Amused

Chapter 1: The Woman in His Arms

“Everything is ready. That idiot is about to lose everything.””

I heard my husband say those words at Denver International Airport while I was standing less than twenty feet away, holding the coffee I had bought for him that morning.

The strangest part wasn’t seeing Julian with another woman.

It was hearing how easily he spoke about ruining me.

I had gone to the airport for the most ordinary reason in the world.

My best friend, Rachel, was flying to Chicago for a three-day marketing conference, and I wanted to be there before she left. She had been beside me through everything—the loss of my father, the stress of my first job, the exhausting years when Julian and I were trying to build a life together.

She was the person who always told me the truth, even when I didn’t want to hear it.

“Promise me you’ll stop working so hard and actually sleep this week,” she had texted me the night before.

I laughed when I read it.

“Promise me you’ll stop pretending you don’t love hotel breakfasts,” I replied.

That morning, I woke up early, stopped by Julian’s favorite coffee shop, and bought his usual order out of habit.

Large black coffee.

Two sugars.

No cream.

Even after seven years of marriage, I still remembered little things like that.

I didn’t know that by lunchtime, I would be questioning whether I ever truly knew the man I married.

The airport was crowded, filled with rolling suitcases, hurried footsteps, and the constant announcement of departing flights echoing through the massive terminals.

I was standing near the security entrance, scrolling through my phone and waiting for Rachel to arrive from the parking shuttle, when I saw him.

At first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Julian.

My husband.

The man who had kissed me goodbye two hours earlier before leaving for a “client meeting.””

He was standing near the charging stations.

But he wasn’t alone.

A tall brunette woman in a cream-colored coat was pressed against him.

Not standing beside him.

Not talking professionally.

Wrapped around him.

Her hand rested against his chest like it belonged there.

Like she had done it a hundred times.

I stopped walking.

The coffee cup nearly slipped from my fingers.

Julian was laughing.

Not his polite business laugh.

Not the one he used when he wanted to impress investors.

This was the laugh I used to think belonged only to me.

The woman looked up at him.

He lowered his head.

And kissed her.

Right there.

In the middle of the airport.

No hesitation.

No fear.

No guilt.

My body reacted before my mind could.

I stepped backward.

One step.

Then another.

I moved behind a large concrete pillar near the charging stations, where several travelers were sitting with their laptops and phones.

My heart was beating so loudly I was sure someone could hear it.

I wanted to run toward him.

I wanted to scream his name.

I wanted to throw the coffee in my hand directly into his face.

But something stopped me.

Maybe it was the way he looked.

Julian didn’t look like a man caught in a mistake.

He looked confident.

Prepared.

Like he was exactly where he wanted to be.

Then the woman spoke.

“So it’s finally happening?””

Her voice was soft, almost playful.

Julian glanced around before answering.

“Yes.””

I held my breath.

The woman touched his arm.

“And you’re sure everything is taken care of?””

Julian smiled.

“Everything is in place.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

The woman leaned closer.

“What about her?””

Julian looked down at the floor for a moment.

Then he said the sentence that made the entire airport disappear around me.

“That idiot is about to lose everything.””

The words felt like ice sliding down my spine.

That idiot.

He meant me.

The woman gave a quiet laugh.

“And she still thinks you’re working late because of your company?””

Julian shrugged.

“She believes whatever I tell her.””

I felt something inside me crack.

Not because he was cheating.

Not only because of that.

It was the cruelty.

The way he talked about me like I was a problem to solve.

A person too foolish to notice what was happening.

The woman smiled.

“And she won’t see it unfold?””

Julian shook his head.

“No. By the time she understands, it’ll already be over.””

I looked down at my wedding ring.

Seven years.

Seven years of believing I had chosen the right person.

Seven years of defending him when friends said he was becoming distant.

Seven years of telling myself that stress from building his business was the reason he stayed late.

I remembered every excuse.

Every missed dinner.

