Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Move

At 6:42 p.m., my entire executive team was working.

The bank had been contacted.

Our legal department had notified the relevant authorities.

Cybersecurity was reviewing every login connected to the attempted three-million-dollar transfer.

And I was sitting in my office staring at a message from a man who had spent six years pretending to be my friend.

Michael walked in carrying another folder.

"The transfer was blocked.""

I looked up.

"Completely?""

"Yes. The bank flagged the authorization because the verification information didn't match your current security profile.""

I exhaled.

"Thank God.""

Michael sat opposite me.

"But there's a problem.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course there is.""

"The authorization originated from a device registered to our former executive office.""

I frowned.

"Peter's old workstation?""

"No. Yours.""

I stared at him.

"My office computer?""

"Yes.""

"How is that possible? I haven't used that machine in months.""

Michael opened his laptop.

"Someone accessed it remotely using an administrative credential that hadn't been deactivated.""

I leaned forward.

"Who had that credential?""

Michael hesitated.

"Thomas Bennett.""

I stood.

"Shut down the entire remote-access system.""

"Already done.""

"Audit every device.""

"Understood.""

I walked to the window.

The city lights were beginning to appear.

For the first time, I realized how close they'd come to moving millions of dollars using information stolen from my own company.

"Michael, do we know where Thomas is?""

"His flight landed in London three hours ago.""

"And Peter?""

"Same flight.""

I turned.

"Are they working together there?""

"We believe so.""

"Why London?""

Michael opened another file.

"Because Meridian Strategic Consulting has a registered business address there.""

I looked at the document.

A London office.

A financial services company.

And a series of transfers between accounts in different countries.

The operation had been more sophisticated than we'd initially understood.

"Has Harlan been contacted?""

"His attorneys received the preservation notice. He hasn't responded.""

I nodded.

"Keep pressure on the financial records.""

At 8:15 p.m., Robert called.

"Daniel, I have an update about the custody hearing.""

I sat down.

"Go ahead.""

"Laura's attorney has agreed to withdraw the emergency request for exclusive custody, at least temporarily.""

I exhaled.

"Why?""

"Apparently, they received information that undermines the allegations against you.""

I frowned.

"What information?""

"The gym's security footage. It clearly shows Ryan shoving you first. It also shows you leaving without retaliating.""

I closed my eyes.

"Good.""

"There's also an audio recording from the gym's reception area in which Laura tells you not to touch Ryan. The recording supports your account.""

I looked at the ceiling.

"Does this mean Ethan stays with me?""

"His current arrangement remains unchanged while the court considers the matter. But it's a positive development.""

"Thank you.""

Robert paused.

"Daniel, I also want to discuss something else. Laura's attorney has requested a private settlement conference.""

"About the divorce?""

"Yes.""

I leaned back.

"What are they asking for?""

"Laura wants to retain her personal assets, receive a portion of the marital property, and have scheduled access to Ethan.""

"That's reasonable if the court determines it's appropriate.""

"She also wants a confidentiality clause.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She doesn't want the details of the affair or the financial investigation becoming public.""

I stared at the wall.

"She can discuss that with her attorney. I'm not interested in humiliating her.""

"Good. Keep that position.""

After the call, I drove home.

Ethan was asleep.

I checked his bedroom, adjusted his blanket, and stood beside his bed for several minutes.

Then I went downstairs.

My phone vibrated.

Laura.

Can we talk? Please. It's important.

I didn't answer.

Another message arrived.

I know you hate me. But there's something you need to understand about Peter.

I stared at the screen.

Then I typed:

What?

Her reply came almost immediately.

Peter wasn't working for Harlan alone.

I frowned.

Who else?

There was a long pause.

Then she sent a photograph.

It showed a printed financial agreement.

At the top were the names of several investors.

One name stood out.

*THOMAS BENNETT.*

Beneath it was another.

*GREGORY SHAW.*

And at the bottom, a third name.

*VICTOR HARLAN.*

But there was something else.

The agreement referenced an unidentified investment group that had provided funding for the entire operation.

I called Laura.

She answered immediately.

"Where did you get this?""

"Peter left it in the apartment.""

"Which apartment?""

"The one he rented downtown.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why were you there?""

"I went looking for him after he stopped answering my calls.""

"Did you take the document?""

"Yes.""

"Where is it now?""

"In my car.""

I stood.

"Don't touch anything else. Keep the document safe. Contact your attorney and tell him you have evidence.""

"Daniel, you need to listen.""

"I'm listening.""

She lowered her voice.

"Peter told me the investment group wasn't interested in buying your company.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"They wanted control of the company without paying for it.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"How?""

"He said they would create financial problems, force the board to remove you, and then transfer the ownership through the holding company.""

I stared at the document.

"Who is behind the investment group?""

"I don't know.""

"Laura, you have to know something.""

She began crying.

"I heard Peter mention a name once.""

"What name?""

"Marcus Vale.""

I froze.

Marcus Vale was a well-known private equity investor.

He had been involved in several controversial acquisitions over the previous decade.

I had met him twice at industry conferences.

He had once approached me about buying Carter Athletic Group.

I'd rejected his offer.

And he'd been furious.

"Are you sure?""

Laura whispered:

"Yes.""

I sat down.

"How long has he been involved?""

"I don't know. Peter said Marcus was funding everything.""

I closed my eyes.

This was no longer a messy affair combined with a financial crime.

It was an attempt to take over my company through deception.

"Laura, why are you telling me this now?""

She was silent.

Then she said:

"Because Peter threatened me.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What did he say?""

