Chapter 2: The First Piece of Evidence
Julian’s face changed before he even finished the call.
I had seen him angry before.
I had seen him frustrated.
I had seen him stressed after losing a client or arguing with a business partner.
But I had never seen fear cross his face.
Not real fear.
The woman beside him noticed too.
She leaned closer, her confidence fading.
“What happened?”” she whispered.
Julian lifted one finger, telling her to wait.
I pressed my phone tighter against my palm, keeping the recording active.
“Hello?”” Julian said again, lowering his voice.
“How did you get those documents?””
A pause.
His eyes moved around the airport.
For one second, I thought he might look directly at me.
I held my breath.
But he turned away.
“No,” he said.
“That’s impossible.””
Another pause.
Then his jaw tightened.
“You need to listen to me carefully.””
The woman crossed her arms.
She looked annoyed now.
Not worried.
Annoyed.
Like she was used to Julian controlling situations and couldn’t understand why this one was slipping away.
I studied her face.
The woman I had heard about countless times.
The “client.””
The person Julian mentioned whenever I asked why he was traveling so much.
“Her company is important.””
“She’s difficult to work with.””
“She’s demanding.””
Every excuse had sounded reasonable at the time.
Now I wondered how many lies could fit inside one marriage.
Julian finally ended the call.
He immediately grabbed the woman’s arm and pulled her a few steps away from the crowd.
I followed carefully, staying behind the flow of travelers.
I needed to hear more.
The woman spoke first.
“Who was that?””
Julian looked irritated.
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It clearly matters.””
“You don’t understand.””
She laughed softly.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Pretend you’re the only one who knows what’s happening.””
Julian stared at her.
For the first time, I saw something beneath his confidence.
Pressure.
The woman stepped closer.
“Julian, you told me everything was handled.””
“It is.””
“Then why did someone just call you about the documents?””
My stomach tightened.
Documents.
Again.
I lifted my phone slightly, making sure the microphone was still pointed toward them.
Julian rubbed his forehead.
“Because someone got careless.””
The woman’s expression changed.
“Someone?””
He looked at her.
“Don’t start.””
“No. I want to know.””
Her voice became colder.
“You promised me this was clean.””
Julian glanced around.
“You need to calm down.””
She smiled without humor.
“That’s what you always say when things are falling apart.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
They weren’t just having an affair.
They were partners.
Whatever they were planning, she knew about it.
Maybe she was part of it.
Maybe she was the reason.
I felt my fingers go numb.
My first instinct was still the same.
Expose them.
Walk out.
Make them feel the same shock I was feeling.
But then I remembered the sentence Julian had said.
“Once the transfer goes through, there’s nothing she can do.””
That sentence mattered.
If I reacted emotionally, I might lose the chance to protect myself.
I needed answers.
Not revenge.
Answers.
My phone buzzed suddenly.
I froze.
Rachel.
I had forgotten she was waiting for me.
The vibration lasted only a second, but Julian immediately looked around.
My heart stopped.
He scanned the area.
I quickly lowered my head and pretended to be reading a message.
A few seconds passed.
Then he turned away.
I released the breath I didn’t realize I was holding.
I opened Rachel’s message.
“Where are you? Boarding starts soon.””
I typed back.
“Running late. I’ll find you.””
Then I paused.
Should I tell her?
Should I tell anyone?
The old version of me would have called Rachel immediately.
The old version of me would have needed someone to tell me I wasn’t imagining things.
But the woman standing behind that pillar wasn’t the same person who walked into the airport twenty minutes earlier.
That woman trusted too easily.
This woman was collecting proof.
I closed the message.
Then Julian spoke again.
“We need to leave separately.””
The woman frowned.
“Why?””
“Because someone may be watching.””
My heartbeat changed.
Someone may be watching.
He had no idea how right he was.
The woman looked around nervously.
“Do you think she knows?””
Julian went silent.
A terrible silence.