Every weekend phone call he stepped outside to take.

Every time he turned his screen away when I entered the room.

Suddenly, all those moments rearranged themselves into something darker.

But there was something else.

Something that bothered me more than the affair.

The word he used.

Everything.

Not everyone says “you’ll lose everything” when they’re talking about a divorce.

That sounded planned.

Calculated.

Financial.

I watched Julian adjust the leather briefcase tucked under his arm.

My stomach dropped.

I knew that briefcase.

He only carried it when something important was happening.

Contracts.

Legal meetings.

Business negotiations.

And then I remembered something from three weeks earlier.

The night he asked me to sign documents for his new company.

We were sitting at the kitchen table.

He had poured me a glass of wine and placed a stack of papers in front of me.

“Just routine paperwork,” he said.

I looked over the pages.

There were so many legal terms that my eyes blurred.

“Do I need a lawyer to look at this?””

He smiled.

Not angrily.

Not suspiciously.

Just enough to make me feel unreasonable for asking.

“Sweetheart, it’s nothing complicated.””

He reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

“You trust me, don’t you?””

And I had signed.

Because I loved him.

Because I believed marriage meant believing the person beside you.

Now, hiding behind that airport pillar, I wondered what exactly I had signed.

The woman beside Julian spoke again.

“What if she finds out?””

Julian didn’t even look worried.

“She won’t.””

“How can you be so sure?””

He smiled.

“Because she never thinks I’m capable of doing something like this.””

My chest tightened.

That was the part that hurt the most.

He was right.

I had never imagined him as someone who could destroy me.

But now I was watching him prepare to do exactly that.

My hand slowly moved toward my phone.

I opened the recording app.

My fingers trembled.

I pressed record.

The small red circle appeared on the screen.

I kept my phone lowered beside my leg, pretending to check messages while capturing every word.

Every pause.

Every laugh.

Every piece of evidence.

Julian continued speaking.

“The documents are already prepared. Once the transfer goes through, there’s nothing she can do.””

My breath stopped.

Transfer.

Documents.

There it was.

The confirmation I needed.

The woman smiled.

“And the house?””

Julian answered immediately.

“Handled.””

The airport noise returned all at once.

The announcements.

The footsteps.

The suitcase wheels.

Everything around me became painfully clear.

The house.

My house.

The one we bought together.

The one I spent years helping pay for.

The one where I thought we would grow old.

He wasn’t just hiding another woman.

He was building a way to erase me.

I wanted to confront him.

I wanted to step out and watch his face collapse when he realized I had heard everything.

But then I noticed something.

Julian’s expression.

He wasn’t nervous.

He wasn’t guilty.

He was certain.

Men like Julian prepared for fights they expected to win.

If I confronted him now, he would have time to destroy evidence.

He would deny everything.

He would call me emotional.

Paranoid.

Unstable.

And the worst part?

He was probably prepared for that too.

So I stayed hidden.

I listened.

I recorded.

And for the first time in seven years, I stopped being the woman who trusted him blindly.

I became the woman who was watching him carefully.

Rachel texted me.

“Almost at the terminal! Where are you?””

I stared at the message.

Then I looked back at my husband.

The man I thought I knew.

The stranger who was planning my downfall.

My fingers moved across the screen.

“I’m here. Just saw something interesting.””

I didn’t know yet what Julian had planned.

I didn’t know how much he had already taken from me.

But I knew one thing.

He thought I was too naive to fight back.

And that was his first mistake.

Because while Julian was standing there celebrating my destruction…

I was already making my next move.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His smile disappeared.

The woman noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

Julian stared at the caller ID.

And when he answered, I saw the color drain from his face.

Because the name on his screen was someone I knew.

Someone who should have been impossible to contact.

Someone who was supposed to be on my side.

“Hello?”” Julian whispered.

A pause.

May you like

Then his expression changed.

“Wait… how did you get those documents?””
