Chapter 8: The Betrayal Inside My Own Boardroom

I arrived at headquarters at 6:40 the following morning.
The building was nearly empty.
Security guards greeted me at the entrance.
I went directly to the executive floor and locked the door to my office.
Then I called Michael.
He arrived fifteen minutes later carrying two coffees and a folder.
"You look like you haven't slept.""
"I haven't.""
He placed the coffee on my desk.
"Have you told Rebecca?""
"Yes. She's reviewing the evidence.""
Michael opened the folder.
"I checked Thomas's recent activity.""
"And?""
"Three unusual communications with Peter Lawson. One occurred two days before the first fraudulent transfer.""
I stared at him.
"Do we know what they discussed?""
"Not yet. But Thomas also requested access to the confidential acquisition documents shortly before Peter resigned.""
"Did he have authorization?""
"Yes. He's a board director.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"How much could he have seen?""
"Enough to understand our acquisition strategy and ownership structure.""
I walked toward the window.
Thomas Bennett had served on our board for six years.
He had attended family dinners at my house.
He'd congratulated Ethan after his first school performance.
He'd once sent Laura an expensive necklace for her birthday.
I remembered that evening.
Thomas had smiled and told her she deserved something beautiful.
I'd thanked him.
Now I wondered what he had really wanted.
"Michael, freeze his access.""
"Already done.""
"And don't notify him.""
Michael nodded.
"Rebecca agrees.""
At 8:30, we met with the remaining directors.
Thomas wasn't invited.
I explained the newly discovered evidence without revealing every detail.
The atmosphere became tense immediately.
One director, Susan Miller, placed her hands on the table.
"Are you suggesting a member of this board participated in the theft of company information?""
"I'm saying there's credible evidence that requires investigation.""
Thomas's absence was conspicuous.
Another director shook his head.
"Thomas has been with us for years.""
I looked at him.
"So was Peter.""
Nobody responded.
Rebecca distributed copies of the relevant documents.
She was careful to distinguish confirmed records from allegations still under investigation.
Then Michael displayed the transfer timeline.
The room went silent.
Susan looked up.
"Who is the other person?""
I pointed to the document.
"Thomas Bennett.""
A director immediately stood.
"This is outrageous.""
I remained calm.
"Sit down, Robert.""
He looked at me.
"Thomas deserves a chance to explain himself.""
"He will have that opportunity through the appropriate process. But he will not have access to confidential company information while the investigation is ongoing.""
Susan nodded.
"I support the temporary restriction.""
The others eventually agreed.
After the meeting, Rebecca received a call.
She listened for several seconds.
Then she covered the microphone.
"Daniel, Thomas just attempted to access the acquisition database.""
I looked at Michael.
"How?""
"His credentials were rejected.""
Rebecca returned to the call.
"Please preserve the access attempt.""
She ended it.
Then she looked at me.
"He's been notified that his access is suspended.""
I leaned back.
"Good.""
At 10:45, Thomas called.
I answered.
"Daniel, what is going on?""
His voice sounded irritated.
"Why can't I access the acquisition files?""
"Because your credentials have been suspended.""
"On whose authority?""
"Mine, following advice from legal counsel.""
He laughed.
"This is absurd.""
"Then I'm sure you'll have no problem explaining your communications with Peter Lawson.""
Silence.
Then he said:
"What communications?""
"Thomas, don't insult my intelligence.""
His tone changed.
"Daniel, you need to be careful. You're making decisions based on incomplete information.""
"Then give me complete information.""
He exhaled.
"I'll come by your office.""
"No.""
"Excuse me?""
"You'll communicate through Rebecca.""
I ended the call.
At noon, an email arrived from Thomas.
The subject line read:
*A PRIVATE WARNING ABOUT YOUR WIFE.*
I opened it.
Daniel, I think you've misunderstood the situation. Laura approached me because she was concerned about the future of your family. She believed you were hiding assets and making financial decisions without consulting her.
I kept reading.
Peter was helping her understand her rights. Ryan was introduced as someone who could provide operational information. None of this was intended to harm the company.
I stared at the screen.
The email continued.
You should consider whether your anger over the affair is affecting your judgment.
I closed the message.
Then another email arrived.
This one came from Laura's attorney.
It contained a proposed temporary custody agreement.
The document requested that Ethan remain with Laura for the next thirty days.
It also included a statement claiming that I had become unpredictable and emotionally unstable.
I called Robert.
"Have you seen this?""
"Yes. It was sent to me ten minutes ago.""
"What do we do?""
"We reject the unsupported allegations and prepare our evidence. I also want to arrange an independent child welfare assessment if the court considers it necessary.""
"Will Ethan have to choose between us?""
"No. The court's focus will be his welfare, not making him choose sides.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
That afternoon, Laura arrived at the house.
She stood on the porch holding a paper shopping bag.
When I opened the door, she looked exhausted.
Her eyes were swollen.
Her hair was pulled back carelessly.
"Can I come in?""
I stepped aside.
She entered slowly.
"I brought Ethan something.""
She took out a blue toy car.
"He used to love these.""
I looked at it.
"He still does.""
She nodded.
"Can I see him?""
"He's upstairs. I'll ask him.""
I walked to the staircase.
"Ethan?""
He appeared at the top wearing his dinosaur shirt.
When he saw Laura, he froze.
"Mommy?""
Laura smiled through tears.
"Hi, sweetheart.""
He came down slowly.
She crouched and opened her arms.
For a moment, he didn't move.
