Amused

Chapter 3: The Signature I Didn’t Remember Giving

The first thing I noticed was the silence.

Not the kind of silence that comes from peace.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

I sat in my car, staring at the document attached to the email, unable to move.

My name was printed across the top.

My address.

My company information.

My signature.

Everything looked real.

Too real.

“Claire?””

Emily’s voice came through the phone.

I had forgotten she was still there.

“Claire, are you with me?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“What did you find?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

My eyes stayed locked on the screen.

The document title burned into my mind.

Emergency Transfer Authorization Agreement.

I had never heard those words before.

But Julian had.

He knew exactly what it meant.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

“I need you to look at something,” I finally said.

“Send it to me.””

I forwarded the email.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

I listened to the distant sounds of the airport outside my car.

Engines.

People walking.

Announcements echoing through speakers.

The world continued moving like mine hadn’t just changed.

Then Emily spoke.

“Claire.””

Her voice was different now.

More serious.

“Where did you get this?””

“Someone emailed it to me.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Have you opened the attachment?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Did you sign this?””

My throat tightened.

“I don’t remember.””

Emily didn’t respond immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Emily was the kind of person who always had an answer.

She had been the student who corrected professors when they made mistakes.

The person who negotiated apartment leases while everyone else was afraid to ask questions.

If she was silent, it meant she was thinking carefully.

“Claire,” she said slowly, “I need you to tell me exactly what happened when you signed this.””

I closed my eyes.

The memory came back instantly.

Three weeks earlier.

Our kitchen.

The rain hitting the windows.

Julian sitting across from me.

He had looked tired that night.

Concerned.

Like he was carrying the weight of the world.

Which was exactly why I had believed him.

“I need your signature for some business restructuring,” he had said.

I remember laughing.

“More paperwork?””

He smiled.

“Unfortunately.””

He had placed a stack of documents in front of me.

“Nothing complicated.””

I flipped through the pages.

There were paragraphs filled with legal language.

Terms I didn’t understand.

“Shouldn’t we have someone review this?””

He looked surprised.

Not angry.

Just surprised.

Like my question was unnecessary.

“Claire, it’s my company.””

I looked up.

“And I’m your wife.””

He smiled.

“That’s why I’m asking you.””

Then he reached across the table.

“You trust me, don’t you?””

Those words.

Those exact words.

They were the reason I signed.

Because I trusted him.

I trusted the man who slept beside me.

The man who knew my fears.

The man who promised me forever.

I told Emily everything.

When I finished, she was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Did Julian ever explain why he needed your signature?””

“No.””

“Did he give you copies of what you signed?””

I looked down.

“No.””

“Claire.””

The way she said my name made my stomach tighten.

“What?””

“You may have signed away control over assets connected to the business.””

I stared at the document.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I need to review the entire agreement before I tell you exactly what happened.””

“Can you tell me anything?””

Emily hesitated.

“I can tell you this isn’t routine paperwork.””

My hands shook.

I looked around the parking garage.

Suddenly, I felt trapped.

Like the walls were closing in.

“What should I do?””

“First, do not confront him.””

The answer came immediately.

“Why?””

“Because if he’s already making moves, he may react by protecting himself.””

“I already recorded him talking about it.””

Emily went silent.

“You recorded him?””

“Yes.””

“Send me that too.””

I found the recording and uploaded it.

A minute later, my phone rang again.

Emily.

“Claire.””

Her voice was lower.

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“If this is what it sounds like, Julian isn’t just hiding something from you.””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“He’s building a case against you.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

“A case?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To make his actions look justified.””

I looked back at the document.

The signature.

The date.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

The secret meetings.

The late nights.

The woman at the airport.

The attorney.

The paperwork.

Julian wasn’t planning a breakup.

He was preparing a takeover.

A movement.

A strategy.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Julian.

I froze.

*Where are you?*

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

*You left the airport without saying goodbye. Is everything okay?*

I almost laughed.

Almost.

He was pretending.

Still pretending.

The man who had just been planning my destruction was texting me like a loving husband.

Emily noticed my silence.

“Who is that?””

“Julian.””

“Don’t answer yet.””

“I have to.””

“No.””

Her voice became firm.

“Claire, listen to me. Right now, you have something he doesn’t know you have.””

“What?””

“Time.””

I looked at the message again.

Time.

That was my only advantage.

Julian thought I was unaware.

That meant every move he made next could reveal more.

I typed a response.

My fingers hovered above the keyboard.

Then I wrote:

*Sorry. I got overwhelmed at the airport. Rachel was leaving, and I had a lot on my mind. I’m heading home now.*

I stared at the message.

It was the first lie I had ever told my husband.

And strangely, it felt easier than telling the truth.

I pressed send.

Three dots appeared almost immediately.

He was typing.

*I love you. We need to talk tonight.*

I read the words over and over.

We need to talk.

A warning.

Not a conversation.

A planned discussion.

I knew Julian.

He liked controlling the environment.

He liked choosing the time.

The place.

The words.

He would not have that advantage tonight.

Not anymore.

“Emily?””

“Yes?””

“I need you to help me.””

“I already am.””

“No.””

I looked at the document again.

“I need to know everything.””

A pause.

Then she answered.

“Send me every file you have. Every email. Every message. Everything.””

“I will.””

“And Claire?””

“Yes?””

“Check your accounts.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“If he has access to your business documents, there’s a chance he has already started moving things.””

I immediately opened my banking app.

My fingers moved quickly.

Checking.

Savings.

Joint account.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then I opened the business account.

My heart stopped.

There was a pending transaction.

A large one.

Scheduled for tomorrow morning.

I stared at the screen.

The amount was almost half of our company reserve.

The recipient name made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t a bank.

It wasn’t a vendor.

It wasn’t a client.

It was a private holding company.

One I had never heard of.

I took a screenshot.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was from my home security system.

A login alert.

Someone had accessed the account.

Someone using a device I didn’t recognize.

I checked the timestamp.

Ten minutes earlier.

While I was sitting in the airport.

While Julian was standing there with another woman.

Someone had entered my home security system.

I whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Emily heard me.

“What happened?””

I looked at the screen.

“I think someone accessed my house.””

“Who?””

I didn’t answer.

Because deep down, I already knew.

My front door camera had recorded the person who logged in.

I opened the video.

The footage loaded.

A man stood outside my house.

He wasn’t trying to break in.

He wasn’t hiding.

He was holding a key.

My key.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

Because the person standing at my front door wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone Julian trusted.

Someone who had been inside my home many times.

Someone who knew exactly where we kept everything.

The video name appeared at the bottom of the screen.

*Michael Hayes — Attorney Access.*

And beneath it was a timestamp.

May you like

The exact moment Julian said:

“Everything is ready.””
