Amused

Chapter 5: The Man Who Walked Into My Boardroom

At 8:45 the following morning, I stood outside the executive conference room holding a cup of black coffee.

Through the glass walls, I could see Michael arranging documents.

Rebecca was speaking with two members of our legal team.

Everything was ready.

At 9:00, Victor Harlan arrived.

He was a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties, with silver hair, an expensive navy suit, and the polished confidence of someone who had spent decades convincing people he was always the smartest person in the room.

He wasn't alone.

Ryan Mitchell walked beside him.

Ryan wore a tailored charcoal suit.

His hair was neatly styled, and a silver watch gleamed beneath his cuff.

He looked nothing like the man who had shoved me against his gym's mirrored wall.

When he saw me, he smiled.

"Well, look who it is.""

I took a sip of coffee.

"Good morning, Ryan.""

Victor looked between us.

"Have you two met?""

Ryan laughed.

"Unfortunately. Daniel is Laura's husband.""

Victor nodded.

"Ah. The family situation.""

I looked at him.

"That's one way to describe it.""

Ryan stepped closer.

"Listen, man. About the other day—"

I raised my hand.

"Let's not discuss personal matters here.""

His smile tightened.

"Fair enough.""

Victor extended his hand.

"Victor Harlan. Good to finally meet you.""

I shook it.

"Daniel Carter.""

He nodded casually.

"Ryan tells me you're a consultant.""

I smiled.

"Something like that.""

Ryan laughed.

"Daniel's always been modest.""

I looked at him.

"Have I?""

He didn't answer.

We entered the conference room.

Victor took a seat near the center.

Ryan sat beside him.

Michael placed a document in front of each guest.

"Thank you for coming," he began.

"Today we'll discuss the proposed Northstar acquisition and the Lakewood management transition.""

Victor opened the folder.

"Excellent. We've made considerable progress on our side.""

I sat at the head of the table.

"Have you?""

"Absolutely.""

Victor gestured toward Ryan.

"Ryan has been instrumental in identifying opportunities within your organization. He's familiar with your operations and understands the market.""

I glanced at Ryan.

"That's interesting.""

Victor continued.

"We believe Lakewood would benefit from a more flexible management structure. Ryan has several ideas that could improve profitability.""

"Such as?""

Ryan leaned forward.

"Better control over membership revenue. More aggressive personal training packages. A revised staffing model.""

I nodded.

"Would you say your current approach to revenue management is compliant with company policy?""

Ryan's smile faltered slightly.

"Of course.""

"Excellent.""

Michael placed another document on the table.

"Then perhaps you can explain these transfers.""

Ryan glanced down.

His expression changed.

"What are these?""

"Financial transfers from Lakewood's personal training department.""

Victor leaned forward.

"What does this have to do with the acquisition?""

Michael answered calmly.

"Several payments were redirected to an outside consulting company. That company received funds from the facility.""

Ryan laughed.

"That's an accounting issue. Nothing to do with me.""

I looked at him.

"Your authorization appears on the records.""

"Then someone used my credentials.""

"Interesting.""

I turned toward Victor.

"And these?""

Michael placed photographs on the table.

They showed Victor meeting Ryan outside a restaurant.

Victor's face became still.

"Those are private meetings.""

"Not particularly private if they're being photographed in public.""

Ryan shifted in his chair.

Victor looked at me.

"Daniel, perhaps we should discuss this separately.""

I leaned back.

"Why? We're all here.""

Victor closed the folder.

"I don't think there's any reason to make this adversarial.""

I smiled.

"Neither do I.""

Then I turned toward Michael.

"Would you please display the ownership documents?""

Michael connected his laptop to the conference room screen.

The Carter Athletic Group corporate structure appeared.

At the top was Carter Holdings.

Beneath it were the operating subsidiaries and individual facility ownership entities.

Then the shareholder information appeared.

Victor stared at the screen.

Ryan leaned forward.

His eyes moved across the document.

Then stopped.

At the top of the ownership structure was my name.

*DANIEL CARTER — 68.4% BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP.*

Ryan went completely still.

Victor's mouth opened slightly.

I placed my coffee cup on the table.

"Since we're discussing management opportunities, I thought everyone should understand who they're negotiating with.""

Ryan stared at me.

"You're...""

"Yes.""

He looked toward Victor.

Then back at me.

"You own Carter Athletic Group?""

I nodded.

"Most of it.""

Victor slowly removed his glasses.

"Why wasn't this disclosed earlier?""

I smiled.

"Because I generally don't introduce myself by discussing my bank balance.""

Ryan's face had lost its color.

I continued.

"Now, Ryan, you seem to have a remarkable amount of interest in the company's finances. Perhaps you can explain why you accessed confidential ownership records.""

He swallowed.

"I didn't—"

Michael interrupted.

"The access logs show your employee credentials.""

Ryan looked at Victor.

Victor said nothing.

I turned to him.

"And Mr. Harlan, perhaps you can explain why your company received confidential information from a Carter Athletic Group employee.""

Victor straightened.

"These allegations are serious.""

"Yes. They are.""

He closed his folder.

"I suggest we postpone this meeting until our legal representatives can review the information.""

Rebecca spoke for the first time.

"That would be appropriate.""

She placed a notice on the table.

"This is a formal preservation notice concerning potentially misappropriated confidential business information, unauthorized financial transfers, and suspected fraudulent activity.""

Victor didn't touch it.

Ryan stared at the document.

I looked at him.

"You should have read the employment agreement more carefully.""

He blinked.

"What?""

"Your agreement contains a confidentiality clause. So does every document you signed when you joined the company.""

