Amused

Chapter 4: The Meeting They Never Saw Coming

At 7:15 the following morning, Laura sent me a photograph of a document.

It was a divorce settlement agreement.

Beneath the photograph, she'd written:

Ryan's attorney prepared everything. Just review it and sign. There's no reason to make this painful.

I stared at the screen while standing in my kitchen.

Ethan was sitting at the breakfast counter, carefully spreading strawberry jam across a piece of toast.

"Daddy?""

I looked up.

"Yes, buddy?""

"Are you going to work today?""

"I am.""

"Will you be home before bedtime?""

I smiled.

"I promise.""

He nodded and returned to his breakfast.

I placed my phone facedown.

The divorce agreement could wait.

My son couldn't.

After dropping Ethan at school, I drove to Carter Athletic Group's headquarters.

Michael was already waiting in my office.

He had arranged a meeting with the board for 9:00 a.m. Rebecca Shaw, our general counsel, sat beside him with a stack of documents.

"Good morning," Michael said.

"Any updates?""

He handed me a folder.

"We've identified the person who sent you the anonymous messages.""

I opened it.

A photograph showed a woman in her early thirties with dark hair and glasses.

"Who is she?""

"Emily Brooks. She worked as Ryan's assistant at Lakewood for approximately six months.""

"Why would she contact me?""

"She resigned three weeks ago after reporting financial irregularities. Ryan threatened her with a lawsuit, and management initially dismissed her complaints.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Does she have evidence?""

"Quite a bit.""

Michael placed a small flash drive on my desk.

"She contacted our compliance department yesterday. She has copies of messages, payment instructions, and recordings.""

I looked at Rebecca.

"Have you verified them?""

"Some have already been authenticated. Others require additional review.""

"Bring her in.""

Michael checked his watch.

"She's downstairs.""

Ten minutes later, Emily entered my office.

She looked nervous.

Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her.

"Mr. Carter?""

I stood.

"Please, sit down.""

She took the chair opposite me.

"I know what happened at the gym," she said quietly.

I nodded.

"Then you probably understand why I'm asking questions.""

She looked down.

"I should have told someone sooner.""

"Why didn't you?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Ryan told me nobody would believe me. He said he knew people at corporate and could make sure I'd never work in this industry again.""

Rebecca leaned forward.

"What exactly did you discover?""

Emily opened her bag and removed a notebook.

"Ryan started using fake customer accounts around March. He would create memberships under names that didn't exist, then process refunds through a separate company.""

"Laura Bennett Consulting?"" I asked.

Emily nodded.

"Yes.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Did you ever meet Laura?""

"Twice. She came to the gym after closing. Ryan introduced her as someone who was helping him with a business project.""

"What kind of project?""

Emily hesitated.

"They were planning to take over the Lakewood facility.""

Michael exchanged a glance with Rebecca.

I leaned forward.

"How?""

Emily opened her notebook to a marked page.

"Ryan said the current owner was distracted by personal problems. He believed he could convince the ownership group to replace management, then use the new position to gain access to other facilities.""

I stared at her.

"Did he know I was the owner?""

Emily nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

"How long has he known?""

"At least two months. He found your name in a corporate document.""

I sat back.

That changed everything.

Ryan hadn't simply underestimated me.

He had known who I was and still believed he could manipulate me.

"Why did you say he thought I was distracted?""

Emily swallowed.

"Because Laura told him you were emotionally dependent on her. She said you'd do almost anything to keep the marriage together.""

I looked at the notebook.

"What else?""

Emily took out her phone.

"I recorded something last week.""

She placed it on the desk.

The recording began with the sound of a door closing.

Then Ryan's voice.

Once the divorce papers are signed, we can move the remaining money.

Laura answered.

He won't sign if he sees everything.

Ryan laughed.

Then don't show him everything.

There was a pause.

Then Laura spoke again.

What if he refuses?

Ryan's answer made my stomach tighten.

We'll make him look unstable. He's been stressed for months. All we need is a few recordings and some messages.

The recording continued.

And Ethan? Laura asked.

Ryan sighed.

We'll deal with custody later.

I stopped the playback.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I looked at Emily.

"Did you give this recording to anyone else?""

"No.""

"Good. Keep the original file. Don't forward it to anyone.""

She nodded.

Rebecca wrote something in her notebook.

"Emily, we may need you to provide a formal statement.""

"I understand.""

I stood.

"Thank you for coming forward. What happened to you should never have happened.""

She looked surprised.

"Thank you, sir.""

After Emily left, Michael closed the office door.

"Daniel, we have enough to suspend Ryan immediately.""

"Not yet.""

He frowned.

"Why?""

"Because I want to know what Harlan is planning. If Ryan believes everything is still going his way, he'll keep communicating with him.""

Rebecca considered that.

"We can preserve the evidence and coordinate with investigators. But we need to be careful not to interfere with any potential criminal investigation.""

"Agreed.""

At 9:00 a.m., the board meeting began.

Seven executives sat around the long conference table.

I took the chair at the head.

Michael presented the financial investigation.

Rebecca explained the evidence involving unauthorized access and fraudulent transfers.

Then I showed them the proposed management transition document.

One board member, Thomas Bennett, leaned forward.

"Are you saying an employee attempted to take control of one of our facilities using fabricated ownership information?""

"That's exactly what I'm saying.""

Another director shook his head.

"How did this go undetected?""

Michael answered.

"The irregularities were initially small. They became more sophisticated over time.""

Thomas looked at me.

"And your wife is involved?""

I paused.

"Her name appears in the financial records. We're investigating her specific role.""

Nobody spoke.

I wasn't interested in discussing my marriage with the board.

