Chapter 7: The Secret Family Connection
For several seconds, I convinced myself I had read it wrong.
I stared at the screen.
Then I blinked.
Then I read the message again.
*She’s your sister.*
The words didn’t make sense.
Not emotionally.
Not logically.
Not in any world I understood.
My sister.
The woman at the airport.
The woman whose hand had been resting on my husband’s chest.
The woman Julian called “a client.””
I typed with shaking fingers.
*What are you talking about?*
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
The waiting felt worse than the message itself.
Finally:
*I’m sorry. I didn’t know how to tell you.*
My chest tightened.
*Tell me what?*
The typing bubble appeared.
Stopped.
Appeared again.
Then:
*Claire, your father had another child.*
I stared at the phone.
The backyard suddenly felt too quiet.
The wind moved through the trees.
Somewhere nearby, a car drove past.
Normal things.
A normal night.
Except my entire understanding of my family had just been ripped apart.
I typed:
*No.*
A simple word.
A refusal.
Because sometimes the truth arrives too suddenly, and your mind rejects it before your heart can even process it.
*No, Rachel. That’s not possible.*
Her response came quickly.
*I know what you’re thinking.*
*You’re wrong.*
*I wish I was.*
I stood up from the car.
My legs felt weak.
I walked a few steps, then stopped.
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man whose old photographs were still sitting in a box in my closet.
The man I had spent years missing.
Another child?
Another family?
I wanted to be angry.
But I didn’t even know who I was angry at.
A man who was gone?
A sister I never knew existed?
A husband who knew this secret before me?
I typed:
*How does Julian know?*
Rachel answered:
*Because I think he found out before you did.*
My stomach dropped.
Of course.
Of course he did.
Julian never discovered information accidentally.
He collected it.
Used it.
Turned it into leverage.
*How?*
Rachel sent:
*I found old documents in his office.*
*Documents about your father.*
I looked toward the house again.
Julian was no longer visible through the window.
That bothered me more.
When I couldn’t see him, I didn’t know what he was doing.
*What documents?*
Rachel replied:
*A birth certificate.*
Then:
*And a private investigation report.*
I closed my eyes.
Julian had hired someone to investigate my family.
Why?
The answer came before I even asked.
Because of money.
Because of inheritance.
Because of control.
But there was something I still didn’t understand.
*Why would my sister help him?*
Rachel didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Then:
*I don’t think she knows everything.*
I frowned.
*What does that mean?*
*I think Julian lied to her too.*
I looked at the message.
That was possible.
It was exactly what Julian did.
He created different versions of the truth for different people.
He made everyone believe they were on his side.
Then he used them.
I typed:
*What is her name?*
The answer came.
*Vanessa.*
I whispered the name.
Vanessa.
A stranger.
My sister.
My husband’s secret partner.
A person who shared my blood but had somehow become part of the plan to destroy me.
I felt sick.
A sound came from the house.
The back door opening.
I froze.
Julian stepped outside.
“Claire?””
I quickly locked the phone screen.
He walked toward me slowly.
Concerned.
Gentle.
The performance was back.
“You’ve been out here a while.””
I forced myself to turn.
“I needed some air.””
He looked at me.
Studied me.
“You’re shaking.””
“I’m cold.””
He removed his jacket.
A gesture I had seen a thousand times.
A gesture that used to make me feel loved.
Now it felt like a costume.
“You don’t have to pretend with me,” he said.
The irony almost made me laugh.
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
He stepped closer.
“I know today has been overwhelming.””
“Yes.””
“I know you’re confused.””
I watched his face carefully.
“You know a lot, don’t you?””
A tiny pause.
There.
Only half a second.
But I saw it.
“What does that mean?””
I shrugged.
“Nothing.””
He smiled sadly.
“You’re angry.””
“Should I be?””
“I think you have every right to be.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
He was acting like he was comforting me.
Like he wasn’t the reason I was standing in the dark questioning my entire life.
“I found out someone close to me has been lying,” he said.
My eyes narrowed.
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
He looked toward the house.
Then back at me.
“Rachel.””
There it was.
Again.
The name.
The target.
He wanted me focused on her.
I played along.
“What did she do?””
Julian sighed.
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked hurt.
“You really think I would lie to you?””
The old Claire would have apologized.
The old Claire would have reached for his hand.
The old Claire would have believed the sadness in his eyes.
But I wasn’t the old Claire anymore.
“I think you’re very good at making people believe things.””
His expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
“You don’t mean that.””
“I do.””
Silence.
Then he said:
“Claire, I’m trying to protect you.””
I almost smiled.
“From what?””
“From people who don’t care about you.””
“And you do?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did you investigate my father?””
The question hit him like a physical blow.
His eyes changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
He knew.
He knew I knew something.
“How did you—”
He stopped himself.
Too late.
I had my answer.
“You did investigate him.””
Julian became quiet.
Then he looked away.
“I didn’t want you involved.””
“Involved in what?””
He didn’t answer.
“Julian.””
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
“What did you find?””
He finally looked at me.
And for the first time all day, I saw something real.
Fear.
Not because he had been caught cheating.
Not because I knew about the documents.
Because I had reached something he wasn’t prepared for.
“You need to understand something,” he said.
“What?””
“Your father left behind things you don’t know about.””
I stared at him.
“What things?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Money.””
The word landed heavily.
“How much?””
“That’s not the point.””
“It is the point.””
He looked frustrated.
“Claire, you don’t understand what’s happening.””
“Then explain it.””
He looked at the house.
Then lowered his voice.
“Your father had a second family.””
My heart pounded.
I pretended to be shocked.
Not because I wasn’t.
But because I couldn’t let him know how much I already knew.
“And Vanessa?””
His face went completely still.
There it was.
The confirmation.
He knew her name.
“How do you know that name?””
I didn’t answer.
He took a step toward me.
“Claire.””
I watched him carefully.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew about her.””
His silence was enough.
“You knew I had a sister.””
“I found out.””
“When?””
He looked away.
“Months ago.””
Months.
He had known for months.
While we ate dinner.
While we planned vacations.
While he kissed me goodbye.
He knew there was a missing piece of my family.
And he kept it from me.
“Why?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because I needed to know if she was a threat.””
A threat.
Not a person.
Not family.
A threat.
“And what did you decide?””
He looked at me.
“She was useful.””
The word slipped out.
A mistake.
A terrible one.
I felt my entire body go cold.
Useful.
Not loved.
Not trusted.
Useful.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then his voice changed.
“What do you mean she’s gone?””
I looked at him.
Gone?
Who?
He turned away.
“No. Find her.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Don’t let Claire talk to her.””
My heart stopped.
He looked back at me.
And in that moment, he realized something.
He had said too much.
I didn’t need proof anymore.
I needed the truth.
And the truth was finally afraid of me.
When he ended the call, I asked quietly:
“Who was that?””
Julian didn’t answer.
“Julian.””
His jaw tightened.
Then he said the one sentence that confirmed everything.
“Vanessa disappeared.””
I stared at him.
My secret sister.
The woman who might have answers.
The woman Julian had been using.
Gone.
Then my phone buzzed inside my pocket.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I looked down.
One sentence appeared.
*Claire, if you’re reading this, I escaped before Julian could stop me.*
My heart raced.
Another message followed.
*I know what he did to your father.*
May you like
And then the final line appeared.
*But you need to know the truth before he finds me.*
