Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden in My Wife's Phone

Michael arrived at my house at 7:30 that evening.
He carried a laptop and a thick envelope.
I had put Ethan to bed twenty minutes earlier.
The little boy had insisted on keeping his drawing beside his pillow.
I opened the front door.
"Come in.""
Michael entered and placed the envelope on the dining table.
"Did you get the vehicle information?""
He nodded.
"The SUV belongs to Meridian Strategic Consulting. It's registered to Gregory Shaw.""
"Ryan's associate?""
"Possibly. We haven't confirmed the connection yet.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were several photographs.
The first showed the SUV parked outside my house.
The second showed a man standing near the mailbox.
The third showed the same man entering a coffee shop where Laura had been photographed two days earlier.
I looked up.
"Who is he?""
"His name is Gregory Shaw. He was previously employed as a financial adviser for a private investment company.""
"Which company?""
Michael handed me another document.
"Northstar's former investment partner.""
I studied the photograph.
Gregory appeared to be in his early forties, with a narrow face and dark hair.
"Why is he following my family?""
"We don't know yet.""
I walked toward the kitchen.
"Let's start with the ownership documents.""
Michael opened his laptop.
"That's where things get complicated.""
He displayed a scanned document.
It was a copy of a corporate ownership certificate.
My name appeared at the top.
But the signature at the bottom wasn't mine.
I leaned closer.
"That's a forgery.""
Michael nodded.
"We compared it against your verified signatures. The differences are clear.""
"When was this created?""
"Approximately six weeks ago.""
I stared at the document.
"What was it used for?""
"An attempt to establish a new holding company with authority to negotiate on behalf of Carter Holdings.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did anyone approve it?""
"No.""
"Then how did it get submitted?""
Michael clicked on another file.
"Through a private legal services office. The application was rejected because the verification documents didn't match.""
I leaned back.
"Who submitted it?""
Michael hesitated.
"Laura.""
I looked at him.
"You're certain?""
"Her email address was used to submit the application. The payment came from Laura Bennett Consulting.""
I stood silently.
The woman I'd married had apparently been trying to create a false ownership structure using my signature.
I looked at the document again.
"Does she understand the consequences?""
"That's for the investigators and attorneys to determine.""
I rubbed my face.
"How much money has been moved?""
"At least two hundred and thirty thousand dollars from Lakewood. Another one hundred and twenty thousand dollars appears to have come from Harlan's company.""
"Any transfers from our personal accounts?""
Michael shook his head.
"Not yet.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
Then I looked toward the staircase.
"Keep this away from Ethan.""
"Of course.""
Michael closed the laptop.
"Daniel, there's something else you should know.""
I looked at him.
"Go ahead.""
"We found a message from Laura to Gregory.""
He opened the conversation.
*Laura: Did you get the papers?*
*Gregory: Not yet. Ryan says the husband is asking questions.*
*Laura: He doesn't know anything. He's just upset about the affair.*
*Gregory: You need to move quickly. Harlan won't wait forever.*
*Laura: I know. But I need to make sure Ethan stays with me.*
I stared at the screen.
Then came another message.
*Gregory: The child isn't part of the deal.*
Laura's response made my blood run cold.
*Laura: He's the only reason Daniel will cooperate.*
I read it again.
And again.
The room seemed to shrink around me.
Michael quietly closed the laptop.
"Daniel...""
I raised a hand.
"Give me a minute.""
I walked to the window.
Outside, the street was quiet.
A neighbor was taking out the trash.
A couple walked their dog.
Everything looked normal.
But inside my home, the foundations of my life had been shaken by people who saw my son as leverage.
I turned back.
"Is there anything else?""
Michael nodded.
"One final thing. Gregory is scheduled to meet Ryan tomorrow afternoon.""
"Where?""
"At a private restaurant downtown.""
"Can we establish what they discuss?""
"Possibly, through lawful investigative channels. Our attorneys are coordinating with the appropriate authorities.""
I nodded.
"Good.""
After Michael left, I went upstairs.
Ethan was asleep on his side, one hand resting beside the drawing he'd made.
I carefully picked it up.
The three figures were holding hands.
Beneath them, in uneven handwriting, were the words:
*MY FAMILY.*
I sat on the edge of his bed.
And for the first time since discovering the affair, I cried.
Not because Laura had kissed another man.
Not because Ryan had insulted me.
Not because someone had stolen money from my company.
I cried because my little boy still believed his family could be put back together with a drawing.
The following morning, Robert called.
"Daniel, we received a response from Laura's attorney.""
"What do they want?""
"They're requesting an emergency custody hearing.""
I closed my eyes.
"On what basis?""
"They claim Ethan is experiencing emotional distress because of your behavior.""
I almost laughed.
"My behavior?""
"They've submitted a statement alleging that you shouted at Laura and threatened Ryan in front of Ethan.""
"That's not what happened.""
"I know. We have the gym footage. But they also claim you have been using your financial resources to intimidate your wife.""
I stared at the wall.
"She has been receiving money from the company she was helping steal from.""
"Then we'll need to present that evidence carefully.""
I nodded.
"What do you recommend?""
"Don't contact Laura except about Ethan. Don't discuss the investigation with her. Keep records of every interaction. And most importantly, maintain Ethan's routine.""
I looked toward the kitchen.
His lunchbox was sitting on the counter.
"Understood.""
At 10:15, I drove Ethan to school.
He seemed happier than he had been the previous day.
He told me about a science project involving volcanoes and asked whether we could build one at home.