But the company's reputation and financial security were their responsibility too.

"Effective immediately, all sensitive ownership records will require additional authorization. Ryan Mitchell's access will be restricted pending investigation. We will also conduct an independent review of every facility where he had administrative privileges.""

The directors agreed.

Then Thomas asked the question I had been waiting for.

"What do you want to do about Harlan?""

I looked around the table.

"Nothing publicly. Not yet.""

"Why?""

"Because I want to hear what he has to say when he thinks he has the upper hand.""

At 11:32 a.m., Laura called.

I answered.

"Hello.""

"Daniel, where are you?""

"At work.""

"I need you to meet me.""

"For what?""

"To sign the agreement.""

I glanced at Michael.

"Send it to my attorney.""

Her voice sharpened.

"Why are you involving lawyers?""

"Because we're getting divorced.""

There was a pause.

Then she laughed nervously.

"Don't be dramatic. Ryan's attorney said we could handle everything privately.""

"Ryan's attorney isn't my attorney.""

"Daniel, you're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

I closed my eyes.

"Laura, I watched you kiss another man in front of our son. I don't think you're in a position to lecture me about making things difficult.""

She went silent.

Then she said something unexpected.

"Ryan wants to apologize.""

I nearly laughed.

"Does he?""

"Yes. He says he was under a lot of pressure.""

"Tell him I'm not interested.""

"Daniel, please. He didn't mean to shove you.""

I looked at the framed photograph on my desk.

Ethan's fifth birthday.

Laura was holding him, and I was standing beside them.

We all looked happy.

"Laura, do you remember what Ethan asked you yesterday?""

Silence.

"He asked why you were kissing Ryan.""

She whispered, "I know.""

"Then perhaps you should think about that before asking me to forgive either of you.""

I ended the call.

At noon, Michael walked in carrying a new folder.

"Victor Harlan just requested a meeting.""

I looked up.

"When?""

"Tomorrow. He wants to discuss the Lakewood transition and the proposed acquisition.""

I smiled faintly.

"Accept.""

Michael nodded.

Then he placed another sheet on my desk.

"There's one more thing.""

"What now?""

"Harlan's company has already prepared a press release announcing that it's entering a strategic partnership with Carter Athletic Group.""

I frowned.

"Without our approval?""

"Yes.""

I read the document.

The headline was bold.

*NORTHSTAR FITNESS ANNOUNCES MAJOR PARTNERSHIP WITH CARTER ATHLETIC GROUP.*

Underneath was a photograph of Victor Harlan shaking hands with Ryan Mitchell.

I looked at the date.

Tomorrow.

The same day as our meeting.

They were planning to announce a partnership before we'd even agreed to one.

I handed the paper back.

"Let them prepare their announcement.""

Michael raised an eyebrow.

"You're sure?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Then I added:

"Just make sure they bring enough copies.""

That afternoon, I received a call from Ethan's school.

His teacher explained that he'd been unusually quiet and had refused to join the other children during lunch.

I left the office immediately.

When I arrived, Ethan was sitting on a bench near the playground.

His backpack rested beside him.

"Daddy!""

He ran toward me.

I crouched and caught him.

"Hey, buddy.""

His arms wrapped around my neck.

"Can we go home?""

"Of course.""

On the drive back, he stared out the window.

Then he spoke.

"Is Mommy coming to my school tomorrow?""

I glanced at him.

"Did you want her to?""

He shrugged.

"I don't know.""

I reached over and squeezed his hand.

"You don't have to decide anything right now.""

He nodded.

Then he said something that made me grip the steering wheel tighter.

"Ryan told Mommy I was too little to understand.""

I looked at him.

"When did Ryan tell her that?""

"Last time I saw him.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where?""

Ethan looked down.

"At the gym. Mommy was talking to him, and I was sitting on the chair.""

I slowed the car.

"What did he say, sweetheart?""

Ethan swallowed.

"He said grown-up things were none of my business.""

I pulled into a quiet parking area.

Then I turned toward my son.

"Ethan, listen to me. Nobody gets to tell you that your feelings don't matter.""

He nodded.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Then why did Mommy let him?""

I had no answer.

Not one that a seven-year-old should have to hear.

I hugged him.

And while he rested against my shoulder, I made myself a promise.

Whatever happened next, Ryan Mitchell would never again make my son feel small.

That evening, I received a calendar invitation from Michael.

*SPECIAL EXECUTIVE MEETING — NORTHSTAR ACQUISITION AND LAKEWOOD TRANSITION*

The location was our headquarters.

The attendees included Victor Harlan, Ryan Mitchell, and several members of Harlan's management team.

I accepted.

Then another notification appeared.

An email from Rebecca.

Subject:

*ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE — POSSIBLE CUSTODY MANIPULATION*

I opened it.

There was a scanned document attached.

It was a draft statement prepared by Ryan's attorney.

The document claimed I had displayed aggressive behavior at the gym, physically threatened Ryan, and created an emotionally unsafe environment for Ethan.

At the bottom was a section labeled:

*PROPOSED SUPPORTING WITNESS.*

The name written there was Laura Carter.

I stared at the screen.

My wife was preparing to testify against me.

And the statement had been drafted before I'd even left the gym that afternoon.

I called Rebecca.

"Tell me this isn't real.""

Her voice was serious.

"I'm afraid it is.""

I looked at the photograph of Ethan on my desk.

Then I asked:

"Can they use this to take my son away?""

Rebecca paused.

"Not without evidence. But we need to prepare for the possibility that they'll try.""

I ended the call.

May you like

Tomorrow wasn't just going to be a business meeting.

It was going to be the beginning of a fight for everything that mattered.
