Chapter 9: The Last Person She Expected
Maya did not move.
The phone was still pressed against her ear even though the call had already ended.
She could still hear Marcus’s voice.
Not the words.
The fear behind them.
*The person standing closest to you is the reason I disappeared.*
Slowly, she lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
The abandoned facility seemed to hold its breath.
Daniel looked at her face.
“What did he say?””
Maya looked around the room.
At Robert.
At Daniel.
At the empty doorway.
She didn’t answer immediately.
Because she had spent the entire day discovering that every answer created a new betrayal.
“I’m not sure who I can trust.””
The words came out quietly.
Robert’s expression softened.
“Maya.””
She raised her hand.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I need everyone to stop explaining.””
The older man went silent.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“You deserve that.””
Maya looked at him.
“Do I?””
Daniel accepted the question.
“Yes.””
A strange sound came from behind them.
A door closing.
Everyone turned.
The hallway was empty.
Robert immediately moved forward.
“Stay here.””
Maya almost laughed.
“No.””
He looked back.
“Maya.””
“I’m done staying behind.””
There was something different about her now.
The fear was still there.
The pain was still there.
But underneath it was something stronger.
Determination.
They moved through the facility together.
The building looked abandoned, but small signs told a different story.
Fresh footprints.
A recently used computer.
A coffee cup still warm on a desk.
Someone had been here.
Recently.
Daniel walked toward the computer.
“There.””
The screen was still active.
A folder was open.
Files.
Photographs.
Documents.
Maya saw Marcus’s name.
She moved closer.
“What is this?””
Daniel opened the first file.
It was a report.
The title made his face change.
*Project Family Protection Initiative.*
Maya frowned.
“Family?””
She opened it.
The first page contained names.
Her father.
Marcus.
Victoria.
Robert.
And one more.
A name she had never expected.
Maya stared.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed.
“This name.””
Daniel read it.
His expression changed.
Because he recognized it.
“Maya…”
She shook her head.
“No.””
The name on the page belonged to someone she had trusted her entire life.
Someone who had always been there.
Someone who had always told her he loved her.
Her older brother.
Ethan Thompson.
Her hands started shaking.
“That’s impossible.””
Robert stepped closer.
“What is it?””
She couldn’t answer.
Daniel looked at the document.
“Ethan was involved?””
Maya backed away.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“He’s my brother.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they understood.
This wasn’t another business betrayal.
This was family.
The screen showed more details.
Ethan had worked with Westbridge years earlier.
He had access to internal records.
He had been involved in several financial transfers.
But the worst part wasn’t what he did.
It was the date.
The first suspicious transaction happened three weeks before Maya’s father disappeared.
Daniel whispered:
“This goes back to your family.””
Maya stared at the screen.
“No.””
She kept saying it.
Like repetition could make it untrue.
“No.””
Robert looked at her carefully.
“Maya, listen.””
She turned.
“You knew?””
Robert looked away.
That was enough.
Her face fell.
“You knew about Ethan?””
“I suspected.””
She laughed.
A painful laugh.
“Of course you did.””
Robert looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
“You didn’t know how?””
Her voice rose.
“You knew my husband was alive.””
“You knew my father was connected.””
“You knew my brother might be involved.””
She pointed at him.
“And you still let me walk around believing everyone I loved was honest.””
Robert didn’t defend himself.
Because he couldn’t.
The sound of footsteps came from the hallway.
Everyone froze.
A figure appeared.
Maya stopped breathing.
“Marcus.””
For a second, nobody moved.
Then he stepped into the light.
Older.
Tired.
Different.
But alive.
Maya’s entire body reacted before her mind could.
She ran.
She reached him and hit his chest once.
Hard.
Then again.
“You’re alive.””
Her voice broke.
“You’re alive.””
Marcus held her.
“I’m sorry.””
She pushed him away.
“No.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“You don’t get to say that first.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
She stared.
“What?””
He nodded.
“You should be.””
The honesty surprised her.
“I hated you.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“I thought you left me.””
“I know.””
“I thought our baby would grow up without knowing you.””
His face changed.
Because that was the pain he had been avoiding.
“I know.””
Maya touched her stomach.
Marcus looked down.
His eyes filled.
“I missed so much.””
The silence between them was heavy.
Then Maya stepped back.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why did you do this?””
He took a breath.
“Because someone was trying to kill you.””
She shook her head.
“You always say that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why not tell me?””
“Because the person watching me was watching you.””
Maya looked at him.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
She already knew.
“Ethan?””
Marcus’s expression changed.
And that was the answer.
Maya closed her eyes.
“My brother.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
“Did you know?””
“Not at first.””
He walked toward the computer.
“I found financial records connecting him to Victoria.””
Maya looked confused.
“But Victoria saved you.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel stared.
“So everything we believed was wrong.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Not everything.””
Daniel went quiet.
Marcus looked at Robert.
“And Robert did help me disappear.””
Maya looked at Robert.
“But why?””
Marcus answered.
“Because Robert was the only person who believed me.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“I failed him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“You saved me.””
Maya looked between them.
“Then why did you warn me about Robert?””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Because I didn’t.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Marcus looked at her phone.
“The message you received.””
He stepped closer.
“Show me.””
Maya handed it over.
Marcus read it.
His expression darkened.
“This isn’t from me.””
The room became silent.
Daniel frowned.
“But it used his number.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at the message.
“Look carefully.””
Maya did.
Then she noticed.
A tiny detail.
The message timestamp.
The location.
Her face changed.
“It was sent from inside this building.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked around.
“Then who sent it?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone understood.
Someone had been there.
Someone had access.
Someone wanted Maya to turn against the wrong people.
Marcus moved toward the computer.
“There’s more.””
He opened another file.
A video.
The screen showed Ethan.
Maya covered her mouth.
Her brother was sitting in an office.
Talking to someone.
The camera angle changed.
The other person appeared.
Victoria.
Maya stared.
Victoria was crying.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Crying.
Ethan leaned toward her.
“You should have finished this months ago.””
Victoria shook her head.
“I couldn’t.””
“You knew the risks.””
“I saved him.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“And now you’re going to fix your mistake.””
Maya felt cold.
Marcus paused the video.
“That’s why I disappeared.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Because Ethan wanted you gone?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Maya stared at the screen.
Her brother.
The person who hugged her when their father died.
The person who promised to protect her.
The person who had attended every important moment of her life.
“He knew.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
“He knew you were alive.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Marcus was silent.
Then he said:
“Because he wasn’t trying to hide me from you.””
Maya looked at him.
“Then what?””
Marcus stared at the frozen image of Ethan.
“He was trying to hide you from me.””
A terrible silence followed.
Maya whispered:
“Why?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because Ethan knows the truth about what happened to your father.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
A noise came from outside.
A car door slammed.
Everyone turned.
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
His face changed.
“He found us.””
Daniel grabbed the nearest object.
Robert moved toward Maya.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because the answer was already walking through the front door.
A man stepped into the facility.
Maya recognized him immediately.
Her heart stopped.
“Ethan…”
Her brother looked at her.
Not surprised.
Not afraid.
Just tired.
May you like
Then he said the words that shattered everything she thought she knew.
“I was hoping you would never find out why Dad really died.””