"He told me I was no longer useful. He said if I spoke to you, he would make sure I went to prison and lost Ethan.""

I took a slow breath.

"Did he threaten you physically?""

"No. But he said he had people watching me.""

I looked toward the window.

"Are you safe right now?""

"I'm at my sister's house.""

"Stay there. Don't meet anyone connected to Peter.""

She began crying again.

"Daniel, I know I've done terrible things.""

I said nothing.

"I know I hurt Ethan. I know I betrayed you.""

Her voice cracked.

"But I don't want to go to prison.""

I closed my eyes.

"Laura, you need to understand that telling the truth doesn't erase what you did.""

"I know.""

"And I can't promise to protect you from the consequences.""

"I understand.""

"Then cooperate fully with the investigators.""

She whispered:

"I will.""

I ended the call and immediately contacted Rebecca.

She arrived at my house thirty minutes later.

I showed her the photograph.

She studied it carefully.

"Where is the original?""

"With Laura.""

"Have her attorney arrange a secure transfer. Don't take possession yourself.""

I nodded.

"She mentioned Marcus Vale.""

Rebecca's expression changed.

"That's serious.""

"You know him?""

"I know his reputation. He's been involved in several aggressive acquisition disputes.""

I looked at her.

"Can he take control of my company?""

"Not without a valid legal basis. But if the documents are fraudulent, we need to identify every person who helped prepare them.""

I leaned forward.

"Then find the investment group.""

Rebecca nodded.

"We'll work with the investigators.""

The following morning, I arrived at the office before seven.

Michael was waiting.

He looked exhausted.

"Daniel, we have a problem.""

I put my briefcase down.

"What now?""

"Marcus Vale's investment firm has submitted a formal request to purchase a portion of Northstar Fitness.""

I frowned.

"That's not illegal.""

"No. But the timing is suspicious.""

"Why?""

Michael opened a document.

"The offer includes a clause requiring access to certain operational and financial information from any company considering a strategic partnership with Northstar.""

I stared at it.

"They want our information through Northstar.""

"Exactly.""

I walked toward the window.

"Can they get it?""

"Not without our consent. But they've already submitted a separate inquiry about our acquisition plans.""

I turned.

"Reject everything.""

"Already done.""

Then Michael placed another document on the table.

It was a notice from the financial institution handling the proposed Northstar transaction.

The notice indicated that an undisclosed third party had claimed an interest in Carter Holdings.

I read the name.

*THOMAS BENNETT.*

I looked up.

"How?""

Michael shook his head.

"We're investigating.""

I called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

"Daniel?""

"Someone is claiming an interest in Carter Holdings.""

"I know. We received the notice.""

"Can they do that?""

"Anyone can make a claim. It doesn't mean the claim is valid.""

"What's their argument?""

She paused.

"They're alleging that you entered into a private ownership agreement with Thomas several years ago.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible.""

"I know. But they've submitted a document bearing your signature.""

I sat down.

"Another forgery?""

"That's what it appears to be.""

I rubbed my face.

"Can you stop it?""

"We've requested verification and notified the relevant parties that the document is disputed.""

I looked at the ceiling.

"How many forged documents are there?""

"At least three that we're aware of.""

I ended the call.

For the next hour, I reviewed every record connected to the company.

Then Michael came into my office.

"Daniel, we've identified the source of the original ownership certificate.""

I looked up.

"Where?""

"Peter's storage unit.""

"Was it recovered?""

"Yes.""

"Is it authentic?""

Michael nodded.

"Completely.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

Then he placed a second document beside it.

"This was found inside the same folder.""

I picked it up.

It was a handwritten letter.

The date was from eight months earlier.

The first line read:

To everyone involved in the acquisition plan.

I began reading.

The letter described how they intended to use Laura's access to my personal life, Ryan's position inside the gym, Peter's former executive credentials, and Thomas's board influence.

Then came a paragraph that made my hands go cold.

The emotional separation must occur before the final ownership transfer. Daniel is more likely to resist if he believes this is simply a business dispute. A public affair will create confusion, weaken his judgment, and make the custody strategy more believable.

I stopped reading.

The gym.

The kiss.

The shove.

The divorce agreement.

The custody allegations.

They had considered all of it.

My humiliation had been part of their strategy.

Michael quietly closed the office door.

"Daniel...""

I looked at him.

"Ryan knew?""

"We believe he did.""

"And Laura?""

Michael didn't answer.

I turned the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten instruction.

The final trigger will be activated once Daniel signs the separation documents.

I stared at those words.

"What's the final trigger?""

Michael shook his head.

"We don't know yet.""

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

"Daniel, we found something in the recovered electronic files.""

"What?""

"An encrypted folder. Our forensic team has partially recovered it.""

"And?""

She hesitated.

"It contains a draft announcement concerning Carter Athletic Group.""

I frowned.

"What kind of announcement?""

Her voice dropped.

"A statement claiming that you've voluntarily transferred controlling ownership of the company to Thomas Bennett and Marcus Vale.""

I stood.

"That's impossible.""

"I know.""

"Who authorized it?""

"That's the disturbing part.""

She paused.

"The document is scheduled for release tomorrow morning.""

I looked at the letter in my hand.

"They're planning to announce that they own my company?""

"Yes.""

I stared at the city outside my office.

"Then let's make sure they're ready.""

Rebecca sounded confused.

"What do you mean?""

I turned toward Michael.

"Prepare an emergency press conference.""

"Daniel?""

I looked at the letter again.

"Tomorrow morning, they're going to announce that they've taken my company.""

May you like

I slowly smiled.

"Let's give them an audience.""
