Amused

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Thought I Was Powerless

By nine that morning, I had received three calls from Laura.

I ignored all of them.

At 9:17, she sent a message.

Daniel, we need to talk about Ethan.

I stared at the screen.

That was the first time she'd mentioned our son since the gym.

I replied.

What about him?

Her response came almost immediately.

He shouldn't have witnessed what happened yesterday. I want to see him.

I typed:

He wants to know why you kissed Ryan.

No response.

Then:

You're making this difficult.

I almost dropped the phone.

There it was again.

Not remorse.

Not concern.

Inconvenience.

I put the phone away and looked across the conference table.

Michael was reviewing a document.

Rebecca was speaking with the financial investigator.

I interrupted them.

"I want to know who Ryan really is.""

Rebecca nodded.

"We've started looking into his employment history.""

"Start with his previous businesses. Every company, every partnership, every lawsuit.""

Michael opened his laptop.

"There's something interesting about that.""

"What?""

"Ryan worked for a company called Apex Performance Solutions before joining Lakewood.""

"Never heard of it.""

"Neither had I. It was registered two years ago, dissolved eight months later, and reappeared under a different name.""

Rebecca looked up.

"What's the new name?""

"Meridian Strategic Consulting.""

I frowned.

"That sounds like a consulting firm, not a fitness company.""

"Exactly.""

Michael turned his laptop toward me.

"Meridian has received payments from three businesses connected to former employees of our competitors.""

"How much?""

"Approximately six hundred thousand dollars over eighteen months.""

I leaned forward.

"Who owns it?""

"The registered director is a man named Gregory Shaw.""

"Is he related to you?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"No relation.""

Michael continued.

"But there's an address on the incorporation documents that matches a residential property Ryan rented last year.""

I stared at the screen.

"Find him.""

"We're working on it.""

I stood.

"I want a meeting with the Lakewood management team this afternoon. Quietly. Don't mention the audit.""

Rebecca looked concerned.

"Daniel, given what happened yesterday, I don't recommend going back to that location until we understand the situation.""

I looked at her.

"I'm not going there as an angry husband.""

I picked up my jacket.

"I'm going there as the owner of the company.""

At 11:40 a.m., I arrived at Lakewood.

The receptionist recognized me immediately.

Her name was Melissa.

She stood up when I approached.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Good morning, Melissa.""

She looked nervous.

"Is everything okay?""

"Yes. I need to speak with the facility manager.""

"Of course. Should I call him?""

"Please.""

She picked up the phone.

While she waited, I glanced toward the private training area.

The same mirrored wall.

The same equipment.

The same spot where I'd watched my wife kiss another man.

My jaw tightened.

Melissa lowered her voice.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes?""

"I wanted to apologize about yesterday.""

I turned toward her.

"You don't need to apologize.""

"I know it wasn't my place to say anything, but what happened was wrong.""

I studied her face.

"Did you know about the relationship?""

She hesitated.

"I had heard things.""

"What things?""

She looked toward the gym floor.

"Ryan and Mrs. Carter spent a lot of time together after her sessions. Sometimes he would close the training room, even when other clients were waiting.""

"Did anyone report it?""

"One of the trainers complained. Ryan told him to mind his own business.""

I nodded.

"Thank you for telling me.""

She lowered her voice further.

"There's something else.""

I waited.

"Last week, Ryan told some of the staff that the gym would probably have new management soon.""

I frowned.

"Did he say why?""

"He said the owners were going to sell.""

I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.

"Who told him that?""

"He said he had friends in the business.""

Before I could ask another question, the elevator doors opened.

A man in a navy polo shirt stepped out.

He was in his late forties and carried himself with the confidence of someone accustomed to giving orders.

"Mr. Carter?""

I nodded.

"I'm James Porter, the facility manager.""

We shook hands.

"I'd like to speak privately.""

"Certainly.""

He led me into his office.

The room smelled of coffee and disinfectant.

James closed the door.

"Is this about Ryan?""

"Partly.""

He rubbed his chin.

"I figured something like this might happen.""

"Explain.""

James opened a drawer and pulled out a folder.

"I've been keeping copies of several complaints.""

"Why?""

"Because Ryan has been acting strangely for months.""

He placed the folder on the desk.

There were printed emails, client complaints, and internal reports.

One complaint described unauthorized charges.

Another alleged that Ryan had pressured clients into purchasing training packages they didn't want.

A third concerned an employee who claimed Ryan had threatened to get him fired.

I read each document carefully.

"Why wasn't this escalated?""

James looked uncomfortable.

"Ryan told me he had connections with corporate.""

"What connections?""

"He said he knew someone who could make my position disappear.""

I closed the folder.