His jaw tightened.

"I wasn't stealing anything.""

"Then you'll have no difficulty explaining the transactions.""

Ryan suddenly pushed his chair backward.

"This is ridiculous!""

His voice echoed through the room.

"You can't just accuse people because you're angry about your wife!""

I remained seated.

"You're right. That's why our attorneys are handling the investigation.""

Ryan pointed at me.

"You think you can destroy my life because I kissed your wife?""

I looked at him for several seconds.

"No, Ryan. I think you may have destroyed your own life because you believed nobody would ever look closely at what you were doing.""

Victor stood.

"We're leaving.""

I nodded.

"You're welcome to.""

Ryan hesitated.

Then he leaned toward me.

"You haven't heard the last of this.""

I looked directly into his eyes.

"I sincerely hope I have.""

They walked out.

When the door closed, Michael exhaled.

"That went better than expected.""

Rebecca collected the documents.

"Let's not celebrate yet. We need to secure the remaining evidence and coordinate with the investigators.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

At 10:20, my phone rang.

Laura.

I answered.

"What?""

Her voice was trembling.

"What did you do?""

I looked toward Michael.

"Good morning to you too.""

"Ryan just called me. He said you humiliated him in front of Victor.""

I said nothing.

"Daniel, you had no right to do that!""

I almost laughed.

"No right?""

"You made him look like a criminal!""

"Did I?""

"He's my partner!""

The words hung in the air.

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not a trainer.

Not a friend.

Her partner.

"Laura, you just admitted something you should probably discuss with your attorney.""

She went quiet.

Then she whispered:

"I didn't mean it like that.""

"Of course.""

"Daniel, listen to me. Ryan has been helping me.""

"With what?""

She hesitated.

"With our future.""

I looked at the conference room door.

"Your future seems to involve stealing money from my company.""

"That's not true!""

"Then explain the one hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""

Silence.

I heard her breathing.

Finally, she spoke.

"What money?""

I laughed softly.

"That's what I thought.""

She suddenly became angry.

"You're spying on me!""

"Laura, you transferred money through a consulting company connected to my gym.""

"I was helping Ryan with a business.""

"Using stolen company funds?""

"That's not what happened!""

"Then tell your lawyer to explain it.""

She started crying.

"Daniel, please. We can fix this.""

I stared at the table.

"Can we?""

"Yes. We can. I don't want to lose everything.""

I felt a chill run through me.

"Everything?""

She quickly corrected herself.

"I mean our family.""

I looked at the framed photograph of Ethan.

"Then you should have thought about our family before you kissed Ryan in front of our son.""

I ended the call.

That afternoon, I met my family attorney, Robert Hayes.

He had handled several complex business divorces and understood the importance of keeping personal emotions separate from legal strategy.

He reviewed the divorce agreement Laura had sent.

Then he stopped at one page.

"Daniel, do you know what this authorization does?""

I leaned forward.

"No.""

He tapped the page.

"It grants Laura temporary authority to access specific investment records and sign certain financial documents on your behalf.""

"Can she transfer money?""

"Under the language they've drafted, potentially. The scope is broad enough that I wouldn't recommend signing anything.""

I shook my head.

"She's already been trying to get access.""

Robert nodded.

"There's another issue.""

He turned to a page near the back.

"Laura is requesting primary physical custody of Ethan.""

I looked at him.

"On what grounds?""

"She claims your work schedule makes you unavailable. She also alleges that you have become emotionally volatile.""

I stared at the paper.

"She's using the gym incident.""

"Yes. Her attorney has included a statement claiming you threatened Ryan.""

I leaned back.

"That's a lie.""

"I know. But we'll need evidence.""

I remembered Emily's recording.

The security footage.

The witnesses.

"There's video of Ryan shoving me.""

Robert nodded.

"Excellent. Preserve it immediately.""

He reviewed the remaining pages.

Then he looked up.

"There's something else. Laura is asking for temporary exclusive use of the marital home.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She claims she needs a stable environment for Ethan.""

I almost laughed.

"She left the house herself.""

Robert wrote something down.

"That may be relevant.""

Then he asked:

"Do you want to contest custody?""

I didn't hesitate.

"Absolutely.""

Robert nodded.

"Then we focus on Ethan's best interests. We document his routines, school attendance, caregiving arrangements, and everything relevant. We don't use him as a weapon.""

I agreed.

That evening, I collected Ethan from school.

He ran toward me carrying a drawing.

"Daddy! Look!""

It was a picture of three people holding hands.

Me.

Him.

Laura.

Above us, he'd drawn a bright yellow sun.

I smiled, although my throat tightened.

"That's beautiful, buddy.""

He looked at the picture.

"I made it for Mommy.""

I crouched.

"Would you like me to give it to her?""

He nodded.

"Maybe she'll come home if she sees it.""

I held him.

"We'll see, sweetheart.""

When we arrived home, I noticed a black SUV parked across the street.

It had been there the previous evening too.

I glanced at it.

The driver's window was dark.

I didn't think much of it until my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

You should stop investigating Ryan. Your son deserves a peaceful life.

I stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

Ask Laura what happened to the original ownership documents.

I looked toward the SUV.

Its headlights suddenly switched on.

And as it pulled away, I caught a glimpse of the license plate.

It was registered to Meridian Strategic Consulting.

The same company connected to Ryan.

I called Michael immediately.

"Find out who owns that vehicle.""

"What's happened?""

"Someone has been watching my house.""

There was a pause.

May you like

Then Michael said:

"Daniel, I think we need to talk about the original ownership documents.""
