Chapter 5: The Recording That Didn't Tell the Truth

Rebecca Collins studied the documents for nearly twenty minutes without speaking.

She placed the school application beside the alleged guardianship authorization, then compared both signatures with Marcus's driver's license.

Finally, she removed her glasses.

“This is serious.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Can she legally move Maya to Texas?””

“Not simply because she wants to. We need to establish the current legal arrangements and determine what action is appropriate. But these documents raise significant concerns.””

“What about the forged signature?””

“Preserve the originals. We'll discuss the appropriate reporting process. I also want the school and the placement agency notified in writing that you dispute the authorization.””

Marcus nodded.

Rebecca continued.

“Has Vanessa made any threats about custody?””

“She says she'll take legal action.””

“Anything more specific?””

He showed her the messages.

Rebecca read them carefully.

Then she asked, “Have you ever recorded an argument with your wife?””

“No.””

“Has she ever told you that she recorded you?””

Marcus remembered Evelyn's warning.

“She apparently told someone at work she had a recording that would make me look unstable.””

Rebecca leaned back.

“Then we need to find out what that recording contains.””

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

“I've never hit Vanessa. I've never threatened her. I have never done anything to hurt Maya.””

“I believe you. But we need evidence, not just your word.””

Marcus nodded.

Rebecca wrote something down.

“I recommend that you avoid private confrontations. Communicate in writing whenever possible. If you need to discuss parenting arrangements, keep the conversation calm and focused on Maya.””

“What if Vanessa shows up and tries to take her?””

“We'll work on an appropriate temporary arrangement. Don't use Maya as a messenger, and don't let her feel she has to choose between her parents.””

Marcus looked down.

“She's already asking whether her mother still loves her.””

Rebecca's expression softened.

“Then her emotional well-being needs to be at the center of everything we do.””

He swallowed.

“I don't want my daughter growing up thinking this is what marriage looks like.””

“Then show her something different. Show her that adults can set boundaries without being cruel.””

Marcus nodded.

Before leaving, Rebecca gave him a checklist of records to preserve.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Messages.

School communications.

Insurance documents.

And anything connected to the alleged recordings.

When Marcus reached his car, his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

“What?””

“Where are you?””

“Working.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I'm not.””

She laughed coldly.

“You really think I don't know you've been talking to people?””

Marcus said nothing.

“Listen, I want you home at six. We need to discuss our marriage.””

“I'm not discussing anything without my lawyer.””

Her voice changed.

“Your lawyer?””

“Yes.””

A short, bitter laugh escaped her.

“Wow. You really went there.””

“You forged my signature.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, “What are you talking about?””

“The school application.””

He heard her breathing change.

“What school application?””

“Dallas.””

“Marcus, I have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Then explain why your name is on the application.””

She said nothing.

He continued.

“And explain why you tried to authorize Adrian as Maya's guardian.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“Who told you that?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

There it was.

He didn't need another confession.

“Goodbye, Vanessa.””

“Don't you dare hang up!””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he sat motionless.

Then a message appeared.

It was a photograph.

Vanessa had sent him a picture of a document.

*Emergency Protective Statement — Preliminary Draft.*

His name appeared at the top.

The allegations beneath it included emotional intimidation, aggressive behavior, and unpredictable outbursts.

Marcus felt sick.

He forwarded the photograph to Rebecca.

Her response came almost immediately.

Do not respond. Save everything.

At 5:42 p.m., Marcus returned home.

Nicole was preparing dinner while Maya sat at the kitchen table drawing.

“Daddy!”” Maya called.

He smiled.

“Hey, princess.””

She held up her drawing.

It showed three people standing beneath a bright yellow sun.

A little girl stood between two adults.

Marcus recognized himself on the left.

Vanessa was on the right.

But there was a large gap between the two adults.

“What's this?”” he asked.

“Our family.””

He studied the picture.

“Why are Mommy and Daddy so far apart?””

Maya shrugged.

