Chapter 7: The Secret Behind Laura Bennett
Marcus didn't drive home immediately.
After the incident at the park, he took Maya to Nicole's apartment and explained what had happened. Nicole listened with growing horror, especially when he showed her the photograph taken outside Maya's school.
“Someone is following my niece?”” she demanded.
Marcus nodded.
“Apparently.””
Nicole locked the apartment door.
“Then she's staying here tonight.””
“I don't want to frighten her.””
“Marcus, someone photographed an eight-year-old child and sent you a threat. We're already past the point of pretending this is normal.””
Maya sat on the couch, drawing quietly.
She had noticed the adults whispering, but she hadn't asked questions.
Marcus crouched beside her.
“Princess, Aunt Nicole is going to have a sleepover with you tonight.””
Maya looked up.
“Are you staying too?””
“I have a few things to take care of.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Are you going away?””
“No, sweetheart. I'll be back in the morning.””
She reached for his hand.
“Promise?””
Marcus kissed her forehead.
“Promise.””
Nicole watched him carefully.
“Call me when you get home.””
“I will.””
Before leaving, Marcus spoke quietly to his sister.
“Don't let anyone pick her up without checking with me first. Not even Vanessa.””
Nicole nodded.
“Understood.””
He drove directly to the police station.
At 9:40 p.m., Marcus sat across from Officer Daniel Harris in a small interview room.
The officer examined the photograph of Maya outside her school.
“Who sent this?””
“Adrian Cole. My wife's affair partner.””
“Are you certain?””
“The message came from his number.””
Officer Harris wrote something down.
“Have you had previous contact with this individual?””
Marcus explained the confrontation outside Vanessa's office, the threats, the forged documents, and the black sedan at the park.
The officer listened carefully.
“Do you know the vehicle's registration?””
“No. The windows were tinted.””
“Did you recognize the driver?””
“No.””
Officer Harris leaned back.
“Mr. Johnson, we'll document the threats and review the evidence you've provided. If you see that vehicle again, don't approach it. Contact emergency services if you believe your daughter is in immediate danger.””
Marcus nodded.
Then he placed another document on the desk.
“This is a forged guardianship authorization.””
Officer Harris examined it.
“Who submitted this?””
“My wife. Or someone acting on her behalf.””
“Have you filed a formal dispute?””
“I'm working with my attorney.””
The officer nodded.
“Keep the originals secure. We may need them.””
Marcus hesitated.
“There's something else. Adrian told me to ask about Laura Bennett's first husband.””
Officer Harris looked up.
“Laura Bennett?””
“She's connected to my wife's lawyer.””
“Do you know anything about her?””
“Not yet.””
The officer made another note.
“Don't investigate her yourself if you believe there's a threat. Let us know if you receive additional messages.””
Marcus thanked him and left.
But he couldn't shake Adrian's final message.
Ask your wife what happened to her first husband.
At 10:30 p.m., Marcus sat in his car outside his house.
He opened his laptop and searched for Laura Bennett.
The first results showed a successful family-law consultant based in Ohio.
There were photographs of her at charity events, business conferences, and fundraising dinners.
Then he found an old newspaper article.
*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DIES IN APPARENT ACCIDENT; WIFE INHERITS ESTATE.*
The article was six years old.
The deceased man's name was Robert Bennett.
Marcus opened it.
Robert had been married to Laura for eleven years. He died when his car left a rural road during a storm.
The official report described the incident as an accident.
His estate had been transferred to Laura.
Marcus continued searching.
Another article appeared.
*Bennett Family Dispute Raises Questions Over Estate Documents.*
He clicked.
The article explained that Robert's brother had challenged the will, claiming that several financial documents had been altered shortly before Robert's death.
The case had eventually been settled privately.
No criminal charges had been filed.
Marcus leaned closer.
A photograph showed Laura standing outside a courthouse.
Beside her was Adrian Cole.
Marcus's stomach tightened.
He zoomed in.
Adrian looked younger, but there was no mistaking him.
Why had Adrian been connected to Laura's first husband's estate?
He searched again.
This time, he found a company registration document.
*Cole Strategic Consulting.*
The company had been established seven years earlier.
Its listed business partners included Adrian Cole and Laura Bennett.
Marcus stared at the date.
Seven years.
That was the same year he had married Vanessa.
He continued scrolling.
A company profile showed that Cole Strategic Consulting specialized in financial restructuring, corporate consulting, and estate planning referrals.
Marcus suddenly remembered the insurance beneficiary request.
Adrian hadn't merely been involved because he was Vanessa's lover.
His business had connections to the financial documents Vanessa had been preparing.
Marcus opened another article.
This one was about Robert Bennett's estate.
A quote from Robert's brother caught his attention.
My brother trusted the wrong people. He believed the documents he signed were harmless. By the time he understood what was happening, everything had already been transferred.
