Amused

Chapter 7: My Wife Had Been Planning This for Months

I read the handwritten note on the photograph so many times that the words eventually stopped looking real.

She wasn't recruited by Ryan. She was the one who introduced him to the plan.

For several minutes, I sat alone in my office, staring at the photograph of my wife holding hands with Peter Lawson.

Nine months earlier.

Before the gym.

Before the personal trainer.

Before the messages I'd found on her phone.

Before the afternoon Ethan and I walked through those glass doors and watched our family collapse.

I had spent days believing Laura's affair was the beginning of my problems.

Now I was beginning to understand that the affair might have been deliberately used to distract me from something much bigger.

I called Rebecca.

"Come to my office. Immediately.""

She arrived twelve minutes later.

I handed her the photograph.

She studied it carefully.

"Where did this come from?""

"Anonymous email.""

"Have you checked the original file?""

"Not yet.""

She placed it on the desk.

"Don't forward it to anyone. We'll preserve the original email and have our forensic team examine the attachment.""

I pointed at Peter.

"I want to know everything about his relationship with Laura.""

Rebecca nodded.

"There's something you should know. Peter resigned four months ago, but he didn't leave the industry. He's currently working as a strategic adviser for Northstar.""

I stared at her.

"He's still working with Harlan?""

"Yes.""

"And Laura knew him before all of this?""

"Apparently.""

Rebecca opened her laptop.

"I'll request the original employment records and any communications retained on company systems.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

"Rebecca, I need you to answer one question.""

"Go ahead.""

"If this was planned nine months ago, how much of the company could they have accessed?""

She hesitated.

"Potentially more than we initially believed.""

That answer made my stomach tighten.

"Explain.""

"Peter had administrative access to several departments before his resignation. He also participated in acquisition planning meetings. If he shared confidential information with Harlan, the financial impact could extend beyond Lakewood.""

I turned.

"Then we need a complete audit.""

"Already underway.""

"And I want every person involved identified.""

Rebecca nodded.

"Understood.""

After she left, I called Michael.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel?""

"Did you know Laura and Peter had a relationship before Ryan joined Lakewood?""

Silence.

Then Michael said:

"No.""

I sent him the photograph.

He called back less than a minute later.

"Where did you get this?""

"Anonymous email.""

Michael exhaled.

"Daniel, I think we need to look at the old acquisition files.""

"Why?""

"Because Peter was involved in preparing the original Lakewood acquisition.""

I frowned.

"That was before we bought the facility.""

"Exactly. He had access to the seller's financial records, employee contracts, and operational reports.""

I slowly sat down.

"Are you saying he could have arranged Ryan's employment before we even owned the gym?""

"Possibly.""

I closed my eyes.

"Find out.""

At 1:30 p.m., Michael returned with a preliminary report.

It was worse than I expected.

Peter had first met Laura at a charity business event nine months earlier.

He had introduced himself as a financial adviser.

According to the recovered messages, Laura had contacted him again two weeks later.

Then the meetings became frequent.

There were restaurant reservations.

Hotel visits.

Transfers between accounts.

And a series of messages discussing my company.

I opened the first conversation.

*Laura: You said you could help me understand his business structure.*

*Peter: I can. But I need to know how much you already know.*

*Laura: He doesn't tell me everything. He thinks I'm not interested.*

*Peter: That's useful. Keep it that way.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*Laura: What happens if he finds out?*

*Peter: By then, he'll have too much to lose to fight us.*

I felt something cold move through my chest.

This wasn't a desperate wife making one terrible decision.

This was a coordinated operation.

I continued reading.

*Peter: We need someone inside the fitness facilities.*

*Laura: I know exactly who to introduce.*

*Peter: Who?*

*Laura: Ryan Mitchell.*

I put the laptop down.

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe normally.

The woman who had once sat beside me in a hospital waiting room when Ethan was born had apparently helped place another man inside my company.

And then she had started sleeping with him.

Michael watched me carefully.

"Daniel, do you want to take a break?""

"No.""

I reopened the messages.

There was another conversation.

This one had taken place two months later.

*Laura: Ryan is getting too comfortable. He keeps asking about the company.*

*Peter: That's what we need him to do.*

*Laura: What about the marriage?*

*Peter: Let it continue. Daniel trusts you. Don't change anything until we have the documents.*

I leaned back.

The marriage.

They had discussed my marriage as though it were a business asset.

My phone vibrated.

Laura.

I ignored it.

Then she called again.

I answered.

"What?""

"Daniel, please don't hang up.""

"I'm listening.""

"I need to see you.""

"Why?""

"Because I need to explain something.""

I looked at the messages on my laptop.

"Are you going to tell me how you met Peter?""

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered:

"You know about that?""

"Nine months ago, Laura. Nine months.""