"Did he mention my name?""

James shook his head.

"Never. He always talked about an executive named Michael.""

I glanced at him.

"Michael Reeves?""

"Yes.""

That was interesting.

Michael had never authorized Ryan to make decisions on behalf of the company.

"Did Ryan ever claim he was involved in the ownership?""

James hesitated.

"Actually, yes.""

"When?""

"About two weeks ago. He told several employees he was helping negotiate a management transition.""

I stared at him.

"Did he provide any documents?""

James opened his computer.

"I saved a copy of the presentation he circulated.""

He turned the monitor toward me.

The document carried the heading:

*LAKEWOOD MANAGEMENT TRANSITION — CONFIDENTIAL*

Below it was a proposed organizational chart.

Ryan's name appeared at the top.

Beside it was the name of an outside investment company.

And beneath that, in small print, was the name Laura Bennett.

I felt my fingers tighten around the edge of the desk.

"Where did he get this?""

"He said it came from corporate.""

"Did anyone verify it?""

"No.""

I took photographs of the document.

Then I looked at James.

"From this moment forward, nobody discusses this meeting. Preserve every email, file, and security recording connected to Ryan Mitchell.""

James nodded.

"Understood.""

"And James?""

"Yes?""

"If anyone threatens your job for cooperating with this investigation, you call me directly.""

He looked genuinely relieved.

"I appreciate that, sir.""

I left the office and walked through the gym.

People continued exercising.

A woman adjusted a treadmill.

Two men laughed near the free weights.

A trainer helped an elderly client with a resistance band.

Ordinary life continued in the same room where my family had fractured.

Then I heard a familiar voice.

"Daniel?""

I turned.

Laura was standing near the entrance.

She wore black leggings, a cream-colored sweater, and oversized sunglasses.

Her hair was tied back.

She looked as though she'd spent considerable time preparing for this meeting.

I stopped.

"What are you doing here?""

She walked toward me.

"We need to talk.""

"Not here.""

"Then come outside.""

I glanced around.

Several people were watching.

I didn't want another public confrontation.

We walked into the parking lot.

The wind caught her hair.

She folded her arms.

"Daniel, what happened yesterday was unfortunate.""

I stared at her.

"Unfortunate?""

She sighed.

"You're going to make this sound worse than it was.""

"I watched you kiss another man.""

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that.""

"How was it supposed to happen?""

She looked away.

For a moment, she seemed unable to answer.

Then she said, "Ryan and I have been close.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Close?""

"Daniel, our marriage hasn't been good for a long time.""

I stared at her.

"We had dinner together last Friday. You told me you loved me.""

"I didn't want to hurt you.""

"So you decided to humiliate me in front of our son?""

Her expression hardened.

"You shouldn't have brought Ethan there.""

I shook my head.

"You're still blaming me.""

"Because you made a scene!""

"I walked in and found my wife kissing another man.""

She stepped closer.

"Keep your voice down.""

I looked at her.

"Why? Are you afraid someone might hear what you did?""

Laura exhaled sharply.

Then she changed her approach.

"Look, Daniel. We need to be adults about this.""

"Go on.""

"I think we should separate.""

I remained silent.

She continued.

"I've already spoken with someone about the arrangements. We can make this easy.""

"Arrangements?""

"The house. The savings. Ethan's schedule.""

I studied her face.

"Have you spoken to a lawyer?""

"Yes.""

"Already?""

She nodded.

"Ryan knows someone who can help.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Ryan is helping you arrange your divorce?""

"He's been very supportive.""

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since the previous night.

"Does Ryan know what I do for a living?""

Laura frowned.

"What?""

"Does he know who I am?""

She let out a short laugh.

"Daniel, everyone knows you're some kind of consultant.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Her expression became irritated.

"Why does it matter?""

I took one step closer.

"Because he seems very interested in my finances.""

For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.

Only for a second.

Then she recovered.

"You're being paranoid.""

"Am I?""

"Ryan has never asked you for anything.""

I thought about the messages.

The stolen company records.

The financial transfers.

The confidential acquisition documents.

I looked directly into her eyes.

"Did you give him access to my business information?""

She froze.

"What?""

"Laura, did you?""

Her face turned pale.

Then she shook her head.

"This is ridiculous.""

I watched her carefully.

She wasn't confused.

She was calculating.

And that frightened me more than anger would have.

"Daniel, you're making a terrible mistake.""

"What mistake?""

"Trying to turn this into something it isn't.""

I nodded slowly.

"All right.""

She seemed surprised by my response.

"All right?""

"Yes. We'll let the lawyers handle everything.""

She visibly relaxed.

"Good. That's what I've been trying to tell you.""