Marcus read the sentence again.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice whispered, “Marcus Johnson?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Patricia Bennett. I'm Robert's sister.””
Marcus sat upright.
“How did you get my number?””
“Laura told me your name.””
His grip tightened.
“Why?””
“Because she knows you've been asking questions.””
Marcus looked toward the dark house.
“What do you know about Laura?””
Patricia exhaled.
“More than I wish I did.””
“Can we meet?””
“Yes. Tomorrow morning. But I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“My brother didn't die because of a simple accident.””
Marcus went completely still.
“What are you saying?””
“I can't prove what happened to Robert. But I know he was trying to expose a financial arrangement involving Adrian and Laura before he died.””
Marcus felt a chill travel down his spine.
“What kind of arrangement?””
“Insurance policies. Property transfers. False signatures.””
He closed his eyes.
The same pattern.
Patricia continued.
“Robert thought he was signing documents to protect his family. Instead, he was signing away control of everything he owned.””
Marcus looked at the forged papers beside him.
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because Laura has started asking questions about your wife.””
Marcus swallowed.
“What questions?””
“Whether Vanessa has managed to get you to sign the insurance documents.””
He felt sick.
“Patricia, I haven't signed anything.””
“Good.””
There was a pause.
Then she whispered:
“Please don't let Adrian into your house.””
The call ended.
The following morning, Marcus met Patricia Bennett at a coffee shop near the courthouse.
She arrived carrying a thick folder.
She was in her late fifties, with silver hair and a tired expression.
“You look like Robert,” she said.
Marcus frowned.
“I never met him.””
“It's the eyes. He had the same expression when he finally understood what was happening.””
She sat down.
Marcus ordered coffee.
“Tell me everything.””
Patricia opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of insurance policies, property records, and emails.
She pointed to one document.
“This was Robert's original life insurance policy.””
Marcus studied it.
The beneficiary was Laura.
“Nothing unusual,” he said.
“Look at the change request.””
She handed him another page.
The beneficiary had been changed to a company connected to Adrian.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“Adrian again.””
“Yes. He was involved in Robert's financial affairs before Robert died.””
“Was Laura having an affair with him?””
Patricia shook her head.
“I don't know. But Robert suspected something.””
She opened an email.
It had been written by Robert shortly before his death.
I don't trust Adrian anymore. Laura says everything is legal, but the numbers don't make sense. If anything happens to me, make sure someone looks at the insurance changes.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“When did he send this?””
“Three days before the accident.””
He looked up.
“Did you give this to the police?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“Nothing. They said there wasn't enough evidence to establish wrongdoing.””
Patricia closed the folder.
“I spent six years trying to understand what happened. Then I discovered that Adrian was working with another woman.””
“Vanessa.””
Patricia nodded.
“I recognized her name when Laura mentioned it.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Why would Laura help Vanessa?””
“Because Laura believes she can control people through money. And Adrian knows how to make paperwork look legitimate.””
Marcus stared at the table.
“Did Robert have children?””
“Yes. A daughter.””
“Where is she now?””
“Living with me.””
“Does she know what happened?””
Patricia's eyes filled.
“She knows her father died. She doesn't know all the details.””
Marcus looked away.
He thought of Maya.
He imagined her growing up without him because someone had forged a signature and manipulated a system.
He couldn't allow it.
Patricia reached across the table.
“Marcus, I don't know whether Vanessa understands what she's involved in. But I do know that Adrian and Laura have used the same methods before.””
He swallowed.
“Can you give me copies of everything?””
Patricia nodded.
Then her phone vibrated.
She glanced at it.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward him.
A message from Laura.
I know where you are. Don't make the mistake of helping another man lose everything.
Patricia quickly locked her phone.
Marcus stood.
“We need to leave.””
But before they reached the door, Patricia grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
“What?””
She opened her folder again and removed a small photograph.
It showed Laura, Adrian, Vanessa, and another man standing outside a restaurant.
Marcus recognized Vanessa immediately.
The photograph was dated eight months earlier.
But the fourth man was unfamiliar.
“Who is that?”” Marcus asked.
Patricia swallowed.
“His name is Daniel Reeves.””
Marcus froze.
The same Daniel who had helped arrange Maya's school transfer.
Patricia nodded.
“He worked with Robert before the accident.””
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Suddenly, the entire arrangement looked much bigger than an affair.
Adrian, Laura, Daniel, and Vanessa had been connected long before Maya's school application.
And Robert Bennett had apparently discovered something about them.
Then Patricia said something that changed everything.
“Marcus, there's another reason I contacted you.””
“What?””
“Robert left behind a hidden recording. I found it last week.””
May you like
She pulled out a small USB drive.
“And I think it contains Vanessa's voice.””
