Chapter 9: The Marriage That Was Built on a Lie
I didn’t drive home.
I didn’t go back inside.
I didn’t answer Julian’s calls.
For the first time since I met him, I made a decision without asking what he would think.
I drove.
No destination.
Just distance.
I needed space between myself and the house where every wall now felt like it was hiding something.
The old phone sat on the passenger seat.
The device that had become my only connection to the truth.
I kept looking at Vanessa’s last message.
*He knew Julian before you ever met him.*
That sentence repeated in my head.
Over and over.
Julian knew my father.
Not because of me.
Not because of my marriage.
Before.
I pulled into an empty parking lot near a closed shopping center and stopped the car.
Then I called Vanessa.
Not from my phone.
From the old one.
The call rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
“Claire?””
Her voice was quieter than I expected.
Younger.
More nervous.
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had imagined what a sister would be like.
Someone who shared my blood.
Someone who would understand parts of me no one else could.
I never imagined my first conversation with her would happen because my husband was trying to destroy us both.
“Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.””
The apology surprised me.
“For what?””
“For everything.””
I looked out the windshield.
“You didn’t know me.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“But I knew enough.””
I waited.
“Tell me the truth.””
A long silence followed.
Then she said:
“I met Julian six years ago.””
My fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
Six years.
Julian and I had been married for seven.
“You met him before our wedding?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He found me.””
I swallowed.
“Why?””
“Because of our father.””
I already knew the answer.
But hearing it still hurt.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Our father created a trust after my mother died. He wanted to make sure both of his daughters were protected.””
I stared ahead.
“My father never told me about you.””
“I know.””
“How do you know?””
“Because Julian told me.””
My chest tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He said you knew about me.””
I froze.
“He told you I knew?””
“Yes.””
A bitter laugh escaped.
“So he lied to both of us.””
“Yes.””
The simplicity of her answer hurt.
Because it was true.
Julian didn’t choose sides.
He created a battlefield.
“What did he want from you?””
Vanessa was quiet.
Then:
“The trust required both daughters to approve any transfer of control.””
I nodded slowly.
“So he needed your signature.””
“Yes.””
“And mine.””
“Yes.””
The documents.
The fake witness.
The paperwork.
Everything.
“He needed us to cooperate,” Vanessa continued.
“But we didn’t.””
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
Her voice became softer.
“He changed his plan.””
I waited.
“He decided if he couldn’t get both signatures willingly, he would make it appear like he already had them.””
My stomach turned.
The forged documents.
The fake agreements.
The stolen signatures.
“He created a fake story.””
“Yes.””
“Where I was unstable.””
“Yes.””
“Where you were involved.””
“Yes.””
“Where he was protecting everyone.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
It was so carefully designed.
Everyone had a role.
Everyone had a reason to distrust someone else.
Julian wasn’t just lying.
He was directing a play.
And we were all characters.
“Why did you help him at first?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
When she did, her voice was full of shame.
“Because I believed him.””
I stayed silent.
“He found me when I was struggling. He knew things about our father that I didn’t know. He told me he was trying to protect what our father built.””
“And you believed him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he showed me documents.””
I laughed quietly.
Of course.
Documents.
Julian’s favorite weapon.
“He showed me your name,” Vanessa continued.
“My name?””
“Yes.””
“What did it say?””
“That you had already agreed to transfer control.””
My hands went cold.
“So you thought I betrayed you.””
“Yes.””
“And I thought you betrayed me.””
“Yes.””
Neither of us spoke.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Julian had done something crueler than stealing money.
He had taken two people who should have been family and made them enemies.
“Why did you leave?””
Vanessa exhaled.
“Because I found the original documents.””
“The real ones?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“They proved everything Julian showed me was fake.””
I looked at the dashboard.
“Where are they?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“I can’t tell you yet.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Julian knows I have them.””
“How?””
“Because Michael found me.””
My body went still.
“Michael?””
“His attorney.””
“How did he find you?””
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa added:
“But Claire, there’s something else.””
I waited.
“Michael wasn’t just Julian’s attorney.””
“What do you mean?””
“He worked with our father.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What?””
“Michael was part of the original trust arrangement.””
My mind raced.
So many names.
So many connections.
Julian.
Michael.
My father.
The trust.
The hidden company.
The past I never knew existed.
“Why would my father trust him?””
“Because he didn’t know what Michael was doing.””
A chill moved through me.
“What did Michael do?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then:
“He changed documents.””
My heart pounded.
“Before or after my father died?””
“Both.””
Silence.
“Vanessa…”
“I know.””
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“That’s why Julian wanted those documents destroyed.””
My grip tightened.
“Why?””
“Because they prove Julian didn’t create the plan.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa answered:
“It means someone else started this.””
I sat there in silence.
Someone else.
Not Julian.
Not only Julian.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Vanessa.””
“I’m serious.””
She sounded afraid.
“I found one document with a name on it.””
“What name?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your father’s business partner.””
I frowned.
“My father’s business partner died years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then who?””
Vanessa went quiet.
Finally:
“The person who inherited everything after he died.””
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
“Who inherited it?””
Before she answered, another sound came through the phone.
A door closing.
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
“Where are you?””
“Claire, I have to go.””
“No.””
I stood up.
“Don’t hang up.””
“I need to move.””
“Vanessa.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Listen to me.””
I stopped.
“Do not go back to your house.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Julian knows you’re looking for answers.””
“How?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I saw him.””
“Where?””
“At the place where I was hiding.””
My heart raced.
“He found you?””
“Yes.””
“Are you safe?””
Another pause.
Then:
“For now.””
The call crackled.
“Vanessa?””
Her voice dropped.
“Claire, there’s something you need to understand.””
“What?””
“Julian didn’t marry you because of the trust.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He didn’t know you had access until later.””
“Then why?””
The silence that followed was the longest one yet.
Then she said:
“He married you because your father told him to.””
My blood ran cold.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I saw the letter.””
“What letter?””
“From your father.””
I couldn’t speak.
“He wrote it years before he died.””
My hands shook.
“What did it say?””
Vanessa whispered:
“He said Julian was the only person he trusted to protect you.””
The world tilted.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
Julian wasn’t the enemy?
Or was that exactly the trick?
A man trusted to protect me.
A man who later betrayed me.
My phone went silent.
“Vanessa?””
No answer.
“Vanessa!””
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then I noticed something.
The old phone had received one more message.
Not from Vanessa.
From Julian.
My heart stopped.
Because the message wasn’t angry.
It wasn’t threatening.
It was calm.
Too calm.
*Claire, I know you talked to her.*
Another message arrived.
*And I know she told you about your father.*
I stared.
Then the final message appeared.
*But she didn’t tell you the whole truth.*
I waited.
A fourth message appeared.
*Your father didn’t ask me to protect you from the world.*
My fingers went cold.
May you like
The next line appeared.
*He asked me to protect you from himself.*