I promised we would.
When I returned to the office, Rebecca was waiting.
She handed me a document.
"We've identified the person who created the forged ownership certificate.""
"Gregory?""
She shook her head.
"No. Someone inside your company.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Who?""
She placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed a man in his early forties wearing a blue shirt.
I recognized him immediately.
Peter Lawson.
Our former corporate operations director.
He'd resigned four months earlier.
I stared at the photograph.
"Why is Peter involved?""
Rebecca opened a folder.
"Because he had access to the original ownership documents before his resignation.""
"Where is he now?""
"Working as a consultant for Northstar Fitness.""
I leaned back.
That was the missing connection.
Ryan had access to Lakewood.
Laura had access to our personal information.
Peter had access to internal documents.
Gregory had the financial network.
And Victor Harlan had the money.
They weren't acting independently.
They were pieces of the same operation.
"Do we know how long they've been working together?""
"At least eight months.""
I stared at the photograph.
"That's before Ryan met Laura?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt something shift inside me.
"What are you suggesting?""
She placed another document on the table.
It was an internal employee referral form.
Ryan Mitchell's name appeared under the heading:
*REFERRED BY: PETER LAWSON.*
The date was from eight months earlier.
I looked up.
"Peter arranged Ryan's employment at Lakewood?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"We believe Ryan was recruited specifically to obtain information from the facility.""
I sat motionless.
Then I remembered something.
A conversation with Laura six months earlier.
She'd told me she'd met someone at a business networking event who might be able to help with a future investment.
I'd barely paid attention.
I'd been preparing for an acquisition.
Now I wondered whether that conversation had been part of the plan.
"Rebecca, I need you to investigate every contact between Laura and Peter.""
"We're doing that.""
"And find out whether she knew about Ryan before he joined Lakewood.""
Rebecca nodded.
"I'll prioritize it.""
At noon, my phone rang.
Laura.
I answered.
"Hello.""
Her voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Almost frightened.
"Daniel, can we meet?""
"For what?""
"I need to tell you something.""
"Tell me now.""
She hesitated.
"Not over the phone.""
I glanced at Rebecca.
"Is this about Ethan?""
"Partly.""
"Then I'll listen.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Ryan isn't who I thought he was.""
I said nothing.
"He told me he was helping me build a better future. He said he had business opportunities and connections. He promised we'd have enough money to start over.""
I closed my eyes.
"Laura, what did you do?""
"I made mistakes.""
"That's not an answer.""
She began crying.
"I didn't know about all the money.""
I stared at the desk.
"How much did you know?""
"I knew about the consulting company. I knew Ryan was moving money.""
"Did you know he was stealing from my company?""
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
She continued quickly.
"But he told me it was temporary. He said the money would be returned.""
"And the forged ownership documents?""
She stopped crying.
"How do you know about those?""
I looked at Rebecca.
She was watching me carefully.
"Answer the question.""
Laura's voice became faint.
"Ryan said it was just paperwork.""
"Paperwork with my forged signature?""
"I didn't forge anything!""
"Then who did?""
She didn't answer.
I leaned forward.
"Laura, I want the truth.""
Her voice suddenly became desperate.
"Daniel, please. I didn't think it would go this far.""
I closed my eyes.
"How far did you think it would go?""
She whispered:
"Ryan said we'd get the documents, transfer the money, and leave before anyone noticed.""
"Leave where?""
"California.""
I sat very still.
"With Ethan?""
She didn't answer.
"Laura?""
Finally, she said:
"I thought we could all start over.""
I stared at the phone.
"All of us?""
She began crying harder.
"I thought you would understand eventually.""
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
She had planned to steal from me, divorce me, and disappear with our son.
And somehow, in her mind, she had convinced herself that this was a fresh start.
"Where is Ryan now?""
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"He said he was meeting Gregory.""
"Where?""
She hesitated.
"An office near the river.""
"Which office?""
"I don't know the address.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Laura, listen carefully. You need to speak to your attorney. Do not destroy any documents or messages. Do not contact Ryan about this conversation.""
She suddenly became frightened.
"Daniel, what are you going to do?""
I looked at the photographs on my desk.
"I'm going to protect my son.""
I ended the call.
Rebecca leaned forward.
"Was she willing to cooperate?""
"She admitted knowing about the stolen money.""
"Did she identify the location of the meeting?""
"Not specifically.""
Rebecca wrote something down.
"We'll preserve the call details and coordinate with counsel.""
I nodded.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new email had arrived.
The sender was an address I didn't recognize.
The subject line read:
*THE TRUTH ABOUT LAURA CARTER.*
I opened it.
There was one attachment.
A scanned photograph.
It showed Laura standing beside Peter Lawson at a hotel entrance.
The date printed beneath it was from nine months earlier.
Long before Ryan had joined the gym.
Long before Laura had started personal training.
Long before I'd discovered the affair.
I zoomed in.
Laura was holding a folder.
Peter was holding her hand.
And on the back of the photograph was a handwritten note:
She wasn't recruited by Ryan. She was the one who introduced him to the plan.
I stared at the photograph.
Then another email arrived.
This one contained only six words.
*Ask your wife who hired Ryan.*
I slowly lowered my phone.
Because if Laura had known Peter before Ryan ever entered our gym, then the affair might never have been the beginning of this nightmare.

It might have been the cover story.
And the person I'd spent eleven years trusting might have been involved in the betrayal long before I ever saw that kiss.