“Because you don't stand together anymore.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

Nicole looked away.

Maya continued coloring.

“I made Mommy's dress pink because she likes pink.””

“That's beautiful, baby.””

“Can I give it to her?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Of course.””

Maya smiled and returned to her crayons.

Nicole approached Marcus quietly.

“Did you find out anything?””

He nodded.

“She's planning to move Maya to Texas.””

Nicole's eyes widened.

“What?””

“She forged my signature on school and guardianship documents.””

Nicole put down the spoon.

“She's lost her mind.””

Marcus shook his head.

“There's more. She's preparing some kind of protective statement against me.””

“What does that mean?””

“She wants to make me look dangerous.””

Nicole stared at him.

“That's insane.””

“Apparently, she has a recording.””

Nicole crossed her arms.

“Of what?””

“I don't know yet.””

A small voice interrupted them.

“Daddy?””

Marcus turned.

Maya was holding her drawing.

“Can we call Mommy?””

He glanced at Nicole.

Then he nodded.

“Sure, sweetheart.””

Maya dialed.

Vanessa answered after three rings.

“Hello?””

“Mommy!””

“Hi, baby.””

“Look what I drew!””

“Oh, that's lovely.””

“It's our family.””

“I'm sure it's beautiful.””

Maya held the drawing toward the phone as though her mother could see it.

“Can I bring it to you?””

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said, “Maybe tomorrow.””

Maya's face brightened.

“Really?””

“Yes, sweetheart. But I need to talk to Daddy first.””

Maya handed Marcus the phone.

“Here.””

He took it.

“What?””

“Come outside.””

“Why?””

“Because I'm here.””

Marcus looked through the kitchen window.

A dark sedan was parked across the street.

He stepped onto the porch.

Vanessa stood beside her SUV.

Adrian was inside the car.

“What do you want?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I want my daughter.””

“She can see you. But I'm not handing her over while we're arguing about these documents.””

“I'm her mother.””

“And I'm her father.””

“You're making this ugly.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You made it ugly when you kissed Adrian in front of her.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Can we stop talking about that?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“Marcus, I made a mistake.””

He stared at her.

“A mistake?””

“Yes. It happened. I regret how you found out.””

“How you found out?””

She looked away.

“I didn't want Maya involved.””

“She was standing right there!””

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“I'm trying to fix things.””

“By moving our daughter to Texas?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You had no right to investigate me.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“No right?””

“It's my life.””

“And Maya's life?””

“She's my daughter too!””

“Then why did you try to give Adrian authority over her?””

Vanessa's face changed.

For one brief moment, she looked genuinely frightened.

Then she raised her voice.

“You're twisting everything!””

Marcus stepped back.

“I think we're finished talking.””

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

“Fine. Since you want the truth, maybe you should hear this.””

She pulled out her phone.

“I have a recording.””

Marcus looked at the device.

“Of what?””

“Of you.””

She tapped the screen.

A familiar voice filled the porch.

It was Marcus.

But he didn't recognize the conversation immediately.

The recording played.

“You'll regret this, Vanessa. I swear you'll regret this!””

Then a loud crash.

A woman's voice screamed.

The recording ended.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You see? That's who you really are.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

“Where did you get that?””

“From our home.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

Marcus remembered the argument.

It had been the night Vanessa told him she wanted to spend the weekend with Adrian's team at a company retreat.

He had been upset.

He had raised his voice.

But he remembered something else.

The crash hadn't been caused by him.

Vanessa had thrown a glass against the kitchen wall.

He had shouted those words because she had just threatened to leave with Maya without telling him where they were going.

“Play it again,” he said.

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“The whole recording.””

“You've heard enough.””

“No. Play the whole thing.””

She lowered her phone.

“Why?””

“Because you edited it.””

Vanessa's expression went blank.

Marcus took a breath.

“I remember that night. You were standing beside the kitchen counter. You threw a glass. I picked up the pieces because Maya was upstairs.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You're lying.””