Then he stepped forward.
She hugged him tightly.
"Oh, baby. I've missed you.""
Ethan rested his head against her shoulder.
"Why didn't you come home?""
Laura closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
"Are you still mad at Daddy?""
She looked at me.
Then back at Ethan.
"No, sweetheart.""
"Then why did you kiss Ryan?""
Laura's face crumpled.
She looked down.
"Because Mommy made a very bad choice.""
Ethan pulled back.
"Do you love him?""
Laura shook her head quickly.
"No. I love you.""
"But Daddy loves you too.""
She started crying.
I stood near the doorway, saying nothing.
Ethan looked at her.
"Are you coming home?""
Laura opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Finally, she whispered:
"I don't know, baby.""
Ethan looked down at the toy car.
"Okay.""
He took it from her and walked toward the living room.
Laura remained kneeling.
When he was out of earshot, she stood.
"Daniel, we need to talk.""
"About what?""
"Thomas.""
I looked at her.
"What about him?""
She glanced toward the staircase.
"Not here.""
I folded my arms.
"Then tell your lawyer.""
She shook her head.
"Thomas wasn't supposed to be involved.""
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?""
She lowered her voice.
"He introduced me to Peter.""
"I know.""
"He said Peter could help me secure money for my future.""
"Your future with Ryan?""
She looked away.
"At first, I didn't know about Ryan.""
I stared at her.
"Laura, the messages show you introduced him.""
She closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
I waited.
She continued.
"Thomas told me Ryan was trustworthy. He said Ryan could help Peter understand the company. I thought they were just gathering information.""
"And when did you learn about the money?""
"Later.""
"How much later?""
She hesitated.
"Before the first transfer.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"So you knew.""
"I knew some money was being moved. I didn't know everything.""
"Did Thomas promise you something?""
She nodded slowly.
"He said I would receive enough money to buy a house and start over.""
"And what did he receive?""
She looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I stared at her.
"You're telling me Thomas helped organize this entire operation, but you don't know what he was getting?""
She shook her head.
"Peter handled most of that.""
I stepped away.
"Laura, I need you to understand something. You are not going to protect yourself by giving me half-truths.""
She began crying again.
"I know.""
"Then tell the truth.""
She looked toward the living room where Ethan was driving his new toy car across the carpet.
Then she whispered:
"Thomas wanted your company.""
I stopped.
"What?""
"He said Harlan would buy Northstar and then use the information Peter collected to force you into selling Carter Athletic Group at a lower price.""
I stared at her.
"How?""
"Thomas said if they could create enough financial pressure, the board would lose confidence in you. He believed the directors would support a sale.""
I slowly understood.
This wasn't simply an attempt to steal money.
They had intended to destabilize the company, damage my credibility, and manipulate the board into selling.
"Was Thomas going to become CEO?""
Laura nodded.
"That's what Peter told me.""
I looked at her.
"And you?""
She lowered her eyes.
"I was supposed to receive a settlement.""
I almost couldn't believe it.
My wife had been promised money in exchange for helping remove me from the company I'd spent twelve years building.
I walked toward the front door.
"Laura, you need to leave.""
She grabbed my arm.
"Daniel, please.""
I gently pulled away.
"You can explain everything to the investigators.""
"Please don't destroy me.""
I looked at her.
"You had months to stop this.""
She began sobbing.
"I know.""
"Then why didn't you?""
She stared at me.
Finally, she said:
"Because I thought you would never find out.""
I opened the door.
She walked outside.
Before leaving, she turned around.
"Daniel?""
I didn't answer.
"There's something else you should know.""
I waited.
"Thomas has a copy of the original ownership certificate. The one with your real signature.""
My stomach tightened.
"Where?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know. But he said it was the only thing that could make the transfer work.""
I stared at her.
Then she added:
"He also said if you found out about everything, he had a way to make sure you lost control of the company anyway.""
She walked down the steps.
I closed the door.
Then I immediately called Rebecca.
"Thomas has the original ownership certificate.""
Her voice became serious.
"Are you certain?""
"Laura just told me.""
"We need to locate it immediately.""
I looked toward Ethan.
He was still playing on the living room floor.
"There's another problem.""
"What?""
"Thomas knows we're investigating him.""
Rebecca paused.
"Daniel, I think he's preparing to move.""
At 6:18 p.m., Michael called.
"Daniel, we have a situation.""
"What happened?""
"Thomas has resigned from the board.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where is he?""
"We don't know.""
Michael hesitated.
"His assistant says he left the country this afternoon.""
I gripped the phone.
"Which country?""
"United Kingdom.""
Then Michael said something that made my stomach drop.
"He didn't travel alone.""
I stared at the wall.
"Who was with him?""
"Peter Lawson.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then Michael continued.
"There's one more thing. A transfer was initiated from a dormant Carter Holdings account this afternoon.""
"How much?""
"Three million dollars.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Was it completed?""
"Not yet. But the authorization was submitted using your original digital signature.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Ethan was humming quietly in his room.
Three million dollars.
A forged ownership certificate.
A former director who had disappeared.
And a wife who had helped build the entire operation.
I took a slow breath.
"Freeze every account. Contact the bank. And get Rebecca on the phone.""
Michael replied immediately.
"Already doing it.""
Then my phone received a notification.
An email from Thomas.
The subject line read:
*YOU SHOULD HAVE ACCEPTED THE FIRST OFFER.*
I opened it.

There was a single sentence.
By the time you understand what I've taken, the company will no longer belong to you.