The kind that reveals more than words.
Finally, he said:
“No.””
Then he added:
“But if she does…”
He didn’t finish.
The woman looked at him.
“If she does what?””
Julian’s voice dropped.
“She’ll lose everything before she understands what happened.””
A chill moved through me.
That wasn’t a threat.
It was a plan.
A countdown.
I ended the recording.
Not because I had enough.
Because I needed to protect what I already had.
I immediately backed away.
I walked through the airport without looking behind me.
Every step felt unreal.
My husband was ten feet away, planning to take my home, my money, and possibly my future.
And I was walking away like I had never seen him.
Like my entire world had not just cracked open.
I found Rachel near the departure gates.
She was holding her passport and looking confused.
“There you are,” she said.
“I was about to call you.””
I forced a smile.
“Sorry. Something came up.””
Rachel studied my face.
She knew me too well.
“What happened?””
“Nothing.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t lie to me.””
I looked away.
For a second, I almost broke.
I almost told her everything.
But then I remembered something else.
Three weeks earlier.
The paperwork.
The kitchen table.
The way Julian watched me sign.
I needed to know what I had agreed to before I accused him.
“I’m just tired,” I said.
Rachel didn’t believe me.
But she didn’t push.
Instead, she hugged me.
“Whatever it is, you know you can call me, right?””
I nodded.
“I know.””
She pulled away.
“You look like you just saw a ghost.””
I swallowed.
“Maybe I did.””
She laughed softly, thinking I was joking.
I wasn’t.
After Rachel went through security, I stood there watching her disappear into the crowd.
Then I walked outside.
I needed privacy.
I needed to think.
I sat in my car in the parking garage and replayed the recording.
The sound of Julian’s voice filled the empty space.
“That idiot is about to lose everything.””
I closed my eyes.
Hearing it again hurt worse.
Because now I wasn’t just remembering.
I was analyzing.
I listened carefully.
The documents.
The transfer.
The house.
The woman.
Then I heard something I had missed before.
A name.
A name Julian mentioned quietly when talking about the paperwork.
“Once Michael finishes the final review, it’s done.””
Michael.
My stomach dropped.
Michael wasn’t a stranger.
Michael was Julian’s attorney.
The same attorney who had handled our business paperwork.
The same man Julian recommended when we created our first company account.
I immediately opened my contacts.
My finger hovered over Michael’s name.
Should I call?
No.
Not yet.
If Michael was involved, calling him would warn them.
I needed someone outside Julian’s circle.
Someone who could look at the documents without being connected to him.
I searched through my phone.
Then I found a number I hadn’t used in years.
A woman I knew from college.
Someone who had become a corporate attorney.
Someone Julian had never met.
I stared at the number.
Then I pressed call.
She answered after three rings.
“Hello?””
Her voice sounded exactly the same.
Calm.
Professional.
“Emily?””
“Yes?””
“It’s Claire.””
A pause.
Then warmth entered her voice.
“Claire? Oh my God. It’s been forever. Is everything okay?””
I looked through the windshield at the airport traffic moving outside.
My reflection stared back at me.
I barely recognized myself.
“No,” I whispered.
“Actually, I think my husband is trying to destroy me.””
Silence.
Then Emily’s voice changed.
“What happened?””
I opened my mouth.
But before I could answer, another notification appeared on my phone.
A new email.
From an unknown sender.
The subject line contained only four words.
*You Need To See This.*
My hand froze.
I looked at the screen.
Then slowly opened it.
There was one attachment.
A scanned document.
The first page showed my name.
My signature.
And a date from three weeks ago.
The day Julian asked me to sign “routine paperwork.””
But what made my blood run cold wasn’t my signature.
It was the title at the top of the document.
*Emergency Transfer Authorization Agreement.*
And beneath it was a line I had never seen before.
May you like
A line that explained exactly why Julian was so confident I would lose everything.
Because I had already given him permission.
