recommend changing your account access credentials and reviewing any other policies connected to your household.””
“Thank you.””
As he left the office, his phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
You should stop digging. Vanessa is giving you an opportunity to walk away.
Marcus stared at it.
Another message appeared.
Think about Maya before you destroy her family.
He looked around the parking lot.
No one seemed to be watching him.
He forwarded the messages to Rebecca.
Then he called Nicole.
“Can you pick Maya up from school today?””
“Of course. What's wrong?””
“I need to handle something.””
“Is it Vanessa?””
“Not directly.””
Nicole sighed.
“Marcus, you're scaring me.””
“I found a forged insurance beneficiary request. Adrian was supposed to receive the money.””
There was a long pause.
Then Nicole said, “You need to tell the police.””
“I'm speaking to Rebecca about that.””
“Good. And don't go anywhere alone.””
Marcus promised he would be careful.
But he didn't realize someone had already noticed his movements.
At 1:30 p.m., he returned home.
A black SUV was parked near his driveway.
He recognized it.
Vanessa's vehicle.
He entered the house.
The living room was empty.
Then he heard voices coming from the kitchen.
Vanessa.
And another man.
Marcus walked toward the doorway.
“What's going on?””
Vanessa turned.
“Marcus.””
The man beside her stood.
He was in his early fifties, wearing a navy blazer and carrying a leather briefcase.
“Mr. Johnson,” he said.
“I'm Thomas Bennett.””
Marcus frowned.
“Do I know you?””
“I'm Vanessa's attorney.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“You hired an attorney?””
“Obviously.””
Thomas placed a document on the counter.
“We're here to discuss a temporary parenting arrangement.””
Marcus didn't touch it.
“I have my own attorney.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Of course you do.””
Thomas opened the briefcase.
“Mr. Johnson, we're hoping to avoid an unnecessary dispute. Vanessa would like Maya to spend the next several weeks with her while the two of you resolve your marital issues.””
“Where?””
Vanessa answered.
“With me.””
“Where will you be living?””
“That's not relevant.””
“It is if you're taking our daughter out of state.””
Thomas cleared his throat.
“Mr. Johnson, this isn't a custody hearing. We're simply discussing a voluntary arrangement.””
Marcus looked at the document.
The first paragraph stated that he would voluntarily allow Vanessa to take Maya to Texas for an extended stay.
The second paragraph stated that he would not interfere with her schooling or medical decisions during that period.
The third paragraph contained another forged signature.
Marcus looked up.
“I'm not signing this.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Why are you making everything so difficult?””
“Because you keep trying to make decisions about our daughter without me.””
Thomas intervened.
“Perhaps we should take a moment.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“Did you prepare this document?””
“Yes.””
“Did you verify my consent?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa represented that you were aware of the proposed arrangement.””
“Did she tell you she forged my signature on the school application?””
Vanessa slammed her hand against the counter.
“That's enough!””
Thomas looked between them.
“Vanessa, perhaps you should let me handle this.””
She turned toward him.
“You said he would sign!””
Marcus froze.
Thomas looked at her sharply.
“Vanessa.””
She realized what she had said.
Marcus slowly turned his head.
“You told him I would sign?””
Vanessa's face reddened.
“I meant that you would understand once you read everything.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. You told him I would sign.””
Thomas closed his briefcase.
“I think we're finished for today.””
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Thomas, wait.””
He pulled away.
“Not here.””
He walked toward the front door.
Vanessa followed him.
“Don't leave!””
Thomas stopped at the doorway.
“Vanessa, I told you I wouldn't participate in anything that wasn't properly authorized.””
Then he left.
Marcus stared after him.
Vanessa turned around.
“You've ruined everything.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What exactly have I ruined?””
“My chance to have a peaceful separation!””
“You call this peaceful?””
“You're impossible!””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Where is Maya supposed to live?””
“With me.””
“Where?””
“Texas.””
“With Adrian?””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“That's none of your business.””
“He's not her father.””
“And neither are you the only person who gets to make decisions!””
Marcus took a step backward.
“I'm her father. I have every right to know where she's going.””
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“You're going to regret this.””
She stormed out.
Marcus watched through the window as she climbed into her SUV.
But this time, she didn't leave immediately.
She sat behind the steering wheel, talking on her phone.
Then she looked directly at the house.
Her lips moved.
Marcus couldn't hear the words.
But he didn't need to.
He recognized the expression.
It was the same expression she had worn outside her office when he had caught her kissing Adrian.
Not shame.
Not regret.
Anger.
That evening, Marcus took Maya to the park.
He wanted her to spend a few hours doing something normal.
She ran toward the swings, laughing as the autumn wind lifted her hair.
Marcus pushed her gently.
“Higher, Daddy!””
“Not too high!””
“Higher!””
He smiled.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from Rebecca.
I have identified the woman in the video.
Marcus stopped pushing the swing.
He opened the message.
Her name is Laura Bennett. She is Thomas Bennett's wife.
Marcus stared.
Thomas Bennett.
Vanessa's attorney.
He immediately called Rebecca.
She answered.
“Marcus, listen carefully.””
“What does Laura have to do with this?””
“I checked the footage you sent. The woman appears to be Laura Bennett, not me.””
“Why was she pretending to be you?””
“I'm still investigating. But Thomas Bennett has previously worked with Laura on legal matters.””
Marcus looked toward Maya.
She was smiling, swinging her legs.
“Does Thomas know?””
“I don't know. But there's another problem.””
“What?””
“Laura Bennett contacted my office this afternoon.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“What did she want?””
“She asked whether I would be willing to testify that you had behaved aggressively during a previous consultation.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
“But you've never met me before today.””
“Exactly.””
He looked at the phone.
“Why would she ask you that?””
“Because someone appears to be building a false record of your behavior.””
Marcus watched Maya jump off the swing.
She ran toward him.
“Daddy! Look!””
He smiled and caught her.
“Beautiful jump, princess.””
Then he turned away and lowered his voice.
“Rebecca, I need to know who's behind this.””
“I understand.””
“Can you find out?””
“I'm trying.””
A moment later, another message arrived.
It was from an unfamiliar number.
A photograph.
Marcus opened it.
The image showed Maya standing outside her school that afternoon.
Someone had taken the picture from a car across the street.
Beneath it was a message.
You should think carefully before making this harder for Vanessa.
Marcus felt his entire body go cold.
He immediately looked around the park.
A black sedan was parked near the entrance.
Its windows were dark.
Then the driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
He held up his phone.
And pointed it directly at Maya.
“Daddy?”” she whispered, noticing Marcus's expression.
He quickly moved her behind him.
“Stay close to me, sweetheart.””
The man took one more photograph.
Then he got back into the car.
Marcus pulled out his phone and called the police.
But before the call connected, another message arrived.
This time, the sender's name appeared.
*Adrian Cole.*
Tomorrow, Vanessa will file for emergency custody. By the time you're finished fighting, Maya will already be gone.
Marcus stared at the message.
Then another one appeared.
And if you want to know why Laura Bennett is involved, ask your wife what happened to her first husband.
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
He looked at Maya.
Then toward the road where the black sedan had disappeared.
Laura Bennett had been pretending to be his lawyer.
Thomas Bennett had been trying to obtain his signature.
Adrian was threatening to take his daughter.
And Vanessa had apparently been hiding something much bigger than an affair.
For the first time, Marcus wondered whether the man who had kissed his wife was actually the most dangerous person in the entire story.
May you like
Because what had happened to Laura Bennett's first husband?
And why did Adrian seem so certain Marcus would eventually suffer the same fate?