She began crying.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"I met him at a charity event. He approached me. He said he knew people who could help with investments.""

"And you gave him information about my company?""

"I didn't think it was wrong at first.""

"At first?""

"He asked questions. I answered some of them. Then he started talking about opportunities.""

I closed my eyes.

"What opportunities?""

"He said there were ways to make money without affecting you.""

I almost laughed.

"Did he tell you that before or after he started planning to steal from me?""

"Daniel, I didn't know it was going to become this.""

"Did you introduce Ryan to him?""

She stopped crying.

That silence was an answer.

"Laura?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the ceiling.

"Why?""

"Peter said Ryan was reliable. He said Ryan could help him understand how the gyms operated.""

"And then you started an affair with Ryan.""

Her voice cracked.

"It wasn't supposed to happen.""

I shook my head.

"You're still trying to make it sound accidental.""

"I was lonely, Daniel.""

"Then you should have talked to me.""

"You were always working!""

"I was working to build the life we shared.""

"You never understood what I needed!""

I gripped the phone.

"What did you need, Laura? More money? More attention? Another man?""

She began sobbing.

"I don't know anymore.""

I looked at the photograph on my desk.

"Did you ever love me?""

She didn't answer.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered:

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then why did you do this?""

Her answer came quietly.

"Because Peter told me you would never let me have anything of my own.""

I stared at the wall.

"Laura, you had a home. You had a family. You had access to everything we built together.""

"I wanted something that belonged to me.""

"So you helped steal my company?""

"I thought we could take a portion of the money and leave.""

"With Ethan?""

She didn't answer.

I ended the call.

Michael remained silent.

Then he asked:

"What do you want to do?""

I looked at the photograph.

"Find Peter.""

At 4:10 p.m., Rebecca called with an update.

"Daniel, we've identified a storage facility connected to Peter Lawson.""

"What is there?""

"We don't know yet. But the rental agreement was paid through Laura's consulting company.""

I stood.

"Where?""

"An industrial storage complex on the west side.""

"Have investigators been contacted?""

"Yes. We're coordinating with the appropriate authorities. You shouldn't go there yourself.""

"I wasn't planning to.""

I looked toward the office door.

"Keep me informed.""

That evening, I arrived home earlier than usual.

Ethan was sitting on the living room rug, building a tower out of plastic blocks.

When he saw me, he smiled.

"Daddy!""

I dropped my briefcase and sat beside him.

"What are we building?""

"A castle.""

"Looks impressive.""

"It's for Mommy.""

My chest tightened.

He carefully placed another block on top.

"She said she might come tomorrow.""

I looked at him.

"Did she call you?""

He nodded.

"She said she misses me.""

I swallowed.

"Would you like to see her?""

He nodded again.

"Yes.""

"Then we'll arrange something safe and comfortable.""

He looked at me.

"Are you coming too?""

I smiled gently.

"Of course.""

He returned to his castle.

A few minutes later, he asked:

"Daddy, if Mommy did something bad, can she still be a good mommy?""

I sat quietly.

Then I answered as honestly as I could.

"People can love their children and still make very bad choices. But being a good parent means taking responsibility for those choices.""

Ethan thought about that.

"Will she say sorry?""

"I hope she does.""

He placed a small plastic figure beside the castle.

"That's Mommy.""

Then he placed another figure next to it.

"That's me.""

I watched him arrange them.

And I wondered how many more times I would have to explain the damage adults had caused to a child who had done absolutely nothing wrong.

At 8:45 p.m., Rebecca sent an urgent email.

The investigators had located the storage unit.

Inside were boxes containing original corporate documents, printed bank statements, and several electronic devices.

There was also a folder labeled:

*OPERATION FAMILY EXIT.*

I opened the attached photograph.

The folder contained a handwritten timeline.

Nine months earlier: Contact Laura.

Eight months earlier: Recruit Ryan.

Six months earlier: Establish consulting accounts.

Four months earlier: Secure internal access.

Two months earlier: Prepare ownership transfer.

Final stage: Divorce, asset extraction, relocation.

At the bottom was one final line.

*If Daniel refuses to cooperate, activate custody strategy.*

I stared at the words.

Then I noticed something in the photograph.

Beside the timeline was a handwritten note.

It contained a name.

Not Laura.

Not Ryan.

Not Peter.

A name I knew very well.

*Thomas Bennett.*

One of the directors who had sat across from me at the board meeting.

I immediately called Michael.

"Don't speak to Thomas about anything.""

He went silent.

"Daniel, what's happened?""

I sent him the photograph.

A few seconds passed.

Then he said:

"That's impossible.""

I stared at the name.

"Apparently not.""

May you like

Because if Thomas Bennett was involved, then the people trying to destroy my family might already have been sitting inside my boardroom.

And the next person I trusted could be the one holding the knife.