“No. And I remember what happened immediately before I said that.””

“What?””

“You told me that if I ever questioned your relationship with Adrian again, you'd make sure I never saw Maya.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

Marcus continued.

“You left out that part, didn't you?””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrian opened the car door.

“Vanessa, we need to go.””

She looked toward him.

Marcus noticed the panic in her eyes.

“What else did you record?”” he asked.

“Nothing.””

“Then why are you so afraid of me hearing the rest?””

Vanessa put her phone away.

“You're becoming impossible.””

She walked toward the car.

Marcus called after her.

“Vanessa!””

She stopped.

“Did you put a camera in our house?””

Her shoulders stiffened.

Then she turned around.

“Maybe you should ask yourself why I felt I needed one.””

She climbed into the SUV.

Adrian followed.

The vehicle pulled away.

Marcus stood on the porch until the taillights disappeared.

When he returned inside, Nicole was waiting.

“What happened?””

“She played a recording.””

Nicole frowned.

“What kind?””

“One that makes me sound like I threatened her.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

He told Nicole what he remembered.

She listened carefully.

Then she said, “Marcus, what if she has more?””

He stared toward the staircase.

“Then I need to find out where she got them.””

At 9:16 p.m., Maya was asleep.

Nicole had gone home.

Marcus sat alone in the living room with his laptop.

He checked his email, bank statements, and shared cloud account.

Most of the files were ordinary.

Family photographs.

Tax documents.

School records.

Then he found a folder titled:

*HOME SECURITY — BACKUP.*

He opened it.

The folder contained dozens of video files.

Some were from the living room.

Others showed the kitchen and front entrance.

Marcus stared at the dates.

The earliest recording was from five months earlier.

He opened one.

It showed him washing dishes while Vanessa sat at the kitchen island.

He opened another.

It showed Vanessa standing in the hallway, talking on the phone.

He increased the volume.

Her voice became clear.

“Adrian, I told you, I need more time.””

A pause.

“No, Marcus doesn't suspect anything.””

Another pause.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“Once the custody issue is settled, everything becomes easier.””

Marcus leaned closer.

She continued.

“I'm not leaving without Maya. He can keep the house if he wants.””

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

Then she said something that made him stop the video.

“Besides, if he becomes difficult, we'll use the recording from the kitchen.””

He stared at the screen.

The next file was dated the same evening as the argument.

He opened it.

This time, the footage began several minutes before the recording Vanessa had played.

The camera showed the kitchen.

Vanessa stood beside the counter, holding her phone.

Marcus entered.

Their conversation began.

And then, just before the glass shattered, Vanessa said something he had never heard in her edited version.

“Go ahead, Marcus. Raise your voice. I dare you.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

She deliberately picked up the glass.

And threw it.

He watched the video twice.

Then a third time.

His wife hadn't merely edited an argument.

She had provoked it.

And she had been recording him for months.

Suddenly, a notification appeared on his laptop.

*New file uploaded to shared folder.*

Marcus clicked it.

The filename was:

*CUSTODY_EVIDENCE_FINAL.mp4*

He opened it.

The screen showed Vanessa sitting in a lawyer's office.

Across from her sat a woman Marcus recognized.

Rebecca Collins.

His own attorney.

Marcus stared at the screen in disbelief.

Why was his wife sitting in his lawyer's office?

Then the video played.

Vanessa leaned forward and said:

“I'm prepared to give you everything you need. But I want one thing in return.””

The woman across from her answered.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled.

“I want Marcus to lose custody of Maya.””

Marcus slammed the laptop shut.

His phone began ringing.

Rebecca.

He answered immediately.

“Rebecca, I need you to explain something.””

Her voice was urgent.

“Marcus, don't go anywhere. I need to tell you something about Vanessa.””

“What?””

A long silence followed.

May you like

Then Rebecca said:

“Your wife contacted my office six weeks ago. And she didn't come alone.””
