Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in My Father’s Name

I read Vanessa’s message until the words stopped looking real.

*I know what he did to your father.*

Fourteen words.

A lifetime of questions hidden inside them.

My father’s death had always been something I accepted without questioning.

He had been sick.

That was what everyone told me.

He had been tired.

He had been struggling.

The doctors had explained everything.

At least, that was what I believed.

But now, standing in my backyard while my husband searched for my unknown sister, I realized something terrifying.

I had never investigated anything myself.

I had only accepted the answers other people gave me.

And Julian had always been one of those people.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message from Vanessa.

*Do not respond from your regular phone. He may have access.*

I looked at Julian.

He was standing near the back door, his phone pressed against his ear.

His voice was low.

His body tense.

He was no longer pretending to be calm.

For the first time, I saw him without the mask.

Desperate.

I walked farther away from the house.

Then I grabbed the old phone.

I typed:

*Where are you?*

The reply came after almost a minute.

*Somewhere he cannot find me.*

I frowned.

*How did you get my number?*

A pause.

Then:

*Rachel gave it to me.*

I looked down.

Rachel.

Even now, she was trying to help.

The woman I thought betrayed me was risking herself to protect me.

I felt a wave of guilt.

I had doubted her.

Julian wanted that.

He wanted me isolated.

He wanted everyone around me to become suspicious.

I typed:

*Tell me everything.*

This time, the response took longer.

When it came, it arrived in pieces.

*Your father didn’t just leave money.*

Another message.

*He created a trust before he died.*

Another.

*A private trust meant for both his daughters.*

I stared.

Both daughters.

*Why didn’t I know?*

The answer appeared.

*Because Julian made sure you didn’t.*

My hands tightened.

*How?*

Vanessa replied:

*He found the trust documents before you did.*

I looked toward the house.

The pieces connected.

The investigation.

The documents.

The hidden company.

The transfer.

Julian wasn’t after my business.

Not only.

He was after something older.

Something my father left behind.

Something I didn’t even know existed.

*What was in the trust?*

The answer came slowly.

*A controlling share in a family investment company.*

I froze.

A controlling share.

My father had never been rich.

At least, that was what I believed.

He worked hard.

He lived simply.

He drove the same car for years.

But apparently, there was an entire part of his life I never knew.

*Why would he hide this from me?*

Vanessa answered:

*He didn’t hide it.*

A pause.

*Someone else did.*

My heart sank.

I already knew who.

Julian.

But I needed to understand.

*How did Julian find you?*

The answer came.

*He hired someone to locate me after discovering the trust.*

I stared.

*Why would he need you?*

Then:

*Because the trust could only be accessed if both daughters agreed.*

Everything stopped.

Both daughters.

That was why.

Julian needed Vanessa.

He needed her cooperation.

Or he needed her removed.

I looked back at the house.

Suddenly, his fear made sense.

Vanessa disappearing wasn’t just inconvenient.

It threatened his entire plan.

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

Julian was standing there.

“How long have you been out here?””

My heart jumped.

I locked the old phone.

“Not long.””

His eyes moved to my hands.

“What are you doing?””

“Nothing.””

He smiled faintly.

A dangerous smile.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“You’re not very good at lying.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

I looked at him.

“Neither are you.””

The smile disappeared.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he walked closer.

“I know you’re upset.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“Do you know why?””

His face hardened slightly.

“I know you’ve been talking to someone.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My phone.

My accounts.

My information.

He had access.

“Who?””

I remained silent.

His expression changed.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“You spent months keeping secrets from me.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“You investigated my family.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You found my sister.””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You talked to her.””

It wasn’t a question.

I didn’t answer.

Julian stepped back.

For the first time, he looked worried.

Not angry.

Worried.

“What did she tell you?””

I almost smiled.

Because now I knew.

He was afraid of what I knew.

Not angry that I asked.

Afraid.

“That she knows the truth.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked away.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because you won’t believe me.””

I laughed quietly.

“You’re right.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t care anymore.

“What happened to my father?””

His entire body went still.

“Claire.””

“What happened?””

He lowered his voice.

“Your father made mistakes.””

“Everyone makes mistakes.””

“This was different.””

“How?””

He looked at the ground.

Then said:

“He trusted the wrong people.””

I watched him.

“You mean you?””

His eyes snapped up.

“No.””

But the answer came too quickly.

Too defensively.

I knew Julian.

I knew every tiny expression.

And I knew when he was hiding something.

“You were involved.””

“Claire—”

“You were involved with my father.””

He said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

I stepped back.

“My God.””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You knew him.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Through business.””

I stared.

“You met my father through business?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Before me.

Before our marriage.

Before everything.

Julian had entered my life carrying secrets.

“How much did you know?””

He didn’t answer.

“How much did you know about the trust?””

Still nothing.

Then his phone rang.

He looked down.

A message.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I watched him read it.

Then he looked at me.

And I knew something had happened.

“What is it?””

He didn’t respond.

“Julian.””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Vanessa contacted my attorney.””

My heart raced.

“What did she say?””

He stared at me.

“She has copies of the original documents.””

The original documents.

The proof.

The truth.

I felt something shift inside me.

For the first time, Julian wasn’t controlling the story.

Someone else had the evidence.

Someone else had the power.

Then he said:

“She’s threatening to expose everything.””

I looked at him.

“Everything?””

His eyes hardened.

“Yes.””

“Maybe she should.””

The words came out calmly.

And that seemed to surprise him.

Because the woman standing in front of him was no longer begging for answers.

She was demanding them.

Julian stepped closer.

“Claire, you don’t know what you’re doing.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“You don’t know what I’m doing.””

A silence fell between us.

Then my old phone buzzed.

I didn’t look.

But Julian noticed.

His eyes moved toward my pocket.

A small movement.

A mistake.

I saw it.

And I knew.

He was going to reach for it.

So I moved first.

I stepped back.

“What are you doing?””

His face changed.

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

“Claire.””

“No.””

The anger appeared.

The real Julian.

Not the husband.

Not the businessman.

The man underneath.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

I stared at him.

“You’re right.””

Then I smiled.

“But I’m about to find out.””

I walked away.

Behind me, Julian called my name.

I didn’t turn around.

Because for the first time in years, I wasn’t walking away from him.

I was walking toward the truth.

I reached my car.

Locked the doors.

Opened the old phone.

One final message from Vanessa waited.

*Claire, I found the original trust documents.*

Then:

*Your father didn’t leave you money because he trusted you.*

I frowned.

Another message appeared.

*He left you control because he knew someone would try to take it from you.*

My breath caught.

Then the final message arrived.

*And Claire… he wrote your name in the documents for a reason.*

I stared at the screen.

The message continued.

*He knew Julian before you ever met him.*

I stopped breathing.

Because if that was true…

then my marriage had never started the way I thought.

May you like

It had started with a secret.

And maybe Julian had never chosen me by accident.