I turned toward my car.

Then she called after me.

"One more thing.""

I stopped.

"Ethan should stay with me during the week. You work too much, and he's used to having me around.""

I looked back.

"He's used to having both parents around.""

"Daniel, don't be difficult.""

I didn't answer.

I got into my vehicle and drove away.

But I wasn't going home.

I was going to see someone who could explain why Ryan Mitchell seemed so interested in my company.

At 2:15 p.m., I met Michael at a private office downtown.

He had obtained additional records from our cybersecurity team.

The first report showed that someone had accessed a confidential document containing the identities of Carter Athletic Group's major shareholders.

The second showed that the document had been forwarded to an external email address.

The third contained a name.

Victor Harlan.

I stared at the screen.

"Why would Ryan send our ownership information to Harlan?""

Michael opened another file.

"Because Harlan appears to have offered him something.""

"What?""

"An employment agreement.""

He displayed a scanned contract.

Ryan Mitchell would receive a senior management position in a newly formed fitness company.

In exchange, he would provide confidential information about Carter Athletic Group.

The proposed compensation was seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars over two years.

I leaned back.

"So Ryan was trying to sell our information.""

"Yes.""

"Where does Laura fit into this?""

Michael opened another document.

It was a transfer authorization.

Laura's consulting company had received money from an account connected to Harlan's business.

I read the amount.

One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.

My wife had received one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from the man trying to acquire confidential information about my company.

"Does she know what the money was for?""

"We don't know yet.""

I stared at the document.

Then Michael clicked on another file.

It contained an audio transcript recovered from a company device.

The conversation was between Ryan and Victor Harlan.

Ryan's voice was unmistakable.

She says Daniel is easy to handle.

Harlan replied:

What if he finds out?

Ryan laughed.

He won't. He's nobody important.

I stopped breathing for a second.

Then Ryan continued.

And even if he does, Laura has already convinced him to sign the divorce agreement.

I looked at Michael.

"What divorce agreement?""

Michael opened the final attachment.

It was a draft legal document.

The date was from three days earlier.

The proposed agreement required me to transfer several jointly held assets into Laura's name.

But there was something else.

A separate authorization page granted her access to certain financial records associated with a private investment company.

I recognized the company.

Carter Holdings.

My company.

I stared at the document.

The signature line contained my name.

It wasn't signed.

Yet someone had already inserted a digital copy of my signature into the file.

My blood ran cold.

"They're planning to forge my signature.""

Michael nodded.

"That's what it looks like.""

I slowly closed the laptop.

For eleven years, I'd believed that my biggest responsibility was protecting my family.

Now I understood that someone had been using my family to get close to everything I'd built.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unfamiliar number.

This time, it wasn't a photograph.

It was a voice message.

I pressed play.

Laura's voice filled the office.

"Ryan, I told you he wouldn't ask questions. Just give me a few more days. Once Daniel signs the papers, everything will be finished.""

Then Ryan spoke.

"You're sure he doesn't know about the company?""

Laura laughed softly.

"Daniel? Please. He thinks he's successful because he has a nice house and a decent job. He has no idea how much money we're dealing with.""

I stopped the recording.

Michael looked at me.

"Daniel...""

I raised my hand.

"Don't.""

The room fell silent.

I replayed the last few seconds.

Laura laughed again.

Then came Ryan's voice.

"Good. Because once we get the ownership documents, Harlan wants to meet the real boss.""

I stared at the phone.

And suddenly, I understood something.

Ryan didn't know who I was.

Laura didn't know how much I controlled.

And Victor Harlan had been trying to steal a company whose majority owner he had never bothered to meet.

I stood.

"Michael, arrange a board meeting.""

"When?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

"Should I invite Harlan?""

I looked at the audio transcript.

Then I smiled without warmth.

"No.""

I picked up my jacket.

"Let him believe everything is going according to plan.""

Michael nodded.

I walked toward the door.

Then my phone vibrated again.

It was a message from Laura.

I spoke to Ryan. We think it's best if you sign the divorce agreement tomorrow. He's arranged everything.

A second message followed.

Don't make this ugly, Daniel. You have no idea who you're dealing with.

I stared at the screen.

Then I typed five words.

I'll see you tomorrow morning.

I put the phone away.

Because tomorrow, Laura would walk into a room expecting to meet a broken husband who wanted to save his marriage.

Ryan would walk in expecting to negotiate with a man he considered insignificant.

And Victor Harlan would finally discover exactly who owned the company he'd been trying to steal.

But there was one thing I still hadn't figured out.

May you like

Who had sent me those anonymous messages?

And why did that person seem to know that Laura and Ryan were planning something even bigger than the theft?
